Right on. I am in the trenches, as a youth coach, and I can tell you the youth soccer federation does a terrible job. They direct us to just let the kids run and play, so I get slack for coaching skills, situational awareness, and off-the-ball movement. And worse, our pay-to-play system makes sure we lose tons of really talented girls that can’t afford 2k a year to get into travel teams, which means they don’t make it in their high school teams, and colleges. We are doomed…

Us womens soccer is dominant in WC & Olympics because they are a 1st world Nation with unlimoted resources and the youth structure and college has been in place for player development. Unfortunately a lot of teams have bypassed the USA team.
When the giants of world club football started to invest in their women’s teams, with the best training and coaching facilities in the world, unfortunately the US teams cannot compete with them.
No player from any country who plays in the WSL made it into the quarter finals. Most play in Europe.
When Spain win the World Cup without 10 first team players, and are the U21 and U17 champions too, with Barcelona and Real Madrid behind them, the US cannot compete with them.

Not having solid back line forcing Ertz to play CB instead of 6 or 8? Those are just the issues most discussed, but plenty others?
And Rapinoe shouldn’t have been on team, clearly couldn’t even run or deliver a good corner or pass to Alex Morgan v Portugal. And of course the PK 😢!! Did coach not want backlash for not picking her?

Dan and Taylor here emphasized that this USWNT is polarizing. Absolutely true! The thing is, if they would show at least some class, honor, and respect for others, their support would increase dramatically. Just look at this WC, they barely squeak into the round of 16 and you see them celebrating, taking selfies with fans, etc. Why? Show some humility. Rapinoe wildly misses her PK and she smiles, which even if she didn't mean it to mean that she didn't care, it came off as so. In an earlier comment I noted their behavior in 2019 when they played Thailand with their excessive and obnoxious goal celebrations. How hard is it to simply show some reasonable decorum?
It would be one thing if they were off-putting off the field, but then to maintain a professional manner and execute well on the field. However, to be obnoxious both on AND off the field, well, don't be surprised if people want to see you knocked of your pedestal.

    • @marsrii4372
      @marsrii4372 Год назад +3

I know it’s popular to make the connection between social activism and the poor performance of the players because it fits a certain ideology. However, even though that might be a minor factor, the bulk of the reason of the poor performance is the age of the players, and that the linear, strength and speed approach of US soccer is simply not good enough anymore. In Europe and other nations, football is the main sport and those women benefit from it. Portugal and Spain run circles around our players with finesse. Let’s put the blame were it belongs: the US soccer federation for lousy player (and coaches) selection and development. Half of the team needs to retire NOW!

The USWNT (and any team or individual playing under the flag of the USA) should at a bare minimum have love and respect for the country they are playing for. This team (aside from two or three of them) seemed more interested in their own individual glory than in representing the USA. A couple players have openly stated they don't love the country or respect the freedom they enjoy. How can we expect a team like the one we just watched show any heart or passion on the pitch when they are indifferent to their country at best and openly despise it at worst? MR was a cancer to this team, her retiring is a start to changing that dynamic, but her followers still there need to be removed as well. There also needs to be a change at coach/manager. Andonovski is weak and is a poor tactician and should have already been fired. In 3 games as a substitute she displayed that she is a washed up 38 year old player. That missed penalty kick was not the first time she missed an easy scoring opportunity. Thank G-d it's her last. The sick joke is the fact that she was a member of the USWNT in this 2023 WWC.

All Ill say about Megan is she shouldn’t have been on squad.
Despite all the problems they should still be in Quarterfinals! Instead of losing by 1-2 millimeters, which you could say is poetic justice because an inch to left and Portugal takes them out in group play.
I’m hoping the new coach, who they should be working on hiring right now understands how to use each players strengths for the team.

The world has caught up...but the USWNT allowed one goal in four games, none of which they lost. On the defensive side of the ball, in any case, they're still one of the very best. The problem was goal scoring, and a whole bunch of that is on teh coaching staff (playing people out of position, inflexibility, not making timely substitutions, etc.).
Twellman's spot on about the youth teams and player development in general. Contrast what we do with Japan, whose very young team has been unquestionably the best team in the tournament so far. Their coach has been with many of these players for years (Ikeda coached U17 and U20 sides, winning a U20 World Cup along the way). Their team plays with the energy of young players, but the savvy and football IQ of veterans.

It's interesting. The England women's team often give the knee before kick-off and they're also vocal about inequalities. But they don't seem to get any of this shit. I think one difference is they treat that stuff as entirely secondary to going out and playing for England. To them it's a privilege to put on an England shirt. When they make mistakes they openly admit it; when they're successful they may celebrate the Hell out of it, but they aren't arrogant.
As for the overall sea-change change in women's football globally. Anyone who watched the 2022 Euro's would have already been fully aware of this. The England/Germany final literally sold out Wembley to a record level.

Their performance in the Nigeria game definitely wasn't great, but they tactically held off any chance at Nigeria scoring after being down to 10 players and losing their start striker, and then precision delivered the penalties when needed (unlike the men frequently).

    1) Re USA & Vlatko:
I'm convinced he sabotaged the team. He never looks/ed worried or concerned. It was O'Hara not him, talking to the team after Portugal. He sounds/seems like such a dud.
In the Olympics he used substitutions as if he promised every player that they would each see the pitch before they left Tokyo: taking off players who weren't even sweating yet, players who did well etc, and so often. I was so confused.
NOW in the World Cup, it's like he forgot he brought more than 11 players. On what planet do you take off Alex Morgan (who didnt look tired) before penalties? I dont think she would've blown the penalties. If you want Pinoe on, you put her on in addition to Morgan, not instead of. If you're going to bring on Mewis & O'Hara, at least give them 20 mins. He was NOT trying to win this competition. HE does not have the mentality of "win everything"/ "every match is a must win match", that is the DNA of USWNT.
    Vlatko OUT!!!
    Harvey or Hayes in
    2) Gutted for Nigeria, England was not the better side. Penalties suck.

There is nothing wrong with prioritizing athleticism in the women's game more than in the men's game because women can't cover the field as well as the men leaving space for athletic players to exploit. In the men's game passes need to be inch perfect and first touches need to appear as if cleats are coated in superglue, not so the women. The problem with our team was that a) our athletically superior players got old and lost some of that edge and b) we tried to play pretty. The only game we looked good in was the last one where there was a lot of long balls, pressure and winning second balls. It is no use trying to play tactical Euroball because we don't have the coaches for it here in the USA and the only Europeans we can afford are those that could not hack it in their own country.
