Wow! I can't believe how much better Charlie looks with the beltline de-chromed! Brilliant solution! ... and very brave to do it yourself, and of course to record the process! Love it!
Personally preference is the matt version, also found it was much easier to do from right to left, starting on the straight and ending on the bends, best tip though was to do it in warm weather, the chrome and the tape being heated by the sunshine gave me a factory finish. Automotive panel wipe or even 70% alcohol wet wipes are available on Amazon. You’ll most probably be sent the black door handle stick on covers for free in exchange for a plug but don’t be tempted, go for the dealer ones, pricey at £180 for my F55 (four) self fitting is easy at around 30 minutes for all four. The satisfaction of having the real factory units over the stick on ‘condoms’ is priceless.
Vinegar? Stanley knife ? Fingers in contact with the adhesive backing ? Oh dear Peter 😢, at least you got the job done ✅ . Couple of suggestions for the future; Panel wipe, Scalpel with curved blade & cut tape with a bit of excess in order to trim it to finished length and enable you to separate the tape from the backing without contaminating. Oh & try not to touch the substrate (chrome in your case) once you’ve cleaned it, the oils in your skin will deposit themselves onto the chrome and could lead to the vinyl lifting off. I learned the lesson on one of my cars after a spell of warm, wet weather. Looks good though mate - & the next time will be a cinch 👍👍.
The worst jobs to do on a car always seem to be the things you think will be piss easy. Change an exhaust? No problem, pads and discs? Shrug. Change little sidelight bulbs on a Clio 182? OH MY GOD HOW CAN IT POSSIBLY BE THIS DIFFICULT?!!!
Nice work Pete, I remember how long it took me when i did my mini, the door levers covers come pre cut with the button holes, just double check that you order right hand drive & keyless entry! Great vid, thank you !!!!
Well done Pete! I’m just as bad with DIY. At MINI United 50, I bought a chrome bonnet scoop for my R56S. It was a demo model, Sparkling Silver, with an Aero kit, and chrome mirrors. I thought the scoop would really set it off. That was fine, until I realised I’d be doing it myself! Thankfully, it stated on.
Nice vid, excellent patience with the belt line Pete. The door handle covers come pre cut with the holes for the easy entry and will only take 15 minutes to fit all six, just remember to specify the easy entry option. I’ve had mine on for over a year and they are really secure and still look amazing. Ive also changed my badges to the new style black type that you are considering. You may want to consider also wrapping the (CHMSL) Central High Mounted Stop Light so that the whole spoiler looks black. Loving that car👍
What a nice Guy... just watched this video and thought a genuine nice guy at the end of the video you mentioned your two pooches that sold it for me. Looking forward to the rest of your videos keep up the good work mate and stay safe
I gave this a shot a few weeks ago. For me, it has to look absolutely factory stock or I can't handle it. Got about half way through and didn't like how it was turning out so I took it off. Was disappointed in the quality the black "vinyl" strip I was working with... too much like glossy paper. I'd try again if I'm ever able to get a hold of some better quality material. Nice job on yours, Pete. Black belt line looks good. Will match well with the black door handles. You can find factory looking gloss black handles for all 6 doors from Outmotoring (I have zero affiliation. It's what I put on my barn doors) 👍
I had assumed that Luxewerx doesn't ship to the states but I was wrong. Followed the link from your description and placed an order. Only £6.00 to ship to US! I like that they use a high quality 3M vinyl and not cheap tape. Thanks!
Good job Pete ! , i usually prefer the chrome , but the black tape against the white looks better than i expected , i'm sure certain colours work more than others. I have never been a fan of any fully blacked out car including the windows , it just looks so dull , to me a contrast makes all the difference !.
You are a cheery wee soul Pete, o k a cheery tall soul, and it was fun for us to watch, job done, what next? the dogs collars? Keep safe, and we will see you on the next one.
I can’t believe you’ve actually done that to your car. It’s a superb car. Yes, it looks ok from a distance, but close up not good! I agree it needs to be de chromed , but surely wait and get it done professionally. As always enjoyable video! Mrs Petrol Ped won’t be happy with the finish. Remember, it’s her car! 😂
Looks good Peter! I did take a sharp breath when that Stanley knife came out... Eek! Like a fellow Pedlar said earlier, please use an x-acto scalpel or similar for that sort of work! Much smaller blade tip, but very sharp and more easily controlled. Stay safe mate.
Love Your Vids Pete. Lose the Clubman definitely. A little stealth is always good. Dental floss used to cut through the tape on the letters is probably the safest way to remove the All 4 badges. Easy to test when you remove the Clubman lettering, get a feel for it. The remaining adhesive should just rub off with you thumb. Safest thing around the decals. Stay healthy, Motor Safe!
The blackline all4 badge, is topside mounted to a plastic sheet, so it’s lined up as one unit and temporary stuck, then the backing is pulled out to stick the badge to the car, then the plastic is removed. Actually be easier with the stripes.
Thanks Mr Petrol Ped, I am so pleased you did this. My 5 day old Black Cooper S is crying out for a belt line de-chrome. Before ordering my car I hadn’t particularly looked at others to realise how much I despise the chrome belt line but between ordering and delivery, I looked at tons of photos online and realised how much I hated it. I hope to get it done before lockdown is over, so long as I can buy the tape online. Cheers 🍻
In the states you can get the Clubman letters on the back in black. Actually all the badges on mine are black. (if it ever gets here that is). I thought about the 450. upgrade for black handles but...whoa that is a bit much squeeze for the juice. Enjoy your videos very much. Thank you.
Not bad effort Pete. For the rear quarter it would be easier to start from the door and work back. Use the hair dryer to heat the tape and keep the tape tight as you go round the corner. Leave it long and trim off with a scalpel. Ps Automotive panel wipe is an ideal degreaser that won't damage paintwork, but understandable that you don't have any in the current situation. Keep up the good vids and keep safe.
Good job on the belt dechrome 👍🏽 word of advice, if you're using a power washer make sure its on wide spray before pointing it at the beltline. I made a rookie mistake yesterday after filling a bucket. Tore a small bit of beltline 🥴 going to do some repair on it, lesson learned! On the door handles, i got mine off Mini Bitz and they have the option online for you to select comfort pack which has the cutouts for the keyless entry and puddles 🙂 great vid! Cheers!
I agree never been a fan of dechroming, gives the mini a retro look, plus the tape looks like it will peel of so won't be attempting this one on mine, 😁
That was an excellent 18 minute + of entertainment. Like your enthusiasm in all your videos. Was on edge when you have the scissors in your hand, had visions of you scratching the paintwork! 😱😱
What do the puddle lights from the door handles look like? My 2016 clubman has the mini emblem projected only on the driver side from the door mirror. I think the gap you show on the door handle is to insert a screwdriver or the key to push off the lock barrel cover.
Looks great! I did this a few years ago with 3M black tape I bought online. I used an exacto knife for the ends as I went through each section. It turned out well, but over the years in the Florida heat, it has shrunk on some of the edges. I plan to purchase a pre-made kit from one of the Mini aftermarket sellers which is more fitted.
This brings back memories of putting “go faster” stripes on my 1990 fiesta ghia. First side I did individual panels and ended up with a wavy line. Second side I did in one, then cut edges and wrapped them round.
Very good result, well done!!, it looked very tricky, I don’t think I could have done this, I’m such a perfectionist, I would have probably used up the entire kit on one piece of trim trying to get it 100% 😂.
Ah yes the belt line kit, I remember it well... 4 hours spent outside in January installing this. As you said Pete, not bad for a relatively inexpensive kit and finishes off the de-chrome nicely. 3 months later mine is still going strong. Stay safe!
Loved this... If I ever do any DIY stuff, that’s a bottle of red earned.... I must admit I thought getting rid of the chrome was a bad idea but..... Seeing the finished it looks excellent.... Stay safe and all the best mate....
Looks way better de-chromed, bud. Ties in with other black accents (like head light surrounds). Defo agree to get rid of Clubman badge, but I also think that getting rid of the Cooper Works would mean you make it more of a ‘sleeper”. I like the decluttered look, but I also understand why you say it’s a badge you want to keep. Lovely car!
Good job, did a similar job on my Ford Edge grille when we lived in Canada, always worth the effort. Think about adding the short red stripes to the back doors when the clubman comes off, that go round the handles
Bad at DIY, you and me both. When you said Stanley knife I was really nervous . So the belt line at the front, did you have to do that as one complete piece? Have to say that when you explained what you were going to do I wondered why, but It really does make a big difference. Just wondered if doing it again you could make use of a blanket or large towel that you could place over the bonnet so you could lean across without marking the paintwork.
Good job not bad for a self confessed non-diyer. Next time use hair dryer as you apply inch by inch. Tape in one hand hair dryer in other. That way the tape becomes really flexible and almost wraps itself on, particularly on the tighter corners.
Well done that man,, an entertaining vid that gave me a few chuckles,,,, keep em coming. I'm going to wait and see how Charlie turns out and then maybe do a few bits on mine. Mine's British Racing Green and I think it would look so much better 'blacked'.
Definitely thought you were going to slip with the Stanley knife 🤣 (glad you didn’t). Looks so much better, and after my message about the handles when you mentioned the de-chroming originally, thankfully the company my friend works for can wrap them - so I will be going to a man!!
Wow that made a bigger difference than I thought it would! I think you did a great job Pete! As long as your happy with it that’s all that matters. I wonder how it would look in chili red? 🌶. Thanks for keeping us entertained!!
I've seen this done before. My biggest concern is after some exposure time, the tape has a tendency to shrink, then the chrome sneaks out on the ends. Keep us up as time goes by. Maybe you'll have been blessed with a better product then what I've used.
CamberwellCarrot Or a surgical scalpel, cheap & plentiful. I have several & an X-Acto with a rotating blade. Fiddly to use at first but once you get the hang of it they’re great for cutting around curves.
A really good effort. (If it was me that roll would have ended up in the bin after 5 mins) The black doesn't look too bad against the white after all. As for the all4 logo if your dechroming everything else do that logo too,as i.m.o it would look out of place staying silver. I did cringe when u said basically it's electrical tape 🤣
Well done Pete, great vid and effort. My OCD mean I would probably get the Pros in for this one, but then I am a detailing addict 😬. Does look WAY better de-chromed tbf.
Hi Peter, it’s not a bad job please never ever dance on this channel ever again as I had to look away. As for the car you did well for your first time well Peter take care and stay safe and a good video it would have been great but the dancing lost you a few points 🤣🤣💙💙
Well done on that diy and your are doing yourself a disservice by down playing what you have done. Looks great. Btw, what is the flashing red light on the roof fin for? As I have seen a few and I can’t work out what it is for.
Make sure you SUBSCRIBE BY CLICKING HERE...ruclips.net/user/petrolped
Done. Keep up the great work.
It 6 o'clock here in minn. What time is it there
Thanks Rick. Welcome to the channel 👍
You are 5 hours behind us 👍
Nice! I foresee upcoming Petrol Ped videos:
- I wrapped my Mini
- I wrapped my dogs
- I wrapped my wife
:-)
Damn...am I that transparent 😂
Wow! I can't believe how much better Charlie looks with the beltline de-chromed! Brilliant solution! ... and very brave to do it yourself, and of course to record the process! Love it!
Cheers Dermot 👍

You can get black handles/badges from your MINI parts dept
I'll get them to fit them too 😂

Next time I'll get you over mate. You can show me the tips of the trade and then we can go for a beer 😜
I was waiting for tears when you started using that stanley knife close to the paintwork....it was tense! ;)
I read this comment before I saw the knife and I still shouted at the screen 😂
LOL...never a good thing 😂
LOL 😂

LOL. I had to take a Freelander to the main dealer to change a read bulb. You needed a special tool to take the lens off 😂
Not sure if it’s mentioned in these comments but you can buy the door handles, clubman lettering and mini badges direct from mini in black.
Thanks 👍
Nice work Pete, I remember how long it took me when i did my mini, the door levers covers come pre cut with the button holes, just double check that you order right hand drive & keyless entry! Great vid, thank you !!!!
Thanks for the heads up 👍
Wrap the tape around/over the ends, helps prevent lifting over time.
I've had a kit to do my R55 since about June 2020. Finally did the door handles in February 2021. Beltline still waiting !

Cheers Carl. Nice of you to say 👍
Looks awesome. Once the door handles are blacked out, the look is complete. Check out Plasti-dip for the All 4 badges, may work.
Will do 👍
In the F55 you can remove the bonnet belt line and 2 short sections either side. Maybe same on the Clubman? Makes it MUCH easier!
Thanks for the heads up 👍

I am with you on that for sure 👍
Model kit scalpel and blades thinner and sharper than a Stanley knife good job for first time
I would have used one but couldn't buy one due to lockdown and timing 😜
You are a cheery wee soul Pete, o k a cheery tall soul, and it was fun for us to watch, job done, what next? the dogs collars? Keep safe, and we will see you on the next one.

RUclipsrs have to make content and most importantly entertain you guys. Just a bit of fun that can be removed if needed. Mrs PP didn't even notice 😂😂😂
Now you did it. Today a little trim work. In a month, we'll be watching you mount and balance your new tires on your new wheels in your backyard shop.
Doubt it 😂
Great plans, handles and everything 😎
Just seen first bit, why didnt you open up de back doors to cut?
Didn't need to 😜
Looks good Peter!
I did take a sharp breath when that Stanley knife came out... Eek! Like a fellow Pedlar said earlier, please use an x-acto scalpel or similar for that sort of work! Much smaller blade tip, but very sharp and more easily controlled.

Hi Petrol Ped - your videos are very good entertainment during these times of lockdown .....please keep them coming.
I will do my best 👍
That was an excellent 18 minute + of entertainment. Like your enthusiasm in all your videos. Was on edge when you have the scissors in your hand, had visions of you scratching the paintwork! 😱😱
Great to hear you enjoyed it 👌
Great job...fun watching you go to work....stay safe!!!

Dechroming looks awesome. Totally agree with the all black mini symbols and all4. Definitely take the “Clubman” off the back it makes my OCD itch. 🤣
Will do 👍
well done ped not a bad job just shows you what you can do when you put your mind to it
Cheers Ken 👍

But did the car go faster ? 😂
Petrol Ped
No, they caused drag! 🤣
Down to earth honest vid ! Looks so much better black , clubman badge definitely needs to go, as you said 👍
Cheers 👍
Very good result, well done!!, it looked very tricky, I don’t think I could have done this, I’m such a perfectionist, I would have probably used up the entire kit on one piece of trim trying to get it 100% 😂.

Thanks Bob...bottle of red wine was drunk 😂
Fantastic Peter. Good on you for attempting it and well done 👍🏻 Can’t wait to see the wee mods getting done 😉👌🏻
Cheers Bud 👍
Good job. Does the supplier know how the tape holds up under sustained cold weather? (say -20c)
Not sure. Find Luxewerx on Instagram and drop them a message 👍
Thank u for the laughs! It looked like u had fun. And definitely de chromeing set the car off! Love the look.
Great to hear it made you smile 👍
Looks way better de-chromed, bud. Ties in with other black accents (like head light surrounds). Defo agree to get rid of Clubman badge, but I also think that getting rid of the Cooper Works would mean you make it more of a ‘sleeper”. I like the decluttered look, but I also understand why you say it’s a badge you want to keep. Lovely car!
Thanks Alex. I love the fact it is a JCW too much to get rid of that badge 😜
Good job, did a similar job on my Ford Edge grille when we lived in Canada, always worth the effort. Think about adding the short red stripes to the back doors when the clubman comes off, that go round the handles
Ooo...not thought of that 👍
Looks brilliant. A lot better than chrome .
I’ll never understand why Mini doesn’t do this from factory if the black trims are specified!
Me either 😕😂
Brilliant! Why didn’t Mini do that in the first place! The bright chrome does not go with the black rimmed lights! Great job!
I don't get it either 😪
Looks much better with the chrome. It's a beautiful car...just leave it alone.
I'm the guy that suggested that you use Electrical tape ! To clean chrome trim you can use use rubbing Alcohol..
The kit comes with alcohol wipes...but I lost them 😂😂😂
Bad at DIY, you and me both.
Yep the front was one big strip 👍
You can buy rubbing alcohol in any pharmacy.
Looks really good from where i am sitting Pete, Its going to look quite stunning once you have done all the other bits you are planning. great vid.
I think so too 👍
Alright Pete, a blind man would be pleased to see it 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣, not bad for your first attempt mate. Love the dad dancing lol. Stay safe mate 👍👍👍👍👍🏁
Cheers Ralph 👍
Good job not bad for a self confessed non-diyer.
Next time use hair dryer as you apply inch by inch. Tape in one hand hair dryer in other. That way the tape becomes really flexible and almost wraps itself on, particularly on the tighter corners.
Cheers Scott 👍
Finished now, looks much better!
I am chuffed 👍
Looking good, well done you....don't worry, a blind man in an aeroplane won't see any mistakes.
LOL 😂
Thank you for making possible new content despite of this hard situation! :) Regards from Spain
My pleasure. I trust you are OK. Things look pretty rubbish for you guys at the moment 😪
@@PetrolPed Now its the opposite
Cheers PP, will have a go on my GP3!
Yep. Never got that. The whole car on the GP has been blacked out except the beltline 😕
££££ Penny pinching :(
Love the enthusiasm Ped. Very entertaining as usual. Stay safe
Thank Jim. Stay safe yourself mate 👍
Looks a lot better sans chrome - should you have opened the doors to continue the wrap in the shuts or does the chrome end where you taped it?
The chrome ends where I taped it 👍
Well done that man,, an entertaining vid that gave me a few chuckles,,,, keep em coming. I'm going to wait and see how Charlie turns out and then maybe do a few bits on mine. Mine's British Racing Green and I think it would look so much better 'blacked'.
Cheers Roland. Doing this to yours would look mega 👍
Just checking in Petrol Ped. A bit over a year later how has this kit held up for you? I'm pretty sure I want to do this on my JCW Countryman soon.
Good as the day it was done 👌
@@PetrolPed Awesome, thank you!
Definitely thought you were going to slip with the Stanley knife 🤣 (glad you didn’t). Looks so much better, and after my message about the handles when you mentioned the de-chroming originally, thankfully the company my friend works for can wrap them - so I will be going to a man!!
Good plan 👍
Shame mini don’t offer the belt line in black from the factory. Good vid Pete.
I know 😪
What about using alcohol wipes for glasses?
Yep, but didn’t have any 😢
Well, Pete, your effort looks very good on screen. I was impressed with the skilled use of the hairdryer -looks like you use it every day!!!😆
I need to keep my buffon under control 😂😂
Great job Pete, may do this to my Copper S hatch.
Go for it. Good fun too 👍
Wow that made a bigger difference than I thought it would! I think you did a great job Pete! As long as your happy with it that’s all that matters. I wonder how it would look in chili red? 🌶. Thanks for keeping us entertained!!
Thanks. Chilli Red...no there is a thought 😜
Nice work Mr Ped !! You look like a DIY kinda guy, but don’t tell Mrs. Ped ...honey do list will get way too long...👍🏻🇨🇦
LOL 😂
Why doesn't Mini offer the belt line in black from the factory?
Not sure :-(
What a transformation, keep up the vlogs they are great to watch.
Will do. Thanks 👍
I've seen this done before. My biggest concern is after some exposure time, the tape has a tendency to shrink, then the chrome sneaks out on the ends. Keep us up as time goes by. Maybe you'll have been blessed with a better product then what I've used.
Cheers John 👍
Good job. I'd suggest an X-Acto hobby knife next time. They're sharper and easier to control.
CamberwellCarrot
Or a surgical scalpel, cheap & plentiful. I have several & an X-Acto with a rotating blade. Fiddly to use at first but once you get the hang of it they’re great for cutting around curves.
Stanley was all I had. Tried to but a scalpel but all the shops were shut 😪
You made a much better job of it than I would have done (similar DIY capabilities!) Looks much better de-chromed than I would have thought 👍
Cheers Matt 👍
Your first attempt was absolutely Brilliant ... DIY car detail...why not, a trend has started... Stay Safe and Carry on...
Cheers Malcolm 👍
Loving the happy dance Pp 😁 could this be the start of Pp wrapper extraordinaire 👍 well done as I would say that was quite tricky.
I think I'll stick to my day job 😂
Exciting times I need to do my f56 belt line ! Cant wait for future post keep up the good work 👍
Cheers Luke 👍
They did the front grill and the lights, why didn’t they do the rest
Exactly 😕
Nice job, you did better than me when I did that same thing to my clubvan!👍👍👍 looking forward to the schnauzers walk! I have 2 white ones!
Awesome. I love the white ones. Gotta love a schnauzer 👏
Just watching this now... Good stuff, enjoying it during lockdown!
Cheers Mark 👍
Hope Mrs Ped didn't wring the alcohol wipes out into her shloer grape juice to make "wine". Tempted to blacken the belt on mine now.
No there is a thought 😜😂
You made me laugh.. Your vlogs are very much welcomed.we lost one of our consultants today to covid-19....can't stress enough, everyone stay safe.
Oh wow 😳
Practice makes better. The first of many DIY mods to come👍.
Maybe 😜
You made a good job of that but I still prefer all the chrome trim on my car. Nothing like it when properly polished !!
True 👍
Nice job. Stanley knife near the paintwork had me worried ! 😀
Me too 😂
A really good effort.
I know. Did it a mega dis-service, it is vinyl 😬
Mate , Well done Pat yourself on the back , It's perfect Pete .
Cheers Lee 👍
Great attempt had a chuckle as well great vid...music was no bad either...
Thanks James 👍
Well done Pete, great vid and effort. My OCD mean I would probably get the Pros in for this one, but then I am a detailing addict 😬. Does look WAY better de-chromed tbf.
I totally get that 👍
Well done Pete. Looks great from here....in Yorkshire !! Not going to ask whose the Hairdryer is !! LOL
It looks good from a distance.
Yep 😬
Hi Peter, it’s not a bad job please never ever dance on this channel ever again as I had to look away. As for the car you did well for your first time well Peter take care and stay safe and a good video it would have been great but the dancing lost you a few points 🤣🤣💙💙
That could be a new thing 😂
I had my doubts before, but it turned out great 👍
Cheers Chris 👍
Well done on that diy and your are doing yourself a disservice by down playing what you have done. Looks great. Btw, what is the flashing red light on the roof fin for? As I have seen a few and I can’t work out what it is for.
Darren Hughes
It’s the alarm 🚨 warning light, saves going back to the car to double check if you remembered to lock it. The fin is the aerial.
Geof beat me to it 😜
Petrol Ped thanks for the answer. It’s what I thought but could not be sure.
