And there's a decent chance he misinterpreted the name because the terms for "immortals" and "companions" (the letter not being an uncommon name for units, see Alexander I. unit designations) are easily mistaken.
The Stormtrooper armor was more of a survivalist suit than combat armor. They were built to comfortably endure extremely hazardous areas and climates such as in the vacuum of space, areas that are heavily radioactive and poisonous, as well as planets with fairly extreme hot and cold temperatures. This is why in A New Hope, all those Stormtroopers on Tattoine were able to walk around unphased under the baking suns. Even in combat the armor had its uses. While the plasteroid material has often been criticized for not being able to block blaster fire, they were still able to provide sufficient protection against less potent blaster rounds and solid slugs. And the fact that these armor sets could completely cover a human body, made them ideal for protection against flying debris, splinters and shrapnel. If the armor had one major flaw, it was the lens on the helmets. Several characters such as Luke, Rex and Migs from The Mandelorian found them difficult to see through.

The pyramidal designs actually date all the way back to the Gree, who forged the Black Pyramids, ships that would gather up force-sensitives from across the galaxy before settling on Tython where they became the first temples of the Je'daii - precursors to Jedi and Sith orders alike. At least, in 'legends'... I would also think that the 'simple' armour shown by the early Republic (and later Rebellion) is ideal for a peacetime military - it's cheap and simple, but the same practices can be scaled up to larger armour sets in times of need. More practically, the same armour / helmets can be reassigned to new warriors with little-to-no adjustment, whereas high-quality plate armour needs to be individually fitted. That was one of the key advantages to the clone army - with each clone physically identical, they could wear mass-produced armour that had been custom-fitted.
Speaking of the time of the Old Republic, have anyone ever thought that the time when the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire coexisted with one another was one of the most exciting periods in the galactic history? To me, it certainly is.

You have NO idea how many times I've thought of that! Showing just how good the old days armor was at the height of the Republic's military power. Even giving Sith like Ventress a run for her money in one-on-one combat!
Didn't the Rebellion see Storm Troopers in their armour and consider how dumb it was to wear armour that limited your ability to see and move when it melted like hot butter in the face of any blaster of lightsaber more powerful than the Star Wars equivalent of a BB gun?
I’ll never understand why they would change the visor design from phase 1 to the phase 2 design which is much, much harder to see out of with narrower slits where people’s eyes actually are. And they never really show wether the helmets have some kind of camera/enhanced viewing system. The only one that is explicitly shown is when they flip down their antennas (?!?) to get zoom abilities. The lore is kind of a mess there.
Why don't they make the armor mirror reflective. And have wire grid to redirect energy and magnets facing same so if with force pushes then together it would have more opposing force
