    Another interesting and informative video. As a petrolhead - well actually now also quite an EV evangelist - I watch quite a few videos and read several of the motoring magazines. Over time you come to understand who you know who review cars more authoritatively and authentically so I appreciate your comments. The Countryman is now quite big and I guess it’s size is what splits opinion but the motoring journalists opinions I respect have all been pretty positive. What I know has surprised many is how much better the Countryman is to drive from a ride and handling perspective that the BMW X1 and (particularly) the X2. It is a bit on the expensive side but I don’t think as outrageously so as the Cooper and Aceman neither of which justifies the quality premium that applied to Minis of the past. I know the graphics on the Mini “dinner plate” are very crisp but I think Mini have gone overboard in replacing too many switches, dials and knobs. I’m a still a huge fan of the BMW iDrive controller which IMHO is far easier and more intuitive to use, to say nothing of being less distracting, than a touch screen. I do not need nor would wish to drive a car as big as the Countryman but I think there are better alternatives such as the Kia EV3 and Skoda Enroq albeit they are a bit smaller. It is good to note that the (surprisingly) the Countryman still has the traditional Go Kart steering and handling feel but I’m not convinced that in this class that this attribute is what most buyers are drawn to.

    Been driving our JCW for about 4 months now from new and loving it each time I use it. Likewise my wife drives it more than me. She traded her 21 plate JCW hatch in when we got this. I previously had a 64 plate countryman sport and the extra space is so much better now, especially for passengers in the back. Few niggles around the screen but if you sign up to spike they are gradually releasing more features as voice control so you can avoid screen fumbling. Great car to drive, lots of power. My next upgrade if I'm lucky enough is bigger still, for a defender 110 in a few years. Driven one of those on the off-road courses for a day and that was just a beast. Only problem with that is the serious money. So for now my 4 wheel drive is a JCW ;)

    Enjoyed the video and comments as well. I've just taken delivery of a white Countryman All4 SE Exclusive which weirdly has very similar power and acceleration figures to the ICE JCW but is obviously electric.
    I have to agree about the size, it's not a mini mini but to be honest the increase in size isn't noticeable when driving it but makes using it so much more practical and offers flexibility the older cars just couldn't do.
    I'll be interested to see what you decide, especially as BMW Mini have just reduced their finance plans to 2.9% APR with upto £5k as a contribution when doing PCP or finance. Clearly they want to sell Countryman cars!

    I’ve had one of these on loan from BMW for a week now. To be honest I can’t wait to give it back. It’s costing too much in fuel. It suffers from torque steer when accelerating hard which means it’s not much fun, just a handful. It’s twitchy on white lines when overtaking too. That’s really alarming. I think it’s 4 wheel drive but you wouldn’t know it. It feels like 100% front wheel drive.
    I find the centrally mounted screen over complicated and a dangerous distraction as you have to take your eyes so far off the road to use it. Apple CarPlay comes up as a little square box inside the circular screen and looks rubbish. It’s touchscreen only with nowhere to rest your hand so just annoying to use.
    I haven’t been on a long trip yet but for 10 to 15 mile trips across country it’s pretty thirsty, doing around 25mpg. To me it doesn’t feel like a 300 hp car, it’s so flat at the bottom end compared to my previous car (330d) and doesn’t feel anywhere near as fast as that car while using at least 50% more fuel.
    A really irritating thing is that for some reason it keeps saying ‘Happy Holidays’ on the screen when I first start it up. If I’d actually bought this car that would really p**s me off! The last thing I want is a car that’s gone woke.
    On the plus side, it all feels very solid and well made. It’s also spacious in the rear seats with a decent boot. All very different to the 850cc mini I learned to drive in. It must be twice the length. Still called a Mini though…..

    Fun video Pete. I think what gets a lot of people is the use of the name Mini on a car that's bigger than a lot of the other cars in the same class. BMW own most of the old British car names from their days of owning British Leyland. They could have used one of them and kept the Mini as a small hatch as it started with BMW. Still, water under the bridge.( Gets off soap box). I'm sure it is a good car as it shares the underpinnings with the BMW 1 series. Oh, and a Happy New Year! :D

    My mum has the Countryman S in JCW trim, and it's perfect. The car returns a decent 50mpg driven at 60mph to 65mph on the motorway, so don't overlook that engine in pursuit of the higher output JCW engine that doesn't come with the MHEV tech. Personally, I feel the Countryman is perfectly balanced in the S engine, and the JCW trim gives you the JCW look. I've also driven the C engine, and it's revvy and a lot of fun, but you can feel the lack of punch, and it loses its refinement when pushed.

      To me the somewhat drawback of MHEV All4 S version is that battery takes most of the bottom space of the boot that otherwise available on JCW (and its a lot of space - I can fit foldable kayak in there). It probably is ok for quite a few people anyway but going for lakes with a family and lots of stuff in a boot (including foldable kayak) makes a JCW no brainer as a choice. I wish they had an option for All4 S to have non MHEV as well but alas that is not there.

      @da_great_mogul 13 дней назад +1

      @alexeydanilchenko434 I've not noticed this. I'd prefer the efficiency over the extra space. Did you mean the lake district? We are in Windermere. Come to Ferry View in Bowness on Windermere next time, and you'll see the white Countryman S in the driveway!

    • @alexeydanilchenko434
      @alexeydanilchenko434 13 дней назад

      @@da_great_mogul Yes I mean lake district (all the way from down south). Or even further, Scotland. To me the boot space increase is substantial and especially now that Mini/BMW removed the option to add towbar that is important for the long journeys. Kayak in the boot, bicycles on roof rack and children at the back - I don't need to be driving in Go-cart for a long distances so 450 miles per tank is not too bad, plus it is not EV, refuelling takes 10 mins tops. The MHEVs simply have the bottom part unusable. I do wish they did some other solution and spread that battery around at the bottom or something to avoid taking up that space.

    • @da_great_mogul
      @da_great_mogul 13 дней назад

      @alexeydanilchenko434 I've really not noticed the boot is small on the "S". The "C" engine is gutless and gives the same mpg! I'd like the "JCW" but wouldn't wish to have less fuel efficiency for the extra bhp. I'm from Surrey but this is Mum's car in Windermere so do pop in next time you're here.

    Petrol Ped, can you do me a massive, massive favour and let me know what the mm remaining is on your tyres? My Mum had done 5,500mi and they're already down to 4.7mm to 5mm from the 8mm they tyre came with. We've had the tracking alteted, so I'm worried the issue was that as opposed to this being normal wear.

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  22 дня назад

      When you say tracking altered what does that mean. Have you had a four wheel alignment (if not do this rather than just tracking). Is the wear uniform across all tyres.
      She could just be driving like Sterling Moss 😜😂😂

    • @da_great_mogul
      @da_great_mogul 22 дня назад

      @PetrolPed yes, we had the 4 wheel alignment done in Blackburn. They said it needs a new hub also so Sunderland picked up the car 2 days ago to take it back there and sort. The wear is pretty consistent apart from on one tyre. Do you think 3mm - 3.3mm of wear sounds a lot over only 5.5k miles?

    Hi, we are currently driving a cooper hatch which is really a nice car with good quality interior and typical mini driving properties. Due to serious back problems of my wife we need to look for a higher car. So we drove the nw CM the 3 cyl version in jcw kit finish. My thoughts:
    Driving whise: it's okay, honestly it drives more.like the bmw x1 less than the previous mini so mire comfy. I would go fir the S verdion with 2.0 4 pot.
    Build quality: Humm that was some kind of a disappointment too many hard plastics and the car we test drove was producing lots of wind noises near the windscreen. WHAT IS YOUR experience with this?
    Ergonomics: Well the screens is not the best , buttons or tiles are two tiny in the BMW it's much better managed. Rectangular screen is much better but that wouldn't match in a mini. I guess you get famlliar after a while.
    Compared too Audi Q3/Q2 or X1 of BMW i would give it a lower rate due to inferior finish, but the looks are great, that's what mini is about. Will i buy not so sure surely the windnoise above 40 miles is bothering me.

    I think MINI gets unfair criticism, it’s a big car with modern tech but isn’t that a positive for most drivers? Looks will always be a personal choice and I happen to like the angular look of the new Countryman. Price used to be an issue but I specced up a Peugeot 3008 and the price difference to a level 3 Countryman with all the toys was not too distant. Will most probably look at an Exclusive trim L3 in the near future. Not sure why you can’t get a Cooper S without AWD though as you lose any performance advantage with the additional weight of the transmission?

    As regards the car... It seems to tick all the boxes on the list of what a car is supposed to do for you. Can't make a better argument for a product than that. As we used to say in my long-since-flown youth, "If it feels good, do it." Aloha!

    Beauty is in the eye of the beholder .... and this beholder thinks the new countryman is the ugliest car ever to wear a MINI badge. Maybe a bit harsh, but from the side, it looks like a hearse. I don't care that it is now a maxi, or the interior was designed by a playstation engineer. That is personal taste.
    Part of the MINI charm is the cheeky good looks. This car must rely solely on performance, and let's face it, that is what really matters. I cancelled my order when I first laid eyes on it, and haven't regretted the decision. Sorry MINI - oh and I currently drive a MINI and have owned a plethora over the decades.

  • @PhiveWalls
    @PhiveWalls 29 дней назад +1

    To me the size is not the issue, Mini is a brand now, not the size, the design cue departure from a Mini to a Kia is the problem. Mini/BMW has Porsche design as an precedent of how they managed to progress with the design of Macan, Cayenne & Panamera.
