I have had a problem with my sister's 2016 crv burning oil. She bought the car new and I've done her oil changes religiously and noticed around the 30-40k mark it started to burn oil. Now after an oil change and driving about 2k miles I needed to add a Q. We took it to 2 different Honda dealers to have consumption tests done and both times they've said that the consumption is within normal range and it's up to the owner to check the oil regularly and add oil when needed. If we went off the maintenance minder the car would be bone dry by the time it hits 0%. Just this week we had to have the valve cover gasket replaced because of an oil leak at the gasket and I'm going to be replacing the pcv valve this weekend. Hopefully that will make a difference but based on this video I'm not hopeful. Thank you for the content and letting me know that I'm not crazy.
Switch to a 5w30 oil it will help .I never used the 5w20 and my crv never burned oil using 5w30 .my friend had the same issue with his 2016 and was using 5w20.i told him switch it to 5w30 and you won't have the issue he did and no issues .it's an older engine more miles put a little thicker oil .problem solved
@@RBTheMechanic Yah that’s what I did I switched from. Super tech 5w20 (warren distributor) to havoline synthetic blend high mileage 5w20 And changed PVC valve. That reduced the oil consumption by 50% for me. It’s been holding up that way for 2 years now. 2007 Honda Odyssey with 228k miles.
It depends whether you have a 4 cyl or a 6 cyl Variable cylinder management engine. I owned a 2004 Acura TSX 4 cylinder engine which was identical to Honda Accord 4 cyl. I changed the PCV valve and oil consumption was reduced substantially. The 6 cylinder burns oil for reasons other than the PCV valve. The main the reason is that when 3 cylinders are shut off, the intake and exhaust valves are closed but the piston still moves up and down. This creates suction which pulls oil up above the piston and fowls up the spark plugs and the excess oil is burned.
I really love Honda. I’ve had a 98 accord(1st car), 2003 accord, 2004 Saturn Vue (which was made with the Honda engines until 2007), 2008 & 2009 accord, and a 2013 Acura Tl (3.7).. they all burn/burned oil except the 98 accord and the Saturn. I can’t even buy a used Honda with a good engine. This is sad. I’ve bought them all straight out. No payments and I’m stuck looking stupid trying to stick with the brand I really love. They should fix all oil burning issues no matter how old it is as long as it’s not like 180,000 miles. I’m really thinking about switching to Lexus or Infiniti at this point. I should not have bought this many cars over the last 7 years . I should still have just the 1 which is supposed to have been reliable. The only reason I don’t have my 98 accord and my Saturn is because someone hit and run me in the accord and the Saturn subframe was rusted underneath. Honda if you’re listening, you guys are gonna lose a lot of customers.
I have a 2004 Acura TSX my oil lights keep flashing I’ve just recently did a oil change and cleaned out VTEC solenoid and now I’m having this problem never had this problem until I change the oil and cleaned out VTEC solenoids. Also, I change spark plugs. I don’t know what’s to do please anybody give me advice.
Same here with a 2015 Accord EX-L changed the PCV valve even after testing and concluded that it was functioning properly and not defective twice and multiple oil changes there is still a oil consumption of very noticeable proportion. Thank you for your time dedicated to this and your correct Honda needs take ownership of there mistakes
I have a Honda 2015 EX. With high mileage/week, there is high burning. A mechanic offered a $100 cleaning flush before an oil change to clean out the cylinders but I think it is excessive just to prevent oil burn.
Believe me they won’t they did the same thing with the notorious transmission’s failure on the 5th and 6th generation accords especially the 3.0 V6 some failed at 60-85,000 K miles I got lucky my 2000 accord 3.0 V6 special edition tranny failed at 249,643K miles and the engine was still running top notch even though transmission failed Honda also did the same thing with stupid VCM system I don’t know who the hell is running Honda nowadays but they fucking up a lot lately
Run 5W-30, contrary to popular belief the engine is specified for it. CAFE standards prevent them from putting higher viscosity oils in the manual in the US. In the UK the manuals give 0W30 and 5W30 as optional
I have a 09 TSX and the damn thing doesn't even warn you when you leave the key in the ignition and the door is open. Lol my 1994 Prelude had a lil chime when I left the key in the cylinder. Fkn do you know how many times I've locked the doors with the keys inside? Idk wtf is going on with Honda/Acura anymore. I love them. But for fucks sake. No oil warning or failsafe in place. Engine should shut off when it's 2 quarts or more low or go into limp mode to get you to put oil in it. Heck maybe even a oil level display inside. Mine has a oil life % display, but doesn't even warn when low on oil. I mean what is going on. 🤣😂
@@sadie3717 awesome! I have a 2009 Acura TSX 2.4L. Me personally I haven't had any crazy issues. But there was a service bulletin and a recall for engines for mine. It does have a oil light, but I've never seen it turn on, other than when I turn the car on initially. Glad to hear they fixed the issue. Definitely helpful to have those warnings pop up!
What you described in the video is all I have been going through and Honda dealership will just keep you running in circles. There's a bigger issue with these engines (earth dreams version) then just the PCV wall nonsense. Let me know if anyone has a solution to this problem.
Try Mystery Marvel Oil. A lot of newer models are having issue with oil build up on the oil ring. I bought my 2011 MDX 3 years ago with 138,000 miles. Noticed shortly after it was using oil @ a rate of 1Qt per 1000 miles. Yikes! Discovered this was a common problem for this generation but made some attempts to solve the issue. Changed pcv valve, nothing, used seafoam in the crankcase and gas, nothing. So I gave up for awhile till I was adding a Qt every third fill up or 600 miles. Hitting the web again I ran across Marvel Mystery Oil. Sounds interesting but still sceptical since seafoam didn’t phase it any. But the more I read about it and many old school mechanics swore by it, won’t hurt to try it. I was down a Quart at 5he time so I put a quart in crankcase and 8 Oz in the tank on each fill. And ran it for the last 1000 miles of my oil change. After that one time incident I am now at 3000 miles per Qt. I will definitely be treating my oil again with Marvel Mystery Oil and see if we get to no adding between oil changes. I am totally amazed. This stuff works
My son's 2009 v6 Accord was consuming 1qt/200 miles. The dealer had installed new software to no avail. I pulled the pcv. It had never been replaced in 130,000 miles I replaced the pcv, 1200 miles/qt!
I'm glad I found your video on an Acura blog. My story starts with a 2010 Acura TL sh awd 6-speed manual transmission. I did my research on these cars and heard there was a recall for oil consumption and this was a one owner car and I called to check on the recall and they said it was out of warranty. Because the car was such a rare car at the time with not a lot of mileage and being a one older car I ended up buying it because it was such a good price and that's when I noticed that it burns a huge amount of oil. I've been looking on RUclips for a long time trying to figure out ways to do it without having to have major engine service done to it but because I'm going to keep the car since they don't make manual transmissions anymore I just religiously checked the oil now and it still Burns a lot of oil. Now that I've gone into comments and seen your video now I know it's not just me. I happen to love this car because I was searching for it for for such a long time and I also have a 2003 Acura CL 6 Speed and a 2011 Acura TL sh awd
I have a 2013 Honda ex-L with 158,360 miles on it. The problem is the VCM that cuts on and off, that’s the cause of the oil consumption and weird shifting and sounds. It also causes problems to the motor mounts. Mines was going through fast oil changes and weird shifting for a while but no leaks and oil is always at correct level. I did some research and found out the problem is THE VCM UNIT. So I brought a S-VCM unit to cut it off, now my car runs smooth on all 6 cylinders constantly like it should. Gas mileage hasn’t changed much, The VCM IS DAMAGING THE ENGINE BY CUTTING 6 CYLINDERS TO 4 ON AND OFF CONSTANTLY..
I got Toyota I had 2004 accord still got it and it’s good not sure about new Honda’s they just pretty honda should step up to the plate and fix this issue do recall
I have a 2000 accord with 310k 5w30 no oil consumption problem and use full synthetic every 3k miles and my 2008 honda crv 130k full synthetic 5w30 not 5w20.no problems ,and my 2020 pilot exl 29k miles no problems yet and I do all my own oil changes fluid changes and all my own work no issues yet I'll keep an eye on it.all cars I change at 3k not 5 or 7500.all my hondas have reached over 300k .91 accord had 480k,99 accord had 380k sold it ,2000 accord has 310k.but my mom's 2012 acura tl sh 3.7 has oil consumption problem 2 qrts every 2k miles
I was looking in to buying an accord with the 2.4 not no more!! Thanks for posting this video.. this is not the first person with this problem by the way
Our 2016 accord recently started having major oil consumption out of no where. The car has had its oil changed every 5k miles(95% highway) with full synthetic. The car has never been out of oil, but it was terribly close to it the first time I noticed the problem. There is no knocking, smoking, or dripps, so I dont know how the oil is just dissappearing from the crank case. It makes me terribly sad that Honda is dropping the ball this hard. They are supposed to be competitive with Toyota in terms of reliability, but this is nothing short of shameful. I cant believe they told you the rate of oil consumption was normal. WHAT A JOKE! Honda should be incredibly ashamed of the problem as well as their "solution." I hope a real solution is found, because this is unbelievable.
Yeah bro sorry… but u just did video like 2 days ago lot of my views started GTX castrol helped improve the oil consumption so try that for next few oil changed and keep an eye on it
On J37A engines replaced pcv,add oil catch can,do B12 soak piston procedure, add quality oil and start using Yamaha Yamalube Ring Free,if your rings were stuck that should help at least 50%
@@RBTheMechanic currently using Amsoil 5w20 signature series,so far burning is reduced, before i used oem acura oil and was gone after 1200miles,im not completely sure if the B12 helped with yamalube or just oil itself.
Good to hear. I thought it was just my daughters 2017 CRV that was burning oil. I did the oil change a few months ago and always check it every few weeks. City driving, not jack rabbit, but using oil. Darn...used to love Honda....CRV only has 40k on it, just have to keep a close eye o it...
I changed the PCV valve, actually bought from Honda like an idiot..58 dollars...but 5 months later it looks like the CRV is using oil again...some recommend us Castrol or just add oil...such a disappointment....Honda used to make such great engines...@@RBTheMechanic
@@davidwell686 yeah bro this is shame on honda. But do try gtx castrol oil do few oil changes and keep in eye on it it might help clean out position rings from carbon and make it better or fix it
That's why I move to Totota cars cause honda have alot of problems I got tire of it.Toyota cars motor and transmission last longer than Hondas also parts are cheaper than Hondas...
This is so irritating as a Honda owner. I thought after all these years the problem would be fixed. I believe this problem goes back to at least 8th gen Accords starting in 2008. I drive an old Honda which has limited life left in it and I'm considering what other options I should consider when the time comes besides Honda. Ridiculous!!
Toyota’ 2.5 liter engines and the 3.5 liter engines have oil burn issues. The 3.5 liter engine has leaking timing chain gaskets that requires removal of the engine for replacement. Blame U.S EPA regulations for lack of longevity of these engines. Car paints are getting watered down too.
My Honda Accord coupe 2012 has a bad oil consumption problem. I have no leaks but I still have to top of my car with oil about every 3 weeks. To fix this I just always carry extra oil with me and check my oil level.
Aloha RB.. I JUST GOT A 5 QT JUG OF CASTROL 10W30 AND A WIX OIL FILTER AND WILL DO AN OIL CHANGE TOMORROW. ALSO A NEW PVC VALVE. HOPE THIS STOPS OR AT LEAST SLOWS DOWN THE OIL BURNING IN MY 2016 HONDA CRV...
True. I am a professional and I have a 2010 Acura MDX with the same issue. I have replaced the PCV valve and cleaned the line completely but it burns oil in high RPM even with using high quality and high-milage engine oils! I have seen the same issue with many other Acura MDX, RDX, and Honda Accords for those model years. Acura and Honda do not take responsibility for a recall. Honda is a lier and I never recommended it’s products. It’s time to rise people. They fool people by changing oil and PCV valve and they charge them again and again and the problem is still there. I even called the corporate and complained about this issue; guess what? They said you are responsible for repairs and its costs because you don’t have warranty! We must do something my friends!
Yes you are correct 2008 V6. Went to Honda for oil burn. When it was new “It is Normal” really I am a car guy, its not normal. I think it could be the VCM system for starters. Any update on your learning would be helpful
Beside oil consumption, there is an engine rattle at cold start for 1 or 2 seconds ( VCT). There is so much pressure in the system that the valve cover gasket has leaked oil even on top of the cover. The lower tension piston rings are allowing blow by, diluting fuel which then vaporizes or burns oil off.
@@phillipholmes4466 you need to change the valve cover gasket and this guy must not know the PCV valve not being replaced on these engines cause vacuum leaks that will burn/leak oil eat rings and make the car run rich so yeah the pcv valve is a reason for any vehicle for this problem, this guy must be like scotty Kilmer lol love those Toyotas
The underlying issue for certain year k24z engines is piston rings getting stuck or carboned up or worst case worn rings or even cylinder walls. My 3rd gen crv has excessive blow by I will do a wet and dry compression test to see if the rings are just not sealing correctly, minimal oil loss with castrol edge full synthetic though. I’ve been using marvel mystery oil in the oil and fuel. If you do a piston soak with mmo and berrymans b12 chemtool it can actually fix the rings if it’s from carboned rings. It can restore even zero compression in some cases
Monitor oil consumption and perform a wet and dry compression test to get a better idea of the issue. Oil that smells like fuel is a sign of ring issues as well as blowby and oil consumption
My 2013 Honda accord I’m getting ready to update the Casity of the oil I’m a start putting 5W-30 in it might even go up to 0W 40 because I really don’t want to spend the money right now to replace it times are tough grace and peace
I am currently dumping 2 qts every 800 to 1000 miles in this motor. Truth. 2005 honda pilot. No leaks.. good compression.. runs great... 2 pcvs .. i don't understand this at all.
Yep. I drive a 2010 Honda Accord with a 3.5L V6 and I went through 3 quarts of oil between my last change. I'm confused but that's why I'm here searching for answers.
i just bought a 2016 honda crv se with 72,000 miles on it... i looked at the maintenance records that was given to me by the private seller and i see that the pcv valve was just replaced 4 months ago... so now after reading all the oil burning problems with 2.4 honda 4 cylinder engines im worried now that i bought a car that uses oil.. im going to change the oil in it this weekend and was going to go with mobile 1 oil but now i will use castro gtx instead... only time will tell if i screwed up by buying a honda ...
can i use 5w30 castro gtx oil instead of 0w20 oil in my 2016 honda crv?? i live in hawaii where it doesn't get below 60 degrees so i think a little bit heavier oil will help with the oil burning problem... @@RBTheMechanic
@RBTheMechanic -- I have owned a 2015 Honda CR-V (with 2.4L "Earth Dreams" engine) since it was new. I've always used Valvoline full synthetic 0W-20 engine oil and quality filters, and have the oil and filter changed every 3,500 miles. It has 103,000 miles on it now. It never used any oil until recently but now I have to add a quart about every 1200 to 1500 miles. Thanks for posting this video. I'm going to replace the PCV valve, but maybe I'll use the Castrol GTX oil the next time I have the oil and filter changed. The owner's manual recommends 0W-20 oil. Should I switch to 5W30 oil? I reside in Minnesota and it can get quite cold here during the winter (like minus 25 degrees in January).
I have a 2015 honda crv & every time, never fails, when it's time to change the oil though, when the dash says it's 15% low, it's just that! I had it go down to 10% & there was barely any oil in the engine! Plus the valve gasket is known for leaking too & I have to change that! Maybe I should of stuck with a Toyota!
Wait this is just telling u quality of life it’s time like clock. This dosent mean the amount oil left. Ur car is burning oil. At 10% u should still have full amount oil just dirty anyways yes honda need to take care of this oil consumption issue. This is big problem all of my customer think same 15% and oil is almost finish lol
@@RBTheMechanic The valve cover gasket I was told always seemed to fail! Mine failed 6 months after I purchased my car & it's been 3 years now so this is my next project along with the belt & spark plugs! I'll check my oil later today since it's been a month since I did the oil change!
Honda is not the same that use to be, in the 90s I personally took a honda accord with 320k and passed the smoge check without any problem at all, I had a 2008 accord with only 58k and it started burning oil at the rate of more than a quart every 3k miles, so I had to sale it, shame on Honda. In resume, honda is just the shade of what it just to be. Wake up people investigate and take it to a good mechanic before buying any honda accord from 2004-up.
I just bought a 2008 Honda CR-V on Feb 16, 2022, its a one owner vehicle always serviced at local Honda Dealership (T&T HONDA) I called the dealer to see if there is any upcoming schedule maintenance, service dep. told me a complete service was done on Feb 9, 2022 (brake fluid, engine oil, transmission oil power steering etc.) Just a week before I bought the vehicle. But man engine oil is like black seems like never been changed and it was low, first hole on the dipstick. I am gonna keep an eye on it, cause I read so much about it since my mechanic told me about the oil consumption problem on Honda CR-V engines.
Yeah do the oil change then keep and eye on it change the pcv valve maybe the last owner drove lotttt anyways good job checking it urself … some people messaged me stating GTX castrol oil worked well for them try that oil and then keep eye on it
I have a 2006 Honda Accord 2.4L with the what I been notified that before the 3-4 thousand miles for the next oil change it only has like half of the almost 4 quarter's that I put on it, and just today I got the red oil light on my car dash, so I had to pull over and wait to set it down and guess what,, not oil at all ,nada ,creo! For a moment I thought that was the oil pressure switch but nope, so I had to add another extra 3 quarter of oil just half way to do the next oil change (1500) miles
I have a 2014 Accord Sport with 150000 kilometers on the odo , never had oil burning issues . Be smart about maintenance, change oil twice a year and use a good oil filter, change transmission oil every 30 to 40 thousand kilometers, change spark plugs every 100 thousand kilometers, and change PCV valve every 100 thousand kilometers.
I just replace my pcv valve o ring on mine it was just leaking. I notice my past 2 oil changes I only took out 4quarts. I usually take out 4.75 quarts out of the 5 quarts that i put in. I have a 2007 accord se v6 with 350,000 miles. Great car i use it to pull my 5x8 trailer with two job boxes.
I have a 2013 honda fit with more than 100,000 mileage this car is burning too much oil, after i change my oil and run for 1700 kilometers 70% of the oil had gone, please i need your advice, i am using 10/40w synthetic oil from the start..please tell me what type of oil do i need to use..thank you
Replace this pcv valve and then keep an eye on the oil to see if it makes a diffrence also switch to gtx castrol oil it might help clean out the piston oil rings and make it better after few oil changes
The reason they burn oil is like other manufacturers (like my eyes 2013 Lexus) they tried a new type of oil ring on the pistons. This oil ring is a low pressure oil ring. Oil bypasses this, especially when it's 0w-20 grade oil. Then it burns oil like crazy .. Toyota admitted this was their fault and offered a warranty on short engine repairs for the old-style higher pressure rings which fixed the issue. Honda, however, clearly don't care and are relying on their brand name to get by
Thanks for the video i have a 2012 tsx acura i replaced the PCV valve it helped but i have to add 1Qt about every 1000 miles my car has about 130k mile any sugestions.
Replace the pcv valve!! Also if u want switch to GTX castrol oil fee people stated in comments they had results that oil helped clean piston oil rings and made the oil consumption better after few oil changes it showed results
nice informative video! i have a 2017 Accord Sport SE with only a little over 63,000 miles on it. upon randomly checking my oil the other day i was shocked to see that it was a little over 2 qts low with only 3,000 miles on the oil. before this i never noticed any excessive oil consumption. i use full synthetic and 0W20 as the factory recommends. would you suggest changing the PCV valve as a precaution and sticking to 0W20 weight oil, or going up to higher viscosity oil or what? also, even at a little over 2 qts low my oil light never came on.
Hello all. Have the same problem with my 2014 Accord. First time i have it was around 60k miles. I changed PCV valve and it helps. Now i have 100k miles and it start burning oil again. I change PCV valve again and it wont help. The car is running on Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic 0W-20 Motor Oil all the time. Will switch to Castrol Edge High Mileage 5W-30 Advanced Full Synthetic Motor Oil. Hope it will helps. How long engine can run on that kind of problem? Or if there is any oil inside it should be good for next couple k miles? Thanks for the video.
Update on my post. 5W30 won’t fix this problem for me and only led to around 35% increase of gas usage. But 5w20 Castro with help of Marvel Mystery Oil MM12R, it fix that problem. 1700 miles without any oil burns. Hope this will help to everyone
I have yet to meet anyone who drives a 2009 to 2014 Honda/Acura vehicle with a 3.7L and it doesn’t use oil. Acura knows and they don’t care. Matter of fact, whenever I see someone else in a TL SHAWD, I ask if it burns oil? And they reply without fail, yes.
Yup I have to take pictures and make note on all invoices so I have proof that customers car came for oil change and no oil came out so they don’t come back after 3k miles stating I didn’t put oil and engine is damaged and I inform the customer I had few that did come back stating I didn’t put oil in
I have accord 2017 with 100k miles Thankfully it doesn't burn any oil even when the oil walk around 7k miles But there is a little of oil leaks come from cover gasket I've never changed pcv
Wow, My honda accord 2016 LX started burning oil last year and the car only has 70,000 miles. I change the oil every 5000 miles, changed the PCV valve and will get the valve gasket changed. I think a big cause for them burning oil is due to how thin the oil is. I only have 57k on mine and I get my oil changed regularly but something was telling me to pull my dipstick. I was about 1/2 a quart low. When I went to add the oil I was amazed how thin it was it poured like water. I personally think as long as you stay on top of the oil you’ll get 200k miles and then some out of it
I have a 2012 pilot, it takes 4.5 quarts. After 5k mikes I drain the oil and only 2.5 quarts comes out. So 2 quarts. Was lost. I did a tune up and changed the PCV valve too. Still consuming oil. But there’s no leak at all. So there’s clearly a problem. I’m shocked that the low oil pressure light never came on,
Yeah it wount come it didn’t get to that point yet but if u was traveling very high speed high rpm it prolly would had anyways there’s not much u can do it’s mostly valve seals and rings how ever thet gtx castrol oil I had few people message me that worked or made a big difference
I just bought a 2007 Honda Pilot EX 4wd and it literally burned up 4 quarts of oil in a matter of a week. I'm in TN so used vehicles aren't covered under the Lemon Laws. What could be causing this? I've research and apparently the VCM system can cause it to do this but that's only in the 2wd's. The 4wd's don't have the VCM function I've also read that these motors have defective piston rings. If this is the problem how can I fix it?
We’ll try this replace the pcv valve check for leaks or anything… also I have been told by lot of viewers. I'm wondering if a full out engine flush would help it. Haveyou tried this yet, and did it help any?
Wow that’s excessive! Are you sure there is no leak anywhere? I own the same 07 EXL 4wd Pilot. What brand of oil are you using? also what is the Millage on your pilot? My daughter inlaw has a 2013 2.4 accord and I noticed this when she bought the car used with only 52,000K miles on it how much Soot was on the tail pipe and warned her I had herd a lot of negative things about earth dream engines which is supposed to be an update to the venerable K-24 engine and how even the Chinese government banned them for sale in. @@RBTheMechanic I am not a mechanic but from my research all GDI engines needs to have intake valves cleaned. If not maintained and cleaned regularly oil can leak past valve seals and then go into intake and even exhaust port can leak. Carbon buildup on valves have been the main cause of low oil in all cars not only GDI but with GDI you know there will be carbon buildup from PCV passing oil into throttle body. If from your experience you have seen misfire in cylinder close to intake then I think you can look from that angle too... and try to make sense what oil can do to valves at high tempratures.
I have Honda Accord 2013 it is burning oil too. I came to Honda dealer today when my car had no oil. They gave me list of things they will do without any guarantee that it will fix the problem.

Super tech 5w20 (warren distributor) to havoline synthetic blend high mileage 5w20 And changed PVC valve.
That reduced the oil consumption by 50% for me. It’s been holding up that way for 2 years now. 2007 Honda Odyssey with 228k miles.
Здравствуйте! Сегодня посмотрел ваше видео. как решили проблему в итоге? И gtx Castrol 5/20?
Not all the v6 engines have that ecm shut off for since cylinders. And they still burn oil😢

5w30. Thank me later..after seafoam of course;)
Run 5W-30, contrary to popular belief the engine is specified for it. CAFE standards prevent them from putting higher viscosity oils in the manual in the US. In the UK the manuals give 0W30 and 5W30 as optional

HONDA needs to stop calling these earth dreams engines and more like oil nightmare engines

Honda needs to put a low oil sensor on their cars and it should alert even when 1 quart short. Atleast a warning
Lol defiantly I didn’t even think of that they defiantly need to add that so we don’t need to worry till it goes super low

Yup people need to get together and start a movement these cars are now cheap and they try to avoid it till ur warranty is over
Yes you are correct 2008 V6. Went to Honda for oil burn. When it was new “It is Normal” really I am a car guy, its not normal. I think it could be the VCM system for starters. Any update on your learning would be helpful
I thing new u can try changing the valve then keep and eye on the oil also choose diffrent oil some people said GTX castrol worked out
Beside oil consumption, there is an engine rattle at cold start for 1 or 2 seconds ( VCT).

I never owned the Toyota but I think my next car will be a Toyota even if it's a Corolla it will be a Toyota
My 2017 Honda Pilot is burning too much gas! Which part do you think i should check?
The maf sensor and upstream oxygen sensors control gas check those clean them or replace them also could be clogged up filter
Your right foot is the culprit.
Yup I got 2004 accord I’m fixing it up little by little no need the new drama
Disable the VCM
There are tricks to do that
Search for VCM killer/tuner

VCM muzzler is the greatest thing ever! All 6 cylinders run at all times!
If I have a 2015 CR-V Earthdreams engine. What weight Castrol should I put in it? I see a lot of 5W-30 comments. Thank you.
U can use 5w20
Yeah do the oil change then keep and eye on it change the pcv valve maybe the last owner drove lotttt anyways good job checking it urself … some people messaged me stating GTX castrol oil worked well for them try that oil and then keep eye on it
I just changed mine noticed the difference immediately. 500 miles in still no problem
Oh ok good glad to hear that keep an eye on it
I have a 2006 Honda Accord 2.4L with the what I been notified that before the 3-4 thousand miles for the next oil change it only has like half of the almost 4 quarter's that I put on it, and just today I got the red oil light on my car dash, so I had to pull over and wait to set it down and guess what,, not oil at all ,nada ,creo! For a moment I thought that was the oil pressure switch but nope, so I had to add another extra 3 quarter of oil just half way to do the next oil change (1500) miles
That’s lotttt try switching to etc castrol oil it cleaning engine better and replace the pcv valve then keep eye on the oil
I want to purchase a 2014 honda accord coupe 2.4l for 6k with 75 k miles dont get it??? and how do you check for oil consumption before purchase?
U can check u less u drive for 2-4 k miles to see what it dose
Yeah those are good 2003 to 2007 are good
2018 accord 1.5 w/ Hondata tune. 98000 miles. Zero issues.
Good lucky you!!!
Update. 115000 miles. Headgasket had to get replaced. Coolant leaking into cylinder #2
What you need to say to the dealer is there is a slight vibration on idle and they will replace piston rings
I doubt it they will replace the piston rings they never wanna honer the warranty for this issue
Honda, however, clearly don't care and are relying on their brand name to get by
Ok yeah most likely the oil rings
Thanks for the video i have a 2012 tsx acura i replaced the PCV valve it helped but i have to add 1Qt about every 1000 miles my car has about 130k mile any sugestions.
Replace the pcv valve!! Also if u want switch to GTX castrol oil fee people stated in comments they had results that oil helped clean piston oil rings and made the oil consumption better after few oil changes it showed results
Is it OK to blend a bottle of new oil with old oil in engine? How effective is it to prevent the oil consumption?
Yup. I will get what I can out of mine, but, Honda not recalling VVT problems and etc... has put me off them.
Yup
Change oil before 5000 miles! I say time & time again it’s more important now than ever!!
Yup
nice informative video! i have a 2017 Accord Sport SE with only a little over 63,000 miles on it. upon randomly checking my oil the other day i was shocked to see that it was a little over 2 qts low with only 3,000 miles on the oil. before this i never noticed any excessive oil consumption. i use full synthetic and 0W20 as the factory recommends. would you suggest changing the PCV valve as a precaution and sticking to 0W20 weight oil, or going up to higher viscosity oil or what? also, even at a little over 2 qts low my oil light never came on.
Well u can change the viscosity of oil I would do the valve and then keep an eye on the oil level to see if it made improvement
Try Castrol GTX 5w20 full syn...it's $24 for a 5 qt jug and see if that helps,
Same issues with my honda civic 2016 ex burning oil more thn usual. Have replaced pcv valve let's hope for the good.
Replace the valve to start
My local dealer marks up those pcv valves 50-60$. Scummy move because they know people try the cheaper fix first.
It can run and keep going forever but u need to keep an eye on the oil level can’t go to low it will damage the engine
Update on my post. 5W30 won’t fix this problem for me and only led to around 35% increase of gas usage. But 5w20 Castro with help of Marvel Mystery Oil MM12R, it fix that problem. 1700 miles without any oil burns. Hope this will help to everyone
my 2017 honda fit with the 1.5 runs like a clock. no issues what's so ever.
Cool ur lucky one!
Yup I have to take pictures and make note on all invoices so I have proof that customers car came for oil change and no oil came out so they don’t come back after 3k miles stating I didn’t put oil and engine is damaged and I inform the customer I had few that did come back stating I didn’t put oil in
I have accord 2017 with 100k miles
Thankfully it doesn't burn any oil
even when the oil walk around 7k miles
But there is a little of oil leaks come from cover gasket
I've never changed pcv
Wow, My honda accord 2016 LX started burning oil last year and the car only has 70,000 miles. I change the oil every 5000 miles, changed the PCV valve and will get the valve gasket changed. I will never buy a honda again and I have been a loyal honda accord ower for over 20 years. The dealer says the oil lose is normal!!!!!!!
Yeah I got 2004 accord it still running like no. Dosent burn a drop of oil
My 2011 K24 VTEC Acura motor burns oil too....changed the PCV which reduced the burn but didn't stop it. No idea where the rest of the oil is going!
It’s internal I would attempt to do next few oil changes using gtx castrol oil lot of people stated that helped out it cleaned piston oil rings and make it much better
@@RBTheMechanic thanks I'll give that a try. The other issue when the oil level drops is the VTC actuator death rattle....that's how I know a quart of oil has magically disappeared before I even check the dipstick!
Im burning oil crazy. Have to keep a 5quart royal purple in the trunk and check oil levels before long distances. Very annoying and costly! 2017 sport 79k
Yeah true bro every single earth dream engine got this issue anyways did u change the pcv valve? Replace that first if u haven’t and then keep an eye on it also try to use GTX castrol oil lot of people sent me comments stating it made a big difference using sport oil
Well made video. It happens to know how that flow channel it works from the crankcase vacuum hose true PCV valve and intake manifold exit?

I have access to a DIY auto shop. If the PCV Valve or the piston rings are not the issue, what would lead to the engine losing oil at 150K miles. What is the worst case and likely scenario? Pistons, intake and exhaust valves within the engine block? I have a 2014 Accord Sport and it does lose oil some but after 4000 miles after an oil change. I change my oil every 5K miles.
Piston rings and valves seals are the worst case
You are right. I am not buying another Honda. The quality is not there any more and the cars are getting uglier. It has become a money pit.
Yup it’s crazy!! They should recall and fix or refund people
I have a 01 accord 4 cylinder I changed the pcv valve and it's burning oil still like crazy and I do my oil changes no leaks at all it has 99,000 original miles help me or where your shop?
U can’t fix oil consumption problem changed pvc valve and check for leaks that’s all I do going any further is rebuilding engine change piston oil rings and valve seals
You know what, I think its the type of oil they are manufacturing... all these "synthetic" types and so on..... I had a 92" cougar with 150K miles, it never burned oil.... I have a 2004 accord its burning oil...owned the cougar from 1997-2006 - Owned the accord from 2009-to present....
I think a big cause for them burning oil is due to how thin the oil is. I only have 57k on mine and I get my oil changed regularly but something was telling me to pull my dipstick. I was about 1/2 a quart low. When I went to add the oil I was amazed how thin it was it poured like water. I personally think as long as you stay on top of the oil you’ll get 200k miles and then some out of it
That’s also the piston oil rings go bad
@@RBTheMechanic which is also true and overtime as the rings wear out more I may have to switch to a thicker oil
GTX castrol oil help clean up engine build up on piston oil rights so make ur next oil change GTX and it may take few oil change to make a difference of course u have to keep an eye on the oil lever all times
@@RBTheMechanic yea the pcv is the next step. I actually added some high mileage seafoam to the oil when I put it in there, hoping this will clean it up a little, I'm planning on doing this for the next few oil changes. I can say this I addedthe 4 quarts last night and the seafoam and I check it today and its already black so there's definitely some gunk in there.
With my pilot I experienced something weird a while ago but only while using mobile 1 oil I was always 1.5 qt short around 600 miles. I then discovered that when I use Castrol edge high mileage or Amsoil XL oils my pilot doesn’t burn oil between changes and I’m doing it every 5k miles it’s weird!
@Alexander Cuello I can try that ive actually been using mobile 1.

I would fight the dealer why take the loss but yeah it’s bug repair costly so u better off getting rid of it
Get a Toyota, even a boring used corolla if you have too. At least they are mechanically more sound. Honda stopped being reliable after 2000.
@@JohnS-il1dr I think up to 2007 it was well built
I think all the Hondas from 2000 and up have design flaws. Not pcv issue. Unless lack of maintenance but thats totally different.
Should I try thicker oil? And what is the VCM ?
I would replace this valve and switch to gtx castrol it helps clean the position rings and after few oil changes it should get better but u do need to keep an eye on the level of the oil
Hyndai just has a massive sue for oil consumption, and owner demand them to replacement the whole engine about 100+millions car...Honda should he smart to replacement pcv valve instead of replacement the whole engine..

China so they must be pretty damn bad I figured also mechanic Scotty Kilmer here on RUclips tells potential Honda buyers to avoid Honda’s with them another thing about the earth dream engines that I noticed is that they also vibrate excessively during idle I could hear and feel my daughter in-law’s Honda 2.4 engine vibrating while I was in the bedroom while it was in the garage idling for work 😂
