I found this video by luck...and being a drummer myself, I was intrigued in the beginning by the tone of Butch's drums...full, fat and deep...unlike most big band - jazz drummers. So, that got my attention and then as the song progressed, I became more and more impressed with his skills. He gets creative and keeps things interesting for everyone concerned...including himself. You can tell, he loves what he is doing~and he does it as good as any Ive heard. LOVED IT~~!!!

Butch Miles - The greatest post WWII big band drummer, best one I heard from the late 1970s to today. Great version of this song! Somewhere Benny, even Gene are smiling.

There is no doubt that Butch Miles is one of the top drummers of our time. I have never met him but I have seen many videos and he is always smiling. I have some friends who know him and they all say that the smile is an honest reflection of the man, whom they say is one of the most friendly, good natured and nicest person they know. It really shows in his playing.

I'm an avid percussionist and sax player and I have to say this is one of the best videos I've ever seen. As always hats off to Butch. Always tasteful, never overpowering, but can kick like a mule and show off with the best of em' when appropriate.

I had the pleasure of seeing Butch live with the Count Basie Orchestra in New Orleans back around 1978-ish. Fantastic player. That same concert, the late, great dancer Gregory Hines actually sang a couple of songs with orchestra that night as well.

Buddy Rich often had acerbic comments about a lot of drummers. There were a few he spoke well of but one thing I found funny was that the ones that hung on his every word, Kind of creeped him out. Despite that, but he still recommended Butch to count Basie because he could clearly see that he understood the area like few others. Buddy would never touch sing sing sing in deference to Gene who he loved. Hearing Butch’s approach to it makes me think of how Buddy might have played it. And this is the 90s here… Butch’s hands never stopped improving. Magnificent big band drumming here. I’d love to see this with all the ensemble parts intact. They are part of the fun, you know.

Butch is a exllent percussionest that does not get a lot of mention when all the big names are tossed around but can hold his own with any of the top names Rich,Bellson ,morello (r-i-p ) Joe Ect Ect he is very fulid around the kit and makes it look effortless.

Sorry. I was spoiled by Gene Krupa's version. He was more basic and earthy on the drums. Gave it a more tribal sound and not as fluffy as this.

    • @billcorneilus6935

I knew both Gene and Buddy each was great but each played certain songs there way for the smooth feeling Gene was the best and Buddy was the power house. Both men admired each other totally. Butch Miles used to slip into the music room at school and practice. All beautiful drummers.

Drago Kovac - The Harry James version is a medley of several songs which has a bit of Sing Sing Sing in it - but is definitely isn't sing sing - and Buddy Rich's tom tom backing is quite a different vibe to Gene's now immortalised 'swung jungle rhythm'.

I agree. However, this is not to say that Butch is not as good as Krupa. It's just that he took a proven recipe and tried to improve on it. This is one of the songs that should not be changed. Can you imagine a different version of "Take 5" by Joe Morello? Some things should be left alone.
