It was about 25 knots and rising quickly at the start of the video when I decided to reef early. I switched the 70% jib to a storm jib and put a 2nd reef in the main. I wish I had more footage, but the camera battery died, and I wasn’t comfortable changing it single handed downwind. After the video I sailed with just the storm jib for a bit, then put a 3rd reef in the main.
Bought a used Venture 17 that was only one year old and practically new. I was only 21 years old myself and practically new. My girlfriend and I would go on sailing-dates. Then one day we eloped and sailed to Catalina Island and got married. We stood on a hill overlooking Avalon bay. The taxi-cab driver was our witness. That honeymoon night a northeastern blew-in (a nasty local windstorm.) There were breakers rolling in the bay. I worried about our little boat, thrashing about out there on her mooring. I was going to leave the motel room to check. I decided however, it wouldn't make a very good honeymoon memory (kind-of like cheating on your wedding night.) That was back in 1975. Today we live on a 40 sailboat and have for the past 10 years. We still like to sail to Catalina but it isn't nearly as much fun as those days spent on the little Mac. The End.
I just stumbled across this video, don't understand why you don't have more views and comments. Audio could be better but amazing video! And cool sailing in not so nice conditions! I'd sail with you anyday.
Glad to see people not afraid to sail these boats. I got a San Juan 21 and love it. Got to be realistic with the winds and your skills but they are really well build boats. Had mine in some fierce weather and it did well.
Hope my Venture 25 can handle the same on the Great Lakes. Can get awful nasty out there. These Venture/MacGregor boats do have a good reputation. Great sailing and video, thanks.
Naill biting from this end....feeling tense and wet just watching it....could not quite make out the audio explatives when the main needed dropping...but sure to experience it myself earlier in the season out of Prince Rupert this summer/autumn...making sure to get to shore before the October weather in the straits and channels. Great description of the reality fishers and sailors meet in their experience. Exploring the coastal inlets before further climate changes raise the shorelines and marshlands inland habitats, Shudders to you. Cheers
The boat does pretty well in heavy weather. The hull hasn't been reinforced, but it needed a chainplate for the backstay. The double reefed main and storm jib does have more weather helm than normal. I put a 3rd reef in the main after the camera batteries died, but it doesn't perform well upwind like that.
i have heard that every skipper has "two boats" one the one he sails in calm weather and the the same one sailing in high winds and the chop...I have been told to get to know both
Great vid! I’ve got a much smaller Precision 18 with a custom hanked-on 80% jib and also added a second reef to the mainsail. Slowly been building my comfort level and pushing the boat harder…
I'm about to buy a 1966 Venture 21 (similar hull and keel) and have been trying to find out if it will handle rough weather like this. Did you re-inforce the hull or anything else or can stock McGregors take real sailing like this on the ocean? Nice storm jib, any weather helm with that set up-up on the double reefed main? Any idea what the wind speed was in the video? Also, how does she handle in a following sea of that size? Thanks for any help. Nice video!
I had one years back, and she sailed very well. Be sure that the drop keel is fastened, should you have a knocked down. Great little boat for the money.
Which motor size you would recommend for this boat? I purchased the same sailboat and would like to know should I go with long foot or short? And do you know what is recommended motor size or max power i should have?
I've been very happy with the Honda 8.8 on it. I wouldn't go bigger. I'd definitely recommend a long shaft. I have a BF5 on a Pocket Rocket 22 and it can't push her to hull speed, but uses .25 GPH instead of the 8.8's .5 GPH. She's a lot more slippery than the Venture too.
Good on you for getting our there and testing your self. But you where nowhere near 30 knots. White caps are constant at around 25. It looked like you might have been in 15 knots. It feels like a lot more when your in a little C/B lake boat. I remember sailing in my Dad's O'day 20 CB boat in the SF bay in 20 knots and it felt like we were in the roaring 40's. Shooting off waves spray shooting over the back of the boat. Lots of fun.

@@saskiaisskra3240 I've only used the GoPro with a waterproof case, and the audio isn't good like that. We had to replace the stern chainplate with a beefier one.
Yeah, I bent the mast a few weeks earlier when a lower shroud came loose. I hadn't dropped the mast to straighten in out yet, and the opposite shroud still had slack in it.

I'm looking at my first pocket cruiser... MacGregors are in the runnning. Thanks for the vid, looks wild.
Great video. Shows that even a small and light boat can handle heavy weather with the right sail plan. Loved the cry of „Holy fuck!“. 👍
holy smokes! I hope I am never in that weather with my V22 but since all turned out well, it was amazing to watch! Thanks!
Thank you!
It was an exciting day!
Beautiful weather for a sail! Makes me wish I could take my vanguard out sailing

I’ve owned a Vn 23 cutter for 20 years and impressed with the weather she can take, that looked like fun!⛵️
2:44 You fucking legend, casually opening up a beer
I used to have a 21 mc greagor and i loved that boat i sailed in that in some narley weather never had any fear! great boats!
That's great sailing in those conditions single handed! Wow!
I wish I were out there right now. Exhilarating!
great video, thanks so much I had a Venture 2-22, hull 107, it was white and turquoise just loved it

Great little boat!
Damn, homie! You wild!!
Hint: Always Close the Hatches
Dude this is bad ass
Dude, you handled that well.
You just convinced me that I need to get a storm jib - and activate my SPOT SOS device. Looks pretty scary.
Very good video keep posting
awesome sailing
Shit. You're amazing sir.
Get it, man.
Small sailboats r so much fun! I prefer sailing my 23’ compac over our 50’ racer/cruiser! 👍
Did you really just crack open an Old Milwaukee...😂
It makes the bow jump higher
@@yamabiru4553 LOL, nothing like warm Old Milwaukee!
Course, yours was probably pretty cold out there
super cool, you have it all tricked out
Huge balls!
I had a MacGregor 22 went out 1 day in conditions very close to your video, well let me tell you once was enough
I just renovated a 72 Macgregor 22 or 24 I think. Not sure how to tell. Do I just measure tip of bow to stern?
That'll keep the blood pumping
i just boght a 22 mac, and i han to learn how to riggin the lines, please can you make a video about it?
wild man
It is best not to tie the reef lines round the boom. Use them to bunch the foot of the sail by tying the sail to itself.
It might be hard to see in the video, but the Main has an Attached Foot with a bolt rope. I'll keep it in mind, though. Cheers!
