  • "The Day Thou Gavest, Lord, Is Ended" was written by Reverend John Ellerton in 1870. The opening line came from an anonymous text in 'Church Poetry' (1843).
The tune is 'St Clement', written by Reverend Clement C. Scholefield in 1874.
It is performed here by the choir of Wells Cathedral.

I can sing hymns perfectly - I have trained my voice to hit the notes I see. I have incredible pitch and when I sing, I can FEEL Everyone in the room their SHOCK that someone is actually singing the song the way it is written. There is magic in Singing - learning to READ the notes inorder to place the voice there IN TIME to RIDE THE PITCH - If I were in that room singing everyone would KNOW IT. It was so difficult in the beginning and through the years their was definite shifts as I became more fine tuned. Music is more real than all of life - and most people almost everyone will never know the profound feeling of singing perfect music - there is tremendous magic in at least STRIVING for perfection - and we can NEVER BE 100% perfect - that is a God thing when it flows like that - there is no greater power than singing in my opinion and I can't give that knowledge away....you can't tell people that it goes so much deeper than the radio or singing by ear.

Beautiful hymn. As a young girl, we use to sing it at St. Matthews Anglican Church, but hadn't heard it for a long time. So fitting for Queen's funeral.

The Anglican Church has lost its way, but when I hear hymns such as this I know eventually our Church will return to the Orthodox, Catholic, and Apostolic faith and tradition.

I'm watching an Alistar Begg sermon (Staying The Course When Others Don't), here on YT and he just referenced this hymn in passing. I'd never heard it so thought I'd take a listen, and yes it is beautiful and reminiscent of the hymns that used to be played and sung in church. A sweet find for me. ✨

This was my favourite hymn long before I discovered it was also Queen Victoria’s favourite. When Father Vic held Evensong in the mid 1980s at Saint Augustine’s , Bethlehem, we always closed with it. I snuffed the altar candles out after the service and can still smell that sweet aroma when I hear this hymn. I believe it was also played when the Union Jack was taken down over Hong Kong for the last time. Clement Cotterill Scholefield was Sir Arthur Sullivan’s (yes THAT Sir Arthur) parish priest, and while Scholefield is credited with it, it is rumoured that Sir Arthur lent a helping hand. ♥️🎶😇

@@ChetValleyChurchesthe greatest horror of faith is its corruption by people to their own goals, but hymnals and choir, i feel are the truest expression of faith and divine beauty to be conjured by manking, a piece of heaven on earth, if just for a few verses
