- My Jeep JL Wrangler I call Newb Sock is getting closer to being done, but the to-do list is still too long. Today I'm putting the Rock Jock high steer knuckles on, assembling the front axle and doing a little custom work to get it just right.

lol the Dave's welding glasses story and the laugh at the end was gold.
Crenellations is what you were looking for! The castle nuts have crenellations to catch the cotter pin!
Or if you were just talking about the high points, merlons. Low points are crenels. Merlons + crenels = crenelations.
I was just about to say crenellations, but you beat me to it.
@@johnfitzgerald5158 or since we are talking about mechanics instead of architecture, it is a crenellated nut.
@@darrinrebagliati5365 i guess better than bumpy nuts...lol.
@@johnfitzgerald5158 most guys call em castle nuts!
Hey Fred. I’m really digging your channel. I liked DED but I always wished for longer technical segments. These 15-40 minute episodes are awesome. Cheers!
It was a sad day when about a year ago I needed glasses to see whilst welding. 😢
Anvils are made of iron because dropping an aluminium anvil on Wile E. Coyote would have been far less entertaining.
Hey Fred knuckles predates low fives. It's an old boxing tradition because you can't shake hands with boxing gloves on.
That nylon ring on the axle to align it with the inner splines is brilliant ! Hope the guy that came up with it ain't one of the Engineers that I've cursed soundly in the past for BAD ideas ! Give Clampy some love , one of my favorite 4x4's ever..........
Dang I'm the first one. Keep up the good work. Aluminum will not hold up. Dana tried the aluminum carriers and the were junk.
Dude watching this video was like therapy for me
Hi Fred, great fleet of 4x4's, the summer camp jeep it's my favorite one, classic look and modern high performance!
Great stuff, as always!
I enjoy that this video went from "Here's how you use a cotter pin" to "So then we just cut this stuff off the axle" real quick.
Informative, interesting & "knuckling fun" also. The nuance of all the modifications & assembly, by a guy that smiles, laughs and tells stories - Fred could be on a fabrication talk show. Regardless, good luck with the assembly & have an enjoyable time with friends and others on your upcoming outdoor venture & ride.
Wow man the jeep is going great well done.
Great video!
Fred if you ever decide to start telling stories for RUclips channels I would subscribe! You're always so entertaining with your stories..
Aluminum comes from Dirt. Iron comes from Rocks. So Yeah!
I believe the diff cover has two fill plugs for different pinion types. High pinion uses the upper plug, low pinion uses the lower. I have Dana 44 covers from Dana and they have the same setup.
bumping knuckles been around a long time, used to be called "giving DAP"
Hey Fred, Always enjoy your videos. Just a small suggestion. You need a lapel micro phone on. When you turn away from the camera, it gets harder to hear you speak. Just a suggestion. Keep up the great videos.
As far as I know, the part of the castle that the castle nut emulates is called a parapet. I'm sure there will be some castle buff or keyboard warrior to correct me though. As one does.
Welding aluminum on the trail vs welding steel on the trail.
I have to admit that this is the first time Ive seen Fred with a torque wrench. Could be I have missed it. I thought torque was figured in ugga duggas??? Will be looking to learn about this new dangled tool!
Hey Fred, I enjoyed the "fist bump" story! Myself, I like the good Ol' firm handshake. I tend to better understand what kind of man or woman, from the handshake - what you say Fred?
Gladly you told the jeep guys this
are the hole diameters for the Drag Link and Tie Rod on the Rock Jock Knuckles the same as the Stock Jeep Knuckles?
I'm asking because Rock Jock website says the Knuckles are designed to be used with the Rock Jock CurrectLync system and may or may not be used by other, they have not tested it on any other manufacturers equipment. I don't know why it wouldn't work but asking to be sure before I order them.
It was only knukle heads and knuckle dragging when I was young. I think aluminum strength is more about which alloy it is rather than plain aluminum. 2024 is not as strong as 7075. If the can make a metal smasher work on an industrial scale a meter square plate of 7075 that has gone through that process could withstand the weight of an aircraft carrier. Probably not happening on an industrial scale in my lifetime.
Have this axel. You'll be replacing those ball joints WAY sooner than you think. Got less than 3 oil changes out of mine.
I love the content of your videos! However I probably sound like a broken record, shouldn’t you have a face shield on while you use the grinder or cutting wheel?
Waiting for the first amateur engineer to say that clicking your torque wrench twice is giving you incorrect torque.
Forged not casted too, cast iron sucks for anything but a firebox
Grew up in SoCal, hi-five was the thing until the 90s-ish. Even then, didn't replace the tried and true hi-five until 10-ish (?) years ago?
Hey Fred do you think a nutzert would work on the bracket that would be difficult to get to a nut in there ?
cant wit to see this Jeep in. action!!!!
Fred, you've got great content and I enjoy your story telling. 2 small things. Don't get into the weeds with explaining things and get a lapel mic. I look forward to your next video.
Aluminum is ok so long as its forged, and made of the right aluminum. Has less un-sprung weight, just like aluminum wheels....made from the right aluminum.
Castellated nut is the proper name.
some thing to agjust camber is a good thing
It’s funny, but Finnegan and Freiburger, Tony and Lucky, and now you and Dave are wearing glasses. I wear contacts, just because it’s easier for wearing sunglasses.
They are wearing magnifiers to see close up. Something that becomes necessary when getting old. Thing is they destroy distance sight. Having them as contacts would be less than ideal.
Have you ever considered running portals on one of your jeeps. I only ask because I've always found them interesting, but I don't see a lot of people running with them.
The alumi knuckles fail all the time on the JL axles.
This Fist Bump or Knuckles was made popular by Howie Mandel on the breif case game show Deal Or No Deal because he was a germaphobe and wouldn't shake anyone's hands. Now it is awkward to shake someone's hand.
Man-rule #42: You *must* click tongs together exactly *three* times every time you pick them up.
Hey Fred I'm curious how come you're not using backing plates on those rotors they look very much exposed
I thought the same thing
They just hold debris against the rotor and are pretty much pointless on a dedicated trail/rock rig.
@@D3thM3tal yeah I thought that too but I also heard him say it's not a dedicated trail rig he wants to drive it also. But I was kind of hoping on his reason for it not someone's thoughts of why he did it
I always did chest bumps
Those factory aluminum knuckles are absolute junk. Countless pictures of them broken online. Good call going to an aftermarket version.
I guess I’m really old, we shook hands….
Ramparts.
You said the company that you got the skid plates from offer them in aluminum. A jeep with crazy wobble? Say it ain't so.
no the company I got the skid plates from, Metal Cloak only offers steel, another company, Artec, offers them in Aluminum.
Why not move the tie rod to where it is over instead of under
it would probably crash into the frame at full compression
Never back off a castle nut to get the cotter pin hole to line up! Always go slightly tighter if you have to so that you can insert the cotter pin. :)
The only time you loosen a castle nut to get a cotter pin lined up is for a wheel bearing. If you tighten a wheel bearing too much it won't last very long!
Darn metric system… someone needs to make a torque wrench that has both… or better yet companies make the instructions with ftlbs
I have several torque wrenches with both on them. Shame on Fred for going metric...
Had to cringe....death wheel and no guard. Seriously guys had a guy die at a factory here in IA when one exploded and embedded in his neck.
First
Knuckles was because of the movie big hero 6
Fred, ya gotta stop saying "beefcake" so much...
Once may be OK, anymore than that it just starts getting weird
Plus, say that around Dave and I'm pretty sure he'll punch you!
😠😡🤬 unit bearings!
Noob
OK HOLD IT JUST A MINUTE !!!!! I THOT THE NEWB/NOOB ? WAS SUPPOSE 2 B A " GROWN/ADULT " JEEP !!!!! ?? NOW ITS GOING ON THE NASTY CRAZY U.A ?????? BRO, U GOT THRASHERS 4 THAT STUFF Y THE NOOB !!!! A NICE CLEAN GO GET SOME GIRLS KINDA JEEP WHAT A COOL IDEA BUT I GES THATS OUT THE DOOR NOW !!
it can be a pretty clean jeep and go on UA, just wait and see.
You seriously need to explain cottor pins? To long
Text me on telegram scammers pretending to be someone there not. no one used telegram report anyone in comments that has that added to there name .
Why isn't the bottom balljoint in a fixed position like the top,all the knuckle is doing is rotating back and forth
