I actually go to Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas and i'm a jazz drumset player in the jazz band there. I get to see Butch play a lot during the semester, mainly because I take drumset lessons from him and he also directed my jazz orchestra this past semester. One of the nicest guys you'll ever meet, and one of the best jazz drummers of all time. Imagine getting to see stuff like in this video, but all the time. I'm truly blessed. Haha.
I am just happy that there is a Buddy and Butch to listen to. Why not enjoy them both?
I can recognize peripheral talent when I see it. Butch has the raw energy of Buddy and the musical sense of Morello. If you can't recognize that, you are only hurting your own developmental abilities.
I can and will watch this a other 100 times! RIP Butch Nick ✝️
Yeahhhhh Butch was just here in Elkhart,In at our Concord High School Jazz Caffe And Butch if yer reading this THANKS MAN ! It was unforgettable ! See you this weekend at The Elkhart Jazz Fest WE LOVE YOU MAN ! KEEP JAMMIN !
ED MAN
Although there are many, Butch was a rare talen.t.
Man, daddy-o, Butch's solo here is one of the all time best drum solos I've ever seen.
All you kiddies who think Peart is so great, but you guys don't even know that guys like Butch and Donny Osborne are even alive.
You can go to any major city in the country and find 25 -at least - bona fide Jazz drummers who are light years ahead of Peart, and Mr. Miles is one of, if not THEE best, drummer alive on the planet right now .
Great touch, dynamics, power, ideas - he has it ALL ~
Butch Miles was the bridge between Sonny Payne and Buddy Rich.
A consummate big band drummer!
What a great band - Butch is outstanding.
Buddy just got the word to scoot over a little.. he's got some company. Thank you for the incredibly awesome inspiration you were one of the very best! Can you imagine the drum battles going on up there right now ..? Every time it thunders, I will look up and be reminded RIP
Sammy Nestico! gran autor y mejor arreglo!!!
Best of Butch.... We'll Miss this .. Peace...
killer big band drummer and a nice guy to boot.
When I first saw Butch with the Basie band it was on TV and it wasn't just his drumming that caught my eye. I was struck by how dammed happy he always looked. Watching this video the same applies, every so often this huge smile appears, and his enjoyment makes me feel good. Great drummer.
As to being a Rich clone you could argue that since Buddy went back to 1921, ie before big bands, then most drummers were Rich clones. Also if you had to be called a clone then who better than Berrnard Rich.
Dude, i got 3 days of hour 1/2 personal lessons with Butch the week b4 he left to the Jazz Fest in Indiana. He is so AMAZING and he's definantly the coolest jazz drummers i've ever met, truly inspiring. He blew my mind and left me with many new ideas. if you dont know him, LEARN HIM! XP
He looks so relaxed it's incredible 🤩. There are certain parts where he could be playing drums with one hand and eating dinner with the other. What a phenomenal talent 👌
i met this guy in person, this guy, i'll tell yah, he is really fun to be around!
"The Wind Machine" was written by Sam Nestico and was played by Count Basie's band many times. It's still an important part of the Count Basie Orchestra's book.
the more I listen and watch Butch play, the more I like him
...and this band ain't half bad, either
Thanks for posting
An exceptional drummer. To compare him to Buddy Rich or vice versa doesn't insult or diminish either man. Great style and musicianship
Butch is super smooth. Everything sounds right, not rushed...
He hits the accents perfectly always.
Buddy was great, but it was always off to the races with Buddy..
Buddy lacked the taste Butch has
In September 1992 I had a gig in a restaurant in Albuquerque NM. Imagine my shock when Butch Miles was the drummer. Just me, Butch and a trumpet. I was so in awe of this incredible most elegant man I had ever met. He didn't even move his limbs when he played. A night I'll never forget!
Pure, skilled drumming at its' finest. Butch is the MAN! Tremendous sound from his Ludwig's too.
Lovely little Ludwig kit.
It not the size that counts ( for those with big kits ) , it’s the talent of the drummer.
Butch is so much like Buddy Rich, even the expression on his face.
Fantastic listening! What a sad loss to the music industry! RIP Butch you'll be sorely missed
I saw Butch play with Count Basie in Chicago years ago. He was (and is) an amazing drummer!
One of the 3 or 4 best I've ever seen. He KILLED it with Basie!
Awesome! I like to think Butch and Duffy are up there having drum battles with Basie grinning ear to ear.
A great player & a nice guy as well!
He's SO relaxed! I Love it!
Great arrangement!!!
Easily one of the greatest traps artists of all time! I love watching him play. How many of us get to do something we love this much? Everytime I see some single stroke, boom flap drummer, I remind myself there are still a few great trapset players around. Butch is in rare company indeed!
Saw Butch with Bassie in Edmonton in the late '70s. The single best concert I've ever attended. Don't know what they thought of Edmonton, but it was a great night . . .
Brent Hudson, I was at the same concert. Still the best big band concert I've ever had the privilege to see. The very first big band charts I ever played were in Jr. High School, about 1970, and a lot were Basie band arrangements by people like Neal Hefti and Sammy Nestico. I got so hooked on playing sax, especially baritone, that I ended up making a career of it - and what a pleasure it was. I heard many great big bands over the years, and played many great arrangements, but for me, Count Basie & His Orchestra have a special place. His music, and his band, literally changed the path of my life in the early 1970's, and one of the most memorable moments was meeting The Count on the afternoon of that Edmonton concert. My then employer, bandleader Big Miller, was a longtime friend of Basie's and, knowing how much I liked the band, took me along to the rehearsal to meet Mr. Basie. Butch Miles had a great night that night, and as was so often the case, everybody in the band seemed to be enjoying themselves too - it wasn't just a job. Freddy Green once said something like "Bill Basie is the first guy to get to the gig, and the last one to leave it - not because he's worried about us showing up, but because he just loves playing with the band, and knowing the audience is enjoying it."
Butch ends his solo with a lovely cymbal lullaby...not many drummers can do that.....Beautiful!!!
I knew Butch back in the ‘70’s when his wife worked at the Buck County Pub in Midtown Manhattan. They were both great people!
Sadly, third is my first time seeing Butch Miles.... What a fantastic musician! Great hands, great mind, and a smooth, crisp feel. It's like a combination Buddy Rich, and Jeff Porcar.
So Very sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Miles😔😔 Great drummer Great Person Great Humanitarian!! DAMN!!!! 😭😭 He's up there Sonny and ALL GEATS
I never get tired of listening and watching this video. Butch Miles is not only a sensational drummer, his joy of playing is infectious!
You can hear the Buddy Rich influence but frankly, Miles was a lot less aggressive, especially his use of the bass drum. Buddy would slam that thing but Butch used it like another floor tom, so artful!
I love Frank Wess
RIP
Great ! Beautiful Frank Wess Solo!

Beautiful tenor solo. Thanks Mr. Magic Wess!
Rip Butch my friend drummer ...Fantastic drummer ...
I’m not into comparing who’s better we all have our favorites, but I can say this guy takes a backseat to no one.
A lot... of Buddy in his playing. Nice job... Butch.
I had the honour of meeting Butch when he came to Paris with Eddie Jones pklayng witha French group. I wish he could have emulated Buddy leading his own band. Allas economics!!!
At 3.21...to stroke gently... MMMMMhhhhhhh!!!
Been following Butch for years and butch has always had his ducks in a row.
Master drummer...Him and Roy Burns, and Peter E... Buddy led them all to the light....Great job Butch! RIP..
Butch is tremendous. He was recommended to Count Basie by Mel Thorme and Buddy Rich back in 1975 when he was 28 and recorded the "Basie Big Band"-album the same year.
This video encapsulates the incredible talent of Butch. His seemingly effortless playing, no matter how technically difficult, loud, or as fast (or a combination of all 3) as it was, was awe inspiring. I’ll miss being able to ask you questions and you always answer them…no matter how idiotic they may have been😅. God Bless You, Butch. I’ll see you on the other side🙏
0:46 Trumpet enters early
RIP 🙏🥁
I saw him together with dan barrets international swing party at pforzheim on friday ;)
I can't help going back to watch this video again and again. I am going to give Butch 10 Stars out of a max of 10 stars. That was one terrific drum arrangement and solo. He was right on. I didn't see any errors/slipups whatsoever. Buddy would be proud of Butch's solo. it was tasty. Hopefully when I watch this again, I will stay away from commenting.
Yes that's my drum teacher
God you're so lucky...
Butch quel talent ! Quel immense batteur !!
Percussionist epitomized. Especially his light touch when he feathers the cymbals and cajoles a pleasing refrain from them, between a swinging solo.
Loujug said it ! Guy is still great.
I recommend you get the WDR band concert tribute to Buddy, with Butch on drums.
Awesome. He and Count Basie are performing with the heavenly choir.
You win. Best wishes
Butch one of the finest, thank you for the post
This is cool.Rich and bellson do their versions of this.
Buddy is who he was and butch was who he was. Both are exceptional in their own right. I guess it's a matter of preference.
Just a group of musicians having fun leave them alone you opinion makers.
I am a big Buddy fan. The smirking, smartass raging caveman was a hoot to watch and even though his solos got predictable, his style and humor were great. Butch I believe to be a better drummer with an obvious love of his instrument and joy of playing. Buddy would challenge anyone but Butch.
No contest. Buddy all the way and I should know.
BUTCH MILES
To me, he doesn't seem to be a "buddy" clone. I can see their play styles are clearly different. Both good (no, amazing), but also different from each other
His own man. Just tremendously inventive. Great left hand.
Sorry, I didn't know there were RUclips profiles. I'm a little old for that. I wasn't criticizing your choice. It was just a mentioning of past greats who came before Butch. No need for hostilities.
Awesome
@MarkR1957 An absolute disgrace, yes! Back when they did the first one I remember lots of young people going "Wow! Check out Louie Bellson!". Cathy could still run a decent business if at least she cared to feature ONE of the drummers that you mentioned every year, so that the wonderful legacy of Swing music that her father contributed to and, literally fought for, stood strong. But she's turned it into a variety show, such a shame.
UNBELIEVABLE drum solo. Why purchase a 2021 snare drum when you can buy a ludwig snare like the one Butch Miles played. What a nice crispy sound. Buddy could not give you a BETTER performance than the solos of Butch to this song.
Rest in Peace Butch
The closest to Buddy Rich with a big band ever!
Despite the high tempo it sounds very cool.
this is actually pretty relaxed for this tune.
I LOVE BUTCH MILES !!!!!!!
That's an Aussie from Melbourne on bass......Ron Francis says hi.....
A Master....
Fifty-two IS my shoe size ~
I did this song last year and did it well but not as good as Butch Miles:( He's so good I cant even copy his style:)
Not a song; no words.
...Talk about 'false endings' .......!!! -- Butch Miles is a most consummate big band drummer and is highly relaxing to listen to.... As MarkR1957 comments below, Butch Miles played on the original Basie recording of Wind Machine, on the Pablo record label, well before Buddy Rich got his teeth into it..... Basie's big band version however is superior in many ways....
Funny how he looks like Buddy Rich a little, he's probably thinking Buddy the whole time he's playing.😁 he definitely could drive a band like Buddy Rich. It's not good to have Idols but if you're going to have one I guess Buddy Rich would be the one to have.😃
Excellent!
Super swing !
Fantastic listening
wow!
With his astonishing technical chops, Butch is often compared with Buddy. But musically, he owes as much to Sonny Payne. With Basie, Sonny and Butch defined big band drumming.
Fantástico!!!!!!!!!!
Interesting arrangement. And it seems a tad bit slower too.
Great drum solo. Since Wind Machine was originally made famous by Buddy Rich,
naturally Butch's solo is similar to Buddy. However it is a nice solo, accurate, and crisp. How about the sound of his snare---and this was from 1992. Why settle for a snare from 2013 when one can get a great snare sound from 1992. I gather its a Ludwig. Does anyone know of its model? By the way, great band.
+drummerman Wind Machine was recorded by Basie several years before Buddy put it in his book.
+MarkR1957 . Thanks... I didn't know that......
Joseph Holtzman
You are welcome. Butch did a great job on the Basie record, as well.
+drummerman I believe it to be a Ludwig SupraPhonic..5 1/2 x 14. Chrome over brass? I dunno. Could've been an older Lud-alloy model. But, I honestly think it was a factory issue SupraPhonic, chrome over brass. With Ludwig "Groovers" coated head on top and a Xtra-thin Ludwig clear on the snare side. Just guessing. Somebody correct me.
Hi Keith: Do agree that Rich is miles apart....Buddy Rich will always be my favorite drummer.
Outstanding!! Love it.
yeah... but in time.
Ma786sai Dua my God Butch Miles yours is a gift, divine, that only comes from up Above
Great solo. Really liked Butch's solo versus Buddy's......However, don't forget that in 1992 Buddy had already passed away. I would have loved to see Buddy perform this solo from the arrangement used by Butch. I am sure Buddy would have done a terrific job. Boy I would of love hearing Buddy chopping on this arrangement.
Buddy recorded Wind Machine many times, Carson show, Disneyland etc. You can check and compare on RUclips.
Listen to the album. Just in time. Recorded just months before his death
@@jackturchin9182 Yes. Great drumming and great tune.
I have enough hw to do for physical chemistry; I dont have time to do YT hw too.
@MusicLessonsComp Right you are! The Buddy Rich Memorial Concerts are a joke. 95% of the "drummers" playing with B's band have zero concept of swing or Jazz or Big band playing. It's a shame that Cathy is just doing everything she can to make a buck off B's name.
She should have had guys like Butch, Joe Morello, Donny Osborne, Ed Shaughnessy, Louie Bellson - Buddy's peers, if she wanted to do these concerts.
As they stand, they are a disgrace to Buddy's memory and Legend ~
Tasteeeeey Drummer!
