Awesome! Butch Miles is so overlooked - one of the great big band drummers! Love this particular solo and arrangement. Thanks so much Garey!

I'll never forget, back when I first took drum lessons at the local music store, in the practice room there was a big poster of Butch.....really intense shot, teeth clinched eyes tightly closed, coat soaked in sweat.
Decades later I still remember that. He had those Buddy super human singles!!.

The trad grip originated with marching bands where the drum was slung on the shoulder at an angle…so they could get the left hand over the drum.. I like how it gives you a whip like power..I love your Videos ..❤

Wow Garey. What a great reaction and analysis of Butch Miles performance. Blown away and can see and hear the Buddy Rich and maybe even a little Louis Bellson influence. You have to a drummer that can read, play at tempo and play with a large vocabulary and have the endurance to play this style. I love the Big Band era and I am sad that it has taken a little bit of a backseat in today's young musicians. I have watched videos of drummers like Tommy Igoe and Neil Peart playing with the Buddy Rich big band and performing this stye. Fantastic. Even learning how Miles Davis created fusion music by blending Jazz with blues and funk with the unreal Tony Williams blazing the trail for new and up and coming musicians to dive into. Thanks Garey

There was supposed to have been some sort of feud between Buddy and Butch at some point, do you know anything about that. Around late 1979 Buddy added that big 22in pang or knocker crash cymbal and there is one vid only that I have seen that shows Butch also using one of those. Which one of them used it first, love your vids.

We had the privilege of spending some time with Butch after a Basie concert in Eastern Washington back in the 1980s.
We were discussing the styles of various drummers and who he thought were the best drummers alive. The topic of Buddy Rich came up. Butch thought Buddy's ego was bigger than his talent. He said, "There's only one Buddy Rich in this world, and that's Butch Miles." He ment the only drummer that was as good as Buddy Rich thought himself to be, was, in fact Butch Miles.

That was great. Watching 0800 AM in Oslo Norway. That swing and feel was soo clean. And the horn section.. Jesus! Bass player top notch. I loved it. I thought i heard some Krupa in there too? Anyway, really enjoy your channel. Fantastic breakdowns and your passion and knowlege is superb. Thank you.

What would be great, for people who are no Jazz aficionados and your younger audience, if you could do an intro about who Count Basie was and a short bio of the drummer, in this case Butch Miles. I am not a drummer, but love your channel. Some of the drummers you talk about I have never heard about. Of course I can google them, no problem, but to keep up with the rhythm of your videos such a short introduction would be nice.

Dynamic drumming & band, I believe he had drum shells made from fibre glass. They cut through better than wood in that situation.

If i can make one suggestion about your very cool channel, is that since you're featuring drum solos from famous drummers, I suggest you invest time in better audio quality so we can here the drums/music the way we would if we were watching the actual video ourselves. With that said, thanks for posting and for all the time and effort spent doing so..
    Cheers 👍

I would like to suggest one solo to react to, its's minotaur from mario duplantier.
This drummer is very interesting, he comes from years of jazz lessons and he is now one of the best metal drummer. He puts so much feelings in his drums, with so much stamina and and excellent technics. I would love to hear what you have to say about his style
