THEORY TIME: Maybe Batman isn't the most reliable narrator for his own story at this point -- maybe he has an inflated sense of self in his early days (his opening monologue IS overly dramatic, if we're being honest). Maybe no one in "The Penguin" is worried about Batman because he's actually not that big of a deal yet -- despite his own delusions of grandeur. What has anyone in Gotham actually SEEN him do yet? Why SHOULD they FEAR him? In "The Batman", who TELLS the audience that criminals live in fear of Batman? The Batman tells us that himself. But what do we actually SEE? Do we see ANYONE actually fearful of Batman when they first see him? The gang on the subway platform aren't scared of him when they first see him. Nor are the bouncers at Oz's. Oz isn't scared of him at first -- if anything, he's amused. The Riddler isn't scared of him. NOT ONE CRIMINAL in "The Batman" movie is actually scared of Batman when they first see him.

The movie starts giving you the brief explanation that criminals fear Batman, but in fact nobody fears him and he acts like a dumbass, knocks on the Iceberg's door, dude's not stealthy AT ALL, doesn't plan shit.....all his actions contradict the idea of the movie.
I think the out of universe explanation for Batman's absence is that if Batman did get mentioned or show up at all, he'd take over the show. Especially with how popular Battinson is, he would just take over everything. The show would no longer be about Penguin and the street level stuff. But it would become all about Batman. In universe, I think it's multifaceted. Bruce was the target of a lot of negative publicity thanks to Riddler's antics. Alfred nearly died because of all that. Plus, he's rich. What would a rich person do in his position? Take recent events as an excuse for a long vacation. But this hiatus serves several goals. It lets Alfred recover away from more potential danger, it let's the negative press around Bruce get lost in other things, and it lets the perception of the Batman become more positive. At the end of the movie, Bruce learned that vengeance wasn't going to change anything. The way he started to become a symbol of hope in Gotham's darkest day is shown to us in a couple of different scenes. The first is where he holds out his hand to the crowd huddled under debris in the flooded stadium. The orphan boy is the first to take his hand. Then comes everyone else. The second is when he's helping the injured person get loaded onto the helicopter. That person holds onto him, almost in like a "don't leave me" kind of way. He has to silently reassure them with his touch and facial expressions that it's going to be ok. If he leaves to let that last memory of him being a symbol of hope really sink in, he goes a long way towards helping Gotham when he eventually returns. If he went right back to Batman after the Riddler mess happened, I think he'd still be too early on in sorting out that vengeance isn't the way, so he'd just inadvertently damage the good image he built up in recent memory. Bruce is probably using the time away to reassess things. He's probably realizing there's value in the Bruce Wayne persona that he can use to actually improve the material conditions in Gotham. I'd wager he's also sorting out changes to Batman's methods to avoid the vengeance bit and instead lean into the hope aspect more. He certainly wouldn't have that figured out right away after realizing his error. I also imagine that everyone, especially Oz, just doesn't want to even talk about the Batman. Oz was chased down on the highway, car crash and all, got shown the commish with a chewed up face, and left bound by Batman and Gordon. I wouldn't want to talk about that either. Batman also likes to remind us that criminals are a superstitious lot. If they don't talk about him, he won't show up. So he's either had such a huge impact on the mob that he's just this boogeyman they collectively don't talk about, or his disappearance acts as a signal to the mob that they're safe from Batman since he doesn't seem to be around anymore. But boy will they be in for a surprise when Batman does come back.
The Long Halloween detailed the war between the Falcones and Maronis and Batman was HEAVILY involved. Both Batman and Catwoman should have appeared in this series.

I disagree completely with the assertion fans are wondering where the Batman is. This show has been so engrossing, the thought never enters my mind when I'm watching it. I don't think I'm alone in this sentiment. Take your time doing your thing in the shadows, Batman. We know how to call you when we need you.

Some nice hypotheticals there, Mr Charcuterie. Batman is 84 years old now, and arguably more popular and appreciated than ever. It's a testament to the fundamentals of the character that we can still enjoy variations on his storyline so many years later. Gotham hasn't always had Batman, and Gotham will exist long after Batman disappears. His current (temporary) absence reminds us that before there was the "invincible" Caped Crusader, there was the very human Bruce Wayne, who, like anybody else, needs time off every so often to rehabilitate and recharge.
I’ve just assumed that his Batcave was flooded, and now he has to rebuild everything. But now seeing them use the tunnels in The Penguin, idk, he may just be brooding and rethinking the whole Batman thing and how he can really exemplify hope for Gotham

No, reevesverse has nothing to do with any of that, gunn clearly labelled it as an elseworld story. DCU Batman will feature his batfamily including damian and league of assassins, Pattinson's Batman has nothing to do with that.
I figured he’d be more linked with Alfred and attending to his needs while focusing on trying to be a philanthropist which is what Alfred wants. They deal with City Hall, Wayne Enterprises eventually and I believe around the beginning Wayne Enterprises will try to get him out as owner due to the Wayne legacy being exposed to corruption etc. it may lead to Bruce having to fight for the company.
I believe the reason why Batman is not in the story primarily because he's got other things to do rather than punish criminals and try to prevent inevitable gang war. In the end of the previous movie he realised that he could be not only a symbol of vengeance, but also a symbol of hope, so my guess is he is currently helping the folks of Gotham. Maybe as Batman, maybe as Bruce Wayne. I mean the city really needs Bruce Wayne at the moment to deal with the consequences of the flood caused by the Riddler rather than the Bat in his Vengeance mode.
Oz is main narrative. The amount of flashbacks in episode 7 shows me they are fully invested in his story as well as Sophia’s and by all info this story leads right into Batman 2.

Batman doesn't care about the 2 biggest crime families taking each other off the board. But Matches Malone is probably making connections and gathering information.
Also, i'm pretty sure that one of the reasons there is no mention of the Batman thus far is due to toxic fans. If the sign was flashed or if someone mentioned him everyone would be like "OH THE BATMAN IS GONNA SHOW UP SOONER OR LATER!!!" and then when he doesn't everyone is pissed off and whining.
No matter what reason why Batman would show his face the criminals should be scared, the bat signal should be in the sky, Batman wouldn’t ignore all the big things happening in the penguin. There should be some type of mention of the bat. Especially amongst the chriminals

He doesn’t need to be there physically. -show the bat signal in the sky from time to time - have small mentions of “the Batman vigilante” during some news clips that play in the background of scenes. - when we see our criminals on screen strategizing and discussing their current plans, have them mention needing to keep an eye out for the bat or that there is no need to worry about the bat because he’s dealing with the flood fallout in the main city. It’s the fact that aside from that quick clip in the first episode, this show would make you think that the Batman doesn’t exist at all and it’s wrong. I don’t get it. Show the signal in the background sky here and there so we know that him and Gordon are out there still fighting the good fight. We don’t need to see him in this series at all. I’m blown away that Matt reeves is ok with this detail not being in the show at all. I’m loving the show but not giving the Batmans presence and reputation a little significance in his own city is horse shit.

Isn't this "year two" Batman? If I remember correctly, he explained in the movie that he can't be everywhere and is selective with when/where he showes up. But it is odd that Penguine hasn't mentioned him, especially in the first episode. He could have blamed Batman for Alberto's death.
Maybe after the death of falcon in the Batman movie Batman believes that left over henchmen are not as much of a threat or maybe Batman is ignoring the people of crown point and finally maybe he’s doing more as Bruce helping financially for the city of Gotham
When I first heard that the penguin was going to have his own series on Max, I was thrilled. I wasn’t looking forward to seeing Batman. I was looking forward to seeing the penguin. I guess I kinda like mob movies. Colin Farrell plays that part so splendidly I was excited to see him level up, I knew Batman wasn’t gonna be in this at all so you guys asking that question it just kind of annoying because I didn’t expect to see the Batman. My theory is, he's busy being bruce Wayne. In the movie, alfred has been very worried that wayne enterprises is in danger of collapse if bruce doesnt take care of it. The mayor also said that bruce wayne isnt really doing philanthropy work which their family is known for. And since the flood, I think wayne enterprise is in dire need of bruce taking the lead. you gotta remember, he's new at being batman and can barely keep up with balancing both personas
I know there were people who saw whole season of The Penguin before it was released and they said there is no Batman in this one. But i still hope that we will see his shadow (or something like that) in the final shot of the final episode
My theory - Batman is strategically sitting back cause he learned from The Riddler. Think about this ya’ll - the biggest lesson Batman learned with Riddler was that crime in Gotham extended beyond thugs and serial killers. Bruce Wayne was literally shocked when he learned that the mayor, commissioner, and even the D.A. were corrupt and worked for Gotham’s biggest crime lord. Worst, its been like this his whole life even when his parents were alive. He didn’t know this before. Even Gordon didn’t know. Riddler exposed everything, and that shook the hell outta Bruce. So if I’m Batman, I’m not rushing back out at every bat signal to whoop on some thugs. He wants to REALLY make a difference, but wants to do it opposite of how Riddler attempted. That’s what Joker was referring to in their conversation - that Batman was a little envious of Riddler because The Riddler was actually changing the city down to it’s very bones while Batman was playing wack-a-mole with criminals. So it doesn’t make sense for Batman, after experiencing all of this, to run out at every signal in the sky anymore. I think he wants big fish, so it makes sense to make them swim to the surface since all the power seats in Gotham are either vacant or have new sitters. See how things play out, how the power structure is, and then figure out how he can disrupt that system to make Gotham better in his way (not Riddler’s).
Btw - this goes for everybody: Penguin, Sophia, Dr. Rush, etc. Riddler made everyone realize that they were pawns when they thought they were more powerful pieces. Now folks are looking at and attempting to change power structures in their own way.
Let’s be honest here Batman has a very good reason not being able to do anything in these events, here is the following. 1. Renewal: riddler really tarnished the Wayne reputation by showing that Thomas Wayne not only started Renewal, but had ties to Carmine Falcone and was responsible for the death of a reporter thanks to Falcone. This definitely fucked up Bruce Wayne’s image and his partners so I’m sure he’s been doing damage control. 2. Alfred is still injured and since he was being the front man of Wayne enterprises Bruce has to fill in the mean time. 3. While I’m sure he’s aware that a new drug hit the streets, Batman still can’t get everywhere and since the city is still in ruins because of the riddler he’s most likely doing more saving people than he is fighting people at this point.
No live action TV show has ever displayed a clear characteristic depiction of Batman. They all avoid, hide, mascarete, change. And it's always a secret why, they just say it's too complicated and they can't talk about it. I strongly believe there is an impediment to Warner, HBO regarding Batman on TV. @@DigitalCharcuterieNothing else explains this.

Im honestly not remotely bothered by it. I genuinely think there could be any number of valid reasons Batman hasn't shown. I think it was really only the last couple episodes that things have actually started escalating to the point of even getting his attention tbh. So at this point, maybe he IS investigating, but not in a really obvious way knocking down doors like he was in the movie, considering they make a point of him gradually using alternative ways of getting into places like the Iceberg lounge. I am still hoping we get Matches Malone in the next movie or two since this is meant to be a detective focused trilogy, and would be a great way for Rob to flex his vocal/accent muscles that we see him doing so often throughout his filmography.
Or it could be like how we have all these other shows about Batman characters without any Batman in any of them like Gotham and Pennyworth, if Warner had the rights to a live action TV Batman show, we'd be getting a straight up Batman TV show.

Alright, let’s get into it: Gotham’s got a mess only a mother-or a billionaire in a bat costume-could love. During The Penguin series, I imagine Bruce Wayne is off somewhere on his “Mr. Wayne Goes to Washington” tour, playing politics like he did in No Man’s Land. He’s not out there in the trenches, but he’s still pulling the strings, convincing government suits to finally toss a bone to Gotham. Because let’s be real, if Bruce Wayne were just putting his name on hospital wings, Gotham would’ve folded ages ago. But here’s the twist: for all his shadowy vigilantism, The Batman is still a bedtime story for Gotham’s criminals. He’s like that legendary mixtape you only heard about through whispers-cool in the streets, but no one’s actually heard him in the mainstream. To the gangsters, he’s a myth, a punchline, a ghost story they tell at parties. They’re still scared of Sofia’s muscle or Maroni’s cash flow-real threats with real consequences. Batman? He’s still the city’s best-kept secret, the indie act everyone swears will blow up any day now. Lol
The car chase…I mean he chased him all over. I’m personally haven’t missed Batman in this show, but, if I step back..maybe, MAYBE (lol) Batman should have a presence … but like I said I’m not missing it. This was the one thing I wasn’t going to like about this show and I still don’t like it. I refuse to believe that Batman wouldn’t at least look into it at this point. What could be bigger than a weeks-long gang war between Penguin, Sal and Sofia? It’s ridiculous. He needs to appear. I’m still holding my breath for a cameo in the finale, maybe a Bat Signal in the sky and Penguin says, “Ah, fu…” and then the credits roll lol. But something has to happen with him. Batman owns the streets of Gotham at night and Bruce is the most prominent figure during the day. The fact that we haven’t got a single mention of either of them, not even something on the news in the background, is ridiculous and unacceptable. I do want to mention that it hasn’t ruined the show. I still think it’s a phenomenal show and it gets better every week, but at the very least his existence needs to be acknowledged.

Batman as single entity is a huge waste of money. If Bruce Wayne was to pump all his millions into the GCPD, instead of Batman toys, they could be way more effective at fighting crime than just him.
Picture this as in the last few minutes of the finale , flash back to the first episode where oz goes to Eve for an alibi after killing Alberto but you see from the perspective of Eve opening the door to oz , in the first ep she mentions she has a visitor so oz can’t come in but we never get to find out who it is leaving the audience just think it’s another scumbag , imagine it’s Bruce Wayne
Also my predictions are I believe Sofia could potentially come out on top , oz mom will 100% die maybe by oz , I think Sofia will put someone in Arkham as payback for putting her there maybe its oz who’s to say he doesn’t become the king of Gotham just yet depending on how many seasons they do, but I feel victor will be experimented on and maybe he’s the one who gets put in Arkham fuelling the theory he will become victor zsasz , but if oz does come out on top it could end with him expanding his underground empire further and finding the batcave by accident
2 reasons... 1 he's a vigilante that the cops despise...calling him is against the law technically and by doing so is basically calling them incompetent to do their jobs 2 he could be off training this is only year 2 of him being batman and he clearly does not have the fighting abilities or equipment of the comics batman who's a master of multiple forms of martial arts....so he needs a vacation to train 😂

Especially with how popular Battinson is, he would just take over everything. The show would no longer be about Penguin and the street level stuff. But it would become all about Batman.
In universe, I think it's multifaceted. Bruce was the target of a lot of negative publicity thanks to Riddler's antics. Alfred nearly died because of all that. Plus, he's rich. What would a rich person do in his position? Take recent events as an excuse for a long vacation. But this hiatus serves several goals. It lets Alfred recover away from more potential danger, it let's the negative press around Bruce get lost in other things, and it lets the perception of the Batman become more positive.
At the end of the movie, Bruce learned that vengeance wasn't going to change anything. The way he started to become a symbol of hope in Gotham's darkest day is shown to us in a couple of different scenes. The first is where he holds out his hand to the crowd huddled under debris in the flooded stadium. The orphan boy is the first to take his hand. Then comes everyone else. The second is when he's helping the injured person get loaded onto the helicopter. That person holds onto him, almost in like a "don't leave me" kind of way. He has to silently reassure them with his touch and facial expressions that it's going to be ok. If he leaves to let that last memory of him being a symbol of hope really sink in, he goes a long way towards helping Gotham when he eventually returns.
If he went right back to Batman after the Riddler mess happened, I think he'd still be too early on in sorting out that vengeance isn't the way, so he'd just inadvertently damage the good image he built up in recent memory. Bruce is probably using the time away to reassess things. He's probably realizing there's value in the Bruce Wayne persona that he can use to actually improve the material conditions in Gotham. I'd wager he's also sorting out changes to Batman's methods to avoid the vengeance bit and instead lean into the hope aspect more. He certainly wouldn't have that figured out right away after realizing his error.
I also imagine that everyone, especially Oz, just doesn't want to even talk about the Batman. Oz was chased down on the highway, car crash and all, got shown the commish with a chewed up face, and left bound by Batman and Gordon. I wouldn't want to talk about that either.
Batman also likes to remind us that criminals are a superstitious lot. If they don't talk about him, he won't show up. So he's either had such a huge impact on the mob that he's just this boogeyman they collectively don't talk about, or his disappearance acts as a signal to the mob that they're safe from Batman since he doesn't seem to be around anymore. But boy will they be in for a surprise when Batman does come back.

Some nice hypotheticals there, Mr Charcuterie. Batman is 84 years old now, and arguably more popular and appreciated than ever. It's a testament to the fundamentals of the character that we can still enjoy variations on his storyline so many years later. Gotham hasn't always had Batman, and Gotham will exist long after Batman disappears. His current (temporary) absence reminds us that before there was the "invincible" Caped Crusader, there was the very human Bruce Wayne, who, like anybody else, needs time off every so often to rehabilitate and recharge.

I figured he’d be more linked with Alfred and attending to his needs while focusing on trying to be a philanthropist which is what Alfred wants. They deal with City Hall, Wayne Enterprises eventually and I believe around the beginning Wayne Enterprises will try to get him out as owner due to the Wayne legacy being exposed to corruption etc. it may lead to Bruce having to fight for the company.

I believe the reason why Batman is not in the story primarily because he's got other things to do rather than punish criminals and try to prevent inevitable gang war. In the end of the previous movie he realised that he could be not only a symbol of vengeance, but also a symbol of hope, so my guess is he is currently helping the folks of Gotham. Maybe as Batman, maybe as Bruce Wayne. I mean the city really needs Bruce Wayne at the moment to deal with the consequences of the flood caused by the Riddler rather than the Bat in his Vengeance mode.

It’s the fact that aside from that quick clip in the first episode, this show would make you think that the Batman doesn’t exist at all and it’s wrong. I don’t get it. Show the signal in the background sky here and there so we know that him and Gordon are out there still fighting the good fight. We don’t need to see him in this series at all. I’m blown away that Matt reeves is ok with this detail not being in the show at all. I’m loving the show but not giving the Batmans presence and reputation a little significance in his own city is horse shit.

Isn't this "year two" Batman? If I remember correctly, he explained in the movie that he can't be everywhere and is selective with when/where he showes up. But it is odd that Penguine hasn't mentioned him, especially in the first episode. He could have blamed Batman for Alberto's death.
Maybe after the death of falcon in the Batman movie Batman believes that left over henchmen are not as much of a threat or maybe Batman is ignoring the people of crown point and finally maybe he’s doing more as Bruce helping financially for the city of Gotham

My theory - Batman is strategically sitting back cause he learned from The Riddler. Think about this ya’ll - the biggest lesson Batman learned with Riddler was that crime in Gotham extended beyond thugs and serial killers. Bruce Wayne was literally shocked when he learned that the mayor, commissioner, and even the D.A. were corrupt and worked for Gotham’s biggest crime lord. Worst, its been like this his whole life even when his parents were alive. He didn’t know this before. Even Gordon didn’t know. Riddler exposed everything, and that shook the hell outta Bruce. So if I’m Batman, I’m not rushing back out at every bat signal to whoop on some thugs. He wants to REALLY make a difference, but wants to do it opposite of how Riddler attempted. That’s what Joker was referring to in their conversation - that Batman was a little envious of Riddler because The Riddler was actually changing the city down to it’s very bones while Batman was playing wack-a-mole with criminals. So it doesn’t make sense for Batman, after experiencing all of this, to run out at every signal in the sky anymore. I think he wants big fish, so it makes sense to make them swim to the surface since all the power seats in Gotham are either vacant or have new sitters. See how things play out, how the power structure is, and then figure out how he can disrupt that system to make Gotham better in his way (not Riddler’s).
Btw - this goes for everybody: Penguin, Sophia, Dr. Rush, etc. Riddler made everyone realize that they were pawns when they thought they were more powerful pieces. Now folks are looking at and attempting to change power structures in their own way.

Let’s be honest here Batman has a very good reason not being able to do anything in these events, here is the following.
1. Renewal: riddler really tarnished the Wayne reputation by showing that Thomas Wayne not only started Renewal, but had ties to Carmine Falcone and was responsible for the death of a reporter thanks to Falcone. This definitely fucked up Bruce Wayne’s image and his partners so I’m sure he’s been doing damage control.
2. Alfred is still injured and since he was being the front man of Wayne enterprises Bruce has to fill in the mean time.
3. While I’m sure he’s aware that a new drug hit the streets, Batman still can’t get everywhere and since the city is still in ruins because of the riddler he’s most likely doing more saving people than he is fighting people at this point.

Im honestly not remotely bothered by it. I genuinely think there could be any number of valid reasons Batman hasn't shown. I think it was really only the last couple episodes that things have actually started escalating to the point of even getting his attention tbh. So at this point, maybe he IS investigating, but not in a really obvious way knocking down doors like he was in the movie, considering they make a point of him gradually using alternative ways of getting into places like the Iceberg lounge. I am still hoping we get Matches Malone in the next movie or two since this is meant to be a detective focused trilogy, and would be a great way for Rob to flex his vocal/accent muscles that we see him doing so often throughout his filmography.

During The Penguin series, I imagine Bruce Wayne is off somewhere on his “Mr. Wayne Goes to Washington” tour, playing politics like he did in No Man’s Land.
He’s not out there in the trenches, but he’s still pulling the strings, convincing government suits to finally toss a bone to Gotham. Because let’s be real, if Bruce Wayne were just putting his name on hospital wings, Gotham would’ve folded ages ago.
But here’s the twist: for all his shadowy vigilantism, The Batman is still a bedtime story for Gotham’s criminals. He’s like that legendary mixtape you only heard about through whispers-cool in the streets, but no one’s actually heard him in the mainstream. To the gangsters, he’s a myth, a punchline, a ghost story they tell at parties. They’re still scared of Sofia’s muscle or Maroni’s cash flow-real threats with real consequences. Batman? He’s still the city’s best-kept secret, the indie act everyone swears will blow up any day now. Lol

This was the one thing I wasn’t going to like about this show and I still don’t like it. I refuse to believe that Batman wouldn’t at least look into it at this point. What could be bigger than a weeks-long gang war between Penguin, Sal and Sofia? It’s ridiculous. He needs to appear. I’m still holding my breath for a cameo in the finale, maybe a Bat Signal in the sky and Penguin says, “Ah, fu…” and then the credits roll lol. But something has to happen with him. Batman owns the streets of Gotham at night and Bruce is the most prominent figure during the day. The fact that we haven’t got a single mention of either of them, not even something on the news in the background, is ridiculous and unacceptable.
I do want to mention that it hasn’t ruined the show. I still think it’s a phenomenal show and it gets better every week, but at the very least his existence needs to be acknowledged.
I’m not he hasn’t appeared as much as I am the lack of even being mentioned. I guess he could be looking into it but we don’t see his perspective, but ya it’s been a choice that hasn’t ruined the show but exists.

Batman as single entity is a huge waste of money. If Bruce Wayne was to pump all his millions into the GCPD, instead of Batman toys, they could be way more effective at fighting crime than just him.

Picture this as in the last few minutes of the finale , flash back to the first episode where oz goes to Eve for an alibi after killing Alberto but you see from the perspective of Eve opening the door to oz , in the first ep she mentions she has a visitor so oz can’t come in but we never get to find out who it is leaving the audience just think it’s another scumbag , imagine it’s Bruce Wayne
Also my predictions are I believe Sofia could potentially come out on top , oz mom will 100% die maybe by oz , I think Sofia will put someone in Arkham as payback for putting her there maybe its oz who’s to say he doesn’t become the king of Gotham just yet depending on how many seasons they do, but I feel victor will be experimented on and maybe he’s the one who gets put in Arkham fuelling the theory he will become victor zsasz , but if oz does come out on top it could end with him expanding his underground empire further and finding the batcave by accident

2 reasons... 1 he's a vigilante that the cops despise...calling him is against the law technically and by doing so is basically calling them incompetent to do their jobs
2 he could be off training this is only year 2 of him being batman and he clearly does not have the fighting abilities or equipment of the comics batman who's a master of multiple forms of martial arts....so he needs a vacation to train 😂

Hopefully practicing because he was trash in the first movie. Only good part of the Batman was the penguin. Hated the movie but love the show and the depiction of Gotham. I’ll give reeves that. He is the first to make Gotham feel like a character in itself which is a big part of the comics also.
