Excellent rant. One of those rare occasions where someone is irate but 100% factual in everything he said.
Always liked Twellman, were it not for the concussions I thought he was the next McBride.
@Michael Takahashi this is true america hasnt been good since fitness became secondary to tactics and a well structured team
@Michael Takahashi thats what britain was saying for 200 years. howd that turn out?
@Michael Takahashi I think he means that USMNT will qualify for the 2218 World Cup
The long term fix is to cut pay to play, if the US wants a short term fix is that they should have open tryouts to the mnst every year from ages as low as 15 and up.see if they can find a diamond in the ruff, and go from there.
“Iceland is the same size of Corpus Cristy, Texas. Or Anaheim California” my favorite quote from the rant
And Iceland needs to qualify in the cut-throat UEFA region, which is much harder. Relatively fewer countries from UEFA can go to the world cup (relative to the quality of many European countries), so there are just a few places available for the smaller countries.
@@janickpauwels3792 thats the point. The US for some reason in the last world cup qualifier just did not perform well whatsoever. And yet in 2017, there was a surge in soccer changes. And yet they couldn’t beat a Trinidad team that had nothing to play for. Meanwhile Iceland has to fight and claw in order to make it to Euro 2016 and they go all the way to the quarterfinals after BEATING ENGLAND. And then theyre able to qualify for Russia.

You should still be ranting, because not much has changed.
David Bergner 8 months later, nothing has changed. US Soccer is just a cash cow for businesses and millionaires. they don’t give a shit about soccer. If we get someone in charge that’s passionate about soccer then we’ll see a difference.
We are sending our players to Europe
After watching the result from the Wales game today, I am pensive, but I can say we are moving in the right direction. We have a ton of promising talent, hopefully this can become our first golden generation of many to come. There are many structural issues still with USA Soccer, but on the players front, we have a lot to be positive about moving forward.

That was from the gut bro. This is how south Americans feel about fútbol. It comes from the gut and the soul. That is lacking in the US. Guys are athletic, strong, fast but they need to be hungry and proud to tears of representing American culture playing other countries. Also need more players developing in Europe or South America where fútbol is religion.
Biggest thing and Hope Solo said it. As it stands now soccer aka football is a rich white kids game. That is a fact. My daughter as was I growing up and playing is an anomaly in elite American soccer.

Twellman's rant was 100% what we all needed to hear. Why he isn't in a position of high authority within the USSF is beyond me because I swear he is the only guy with any sense of how stuck and broken the U.S men's team is.
Twellman as president would be the epitome of Pay to Play lol. Making the guy who golfs 36 holes and vacations at the hamptons wouldn’t relate much to a hungry kid born to poverty.
@@Michelle-ez9hs he hates pay to play though
I don’t think the USMNT was or is broken, remember the only countries to not miss a single World Cup since 1990 are Brazil and Germany, literally every other side has missed at least one. And we’ve been consistently ranked in the top 25 in the FIFA World Rankings and that’s not that bad.
Taylor Twellman should be a board member for the USSF.
With Brian McBride
He shoulda got more tick as a player too
Josiah Jindrich had he not gotten a career ending concussion, that would be the case.
No, he should be president
That would just further ensure the pay to play system lol. A 5 foot manlet who plays golf and vacations at the hamptons? Doesn’t get more privileged than that.
How can you not love this guy? :D
He's an asshole for disrespecting Trinidad. Even though his team is the favorite to win, USA Didn't perform. I get part of his criticism but don't LIKE HOW he says "we can't beat Trinidad" as if no one can have a good day in football. He just vex that results went against them because no one expected the other results to go how it went.
Come back in 10 years and consider the lack of development our youth had cause of "no heading" he helped push......
@@adamsamuel8593 What made Taylor, as well as many others USMNT fans, so pissed off is not the loss to Trinidad itself (one bad game can always happen, expecially in football/soccer), but the fact that, going into the final game, the USMNT found themselves in such a position in the table in the first place. Being so poor against CONCACAF opponents is out of everybody's mind because, you know, apart from Mexico and Costa Rica, they're... well... not the best.
In his rant, he pointed out that being eliminated in CONCACAF is just unacceptable, expecially for a country with size, money, resources and population as the United States of America.
Losing to Mexico is fair enough, they're just a better team. Losing to Costa Rica shouldn't be so (it's so much smaller than the US that US Soccer should easily develop better players than the Ticos out of 300+ million people), but it's still acceptable because the Costaricans have been a very very good side in recent years, too (made the World-Cup quarterfinals in 2014), well coached and with a big football/soccer culture. So, even though USA should do better, it's still ok to lose to them.
But losing to Honduras, Panama, Trinidad, Guatamala (yes, the US lost at Guatemala in the semifinal round of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers)... Come on! "What are we doing?"
Not only those aren't good teams overall (I don't want to be disrespectful, but that's fact, not opinion: just look at the FIFA World Ranking), but it's ridiculous that with all the money and resources the US have (I repeat, 300+ million people against teams from much smaller countries) they cannot figure out how to qualify for the World Cup in such a weak confederation as CONCACAF.
This is was Taylor Twellman basically pointed out in his rant, and these are all objective facts. I can't see how he was disrespectful towards anybody, he just said the truth.
I loved him when he played for New England, still love him now. I met him here in Carson, when the US played a concacaf team. super nice. If these guys can't figure it out, I'd give Taylor a chance!
Raffaele Di Filippo I don’t love that guy.
This rant should’ve been awarded an Oscar or Emmy!! You can see the passion and frustration in the man eyes
Get rid of pay to play, and add relegation/promotion... we could have at least 4 divisions... look at how many teams compete in the U.S. Open Cup.
Divisional football is the way to go
People who want pro/rel now in US Soccer don't have a clue how the economics of soccer in America work. Very few teams outside MLS are financially sound enough to survive either promotion or relegation. For the majority of teams in all divisions relegation would mean almost certain death. The average soccer fan today wouldn't be interested in their team dropping division.
@@albertomolina3264 I agree with you, that USA soccer is economically unique, kind of to the point that I dont think a Pro/Rel would have created the sort of growth it's seeing today.
But at the same time its the same as the English system, where there are what like 11-13 professional tiers, where only like the top 5 tiers have stability? Even then clubs in like 4th tier still go bankrupt and are constantly changing ownership, have sub-par grounds and attendance.
Look up the recent story of Salford City FC = bought out, and now a bunch of former players turned investors/owners are turning it from bankrupt to an outside contender to raise a 4th tier in 5 years.
That's the point of pro/rel = teams/cities/towns ebb and flow live by the sword and die by the sword. It's very American = capitalism at its finest. On the opposite side your point is well made because look at Serie A, a history of sub par owners making poor financial decisions and crashing out of the league. But eventually, the cream rises to the top and those with money and passion to be owners and create a winning culture = they invest, capitalize in the market, and no one can overtake them.
I agree probably for a developing sport in America, there isnt big enough fan bases to really support this. That economically the growth of the sport is just on this consistent plugging along and stability (or that's what it seems they're trying for). . .but . . . Ultimately the promotion relegation system provides many more players chances to compete in meaningful ways at a broader range of age and skill and that kind of competition is what refines players to be better. Versus what we have now - non-affiliated academies, amateur sports, NCAA, etc.
Someone has to pay the coaches and for the fields. Its not a set up thing its a culutre.
Funny thing is that’s what we are doing in the mls now
The U.S. needs to reform their system, especially their soccer pyramid. They're struggling to beat Caribbean countries nowadays because their youth development has stagnated.
Thank you. American youth soccer and academy soccer is a joke!
It's already improving. People forget the lagging factor.
And it's funny because Caribbean countries honestly love baseball and boxing more than soccer. And we are beating an elite country
I understand why it isn't, but if the US ever wants to win a WC, they need to reform not just their system, but everything
Which is absolutely beyond unbelievable because this is the same culture that uses the phrase "soccer mom" as a friggin' byword for a woman with kids in the suburbs. Every white kid plays soccer. Every Hispanic kid plays soccer. Quite a few Asian and black and Native American and every other race and color and creed of kids in this country play soccer too.
And yet we can't find the genesis of 11 grown men who can win a World Cup qualifier when it matters. It's shameful. No point in even playing the international game. Just let those kids pick up a baseball bat or a football helmet or a hockey stick or a basketball.
USA needs this dude if they have any hope with making soccer bigger. He seems to be the only true passionate American analyst for the sport. His game commentary is on point as well.
He's always been my favorite American fútbol pundant and commentator.
One of the greatest sports rants of all time as far as I'm concerned. Nothing Twellman said was out of line or incorrect. This rant was the start of much needed change for the USMNT.
Michael Bradley Jozey Altidore and Omar Gonzalez should have retired fro international soccer after failing to qualify for the 2018 WC.

I wouldn’t say USSoccer is any smarter in how they deal with the Women’s team. In fact I’d say they treat them worse. The USWNT succeeds often times in spite of USSoccer certainly not because of USSoccer. Just so it’s clear “USSoccer” is the body that governs the national soccer teams in the US.
@@MiladyToxici forgot the US womens world cup that no oe remembers or cares about lol. Its not as elite as mens soccer thats a fact . Idk why even mention it no other country mentions the females world cup. Probably because everyone knows its not the elite cup. The mens soccer tournaments are better. Hence argentina and brazil would humilate any womens world cup winner. I honestly wish men and womens socfer team would play each other alot more itll shut up the people
USA cannot continue doing soccer the American way, stop pampering players in college, need to expand Academies and have MLS cover those costs, they already make enough money in sponsors and tv rights, and please, please, stop pay for play, this methods only allows kids with money to play at the decent-level academies around the country, leaving sometimes the talented kids behind because their families cannot afford the costs, sometimes of up to 20-30k a year.
It will never happen, unfortunately. The people who run these organizations are too greedy to see any of that. And it's not just soccer either.
agree with alot of it, Goes without saying, our players in euro and south American leagues and at home, , MLS alot more competitive, and MLS on a European schedule, no more hot summer shit, I feel for the players as I sweat, also don't want to hear it can't compete with fall sports, they don't have 10 or 20🏆🏆🏆, and a champions league, ✌
Stop pay for play leagues at the youth level in the United States. There should actually be a willingness on those passionate about soccer to actually subsidize youth development programmes and leagues.
I cannot name one, NOT ONE, player in the English football leagues who went to college to play a sport. About 90 teams in the four professional football leagues, so about 2000 professional football players who all learnt their trade at their schools, in the park, on the street, in after-school clubs, Saturday and Sunday leagues and in the professional football clubs’ academies and scouting programmes. None of these things tend to cost the players anything and in the beginning none of the players ever do it for the money. By the time they realise they can make millions they’ve either already got the skills to cash in on that promise or they’re too rubbish to be given the opportunity.
someone needs to make "What are we doing?" tshirts with taylors face on it!
After the Mexico disaster, I am also asking "what the hell are we doing?"
Nothing....ussoccer don't give a fuck about the fans. Fans are not showing up and soon our European based players won't except any more call ups as they will realize there is no point. We will be stuck with MLS trash for good.

The same is being said about el tri in Mexico. You guys are in the same boat. The completion has gotten better around them that both teams have hit a ceiling and it's actually hurting them staying in the concacaf.

USA's BACK! THE USMNT IS BACK IN THE FIFA WORLD CUP STAGE! Thank You Taylor for the rant that changed the USMNT.
Since Taylor Twellman's famous rant, the USMNT has two CONCACAF Nations League titles, a CONCACAF Gold Cup, a R16 finish in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Not too shabby so far.
Taylor hit the nail on the head here. It's an organizational failure. We have players to compete in the World Cup. There's no reason USMNT should fail to leave the group stages at every single World Cup (baring injuries or a crazy hard group). It's the same formulaic problem that has haunted sports teams like Cleveland Browns. How do you have #1 draft picks and in the top 10 of the draft every single year but fail to win a single game? Organization. Major changes (still) needed at US Soccer.
jab452 til last season when the Browns shown improvement 7-8-1 now its the Washington Redskins
MLS and the pay to play system dont care about the USMNT. Its my only conclusion.
Klinnsman was right about everything
That's not correct about the USMNT failing to get past the group stage in every World Cup. Up until the failure to qualify for 2018, the USMNT had advanced past group play in 3 of the last 4, making it to the QF in '02, and Round of 16 in 2010 & 2014. But that's pretty much moot now with the entire thing in shambles
That was a horrible day. My fucking dad went into the hospital and I was so worried about that I forgot about the game until it was already 2-0. When I got home I turned the TV on and saw this magic and I gotta say it did make me feel a little better to see someone close to US Soccer was as frustrated as I was. I’ve always had respect for Taylor and his honesty. He never sugar coats shit.

that game woke up US Soccer for sure. it marked the end of the landon donovan/clint dempsey/tim howard era and brought up the kids. NOTHING HAS CHANGED!
My son has played travel soccer for the last 9 years. Coaching and player development is just abmisal. It is about the money and nothing else.
That's the problem with American sports in general- basketball, baseball, soccer. It's ridiculous that kids and their parents have to pony up more money for summer and travel leagues. All in the name of college recruitment. Colleges love it because they might go recruit a couple kids, and the big schools with their TV deals and everything else will make millions off one kid, like Duke did with Zion. When America is saying its best pool of players are only those who can afford to do summer and travel ball, then we are doing a massive disservice to our kids. I like the academy idea, but would US Soccer and everyone else be willing to do a ground up rebuild? No one knows, but it has to get done.

I argue that had the USMNT qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, Bruce Arena would've picked older players instead of youth and be bounced out of the group stages in a European soil FIFA World Cup again.
The loss to Trinidad and Tobago and not qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup turned out the best things for the USMNT to revamp their squads with youth and in 2021, they won two titles outlasting bitter rivals Mexico.

taylor mentioned the biggest issue there, pay to play. here in england, we pay subs but its very affordable and they don’t chase us up if we dont pay them. we don’t really pay for our kits. thats the biggest issue in us football
easy to rant. hard to fix. pay to play is part of the problem as well as top down approaches that neglects the talent that is out there - as well as destroys play with and emphasis on physical and speed based soccer.
Bruh the us ain’t it, it has never been it. The country as a whole has an inflated ego. It’s making strides to become better through the emergence of academies and semi-professional leagues but it’s nowhere close. Until the usl leage 1 gets established, and semi-pro leagues start paying players there will be a lot of talent that just goes unnoticed. On top of that you have to consider the fact that usl league 2 and the npsl’s semi-pro leagues are summer leagues, the problem with that is that with those being the highest level semi-pro no-one outside of college and academy players really get looked at, or have their needs met. If the US really wanted to be competitive they would put the college teams in the NPSL and or USL league 2 year round (or fall and spring) like in Europe. This way you have a much bigger talent pool to choose from and you’re not excluding ex-collegiate players that still play at a high level and actually want to go pro. And if the is federation approved this there would be a much higher attraction to the sport as a whole.
i also think it starts at the young club levels too. Its a business not a sport for the owners and its a cash cow. its sad cause i bet the US can be really good at it but sports are now looked at as a business. I hear the same argument about the basketball programs here now too. money ruins everything smh
With all due respect of someone who follows football and supports MLS we can't be fooled thinking that a league that has no promoting and descending system can be considered a top competitive league in the world.
There is no way college kids can become world class players in enough quantity to form consecutive winning teams.
The secondary leagues will force teams to pickup players and form a base for the future.
That's the problem...MLS clubs and players have no concept of battling all season not only for the win but also for not loose.
Loosing has consequences and not everyone takes a medal home.
We can't even beat the Central America clubs for the club World Cup finals every December in Japan and this year I believe in Saudi Arabia.
American coach such as Bruce Arena is not a world class coach, they are all outdated and whoever is deciding the future of the USA football has no knowledge on how to create a winning league.

USSF made their bed with MLS and SUM. I won’t be coming back until real changes are made. What’s crazy is that even after this embarrassment USSF still doesn’t get it.
Oh they get it, but what they (USSF, MLS and SUM) understand is that no matter what, their coffers are still getting filled with $$$$$. And that's what only matters to them.
