These very great singers of the past literally bring a tear to the eye. The singers of my generation (2024) might be good, but they can't compare to the brilliance of these mega-stars from almost half a century ago. OMG, I was blown away. The audience reaction told the tale each and every time a singer finished his or her aria. Bravissimi a tutti.

Chapeau!

Thank you!! Isn't it wonderful that Vien Concert was smart enough to capture a broadcast of a piece of those greatest singers at this time that was like no other. Little did we know we were going to experience a time of what would be the Golden Age of the Opera. The memories here bring up such an ache of what I know will never be, again. I watched in 1979, while the father of my children was performing at Lyric Opera of Chicago. This concert reveals who were among the greats that were the cause of 'sold out' opera houses every season. Into the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, the houses were becoming a common life style. This night, Caballe was recent of her tenor husband's career, suddenly, ended by a heart attack, and here, she was visibly in abdominal discomfort per 2 recent surgeries. She never made public her life medical battles. When wonderful Caballe was on, she was on like no other. 10 surgeries in 10 years that was never to be known, she was one of the greatest of the last Divas of the 20th C. There is so much to say of those in 1979 Vien concert that does bring back wonderful memories of them all. I have to say, I have lived a rich life, because of the opera singers, we came to love so much. But so many are unseen in Vien 1979, too. To those who, now, view the Vien Concert 1979, for the first time, you are correct to realize that today, there are no singers like those of that time. The desert years are here. Thank you for this wonderful New Years celebration night. Best to all for 2025.🌹

Vielen Dank!!!

I attended the "American Institute of Musical Studies" (Aims) in Graz, Austria the Summer of 1979. Sherrill Milnes and Eleanor Steber were both there. I had three lessons with Steber and it was magical. So to see this recording, recorded in 1979, brings back the quality of singing that is hard pressed to hear today. What a blockbuster of a concert this must have been to attend.

Baltsa makes history here with one of the very best “Non piu mesta”s-as the Vienna audience clearly realizes! Perhaps she reaches a bit for that final note, unnecessarily. And it seems unfortunate that such a flexible and juicy voice went on to sing the big spinto mezzo roles in Verdi’s … rather than more Rossini. But I don’t know the whole story.

It would be impossible to get a cast as impressive as these singers together for a concert now - and yes I know there are issues of intonation for some , but these are great artists. Sona Ghazarian had a fine career , but was probably the least well known name here at the time, yet she sings the Violetta scena wonderfully. The whole event was rich in great performances.

This was the famous concert that caused the rift between Carreras and Domingo. Domingo switched the order around with the excuse that he had to conduct as well and Carreras was apparently only informed at the last moment . As a result Carreras never appeared that night (he walked out and left the theatre ) and Domingo filled in and sang 2 arias
