      Nerdist But Star Wars Blaster bolts don’t act like lasers at all. It wouldn’t be visible if it was a laser and it would hit its target instantaneously instead of traveling in slow visible bolts. Also doesn’t help that your explanation contradicts information from both Legends and Disney Canon

    Clone armor - It stops the blaster
    _(Or you survive or you die in some hours...)_
    Stormtrooper armor - It absorbs the blaster
    _(You probably survive a shot.)_
    Mandalorian Armor, made of Beskar - It reflects the blaster
    _(This thing keep you alive against light sabers, blasters and bullets.)_
    Jedi Robe - It increases your magic powers, maybe.
    _(Is really cool)_

      actually jedi robes are kinda stupid its never said armor stops them from using the force and they can use the force to increase they physical capabilities so not like its gonna encumber them and in legends you can see some old republic sith lords using battle armor

    • @korbin58
      @korbin58 5 лет назад +37

      Eh, it is and isn’t. There are several reasons why the Jedi don’t use armor on a regular basis, probably the most common one being due to training.
      Fighting in loose clothing and fighting in armor are two very different experiences. Armor adds weight and does restrict movement. While there are armors like the stormtroopers where it is light and made to somewhat be bearable in mobility, that is mostly taking a soldiers mobility into consideration, not a Jedis. Jedi use various powers and forms to augment their abilities, many of them focusing on how they move around the battlefield. Form IV lightsaber combat, for example, utilizes extremely difficult acrobatic maneuvers that would otherwise be difficult with armor on.
      This isn’t to say that no Jedi used armor at all, but it was fairly uncommon. Obi Wan used a full suit of clone body armor in the beginning of the war to help him survive against blasters. Once he became more proficient in deflecting blaster bolts he removed sections of the armor for the sake of mobility. Even in the Old Republic era there were Jedi who utilized sections of armor into their robes.
      Another reason as to why you don’t see more Jedi using armor is that armor typically costs money. While the Jedi were a part of the republic and greatly respected and often requested for help in military operations, they weren’t always given a great deal of funding. In times of war this would be easier since I believe the republic gave them star fighters and such, but in times of peace owning and up keeping armor would be considerably more difficult. Most Jedi lived frugal lives, often times having very little money or material possessions as a form of discipline. This lack of funding is part of the reason why armor is a bit more of a rarity among Jedi and could very from one to the next.

    • @thetheory6159
      @thetheory6159 5 лет назад +7

      @Korbin Although I could easily see a Jedi deciding to go rogue and become a mercenary. Mandalorian armor doesn't really prevent their mercs from being 'jump-around-like-a-kangaroo-on-acid-with-a-jetpack' style, and doesn't really restrict their mobility at all -- as seen in clone wars. From that point on, the MAIN threat to a jedi is being surrounded from literally all sides to where he can't possibly deflect all incoming blasts, so the mandalorian armor might come in handy then.

    The Stormtrooper's armor is also designed to spread the energy out over their entire body, effectively stunning them. So when you see a trooper go down he might not be dead from the blaster hit but just immobilized.

    • @EvilParagon2
      @EvilParagon2 6 лет назад +61

      Which also makes them immune to weaponry that doesn't have a high energy output, like balistic weaponry.
      Even .50cal wouldn't knock them out being displaced across their whole body (though it'd probably hurt, a lot).

    • @Nero4twenny
      @Nero4twenny 6 лет назад +55

      Almost. The armor was only *resistant* to projectile weapons and blast shrapnel and protecting the wearer from glancing blaster bolts. Even this advanced armor often couldn't always save its wearer from direct blaster shots. However, it was possible for a trooper to survive direct hits, and after a quick bath in bacta, he was ready for service again.
      Slugthrowers were projectile weapon that fired solid projectiles enveloped in energy (known as slugs), as opposed to the energy bolts of a blaster. Slugthrowers were used by the Tusken Raiders of Tatooine. Fun Fact - These were surprisingly useful against lightsabers, as when a slug made contact with a blade, it simply melted instead of being deflected like a blaster bolt. These melted embers could then fly toward the face or hands of the lightsaber user.

      Evil Paragon 2 a .50 cal armor piercing would rip right through the armor though. It'll disperse the shock throughout the entire body but the slug will still go through and fuck up the stormtrooper. Also if it does stop it, the shock from a .50 will kill you even if the shock is dispersed throughout the body. A 50 cal hits with 12000-15000ft/lbs of energy. No one, wearing any sort of armor can survive that.

    • @Duncecap64
      @Duncecap64 6 лет назад +2

      eh boron carbide might argue that "no one can survive a hit like that" since its designed to break apart the round itself and force its surface area to increase drastically relative to its volume. Seeing a 7.62 round leave no impact on non hardened clay after it hit the plate is quite surprising to say the least. AP rounds though were designed to rip through armor so yeah its going to go through, granted if you have that kind of firepower on hand then its probably not for the regular troops. Thing about weapons and armor is practicality and just because its more powerful doesn't mean its more useful. Compare the HVAP of the 76mm Sherman to the 17lb Sabot used by the Sherman Firefly and you see despite the fact the sabot has insanely high penetration, the fact it cant reliably hit the target made it not as useful as the HVAP round which could still pen the 4 in of armor the tiger had reliably at 500 yards. There is compromise to everything, as a barret 50 isnt exactly light to use.

    • @FrozenByFire3
      @FrozenByFire3 6 лет назад

      Duncecap64 well the smaller lighter barret m107a3 is quite wieldy, check Miculek shooting one at pretty much full auto speeds. You could also set yourself up far away with a 50cal Gatling gun (gau19) and lay waste to an entire army of stormtroopers. And bullets go way faster than the blaster shots.

    Plastoid armor does exactly as Kyle stated. Even though most stormtroopers in the films look like they're dead upon hit, the force of the blast knocks them out, and in the (canon) EU it states that stormies survive around 70%-80%of hits from plasma weapons

    When you consider the cost of having to recruit and train new soldiers to replace the ones that get killed thanks to their cheap, shitty armor, wouldn't it be vastly cheaper in the long run to just give them good armor? The cheap armor would also adversely affect morale, thus reducing combat effectiveness and resulting in even more deaths and possibly even causing the loss of battles, meaning you lose valuable territory and resources. And when people see how poorly equipped your troops are and how high their mortality rate is, that's going to make it increasingly difficult to recruit replacements, which would require you to spend even more money on more propaganda and recruitment offices.

It actually disperses the energy across their entire body, which overwhelms the nervous system and knocks them out. Also, going back to the Tarkin doctrine, overwhelming uniform force makes the Empire seem unending

    I think there is also another explanaition. When a modern soldier in an armor vest is hit - he is usually incapacitated at least temporarily by the hit even if a bullet is stopped. Modern armor is the same compromise, especially regarding weight and mobility. Its designed more to prevent letal injuries than to make a soldier a dreadnought collecting bullets and still killing enemies. Are we sure all those stormtroopers are really dead? We might jus see most of them in the next battle after a week in a hospital.

      I have this same theory, yes the troopers go down, BUT are they dead? We couldn’t conceive of this in our modern military, all soldiers are valuable on some level, but in the Empire where Stormtroopers are considered elite soldiers and at the same time expendable in comparison to their mission. We see plenty of troopers go down with the other Troopers not even batting an eye because they’re trained to be focused only on the task at hand. But I do remember in A New Hope after the opening battle when Vader boards the ship, one trooper cradling another that had been shot, maybe implying that the trooper was still alive at the time, just incapacitated.

      You couldn't really tell because there seems to be absolutely no indication of the identity of the soldier, or even their rank (only officers wear rank insignia in SW). In a 'real' military, there are different grades of privates and corporals and whatnot and they are all identifiable by rank insignia on their uniforms, while the Star Wars Imperial military doesn't display this. This makes the soldiers even more replaceable, and also makes it more difficult for the opponents to tell the true size of the imperial forces

    The armor is resistant to medium strength blasters, but the rebels usually use heavy very strong weapons that can one-hit the storm troopers. It is actually quite heavy and effective, but also cheap. It works by dispersing blaster fire across the body instead of stopping it. Also adding to the fact that many of the storm troopers are actually unconscious instead of dead, which is why in some of the movies you see them ‘come back from the dead.’

It is made of a Mk 2 material, while they use a Mk 3 version in some parts of Tie Fighters, and a Mk 4 version in AT-ATs. I may be wrong, however, so please let me know if that is the case.

    My idea on blaster is they are concussive weapons and not designed to pierce. Because lets face, it weapons that can cut and tear through things on space ships is a bad idea for space infantry warfare. But a weapon that hits a target then almost instantly transfers all it's energy into a single shock, is safer in space ships and stations. Thus when a bolt hits someone it is like getting hit with a sledge hammer, thus bones break and organs bruise or rupture. But if it strikes a hull plate or something, it is less likely to create a hull breach. This kinda explains why the armor takes light damage to it but the people go down so hard. Because those people getting hit, are having an entire section of their body is getting smashed from the extreme shock. And remember skin is good at holding things together under such conditions, they aren't exploding into a bloody mess either. Which would happen if a large amount of heat energy pierced into the body and well vaporized part of it.

      There's a difference between 'scary' and 'intimidating'. 'Scary' is entirely subjective and is to instil fear, which could trigger fight instincts where the target will make it a point to take down as many as they can as fast as they can and give others a chance to get away. 'Intimidating' is less subjective and is to demoralise, which is more likely to result in the target throwing down their weapon and surrendering.

    Love your stuff, and I just wanna toss in some lore that existed (extended universe) at least before it was dismissed by Disney.
    Blasters: They utilize Plasma as they suggest, keeping it liquidized via a special energy coating (kinda like force field tech they use for hanger bays and such) until contact in which it then detonates.
    Storm-trooper Armour: The Armour is cheap, as you've said - But what it does is distributes the damage through the black-suit underneath, which is designed to regulate more then just environmental - But also impact/kinetic energy... The Armour isn't designed to be a solution against being attacked - But rather to ensure they'll survive with no more then a Knock Out, so that they can get strapped into new Armour afterwards and sent back into the War Effort. Survival VS Combat Activeness.
    It was designed with that intent because the old Clone Trooper Armour was tough vs survivable - Clone Trooper Armour was meant to take hits so you could keep fighting but if you got hit in just the right spot, you'd be dead for sure basically.
    Keep up the good shit, just hope this mayhaps explains some confusion!

      Hatesh Warkio Nah not really, personally I can't think of a time in the OT that happens, but you could chalk that up to the rebellion not using standardised blasters, some being more powerful than others. The only consistant blaster they seem to have though is Solo's DL-44, punching through most armours and even the occupants.

    • @HateshWarkio
      @HateshWarkio 6 лет назад

      *Nathan Mason*
      Isn't there Han Solo shot into the arm and still continuing the fight during episode V or VI?
      Why does the rebellion which are basically criminals for the Empire have better blasters than the Empire?
      And where did they get them?
      Why isn't Stormtrooper's armor then better as protection for the most likely weapon to be used against it?
      If it is because it is supposed to be cheap then isn't better for those Stormtroopers die anyway instead of being knocked out? Dead Stormtrooper means one down for your army. Knocked out Stormtrooper means one down for your army for this battle and if you lose it is a potential leak of information or even a new member of rebellion and if you win he has to be taken care of and sent to some medical wing on the ship or something which costs money too.
      Why does the Stormtrooper's mask have something like upside down smiley or mustache, depends on how you view, on it?

      Repins Watson gladly Plastoid, or plasarmor, was the material used in the armor of the Galactic Republic's clone troopers, and later in the ImperialStormtrooper Corps. Plastoid tubing was often used to reinforce the walls of buildings. Some of the structures in Mos Eisley on Tatooine were made from this material.
      Plastoid was also used to produce sturdy chairs and other furniture, and even non-lethal slug rounds. These plastoid rounds were known to be used by the Republic's Senate Commandos for crowd control and situations where killing was undesirable. One place where chairs manufactured of this material were found was on the Galactic Alliance ship Admiral Ackbar.
      Plastoid was also used as a prosthetic material. Mirta Gev was one such user who used the material to repair her broken nose

    I also think it's important to realize whenever we see storm troopers they fight and succeed via overwhelming numbers. As dark as it sounds the armor could be made cheaply enough to kill the trooper that is hit but strong enough to not be penetrated and kill an entire squad in one shot. Maybe it's made to tailor to their overwhelming numbers tactics and is about unit survival over individual survival. This would be in line with how storm troopers are seen in the star wars canon.

    In Legends, blasters are plasma weapons.
    Well, to be more accurate... they're particle beam weapons.
    They are fueled by a gas, that is then heated up and sped up.
    They aren't laser weapons.
    The physical impact of even that small amount of mass hitting you that quickly, plus the temperature change, and finally the air pressure change when it impacts a surface makes it easy to conclude that the stormtroopers' armor works. It just is better at keeping them alive than to actually keep them in the fight.
    This plus the fact that these troopers are hired to do this.
    They aren't like the clones, so making sure they survive is more important than keeping them in the fight.
    Which you prefer if you were offered a suit of armor?
    80% chance to survive the shot, but you are knocked out
    50% chance for you to die to the shot but you aren't knocked out if you do survive

      Lasers behave absolutely nothing like what we see in star wars. Plasma is "basically gases", but it's a lot denser and viscous than gases, so it stays together a lot better than normal gases (well, it's obviously not a gas at all. More like a mix between a gas and a liquid). It's also electromagnetic, so electromagnetism can be used to keep a bolt together. If you look at plasma cutters the plasma doesn't just fart out in every direction like Kyle would want us to believe. It goes forward in a stream, until it cools down to a normal gas again.

    • @bluephoenixguy1094
      @bluephoenixguy1094 6 лет назад +8

      I know Wikipedia isn't the best source for information but this is the closest thing to what I was talking about. Plasma weapons of sorts are in the works but are experimental.
      "The weapon was able to produce doughnut-shaped rings of plasma and balls of lightning that exploded with devastating thermal and mechanical effects when hitting their target and produced pulse of electromagnetic radiation that could scramble electronics."
      Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MARAUDER
      It is obvious that we can't produce anything on the scale or as refined as Starwars, but the science is heading in the direction. It has been proven that plasma can be fired out in a self-sustaining doughnut shape. If you were to tighten it up a whole lot, it would probably look a lot like a blaster bolt. It also stated that it explodes on impact which would explain the way Starwars blaster bolts seem to explode on impact.
      My comment was mainly to state the more likely reason for the armor being the way it is. It seemed to be a bit far-fetched that the empire (which has lots of press to deal with) would risk using armor that didn't work most of the time. I mean, most modern military body armor for troops can block ~3-4 rifle shots. With the way Stormtroopers were dropping you'd think that they would be better off without the armor. It would make sense for them to be knocked out though as it would ensure that the wearer would be more likely to survive. Hell, even getting shot in modern days wearing a bulletproof vest can knock you out if you aren't used to the force and people seem to like them as is. Why would that change a long long time ago in a galaxy far far away?

    That covers the theory my wife and I came up with as well, when our daughter, now an RN, asked us when we introduced her to the OT. Based in part on flak jackets, and the armor issued when dad was in the Corps, and the armor her mom was issued, before taking her retirement in 2013.
    Even took her to a company that makes modern soft, and hard armor, when we were out west.
    And as someone who is here because he was wearing a level 3A vest, how kevlar works, is spot on with your example.
    Well done my fellow long haired student of the applied sciences. It also works the same way with arrows or bolts, tangling the broadhead, spreading out the force over a larger area.
    Saved my life against a guy holding up a gas station one night, in my early 20s. Ended up fired, not because of the vest, but because I ignored the no weapons rule, at work.

      @Chrisrtian Dauz They don't die, they're incapacitated as Toto Wolff stated. Its similar to be tasered which is why they collapse and fall down instantly. Larger weapons found on space craft however can be lethal as it would overwhelm the dissipating action and still inflict a lethal amount of energy. Additionally, some rebels carry larger illegally modified weapons which can be lethal, but most rebels don't have access to these, only the elite tier special ops types.

      I originally thought the same thing, but the question remains, how does the magnetic field remain stable or present, once it has left the blaster? I always felt that this whole "laser"-gun concept was totally unrealistic, since in the movies the bolts travelled definitely slower than lightspeed, and as you said, a reflective suit (even cheaply made) would be a dozen times more effective in preventing blaster bolt penetration (also in space battles). So why don't they all wear reflective armor, or why are spaceships not mirroring?
    A, in my opinion, better explanation for this blaster bolt phenomenon would be that all blaster weapons in star wars shoot actual projectiles, maybe containing or emitting plasma, and this could also explain why Stormtroopers wear so thin armor:
    As seen many times before, the Empire is more about showing power than being actually effective in weapon/ship design, so maybe the armor is only build for "smaller calibers" like handguns, since they are the most common weapons in Star Wars...
    Also, in canon (in this case The Clone Wars) troopers often refer to "ammunition", which wouldn't make sense since laser guns would be powered by battery.

      Eh, the rebellion used to be the republic, the single greatest political power in the universe. The empire is Run Like Soviet Russia, China, and North Korea. The Republic was run much more similarly to the way the U.S. is run. What happened was that the Republic was overthrown by an elected politician that was using his position to begin feuds with other governments such as the Trade Federation, etc. Specifically, he was creating unacceptable trade blockades and tarrifs on the goods produced by the trade federation(they made most of the droids and biodroid technology that the Republic imported). The blockades and tariffs got so ridiculous that a war broke out, with the Trade Federation blowing the doors off of the capital city of Naboo, a strong political hub. In the hysteria of war, he managed to basically get himself elected emperor. The people who founded the rebellion and eventually the new Republic were basically the elites of the old Republic, with nearly limitless sums of money and things, that they simply had to tuck away on distant planets and carefully manage. Also, a lot of connections run deep and after what went down, between the many other governments across the galaxy and the newly founded Empire(which basically backstabbed them all) it's pretty easy to call in favors or at the very least get access to purchase high end weaponry. It is important to note that x-wings were built with cutting edge technology at the time they were being used by the Rebellion, and that while they couldn't outrun Tie Fighters in a straight sprint, they were typically more agile, had better on-board communications and strategic instruments. No, the rebellion was not poor, they were however growing tired, and their numbers were dwindling down. As far as access to good weapons, spacecraft, etc. They were good to go. Anyone in the universe with the guts to do so, was backing them 100%.

    Hi Kyle,
    The blaster as a DEW is a plasma weapon that conceivably uses laser energy to excite what is known in the SW universe as Tibanna gas into an energetic plasma. The plasma exits the barrel of the blaster, enveloped in a short-lived EM containment field that’s maintained by some of the energy contained in the plasma.
    Most every blaster has two different, depletable ammunition magazines that together create each energy bolt fired from the blaster. One of these “magazines” is a power supply characterized as having a significant energy density that energizes the plasma, creates the initial containment field and allows for the compression of the plasma into a smaller volume making for a more energetic round.
    The other “magazine” is a Tibanna gas cartridge that makes for the physical element of the blaster bolt.
    This description is pretty much the inner workings of how a blaster operates according to canon sources. The persistent EM containment is a matter of technology unknown to our early 21st century tech.
    Otherwise, the blaster bolt’s behavior is co-consistent with the observed effects and behaviors of the laser explanation posited by you.

      And going back to "Ewoks case" - GE could not wipe planet as they tried to make its usefulness/purpose as hidden as possible but they deployed some troopers and AT-ST as general defence force of their hidden base. In normal circumstances (i.e. if Ewoks rebels on their own) they could always eradicate life on planet from orbit so they do not really had to care about long lasting defences.

      That's called "plot armor" and only the writers can get through that.

    Assumption: Stormtroopers who are incapacitated are killed or even severely injured.
    Assumption: The plasma is uncontained when it exits the barrel. I believe lightsabers, bolts, and all SW energy weapons and tools supposedly use EMF containment to prevent this rapid dissipation. How the field is maintained in transit, I have no idea....
    Assumption: Glancing and direct hits have differing effects.... That is all.
    ....
    I mean ok regardless what the blaster bolts are they would all have similar effects even if they "struck" in someone's very near vicinity, never mind hit them directly. But it would still likely not be lethal to an armored target (even some of our armor).
    .....
    And also, if it is anything contained by an EMF, it would likely have a relatively short maximum range, but wouldn't lose much effectiveness over that range, unlike traditional "impact-based" weapons. Virtually no "bullet" drop or environmental influence, either, except other strong EMFs, which is presumably what shielding is primarily in the SW universe, which explains why star destroyers have 2 spaced spheres as the source of their shields and why torpedoes and ships can pass through them.

      Also, if both Blasters and Lightsabers use electromagnetically contained plasma, it would explain why blaster bolts reflect off of lightsabers. The fields interact with each other.
      Which makes me think that there could be a situation where a Jedi tries to block a slugthrower shot with his lightsaber and gets shot in the face anyway. (I did the calculation. Even if the lightsaber had 5000°C, the bullet would heat up by a mere fraction of a degree while passing through it.)

  • @TheCaniblcat
    @TheCaniblcat 4 года назад +1

    IIRC SW cannon defines a blaster bolt as a plasma contained in a magnetic field. Upon impacting a solid (or liquid?) object the magnetic field collapses, forcing the plasma to expand (like a shaped charge) into the impacted surface.
    IMO, that jives with both the slower than light speed as well as the retaining coherence of the energy bolt, and with the fire/smoke on impact.

      This is what I was thinking watching this video. When cops wearing armour are shot the protocol is to immediately check their vests for a bullet catch, which will look like a coin from splatting flat against it. The force is like a bowling ball smashing your chest can knock officers down, unconscious or keel over in extreme pain, but after medical attention is very survivable.

    1. blasters form a bolt so they can't shoot lasers, which form a ray.

      While olodemolo MCAroom is correct that most troopers are essentially put into a "down but not out" state when hit there is the thing that most hits we see in the movies are made with heavy blasters which can pierce most armor so most of the troopers we see get hit probably do die.

    Gotta say that the expanse covered the laser weapons issue pretty nicely. In that, the armor is ablative and they use what are effectively smoke grenades to keep the lasers from working entirely. They also covered the compromise you mentioned effectively by giving most soldiers good enough armor and weapons and then giving the best of hte best (the recon marines) armor that makes them literally invulnerable to standard infantry weapons (as in, one woman trained as a marine with this armor cleared an entire ship of security personnel without even having a gun). They also deal with the scaling against vehicles issue much more sensibly than star wars in two ways. One, infantry weapons can't even scratch spacecraft (they describe one vessel they had as "it might have been welded together crap, but it was welded together crap meant to withstand micrometeorites), and two, spacecraft weapons with shred even the best infantry armor (literal 30 year old PDC weapons destroyed armor based around some absolutely insane alien tech). That, and their spacecraft are almost unarmored because maneuverability is better than trying to stop railgun rounds that move "at a measurable fraction of c" and "could shoot a 2 kilo slug through a small moon" (or something to that effect). I could go on all day about the expanse, it's just so good (the books, at least. The TV show is merely pretty good)
