Your exactly right. Im an engineer and pretty much drive for a living. So also use CarPlay all day long. Like you i have found the same issue, the phone just gets too hot. So i have to use a cable. The other thing to consider is the No.1 Enemy of Electronics is Heat. Heat kills components. So the actual life span of the phone will be reduced, and definitely the life of the Lithium battery pack. One thing you dont want to happen is for a phone battery to vent, and then catch fire. This has happened to me, but luckily at home and i manged to launch it into the garden before it burned me and the house. Even worse if that happens in a car while you are driving. Manufacturers not thinking for sure. Lets put a high powered computing device into a sealed box and give it a work out.
I’ve just realised where I know you from now! I was a manager with DX comms years ago and you were part of my training course from Ericsson. That’s a blast from the past!
One of the reasons I changed the head unit in my mini was for one with a usb socket in the back. Now I have a hidden wire running to the glove box and my iPod or phone can sit in there (and with the R53 there is a vent in the glovebox to allow cold air in). Thanks for another entertaining film Pete, and I hope you got all your essentials :)
Peter Watts Been scratching my head trying to remember which one of my previous MINI’s had the cool vent in the glove box, I used to put small bottled drinks in.
I have that problem just charging my iPhone SE (not the new SE). My hubster fitted a new battery but it can't be original as it actually did burn my hand when charging from a cable in the house. Admittedly I have delicate hands as I don't have hot drinks (which obv holding a mug would toughen one up) so I'm maybe pathetic but the phone actually marked my skin. I half expected it to go up in flames but I ripped the cable out and threw the phone across the room, it didn't even do its thermo shut down so I am extremely wary of it now.
I have same problem I bought a new focus active x estate and one option I went for was wireless charging pad and watching your videos has just answered the problem of the phone heating up keep up the good work brilliant content !
Hi pp👍 wow this was way over me, apple what? wireless charging! And blue tooth history! Enjoyed every second but understood nothing! 🤣😂 brilliant keep up the good work friend 👍
Thank heavens for the video. My lights came today without a single instruction and luckily they are exactly like yours (except I selected red to match the stripes and other spots of red on my black Roadster) and I was able to watch this pause, do the step, watch the next one and so on. ECS should give you a royalty as without the video I would have returned them. I am NOT a fan of guessing and oh yes I also read my map before I take off driving.
Talking about “headers” takes me back to my Cable&Wireless days and frame relay! Love the detail PP. Re wireless charging, I really can’t see the point apart from making the interior a little neater. It’s a bit like cars having keyless entry for me.........may be I’m just old 😊
Paul Kirman - I agree, I love my Subaru's tech that helps make up for my age related driving defficiencies so I go for it, but keeping it simple is a must, and I actually see the wireless charging as additional clutter, especially in an armrest that is needed to hide clutter. Pete, perhaps this is an opportunity to work with your contacts on conversion of, or near to, an air a/c vent cooled charging platform. I have always missed the simple slide out cup holder on one of my earlier Subarus (pre-Nav screen) that was in front of the center dash vents, out of sight when not used, kept drinks warm in winter and cool in summer when needed. For now, a simple perforated armrest might suffice, and give you another chance to show your mechanical conversion skills. Great video, and good info for others.
Is it really the headers or the ack and naks that’s eating up the bandwidth? 😀 Can you set the connectivity to BT only? Just curious. BTW, my XR gets a bit warm when I use a wireless charger at home, and the charger has a fan!
Technically it is packetisation overhead. You get the same issue in an packet based network. By the time each protocol layer has added what it needs to and you actually put the information on the air interface you loose a good proportion of effective throughput 👍
You’re absolutely right Pete, this system generates a lot of heat and not to mention is also extremely slow as opposed to wired charging. For this reason I did not specify it in my own car. Great video again.
Same in a Range Rover Sport! WIFI charging pad under the AC unit which then gets so hot that it tricks the AC into blowing out cold air out too! Only fix I found was for long trips get 2 high capacity USB power banks (I bought some with Solar just so i could leave one out for a little top up whilst away from the car) use the wireless charging to start off with then after an hour or so use a cable charger on the USB power bank and then store in glove box. Strangely though it does seem to be the NAV software like Mpas or Google maps that use a lot of processing power and create the the heat, Spotify or Amazon music doesnt seem to cause the problem, It might generate more heat as im using Google maps with the satellite images on that requires extra processing and maybe more heat than normal too. Good vid
Had wireless charging and apple carplay in a company car couple years ago, Vauxhall Insignia sports tourer. Apart from the TINY space for the inductive pad, Carplay worked perfectly wirelessly. But never worked if the OnStar hotspot was running. Never used the wire-free charger, so It's nice to know I'm not the only techie/ car nut around!
I just picked up my 2017 Countryman with the same features. My iPhone 11 and iPhone 8 both get hot (not warm) after just 10 minutes or so on the wireless charger. It’s unfortunate, because I agree it’s a great feature and an ideal location for the phone. I don’t like the idea of extended heating sessions while the battery charges at essentially a trickle rate, especially on a road trip. I’m convinced I’ll stick to wired charging.
Just used wireless charging on my new Skoda Karoq. First time on a long journey and same problem. Thanks for pointing out it is a universal issue and hy, along with the history info!
I knew there was a reason why I subscribed, lol. Very interesting, thanks for sharing that Pete. The lesson here is to just plug in, I reckon I can do that in 2 seconds! Stay safe buddy.
So for short trips around the city - shopping, pickup up food, getting gas, driving to work - I just keep the phone in my pocket. For trips longer than an hour, I'm going to just plug the phone in to charge. One thing I might try is mounting a computer fan inside the charging compartment. I can plug it in via USB and have it blow directly onto the phone. Might work! We'll see.
Wireless chargers ruin the phone's battery, the problem begins when the phone is on the pad/mat using its features to connect to the cars head unit, this begins the route of discharging the phones battery, to compensate the pad is trying to put the charge back into the battery, the discharge rate is different to the charge rate, thus the heat generated. (The battery doesnt know whether its coming or going) If you are going to use the carplay feature, then connect via cable, and only use the pad for just charging, although i dont see the point of the pad if you have a cable.
Hi Pete, great vid me darling. Yah I had the same problem in my countryman. I did ease the problem but, its far easier to tell you in a phone call as it a bit long winded. Like yourself I’m a trainer in tech and I use to teach in Hallam University in Sheffield. I’m a Systems Analyst by trade. So yes i did sort it out and Mini do have my solutions. Stay safe & healthy 💋
Most cars have air con and heating wired through to vents in the back of the car. So it wouldn’t take much to divert cool air into the armrest 🤷🏼. Keep up the good work ped 👍
I experience the same with a 2023 Jeep while running multiple applications via blue tooth connected Apple Car Play and wireless charging. I found it helps avoid it just by running a single app.
Just picked up a new Mini with this wireless system charger. Got home from a three hour trip and experienced this thermal shutdown issue. I do appreciate your detailed dive into the tech that causes this. I am going to research a fix to help mitigate this problem.
Thank you again Peter! I have wired Apple CP in my Land Rover and wireless Bluetooth in my Mercedes.I had noticed the heat build up on my Apple XS but my 11 seems far less affected. I don’t have charging pads but in both, they have cooled centre console boxes...remember both are optioned with everything so few LR D/Sports will have that. As always, a very interesting film again and always something to look forward to on these long slow days...and I was delighted to see a film taken on a short but permitted journey. Will we ever get freedom again???😱😀😀😀 Stay safe, Richard.😎😎😎
Petrol Ped Agreed...it is driving me mad...and like you getting to Cornwall, the last time we saw our poor flat at Portishead Marina was March 23rd and that was in the dark taking a chance! 😳😳😱😱
I went to school many years ago for this... Technician. Could you please, please, please do more techie posts. Please! You were very good at making that understandable.
Yes…! I’ve just bought an Audi Q2 and have noticed my phone actually doesn’t gain any charge neither does it lose any. And my phone gets hot. Very annoying to have been sold the feature without the full knowledge of the downfalls. Thank you for your video.
I totally agree with you i have a GT Line Kia Sportage and the same thing happens to me on the wireless charge pad. Can't believe how hot the phone gets if i go on a long journey i tend to use a power bank i find them far better. Thank you for your uploads and please stay safe.
Great Content Ped! most people’s regular use of their car is for journeys under and hour so I guess perfect for the wireless. On a longer journey it would be worth the 1 minute faff with the cable! Wish I had wireless charging in my alfa!
I know this is a year old but I just had to say thank your for your great explanation. I just bought a 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe, High Country diesel. Fuel wise it gets almost 30 mpg and I love almost everything this vehicle has to offer. The wireless CarPlay is amazing! I love how the car locks itself up when I leave the vehicle too. I noticed right from the beginning that the wireless charging pad was slow to charge and today my phone got super hot! I have an iPhone pro max 13 and battery health dropped to 99%. I have only had this phone for 4 months. I was wondering if this charging pad is affecting my phone battery! Now I know. I will use the cable to charge the phone until I get more info, I guess. I am not too happy right now. I was loving the fact that I didn’t need a cable. Anyway, thank you for your insight and informative video.
Great educational content. I have a wireless charging for my iPhone xMax in my 2020 Audi S4 which is open to the air under the arm rest. Works fine and never has overheated although I have noticed the phone hotter at the end of the journey. Latest Audi A4/S4 only support CarPlay and Android auto via USB which is slightly annoying but there is a USB C slot behind where the phone sits.
Very informative, thanks Pete! I wireless charge my phone at home/hotels with no issues. I guess there’s a lot of air around though so it doesn’t get hot? Like you say, shutting it in the armrest prevents airflow! Perhaps, like on other cars, they should have the charge pad in the open, in front of the gear lever maybe?
First of all, thank you for this insight. I literally just had that problem whilst using apple car play in a VW ID3. Annoying, hope they can find a solution for this in future cars.
Air conditioned unit really is the best idea. In the golf, the glovebox turns into a fridge for storing sandwiches and food on the good. They could do something similar with the air rest, especially given most cars have air con vents on the back of them now!
I have a 22 Lincoln Nautilus and it is an open charging area and it still heats up as well. I too am not happy with what seemed like a great idea and a great feature that is really not working well. Thank you for the explaination.
Good video. My only challenge with the Qi charging pad is that my iPhone 12 Pro + is too big to fit in the mount. I'm working on modifications for this. But I was thinking, all you really need is some sort of air movement through the arm rest. If a small PC fan were fitted on one end and an air duct on another, you'd have the ventilation needed to keep it from overheating. I have a buddy with a 3D printer. I think I might just have to speak to him this week.
I’m a big fan of both wireless charging and wireless Apple car play. Find it useful for short journeys and so much more convenient. I don’t leave my phone in the car now as much because it’s mainly in my pocket. I only do short runs so not experienced the phone over heating.
I’m glad I didn’t option wireless charging or wireless CarPlay for my new car based on the information in this video. I’m sure one of my previous cars (way before wireless charging existed) had a cooled glovebox. It might have been my 55 reg Peugeot 307. I don’t even have my phone in a case so it can “breathe”. iPhones are particularly prone to heat up if the software & apps are out of date. Interestingly (or not) this is why you should always extend an extension reel. Because of the current, heat can build causing a potential for fire.
My 2011 r60 has the same wireless charger in the arm rest, no apple CarPlay, but running my iPhone 11 Pro to my head unit and Apple watch by Bluetooth, and WiFi to the Mini retrofit heads up display, it’s warm, but never hot, its a slow charge though. The iPhone media adaptor that I had before I fitted the wireless charger, has a fan in the center to cool the back of the phone, I think BMW always knew it was a issue.
I used to love having wireless charging on my old phone because it was convenient having the charger on my desk or bedside table - I could pick up the phone, use it for a few minutes, and then put it back down and charge it again. I just don't really see the point in a car. If I'm driving I don't need to be touching the phone, so that 'grab convenience' has no purpose. My current phone doesn't have wireless charging, but I just plug it into my car at the start of the journey and it launches Android Auto and charges quickly and cooly as I go along. Only thing I've noticed is it can get a touch warm in direct sunlight if I opt to have the roof down rather than the AC on! Bit of a first world problem that though... Enjoyed the video - cheers!
I'm a 58 year old bugger, I like cars, I like noise, I've tracked, I've rallied, blah, blah bollocks, I've done most things in a car and still do, sometimes above the law as we all do. As far as I am concerned cars and phones don't mix, you either like phones or cars, honestly truly phones in cars are for girls with big fake handbags.....I can never imagine a Spitfire pilot saying in the 40's.......Hello Tarquin I'm having problems with my phone, pretty much the same as.......hello Desmond does my hair look good today as I'm going over Calais........I like you as a bloke, infact I know that if I ever met you we could have a really good laugh together somewhere but as far as phones are concerned I can never imagine John Surtees would give a monkeys.....maybe I've had to much wine.
I've never had an overheating problem using an android with a much faster charge rate than iPhones. Auxiliaries and or air-conditioning is easier to adapt if you don't already have a feed.
I've a BMW X3 M40i and use the wireless charging mat all the time, to date no issues with my iPhone overheating and shutting down. Maybe because the mat is behind a sliding cover in the central console so tend to keep the cover open when using it.
Great video and love your style. I have wireless charging in an XC40 and haven't experienced it going to thermal cut off. However the charging pad is in the centre console but air can circulate around it. Also Apple car play is via USB cable so when I've used Car play it isn't charging wirelessly so not quite the same drain. When not using car play, the phone is connected via bluetooth and provides a wifi hotspot for the car so not sure how this affects things. As you say, not sure there is an easy solution. Keep the videos coming. Cheers
Old thread revival, so apologies, but the issue is still relevant. While I was installing a mod on my 2019 Countryman PHEV so that bigger phones can fit in the charger, I noticed to the driver's side of the unit (and usually out of sight) is a small PC-type fan and corrsesponding vent holes. Since I've been unable to use the charger, I've never heard the fan spin up. I don't know if this fan was peculiar to this model or not, but I haven't heard anyome mention it before.
Thanks for the physics lesson. I have a Cupra Ateca with wireless charge pad and it nearly melts the phone regardless of whether I play music or not. I have traded it in for a JCW, which will arrive end of September, so the problem is going to persist. Marvellous! :-)
And, annoyingly, the iPhone 11 Pro, that I'm considering next, has a glass back due to its wireless charging ability! I want it for its triple cameras. Yes, I also have a DSLR, somewhere around. 😉
Cheers Ped, as a fellow former Telco professional I enjoyed your brilliant explanation tremendously. Just to up the nerd factor a bit I suspect that the very high performance processors used in Apple’s mobile devices and the sleek design of their products possibly not providing optimal cooling of the hardware might contribute to creating the problem in the first place. That would also explain why it happens in other cars as well Anyways, placing the phone in the wireless charger and closing the armrest lid over it is probably detrimental to antenne performance, until heat throttling shuts the thing down! ;-).
Your iPhone goes into a thermal shut down. A Samsung 'phone would go into a thermal meltdown 🔥🔥🧯🚒 :-))... However, I do have a Samsung 'phone and the wireless dock for it at home and I have zero heat problems. It never even seems to get remotely warm. But I didn't know that once bluetooth was set up and wireless sorted out, that the bluetooth connection gets dropped. You learn something everyday, eh!? Very interesting Mr. Ped. Very interesting 008. :-))...
Hi Pete! Thank you for all the nice videos you provide! What a small world this is! I am an electrical engineer, and used to work on AXE SW as a designer/team leader etc. for the OMS subsystem until 2004! I still work on telecommunications as a Project Manager. So we have a similar background... This video is the exact reason i did not order my MINI F56 JCW without this feature, when I saw that the wireless charging spot was inside the handrest. To my mind, what could be done, is add a fan and holes on both sides for airflow, this design would enable the phones to reduce temperature. However, this would blow hot air on one side and make some noise. Another better solution would be to select another position like the lower dash, but this is not the case here... I am waiting to collect my mini, it has arrived since the end of March, but was not delivered due to coronavirus...
Wireless charging in cars is a big scam. The charging is so slow that it hardly able to Charge 10% in 1 hour. Plus overheating of phone. Wonder why engineers in car manufacturing companies are not able to see through this while designing the whole solution. Liked the idea of having cool air flow into the charger..
Excellent! Very clear explanation, though I am a bit of a computer/electronics nerd myself. Am looking at replacing my 2014 car, and will think twice about ordering a wireless phone charger in my new one.
Same thing happens to the BMW display key, it gets very hot even with the lid closed...I’m not a fan of Apple carplay, I tend to use the car’s own system, at least on a Bmw the integration with Carplay feels like an afterthought. I asked my dealer about that Bluetooth/Wifi thing but you explained it a lot better, I think they had no idea how it actually works ;-)
Hi, thanks for all your great videos, after watching your charging issues surly you could vent air from the rear seat vents into the arm rest which would help dissipate the heat. The air to those vents I would presume run below the arm rest enclosure.. all the best John C.
i agree with you 100% and own a VW product with same experience as your vehicle. It would be great if the storage area for the was was ducted to use the aircon but then the wireless charging feature offered by the manufacturers would probably cost triple.
Not got wireless CarPlay but have got wireless charging. Only use the wireless charging when I’m popping around town and don’t need CarPlay. Any proper drive that I’ll want CarPlay for and I’ll plug in via USB. Connection is better, charging is faster and phone stays nice and cool!
I have never commented on a video before but I had to say, THANK YOU! I just got a mini and I love it but the over-heating phone was causing concern. Relieved to know it's not my car!
Thank You for this info. I bought a wireless CarPlay adapter because I don’t want to plug in and charge my phone every time I use CarPlay. Now CarPlay starts automatically. Today I’ve put my phone on the wireless charger and within half an hour it was too hot and stop charging for protection. So for a long ride I still need a cable 😂
Thank you for this. I now believe the charger in my BMW is not cheap/faulty, it's because I'm charging, using a nav app and streaming music with my phone in an enclosed space full of thermal blankets (napkins).
Yeah in my fastback N I have a wireless charger, but no wireless CarPlay, when I first bought the car I had a big leather case to protect the screen but trying to charge the phone in the car was a nightmare and got really hot so just bought a rubber back case and it works a lot better now, and in the Hyundai i30 fastback n it's just in front of the gear shifter so gets more air than the mini I think.
so basically mini has cocked up putting the wireless charger where it is least effective. in my new RSQ3 it sits under the dash exposed to the air...no issue. very good explanation though and enjoyable to listen too.
This makes sense, I will use wireless CarPlay and wireless charger, then usually my navigation works on my way to something, then constantly crashes when I’m leaving or after an hour. I started plugging my phone into usb, and it was fine, but I was thinking it might be software. I knew the phone was hot, but I assumed runaway process because of software. I need to find an app that exposes the temperature so I can better understand the limits of using wireless charging and wireless carplay
Same problem in a '22 Ford Edge. It's not as enclosed as in the Mini, but apparently not enough airflow nevertheless. During the summer, not directly exposed to sunlight and using only Waze / Apple Maps / Google Maps, it takes 60 to 90 mins to get the phone overheated and it shut downs for about 10 mins. Trust me, that will happen just a few minutes before you get to the complicated multiple junction where you need the most guidance. I guess this is only for short trips. For longer trips it's better to use the cable and a vent phone holder so it gets direct cool air from your car ventilation, but the downside is that you're likely to get direct sunlight on the phone.
usb fan and find a way to put holes in the side of arm rest were not seen or just dont put the arm rest down on journeys over 1 hr long or find a charge pad and fit it in a cooler place in the car
I’ll just built a ventilation for it...retrofit air condition great idea 💡 if You have air conditioning on the rear seats that should be easy 😎 I’ll have to change iPhone max to regular size do... don’t think the large one would fit
Very interesting, Pete! More of this really informative stuff please 😊 I had no idea how wireless charging worked until you posted this. I suppose I could have looked it up but I didn't 😂
Hi Pete. Forgive an old fogey but my antique Merc doesn't have Apple Carplay (so old it's insured against fire, theft and viking raids). I'm looking to replace it when I'm released from lock-up, (oops, lockdown) and until now I've not found a decent explanation of this whole area. I feel a bit happier now and think I know what I'm looking for. Many thanks.
It hasn't happened to me, as of yet, but, I haven't demanded much from it. I did mention this to my gf when we were buying the car, I thought it could get hot, and it was a bit of a design floor, even though it is convenient in where it's situated. I have a wales trip, hopefully later on this year, so I'll find out then.
Fantastic information Thanks - BMW actually swapped my whole wireless charging system out, They thought it might be faulty, of course it’s what you’ve just spoken about - Maybe they are unaware- of course I still have the same problem - sometimes 40 minutes is enough to have my phone shut down- cord is handy but Messy, I did wonder if the mat. Went magnetic charging would do any thing- hope they can fix - it’s very convenient and keeps the phone out of your hand as well
Thanks for the review. The third thing is like "closing the lid on the coffin" to your phone and say goodbye for good! I wonder if the amount of Wi-Fi radiation could be measured and if it is safe to leave the phone in the pants pocket without frying the "big boy" when CarPlay is in use! After making sure the car is structurally safe in accident for the driver, I hope they put the same thoughts into the implementation of wireless CarPlay for the driver's health. Maybe they did and they need to put the phone in the "coffin" to be Wi-Fi safe for the driver?
Hi there Ped! Really awesome explanation. I’m doing Uber on weekends and my car doesn’t have wireless apple carplay, want it to upgrade with those type of usb devices that you just plug in, but now I’m really no sure. Phone gets pretty hot using Uber Driver app plus Waze, in time to time checking my nba fantasy app too. Is it better to still use my old lightning cable or upgrade?
Still even if you could get cool air as in the mini I used for a few years the technology is not there yet, heat will destroy your battery faster the hotter it gets, some chargers do have an internal fan that cools down some, but the heat generated is pretty high, specially during an extended call while using WIFI, BT, Pandora and such.
I had the same issue on my mini f56. Pano roof + apple carplay + wireless charging = bad engineering. As soon as the sun shines through the roof it overheats the iPhone. It even deconnects completely. If you use waze or Google maps you’re without navi and no warning. The dealer could not solve the issue. It took me 3 trips to the dealer and in the end it resulted in me figuring it out myself. There is only one solution stick to the cable. 😉
Got to Love a good 4 diode bridge rectifier , very interesting certainly about connecting to WiFi and not using the Bluetooth . You should explain telecoms as a job as you made it sound very straight forward 😂😂
exact same problem on the Skoda Superb and the Octavia, its in a little cubby with no airflow and the charger and the phone get really hot until it cuts out. Ironically, the armrest and the glovebox are both cooled on these cars, but they put the charger somewhere else!
Wireless charging trays you can buy from Amazon for twenty bucks have some kind of ventilation capability. Some of them are even fitted with a fan. Those you get from an automaker often as a $500+ option don’t have any. Sometimes they use thermal insulating materials like rubber as the surface.
I don’t have the wireless charging pad in my Clubman but I have found the wireless Apple Carplay to be unreliable in that sometimes it will just not like to connect with my phone. I have decided for the mean time to just go back to plugging my phone in and using the Mini connected system. There does seem to be issues with the Apple CarPlay as you can find posts about it on the Apple forums.
Have similar problem on my Mini but doesnt get hot enough on my older Samsung S9 on Android, my old CLK (2006) had an aircon cooled central console which was never a problem :(
I'm more annoyed by Bluetooth continually starting with the first song in my iPhone. In my case it happens to be "A" Bomb in Wardour Street by The Jam. A great song but I get annoyed of it starting up everytime I start the car up. I do have a wireless charge pad in my X5 but not wireless Apple CarPlay. Phone gets very hot but has not shutdown on me yet.
Your exactly right. Im an engineer and pretty much drive for a living. So also use CarPlay all day long. Like you i have found the same issue, the phone just gets too hot. So i have to use a cable. No way 👏
It's a small world! Half the team I work with came from Ericsson!
Peter Watts
Been scratching my head trying to remember which one of my previous MINI’s had the cool vent in the glove box, I used to put small bottled drinks in.
My Mercedes has exactly the same problem with wireless charging. After about an hour or so, I could cook toast on my phone! Great video.
Or an egg 🍳
I have that problem just charging my iPhone SE (not the new SE). My hubster fitted a new battery but it can't be original as it actually did burn my hand when charging from a cable in the house. Thanks Keith 👍
I've never been a fan of wireless charging in phones far rather give it 30 mins on a cable than an hour on a charge mat
Completely agree.
Hi pp👍 wow this was way over me, apple what? wireless charging! And blue tooth history! Enjoyed every second but understood nothing!
🤣😂 brilliant
keep up the good work friend 👍
LOL...I bet you understood it really 😜👍

Pete, perhaps this is an opportunity to work with your contacts on conversion of, or near to, an air a/c vent cooled charging platform. I have always missed the simple slide out cup holder on one of my earlier Subarus (pre-Nav screen) that was in front of the center dash vents, out of sight when not used, kept drinks warm in winter and cool in summer when needed. For now, a simple perforated armrest might suffice, and give you another chance to show your mechanical conversion skills.
Great video, and good info for others.
Is it really the headers or the ack and naks that’s eating up the bandwidth? 😀
Can you set the connectivity to BT only? Just curious.

Great video again.
Cheers 👍
Never used the wire-free charger, so
It's nice to know I'm not the only techie/ car nut around!
Interesting it is also a problem in Skoda 🤔
Well they say you learn something every day, and our Nordic king was the lesson for today 👍🏻
The Skoda Superb can funnel air-con air into its glovebox and centre console.
Cheers Stephen 👍
Just plug in via usb. But I guess it hurts if you paid to fit the wireless charger. 😬
Starting to get lockdown fever now 😢
Petrol Ped Agreed...it is driving me mad...and like you getting to Cornwall, the last time we saw our poor flat at Portishead Marina was March 23rd and that was in the dark taking a chance! 😳😳😱😱
I went to school many years ago for this... Technician.
Could you please, please, please do more techie posts. Please!
You were very good at making that understandable.
Thanks Neil. It’s my day job 😜
Yes…! I’ve just bought an Audi Q2 and have noticed my phone actually doesn’t gain any charge neither does it lose any. And my phone gets hot. Very annoying to have been sold the feature without the full knowledge of the downfalls. Thank you for your video.
Thanks for sharing
I totally agree with you i have a GT Line Kia Sportage and the same thing happens to me on the wireless charge pad. Can't believe how hot the phone gets if i go on a long journey i tend to use a power bank i find them far better. Thank you for your uploads and please stay safe.
And you Darren 👍
Great Content Ped! most people’s regular use of their car is for journeys under and hour so I guess perfect for the wireless. On a longer journey it would be worth the 1 minute faff with the cable! Wish I had wireless charging in my alfa!
It happens in my new RS3. I think it’s also made worse by the fact I’ve got a case on my iPhone. Interesting and well done video. Thanks!
What in the would is wrong with a cable when things get too hot without a cable...😱
Hi Pete great vid . Great fact s ref Bluetooth, ref the heat issue is that why Audi’s and Vw group have exposed changing pads.
It’s a shame that mini put the wireless charger in such a confined, low/no airflow space to exacerbate the problem.
I think I’d stick to the cable
My pleasure 👍
Good explanation of what is going on. I have the identical issue with my M2 Comp.
Cheers 👍
Air conditioned unit really is the best idea. In the golf, the glovebox turns into a fridge for storing sandwiches and food on the good. They could do something similar with the air rest, especially given most cars have air con vents on the back of them now!
I agree 👍
I have a 22 Lincoln Nautilus and it is an open charging area and it still heats up as well. I too am not happy with what seemed like a great idea and a great feature that is really not working well. Thank you for the explaination.
My pleasure 👍
Interesting about how that works. Love the steering wheel trim , done a couple myself. Really good the way they snapped in place.
I think they look great 👍
Cheers Danny 👍
Thanks Nick 👍
Thank you for the explanation I do have a same problem. Maybe Mini need putting the charger at different open space like some other cars.
Even open space chargers get hot 🥵
LOL 😂
Set-up your qi charge pad in your Audi glovebox. Phone gets a lovely air con breeze... Job done!
Cheers
Cheers Paul 👍
Marvellous! :-)
The wife has a Seat Ateca, the wireless charging pad is in the dash with plenty of airflow. Therefore, no overheating problems.
Thanks for another great show P.P. From Australia 🇦🇺🏁
Cheers Lawrence 👍
Definitely convinced me that wireless charging is a bit of a pointless extravagance.
That would also explain why it happens in other cars as well Anyways, placing the phone in the wireless charger and closing the armrest lid over it is probably detrimental to antenne performance, until heat throttling shuts the thing down! ;-).
Cheers Jens 👍
Your iPhone goes into a thermal shut down. A Samsung 'phone would go into a thermal meltdown 🔥🔥🧯🚒 :-))...
However, I do have a Samsung 'phone and the wireless dock for it at home and I have zero heat problems. It never even seems to get remotely warm.
But I didn't know that once bluetooth was set up and wireless sorted out, that the bluetooth connection gets dropped. You learn something everyday, eh!?
Very interesting Mr. Ped. Very interesting 008. :-))...
Cheers Bud 👍
Hope you get you new car soon mate 👍
Hi Ped. They should fit the wireless charger into to glove box. Not only is that connected to the air con but the phone is out of reach to the driver.
Not seen that used but good idea 👍
Wireless charging in cars is a big scam. The charging is so slow that it hardly able to
Charge 10% in 1 hour.
Cheers Philip 👍
Thanks! Great video! Same overheating issues in Audi S3 2020 with iPhone 12 Pro. Really sucks.
A mesh/grilled /vented side to the armrest/ charge station would be a start 👌
Same thing happens to the BMW display key, it gets very hot even with the lid closed...I’m not a fan of Apple carplay, I tend to use the car’s own system, at least on a Bmw the integration with Carplay feels like an afterthought. I asked my dealer about that Bluetooth/Wifi thing but you explained it a lot better, I think they had no idea how it actually works ;-)
LOL 😂
Hi, thanks for all your great videos, after watching your charging issues surly you could vent air from the rear seat vents into the arm rest which would help dissipate the heat. The air to those vents I would presume run below the arm rest enclosure.. all the best John C.
Cheers John. That sounds feasible for the manufacturer 👍
Thanks for your explanation. I’m seeing the problem in my Tesla.
Glad to help 👍
i agree with you 100% and own a VW product with same experience as your vehicle. It would be great if the storage area for the was was ducted to use the aircon but then the wireless charging feature offered by the manufacturers would probably cost triple.
Probably 🤔
Not got wireless CarPlay but have got wireless charging. Only use the wireless charging when I’m popping around town and don’t need CarPlay. Any proper drive that I’ll want CarPlay for and I’ll plug in via USB. Connection is better, charging is faster and phone stays nice and cool!
👍
I have never commented on a video before but I had to say, THANK YOU! I just got a mini and I love it but the over-heating phone was causing concern. Relieved to know it's not my car!
Happy to help Jane 👍
Thank You for this info. I bought a wireless CarPlay adapter because I don’t want to plug in and charge my phone every time I use CarPlay. Now CarPlay starts automatically. Today I’ve put my phone on the wireless charger and within half an hour it was too hot and stop charging for protection. So for a long ride I still need a cable 😂
Thank you for this. I now believe the charger in my BMW is not cheap/faulty, it's because I'm charging, using a nav app and streaming music with my phone in an enclosed space full of thermal blankets (napkins).
😂😂😂
Yeah in my fastback N I have a wireless charger, but no wireless CarPlay, when I first bought the car I had a big leather case to protect the screen but trying to charge the phone in the car was a nightmare and got really hot so just bought a rubber back case and it works a lot better now, and in the Hyundai i30 fastback n it's just in front of the gear shifter so gets more air than the mini I think.
Some wireless chargers won’t work with a case.
so basically mini has cocked up putting the wireless charger where it is least effective. in my new RSQ3 it sits under the dash exposed to the air...no issue. very good explanation though and enjoyable to listen too.
Pettier cooler under lid. Can’t use air con as you may be pumping heat in the winter, then have to work out how to cool another inefficient device!
For longer trips it's better to use the cable and a vent phone holder so it gets direct cool air from your car ventilation, but the downside is that you're likely to get direct sunlight on the phone.
yet another great video! Wow! I never really thought about the issues with wireless charging - your video makes a whole load of sense!
Great 👍
Same here, just got my 2022 mini cooper S and it got some vents on the side but still overheating in long journeys. I got an Iphone 12 mini
usb fan and find a way to put holes in the side of arm rest were not seen
or just dont put the arm rest down on journeys over 1 hr long
or find a charge pad and fit it in a cooler place in the car
I’ll just built a ventilation for it...retrofit air condition great idea 💡 if You have air conditioning on the rear seats that should be easy 😎 I’ll have to change iPhone max to regular size do... don’t think the large one would fit
Very interesting, Pete! More of this really informative stuff please 😊 I had no idea how wireless charging worked until you posted this. I suppose I could have looked it up but I didn't 😂
It’ll just change my channel name to Google 😂
@@PetrolPed Ah, that's my wife's channel. She knows everything! 😜
Update on history. Harald Blåtand was from Denmark and not from Norway. And his remains is buried in Jelling in Denmark
Thanks for the update 👍
I found that bit quite interesting as I'd never given a thought as to where 'Bluetooth' came from.
Glad I could help 👍
I like your explanation, but why does it not heat like that when I use a wireless charger at home..?
MotorSport & Dream Cars
I saw what you did there 👍👍👍😂
geofo60 Geof Harris was waiting for someone to say “that’s what Pete does as a job”
I should look into that 😜😂
exact same problem on the Skoda Superb and the Octavia, its in a little cubby with no airflow and the charger and the phone get really hot until it cuts out.
Yep. It does that form time to time for me too 😢
Great content and I was fascinated by the story about the origins of Bluetooth!
Cheers Martin 👍
Love this vid PP; appealed to my inner techie and I learnt a load of new stuff ! Thanks 😀
Cheers Mark 👍
Bluetooth is nice as a luxury for sure! I’ve never over heated a phone before.
Have similar problem on my Mini but doesnt get hot enough on my older Samsung S9 on Android, my old CLK (2006) had an aircon cooled central console which was never a problem :(
Love the ending music. Oh yeah, and the whole vid, of course, as usual.
Cheers 👏
Might as well just do the wired car play.
Had a almost heat issue when I rented a corvette. The lack of ventilation is the biggest thing.
