What courage and dedication it took for her do the crossover may not be as appreciated as it should be (remember there was not a template for how to meld rock and opera). But she knew musical genius when she heard it and she was working with not only a besotted Freddie Mercury but a wonderful crew (Mike Moran in particular... "What do I do? Pretend you're on the Met stage, close your eyes and let her rip and good Lord did she!). To then turn around and go back to this classical recital world with verve is indeed testament to her extraordinary talent. I agree this performance seemed maybe lighter, happier than some others and I'm ready to attribute it to the freedom "Barcelona" afforded her...that and the love between her and Freddie...a love story for a lifetime.
Remember these things about this performance-this is during the same period Montse was working with Freddie Mercury. I see renewed drama and vigor in her singing that may well derive from the newfound freedom she found in working with Freddie. The dress she is wearing here is the same one she wore in some of the “Barcelona” performances with Freddie. She is on her home turf of Barcelona with this recital, where she is universally known and loved.. I cannot help but think much of her solo performances from this period are for or in loving memory of Freddie.
I do t know the name of the duet, but the last one they sang was from Norma between Norma and Adalgisa.. It’s the happy duet where Adalgisa was telling Norma of her newfound love and Norma was reminiscing about when she met her love ( Pollione). Neither one knows the guy in question is Pollione.
