I have a 4L SOHC myself that started with misfires and then no start, only cranking. Based off my trouble shooting and the shop's proportional compression test coming back equal, I think I'm looking at a timing chain failure. Is there a way to inspect the timing chain without removing the engine? Also, if the chain fails will the valves be damaged? Doing a lot of reading right now and any advice would be much appreciated.

      Hey 👋
Yes pull a valve cover and check. What year? They improved the guides in 2005+
Normally though you will get a rattle at idle before they skip enough to not run.
It is an interference motor so it will hit If the chain skips. Id turn it over slowly by hand when checking the chain.
You really need to get a full diagnosis for it. Id suggest starting with fuel pressure… scan for codes etc. if you do need guide etc… use only ford parts unless you just want to unload the truck. 👍

@@RangerShop1 Its a 2010 Ranger XLT. The codes were 2 individual cylinder misfires then a code for general misfiring right before I turned it off and it would not start up again. Fuel pressure test came back good after I replaced the fuel filter. It has spark. Even with starter fluid applied it doesn't sound like it even wants to try to start though. I've done a lot of troubleshooting without removing the engine, so I assume that the valves are thoroughly smashed at this point.

How did it turn out? Did you figure out what happened?

Hi Ranger Shop. A couple of questions: You said, "This 4L sohc, it was rattling a bit, ya know around 3,000 rpm..." What exactly was rattling? The timing chain? The timing chain guides? Or, the the engine, generally? What was the "it" when you say "...it was rattling..."?
Also, besides the rattling, was there any other issues that were being caused as a result of the rattling? eg: timing being off and causing pinging?
Pinging when under load seems to be a common problem with the 4L engine. I currently have that problem (2005 4L,175,000 kms). Is that problem necessarily related to something that would require replacing both timing chains, or is there a way to adjust the timing to resolve the problem? Or, is the pinging a problem that isn't necessarily related to the timing chain (or the timing, itself) that can be resolved in another way besides resetting the timing or replacing the timing chains? Thanking you in advance.

Sorry for the delay. My rattling was caused by the guides they were cracked. Also the rear chain seemed to be stretched. Now that I have replaced these parts along with timing the cams I don’t have any more pinging. So yes I think it caused some engine pinging. Now flat out with my trailer in tow no more pinging at all.
Check TSB for your year pinging I think it was quite a problem with a whole process to fix including at the very end replacing the computer. I think by 2005 the chain rattle was fixed… but If you thought it was out a bit you could buy the cam timing tools remove you valve covers and check your timing if the tool lines up your good, no need to change anything.

In a ranger does the engine have to get pulled?

    • @RangerShop1
      @RangerShop1  7 месяцев назад

No apparently you can slide the transmission back and do it. I’ve always pulled it. It’s easy to pull and then you can verify no plastic is stuck in the oil pan.

What was the difference in price between the kits without pump

I’m sorry not sure what you mean. I didn’t install a kit, I ordered all the individual timing chain guides etc from Ford. 😁👍

What was your total in oem parts vs the aftermarket kit

Sorry just saw this question. I would not recommend installing the kits…. but if you did I believe all my parts were about 600$ and the kits were like 300$.
But it’s a lot of work to do twice.

I'm sorry I don't really know but if the engine looks the same then I think it should be. From what I know basically the Mazda was just a ford with different badging

Yes, Mazda B-Series and Ranger have identical drivetrains.

Hi bro where can I get a spiral locking clip for the front left CV shaft? My 4wheel hubs keep popping out on the trail and I cant get 4wheell

Sorry I’m not sure… I always had them come with the axle shaft. I’d check with a ford dealer get a parts blow up of the front end…. See if you can order them separately.

Lot of work. How much to do this to my 98 ranger 4.0

    • @RangerShop1

I’d say if you are pretty good mechanically you should be able do it in two or three days.

Your 98 Ranger doesn't have the 4.0 SOHC engine. The first year that the 4.0 SOHC engine was installed in the Ford Ranger was 2001.
