- Hello and welcome back to North East Nostalgic!
The Sunderland Literature and Philosophical society is back after a 150 years hiatus and I was kindly invited to the launch by Founder Auburn Langley earlier in the week.
The Lit and Phil as its nicknamed was once a powerhouse of discussion where great minds would gather together to discuss the topics of the day, even Lightbulb inventor Joseph Swan attended a lecture one evening about filaments, unlocking us ability to create the first incandescent lightbulb!

Nice video Kathryn , I love your hunger for the history of the town , ( yes , I know it's a city ,but in my time it was the biggest town in the UK) it will always be "the town" to me !
Keep up the great videos ,
Someone actually said that in the event that Sunderland was the biggest town in the UK, so that's very cool! I was born around the time Sunderland became a city so it's nice to be able to discover all these things that made it so great ☺️
@northeastnostalgic5071 I left Sunderland in 1983, I live in Portsmouth, I wish I could explain to you the Sunderland i knew so well , and loved so much , I came back briefly , but it had changed out of all recognition which is progress I guess, but sad as well ,
Your doing a great job with your channel, I watch every video you post ! I've said to you before , it's so great a young person still feels the importance of her heritage
Best wishes Kathryn
Beautiful architecture x A very interesting explanation of how the Lit and Phil began. X😊
Thank you!☺️
What's became of the old Three Crowns Hotel on the corner of High Street West & Tinn Street? That's the old pub building with the fancy tiles on the back lane (Tinn Street) part of the corner. I haven't been to Sunderland since the summer, and back then they were restoring it back into a pub. It was a slowly but surely type of project, but surely it must be finished by now
Cracking video! I was a member of Newcastle Lit and Phil when I was doing my doctorate at Northumbria a few years ago. A great place to have a look in if you're passing. My daughter's currently doing creative writing a Sunderland. I'll tell her about this. Thanks.
I love the Newcastle Lit & Phil! It's so beautiful inside with the glass ceiling, you've reminded me I'll have to go back! Yes you'll have to tell your daughter, they often have talks with speakers so it might be good for future contacts with whatever she wants to do ☺️
