It was August 2020,lockdown period. My brothers 5 string ibanez bass was lying around. Thought id give it a try. Since there was nothing much to do, I started practicing everyday for like 8 hours. I was also going through a major heartbreak. I will complete two years this August. This instrument has helped me so much mentally I cannot even put it to words. ❤️

My mom did the same out of when I did weird faces with saxophone- especially during a solo. She had a tally of how many times I'd briefly close my eyes during a passage and it's embarrassing to say it's well in the hundreds from high school alone, let alone college.

Afterwards my bassist friend asked him for any advice on playing. He said "yeah, don't play bass" and left the club. Just couldn't understand how someone so good could be so bitter

I loved "The Jazz Elitist". Reminds me of a drum solo by a jazz professor I heard. He succeeded in making the entire audience (and his band) lose time in the first 10 seconds.
It reminded me of a video I watched of legendary jazz guitarist Joe Pass performing an extremely well-known standard (though now I can't recall the name of it). Yeah, Joe's a fantastic player, but between all of the fancy jazz chords and elaborate embellishments, I literally could not find the actual melody. Like, I knew the melody, and I simply could not detect it anywhere in what he was playing.

Best thing ever happen to me. Today I'm the happy bass player after 40 years ab playing bass. When I was 15 I was the (not so skilled) third guitarist who want to join. And - there was a bass in the corner. So what. I started learning playing bass. Amd sometimes I played 12 string in the band (cause I was the one who own this instrument and was able to tune it). But bass was much more fun. So many guitarists around and not many bassists.

The bassist (Chris Murphy) for Canadian band Sloan is one guy you should take a listen to, he uses a pick and plays in the style of Paul McCartney. His bass lines are extremely melodic and not exactly for beginners. Their song Follow the leader is a great example of his mastery of the bass.
I’m actually extremely glad I can say I’m the happy guy, never took a lesson a day in my life and I know I’m not good but I love using bass and/or guitar as an emotional outlet and a form of expression
I'm #6 (but like... not that fast) and #7 (I have neither the money nor memory to get new strings). I also basically always tune by ear, unless I'm moving by something other than a whole step (e.g. D to Drop C#), or I'm just off in the weeds.

I am a mix of THE METAL GUY, the guy who never changes strings (seriously, I haven't changed the strings once on my 15Yo Bass, though I don't play often), and the really happy guy.
Honestly, I'm just the guy who can play bass well enough to be treated like a good bassist by other bassists, but consistently feels subpar the moment they see any bassist on the internet. Also I'm the bassist who is good at one style of playing but struggles with others (I can play fingerstyle on upright and electric no problem, but slap on both just elude me or some reason, which sucks because the internet loves to push slap bass above all other styles).
Jaco #13 and #8 for me. I'm a Jaco elitist along with Victor Wooten for sure. I'm all about basing tones off Jaco's sound and I based a lot of my electric bass tones and writings based off of a lot of his stuff. I write a lot of prog rock/metal/in between, so it has a good fit in that style.
I started out as the serious practicer, which turned me into the really bored guy, then I discovered Cecil Taylor, met some cool people and became the avant garde bassist which made me a really, really happy person. 😃

Dinosaur Jrs bassist does something very similar as well. They're still bassists but they're almost like a giant rhythm guitar as well.

I’m actually extremely glad I can say I’m the happy guy, never took a lesson a day in my life and I know I’m not good but I love using bass and/or guitar as an emotional outlet and a form of expression

I'm #6 (but like... not that fast) and #7 (I have neither the money nor memory to get new strings).
I also basically always tune by ear, unless I'm moving by something other than a whole step (e.g. D to Drop C#), or I'm just off in the weeds.
I'm genuinely impressed. Didn't think you'd actually get to the type of bassist I am. But there I am. Number 15. Only got 5 basses I can't play, but it's me!

I am a mix of THE METAL GUY, the guy who never changes strings (seriously, I haven't changed the strings once on my 15Yo Bass, though I don't play often), and the really happy guy.
Having a brother who makes crazy faces while playing bass, I can confirm that part is true
Honestly, I'm just the guy who can play bass well enough to be treated like a good bassist by other bassists, but consistently feels subpar the moment they see any bassist on the internet.
Also I'm the bassist who is good at one style of playing but struggles with others (I can play fingerstyle on upright and electric no problem, but slap on both just elude me or some reason, which sucks because the internet loves to push slap bass above all other styles).

I'm all about basing tones off Jaco's sound and I based a lot of my electric bass tones and writings based off of a lot of his stuff. I write a lot of prog rock/metal/in between, so it has a good fit in that style.
The happy guy is happy because he is playing Basket Case that could make anyone happy
I started out as the serious practicer, which turned me into the really bored guy, then I discovered Cecil Taylor, met some cool people and became the avant garde bassist which made me a really, really happy person. 😃
