Panasonic S5 VS BMPCC6K Sample Footage

- Comparing my Panasonic S5 to BMPCC6K (both original versions). I have just slapped on the LUT I was developing for over a year with my BMPCC6K to see how the Panasonic S5 would take it and in turn to see what are the differences in terms of colour science at the sensor level as the LUT is doing conversion without taking Blackmagic gamma or log into the consideration.
Turns out in some extreme edge case scenarios they are quite different but for the most part remarkably similar...

This was the side by side comparison I needed. Heroes.
🛠️💪🫡
Its amazing how close they actually compare, did not expect that! Personally, i like the colors on the s5 better than the bm6k (especially when it comes to skin), but the dynamic range is a touch better on the 6k
Actually dynamic range is a little better on Panasonic 👀😱
Thank you very much for posting the video, I was going to buy a camera and my budget was only enough for bmpcc 6k or lumix s5, I was having hard time to choose between two cameras, now I made my mind by watching your video.
So what are you getting? 🫠
@@CINENIMUS lumix s5 I hope I will not regret
@@stupidthings7339 I had both for a very long time and S5 for me is a hands down winner. The colour is better. Files smaller. Battery longer lasting. Internal stabilisation. Mirrorless. LCD thats actually viewable in day time. EVF. Size. Price. ALL the reasons why S5 is a total winner. I have been enjoying mine so much that I got a second one. Trust me if you can’t make amazing images from the S5 - you wont from anything else either.
@@CINENIMUS really appreciate it!
Fair enough!
The lumix s5 won for me that’s what I’m gettin to start up my film company
s5 is a touch warmer and bit more saturation than the B6k, loving the LUT!
Well thank you only took a year to make it haha nothing special though just a lot of curve tweaking 😎🤙
@@CINENIMUS can you sell it to us?
Haha so many people asked me about I might just as well start doing it 🙈
What an enjoyable freaking analysis to watch. And what is that beat?! 🔥
Thanks! I dont remember will be one of the free lofi stock sites
I feel like the colors from the BMD are just a tiny bit more nuanced, and there is a little bit more gradation when compared side-by-side with the s5 image, maybe because it is 12-bit vs the 10-bit on the s5? both looks great though!
I've been considering selling my 6k pro for the s5ii lately, just for the convenience factor 😂I still can't make up my mind...
@@zechenwei1139 man I was in the same place its a tough call but I made the jump and so far no regrets. Only thing BM was providing me is the extra safety net for fuckups but I just need to make sure I don’ fuck up 😂🙈👌
@@zechenwei1139 also colours can be easy matched I did not try to match them at all
@@CINENIMUS makes sense! do you use adapted EF lens with the s5ii or native L mount? I really hope I won't need to sell all my EF lenses too if I decide to switch😵
@@zechenwei1139 neither actually I use nikon lenses with a dumb adapter 🙈👌
It’s hard to beat the Pocket cameras, internal BRAW is a poor man’s RED camera anyway. The image can be softened or sharpened in Resolve plus a ton of other things like highlight recovery to white balance, tint and ISO adjustments in post.
Yes but with all the RED like features come RED like issues too haha
Cant the s5m2x do this as well with raw?
I think the LUMIX is a poor man red the fact you have all these codex’s and you can shoot in braw or pro res raw
i have both of these cameras (S5 and the 6k g2, not the pro) and they both are absolutely fantastic. the S5 i use primarily as my anamorphic camera in that i have a few anamorphic lenses for it (Sirui) and the 6k for pretty much everything else, except for my bmpcc og which is my "throw in the bag and head out" camera!
Yeah was thinking exactly the same now that their prices plummeted I got one brand new for half of what they used to be when released 😱
Is the og bk a run and gun?
@@hereweare9011 erm what? if you are asking if it's good for sun and gun - then yeah it is good not as good as S5. S5 better battery, smaller file sized, smaller better built body and so on...
@@CINENIMUS well yeah I know it's not better than a brand new camera. I was thinking of getting one since they are stupid cheap. Didn't know if you had to rig it up like the 4k version.
@@hereweare9011 you dont have to rig up 4 k or 6k either its just an internet trend people who actually use those cameras not ofter "rigging" them out otherwise forget about travelling
Skin tones on the BM look a lot more natural! Great vid!
if you read the description you will see that I only was testing the way S5 reacts to the lut that is was not designed for it in order to see how each sensor is differed. I am working on creating a new one for the S5 too and from the looks it will be as good or even better than one I made for BM. Panasonic log is really easy to work with from the get go.
@@CINENIMUS Gotcha man! Do you have a link for your BM luts? I have just recently bought the BMPCC 6K also based in Scotland.
@@cryptokingz615 no I don’t yet anyway 😎 I’m considering doing a pack for people to download for free so stay tuned…
@@CINENIMUS Awesome! I'll be sure to check it out.
Thanks!
You are welcome!
The images look great. What adapter do you use to use Nikon lenses on the lumix s5?
Just a cheapo one from amazon. Literally any dumb L to Nikon F (g) mount adapter will be the same.
@@CINENIMUSMay I ask if the autofocus still works with the adapter?
Almost the same ?! If I wouldn't know what’s is the deal- wouldn’t spot the difference. The lut 😍😎🎞️
Numbah wan fan :)
Iz me!
Both cameras produce great image, but when compared one to another i personally prefer the look from BM.
This was not to show which was better just to see if the sensor readouts of BRAW and VLOG are similar. I have by now matched them near perfect. You wouldn’t be able to differentiate 😎👌
@@CINENIMUS good. Cus i am planning on getting the new S5 :) Love the BM, but i need a camera for photography too, and with the new autofocus , well .. Going for it :)
@@IJOSoundVideo yeah I just got the S5 and it impressed me so much I sold all of my BM gear. S5mk2x will be the bomb but I might wait till the prices go down 👌
@@CINENIMUS i have the s5 and would love to see how you matched the pocket. I'd literally pay for it haha
I like the dynamic range from the bm but I think the convenience of using the s5 outweighs that for me personally. What do you think?
If you read the comment replies you will form a picture of what I think. Personally from using it for few days it’s on par with BM. Dynamic range maybe even higher just if you really mess up the shot - its easier to recover the BM.
i have s5 and i am waiting for s5iix ,Amazing cameras ,your test here shows little more soft look for bmpcc and a little more dynamic range on bmpcc 2.03.Did you shot on log profile in lumix?
Yes but that was just the first attempt - not that I am familiar with it I would say it has about 95% of 6kDR so I would doubt anyone can max out either
@@CINENIMUS ok your test was very usefull ans shows how close is lumix with a cinema camera plus autofocus ,stabilizer etc.And i had bmpc original and i think the filmic look of the og is unbeatable even today
I like the vibes 🎶🎵
🕺
I own the bmp6k pro, although it is a good camera I’m looking to get the s5iix, its just a tad more confinient shooting run and gun
In the process of selling mine 6kpro in anticipation of the s5iix...
Im in the same situation. How is the s5iix?
Thats why I ended up moving to sony after all. But I am getting the new full frame blackmagic 6k
@@nathancasey7712 sony best
Cool comparison … which lenses did you use for the S5?
Most of the time cheap nikon 35mm afd and in some cases 24-70 2.8g but also at 35mm (I only use nikon glass at the moment)
Wow! no reason to bother with the inconveniences and the quirks of the BMPCC6K when the S5 is practically able to give the same results.
Yes most cameras these days can make near identical images
Many shots focus was missed for blackmagic 6k
What
@CINENIMUS I think that few shots from bmpcc 6K are out of focus, on few shots it's much sharper than on others. for example on first shoot bmpcc is more sharper than s5. maybe aperture is different. i don't know but on frame where woman sits at the desk definetly is something wrong with focus on the bmpcc. that's all. BTW Great shoots, beautiful frames
Lol that aint the point though aint it
The S5 was shot on inter codec? 4k 422?
Yes of course
Black magic has a green tint, not appealing. Also, it seems the S5 blurred out the background a bit more, is it the same equivalent aperture and same lens?
Exact same but S5 is full frame so not exactly the same
S5 so much better here especially in low light
Full frame man actually the difference between full frame and crop is bigger than crop and mft. In other words crop is actually a lot closer to mft than full frame
I would say the roll off and micro contrast is better on 6k, s5 looks more contrasty
Bullshit
@@CINENIMUS Ha, well just my opinion
Most people watching 1080 or 1440p can't see no diff
Yes
S5II vince the best
I just got the s5ii, noticed severe banding in dark footage, wonder if you encountered the same issue? (I graded in resolve when I saw this)
At what bitrates / iso?
@@CINENIMUS UHD 25p 422 10bit MOV, VLOG, ISO 320
@@gilbert_agius thats your answer 320 iso is not native you should not use anything bellow 650 which is it’s native iso. Otherwise you getting some noice reduction in camera
@@CINENIMUS Oh okay, will try using native next time round, cheers for the reply man!
@@gilbert_agius no problem but just bare in ming panasonic s series cameras all have issues with temporal noise reduction some more some less some fixed with firmware some not its a well documented issue. S1h still has is but S1 is fixed very weird but I saw it on s5 too at any iso just a little better at native
Amazing, where can we download your LUT?
Thanks, never got around to make one, keep changing my mind about the channel name haha and till I do that I cant fire up the website to for downloading assets - will do soon though
@@CINENIMUS Know the feeling lol! But sure, im very impressed that the S5 can match the beautiful BMPCC cameras. Im thinking if the S5 II can match it even closer? Im very close to buying one.
@@PsyformSamples If you know what you doing and dont need the flexibility of raw - s5 and s5ii can beat bmpcc6k easy, full frame is about 3x bigger than that in blackmagic
which lens did you use on the lumix with the fire shots?
35mm f2 nikkor
I can't decide between the S5 and the BMPCC6k, which one would you recommend?
Depends what you need it for. The S5 is a lot easier to live with. 6k is great too, it’s all built into one body so no need for external monitor.
@@CINENIMUS well i mostly do nature documentaries and some cinematic videos like car promotions, sometimes music videos ^^ hard to decide.
@@Jake_203 yeah just get the S5 you wont regret it. There are some chinese / gray market ones for peanuts available. BM raised their prices artificially recently and there is some speculation they will be releasing something new so you might end up with out dated camera
I Have lumix s5iix ,i think it is a better overall camera and the only complain i have is that it is a little sharper than i would prefer .Bm here has a more soft, that i prefer , and thats all.Considering the dynamic range also lumix has according to geraldundone 14 bit (v log) and bm 13 if i am correct .For me DR is critical for a camera.Very nice test by the way
BM has higher DR if you reduce noise like your S5ii internally does
Panasonic S5, BMPCC6k G2 or SONY A7 IV? I'm in a pickle guys! Which one should i get? Video is my priority, photography secondary...Any suggestions? 🎞🎞
They all cost vastly different:
S5 is like £700
A74 £1500
6Kg2 £2300
I think you really need to rethink your list haha
@@CINENIMUS
6kG2 = 1,995$
Sony A7IV = 2,300$ ~
Lumix S5II = 2300$ (w lens)
Seems like they are in same price range, I’m leaning more towards BMP G2.
Also, i just noticed, i think you’re using different versions of BMP and Lumix in this video, no?
@@mostvisuals yep. The p6k original (but they all share same sensor. And S5 is not S5ii.
In that case from your list S5ii is hands down the best choice. But if I was you I would spend the extra 100-200 bucks and get the X version.
If you want to see what I use now head on to my latest video I posted today. But ultimately these days you cannot buy a bad camera they all excellent - only people who operate them that differs.
@@CINENIMUS Thanks for the replies! I will check out the X variant of S5II. I've been a Sony user for a while, so i'm hesitant to switch, but will definitely look into the option you proposed.
@@mostvisuals if you have a sony just keep sony there are no magical cameras haha
Just wondering if it was shot with the VA, what would be the difference!
VA?
@@CINENIMUS Blackmagic Video Asisst which activates its BRAW, Im on the edge of selling my s5 to get the 6k just for braw or just buy the VA assist then use BRAW, would be the difference be huge or what! Theres nothing on the internet!
@@Filmsimulation I had BMPCC6K for over a year - switched to S5 and could not be happier not only the 10bit on S5 is crazy good (for me it has all the latitude I would ever need in a camera)- but the camera operates near silent, battery lasts more than 15mins and is weather sealed and stabilised - and video format is so efficient and LCD is actually usable AND its FULL FRAME, and it now costs half the price if 6K . For me personally 2 x S5 bodies is way better situation than 1 x 6k (with all its problems)
@@CINENIMUS Would you use an external monitor like the blackmagic video assist just to get the 12bit for greater latitude!? thank you for these answers tho! It pushes the sensor to use the 6k too
@@Filmsimulation no. I told you I already have all the latitude anyone would ever want. All the extra theoretical latitude is a marketing gimmick lots of new guys fall for in reality you dont even need 10 stops.
S5 1000 Dolars vs BMP6K 1500 dolars
No. Thats bmpcc6k, they about the same price. You need to learn the difference between bmpcc6k, bmpcc6kp and bmcc6k
P6K win
For you? Nice - get it they super cheap now.
s5 its way more superior tha pocket6k. the pocket6k is way too sharp for my taste it almost looks like a cellphone footage
I think a lot of people would disagree with you especially similar fan boys but then again its all subjective and like I said in the description it was not to compare them like for like
@@CINENIMUS i had the pocket 6k around 2 years and trust me the s5 is way more better. im not a fan of any camara im just a fan of practicality
I dont know what you on about
@Jerimiah Cook: My Journey not sure about that I have both
@Jerimiah Cook: My Journey no need to push hard when you light correctly. You try doing that with actual celluloid film see how “hard” can you push lol
S5 it's way better
This is not to show if either is better or not as I used same lut no designed for panasonic but you prove my point that it doesnt matter no more really - most cameras are great
it seems the s5 has low noise than the p6k on high iso?I have p6k and I prefer the color ,and I want to buy the s5x2 which you prefer?
This video is just to show the differences in sensor technology, they are as great and on near identical level. I admit BM is way easier to operate but Panasonic is a lot easier to travel / live with haha
