    The Slingerland days. Got to see Louie live many times and he never failed to dazzle and amaze. Swinging. Gifted. And genuinely one of the nicest guys to ever grace this earth. Have his actual Dynasonic snare which was meticulously restored. Cherish it.

    My high school physics teacher was a drummer in his day. He said he remembered when they released Duke Ellington's record with Louie's song, Skin Deep. The first drum solo recorded with two bass drums. My teacher told me that at the time, nobody knew there were two bass drums and guys were "almost breaking their ankles trying to play the bass drum that fast with one foot." I always thought that was funny. My drum instructor knew Louie pretty well, and always said he was the sweetest guy you'd ever meet.

      Thanks for sharing that, Tony. I met Louie my senior year in high school at a Drumset competition. He choose me as the winner and I was able to perform with him that evening He was so nice and encouraging. Thanks!

    Great analysis of Louie's playing. He was a great player with showmanship quality and a true gentleman. What makes your videos stand out is your enthusiasm and knowledge of the history behind these great players. Any serious drum player really needs to watch your videos. You're a real pro and we appreciate your efforts...thank you again!!

    Louie was definitely one of the best drummers ever. He was a great instructor helping millions with his video series including myself. Great person indeed. Super commentary Garey and it's nice to see your enjoyment watching and relating your knowledge. You have a fine history here and are obviously a real talent yourself.

    Like you I also had the privilege to meet Louie. During High School, my drum teacher was Louie's brother Henry, who taught at a music store in the L.A. area owned by Mel Zelnick and Terry Gibbs. Louie gave more than one impromptu drum lesson to this undeserving drummer. I even got to meet his then-wife, the equally talented singer Pearl Bailey. Years later I met Louie at a drum seminar put on by a local music store and we got a chance to talk about drumming and about his brother. It was an honor knowing the man!

    Back in the early 90's he gave a drum clinic at Dynamic Percussion in Manchester Conn. I got there very early and the owner said..Ronnie, I have to get Louis at the airport..can you set up his kit? I said, "SURE" and was tickled pink. He designed some special sticks & mallets. I'm told he had 3 kits...1 for the East coast...1 for the West...and 1 in Chicago. The clinic was great & he's such a warm human being. His brother plays drums also.

    I would like to see one on Elvin Jones, I’m not a drummer but there seems to be a lot of confusion about him. One guy will praise him and another thinks he’s horrible.

    • @Nissardpertugiu
      @Nissardpertugiu 4 года назад +1

      Elvin approach is abstract .
      Its out of drumming
      Its like modal register sometimes like Atonal saxophone and guitar etc... for atmosphere , out tempo thing
      Raw stuff
      But in other hand he was very clean and Articulate , melodic .
      He is like another instrument instead of just drums .
      Like piano , he interact with the phrasing of ochestra .

  • @Nissardpertugiu
    @Nissardpertugiu 4 года назад +1

    The first double bass lick is in fact a quad but with the ride hand only
    I ripped off that
    Nobody does in metal , especially of my generation
    Im 26
    One of his signature stuff is doing this with a hit hat on left hand on each stroke timing .
    It looks something very cool executed and very Fast , and looks weird haha ..

    LOVED Louie! I was fortunate enough to see him several times with his big band at Donte's Jazz Club which was literally about 350 feet from our house. Besides being enormously talented and masterful in his playing, he was a true gentleman and kindness, humility and grace just radiated from him. He was also a true musician who had a commanding understanding of music theory and not just drums. He composed and arranged hundreds of pieces. I got a chance to attend a three-day clinic he did with Billy Cobham back in the late 70's and he was a terrific and generous teacher as well. Lots of people mention more showy, egotistical soloists who are more famous. But Louie could do all the flashy, fast and showy stuff AND serve a song where some others just used the song as a vehicle to show off and step all over the piece in the process. Completely irreplaceable and original!
