Let's explore Seaton Carew's History - Hartlepool North East England
Hello and welcome back to North East Nostalgic!
Today I’m throwing it back to August last year when I visited Seaton Carew, a seaside resort in the Borough of Hartlepool. Being from Sunderland, I love being at the coast and discovering new beaches that have remnants of the old British seaside holiday.
When I arrived at Seaton Carew I thought it reminded me of a sleepy version of Whitley Bay, with it originally being a fishing village before expanding into a seaside holiday resort in the 18th and 19th century for wealthy quaker families from Darlington.

Come with me on a tour to the top of Penshaw Monument, one of the North East of England's iconic landmarks! I pre-booked my ticket on the National Trust website back in June, having always wanted to see the top of one of the North East’s most iconic landmarks. The cost of a ticket is £5 and allows for a half an hour slot to see the incredible views from this 70 foot high monument. The views are...

Welcome back to North East Nostalgic! I thought last Friday was going to be just an ordinary day, finishing work and just settling down for the evening with a pizza and a cup of tea whilst watching TV. A quick news bulletin on ITV news briefly mentioned it being a monumental evening for seeing the Northern Lights, a sight that has been on my bucket list for years! I popped a hoodie on over my p...

Just seen my nans.cottage in this clip.it's the cottages on the seafront ( bungalows) half belonged to the lighthouse keeper & other half was grandads,(the harbourmasters) in the late 60s through to late 70s,summer holidays were always at nans right on the seafront,I didn't have to travel far with me Bottle of water ,pink slice & seaside sandwiches Mam or nana made up for us,then I was out for the day rock Pooling or crabbing & I always fe!t safe alone....They were best times but now all gone & Sundeland is now sadly unrecognizable,my nearest seaside town is Falmouth but I always hanker back to my heady days back home, you can take the girl out of Sunderland but you'll never take Sunderland out of the girl......

I was born and brought up opposite Garth Heads 1963 to 1973 (then derelict), about a minute's walk from the Keelsman Hospital. It was a fantastic looking building, even though it was empty. My brother and I used to get into the old hospital and play in the empty rooms (kids used to do that sort of thing then).. iirc there was a "secret garden" in the centre, that seemed to be tended (which was odd). Shame that the building has fallen into such disrepair. Haven't been back to Newcastle in 30 years, and not to this area for around 40. It was nice to see footage of an environs I still remember so well. Cheers!

I recommend Poplars Riverside Caravan Park East Lands Ends Haydon Bridge. It's right on the banks of the Tyne. In summer you can watch the fish jumping and see bats flying over the river catching insects at dusk. You are sent off to sleep by the river quietly babbling.

I've viewed a few of your vlogs now as I have always had a love of history since childhood but this one left me feeling depressed. What a sad looking place, empty forlorn and even desolate looking. Trouble is in Britain as other places, more and more of our history is being taken away in the name of progress which in turn means money. PS; Have to say you have a smiley pleasant visage.

I did film here quite early so it'll be why it looks really quiet, I'm more of an early bird so find it easier to capture early! There was lots going on later in the day with children playing but I try to only film the buildings and history I do agree though that was a lack to film in this particular place!☺️

You either chose an extremely & unusually quiet day or very early/late visit - where's the people, lol? Because of its wide sandy & level beaches & grassed areas Seaton is very popular with both the very young & elderly alike as it is so easily accessible. It has the usual arcades, fish & chip shops (takeaway/eat in), souvenir & ice cream shops, as well as the well patronised Gladys 40's style tea room. None of the usual "high steet" shops but Hartlepool is only a few minutes drive away down the coast and, in the opposite direction it has a wonderful nature reserve which attracts many different species of birds throughout the year. (You forgot to mention the infamous "Seaton Canoe" story, which made its own TV film). Wonderful memories of childhood day trips where your parents could take empty flasks and have them filled with boiling water from a kiosk at the side of the building near the shelter/clock tower. Big square green canvas beach shelters, wind breaks, and deck chairs for hire. I really enjoyed your historical account of the resort. Thank you.

Lovely film. Very poignant. For a time in, in 1962, I lived with my grandparents on nearby Pennywell estate before I believe it later became something of a crime hotspot. My friend and I would take a short ride up to the monument via Northern's Consett bus. Then we'd climb up to the monument and lark about playing hide and seek etc. Free of charge then. No tearooms, No country park. The monument just sat alone amid open farmland. No car plant then but you could clearly see the tall chimneys of heavy industry in the distance. Now long gone I suspect. Once we were chased out of a nearby field by an angry ram. Far off innocent days. Thank you for re-kindling old memories.

The Victoria Viaduct ISNT Sunderland’s… while Washington is unfortunately apart of the City of Sunderland, the Viaduct is very PROUDLY WASHINGTONS and NOT Sunderland’s, as while Washington was originally independent, then Co.Durham, now Sunderland… the Viaduct has ALWAYS been in Washy. #2. BOTH SIDES of the Fatfield Bridge are actually INSIDE the Washington boarders.
