Anthony Rapp has done a lot for Rent. From the first workshops to the final Broadway performance. He sold tickets from the box office, worked press junkets, did charity promotions, sang on the album, performed reunion concerts, and starred in the movie. Of all the performers, he is Rent.

Reyes Rodriguez I said ... of the performers. Jonathan Larson was not a performer in Rent. That is all I was saying. Of course Jonathan Larson was Rent, I wanted to look at those who carried his legacy beyond his untimely death. His family and one or two of the producers that kept the show going probably rank ahead of Anthony too but if you only look at performers then I contend it’s Mr. Rapp. Now, what say you?

I still have trouble accepting the cruel irony of Jonathan's death on the day the show was supposed to open (they did open that night, but they started out doing just a run through sitting at a table, but somewhere along the way, they just couldn't sit there anymore, and got up to do the show with the choreography, etc., is what I've read/seen/heard). It just isn't fair.
Rest in peace, Jonathan. If you only knew how much good you've done for our world...

@@Kinsella_Finn Jonathan refers to Jonathan Larson. He wrote RENT, and tragically passed away in the early morning hours of the first public performance of the show in 1996 from an aortic aneurysm due to Marfan Syndrome. He never got to see the phenomenan that RENT became.

I was bawling my eyes out the entire time. A lot of people don't know what it's like to be with a cast of people for so long, I've been in a musical theater show where it ran for 6 months (I would have died crying if I were in a show as long as this), and most people don't know the pain of a final performance and having to leave that stage for the last time. It's a final everything. It's your last call time, your last mic check, your last "thank you ten", your last "thank you five", your last places, your last performance of every song, and the last curtain call will having you crying like crazy. With a show as inspiring as this, it would be a sad, sad goodbye.

I've been involved with musical theater since 2001, playing trombone and keys in pit orchestras. I tend to do at least one show a year at various high schools and theater clubs and I feel this. And my shows usually only run for a week, I can't imagine how Anthony Rapp was feeling this night.

Of all the musicals I've seen, this is the one that resonates with me the most in that, having known some of the troubles of the characters like getting evicted or being broke or living out a death sentence, I know that dark place the characters draw their pain out from, tryna' light the dark with music and love and friendship and--faith.
When I go, I want whoever's there to be singing 'Seasons of Love'. :)

just to get something off my chest.. ive listened to this song every so often since i first heard it as a child in the 2000's. i didnt have much context for what it was about but i was attracted to the performances and emotion.
the older i get and the more i listen i find out more about myself why i like the song and why it speaks to me. breaking down a year into minutes seems like such a cheesy, simple, kitsch thing... but with all this uncertainty going on i add on the fact i was one of many people closing down business and i'm expecting my first child any day now. i spend each day trying to get some sort of loan or doing small time hustles to keep my savings from depleting.
it's 230am i sleep on and off and listening to this now finally made me cry, which is cathartic in itself, but also made me admit that i was scared about the future. i cant help it, but i dont want to waste each minute thinking about money or this and that. i want to be there for my son and his mother. the people who love and protect me. ive spent this entire year so far and many other years not measuring in love

I got to see RENT live back when I was 16 in 1998. It was the 2nd musical my mother ever took me to after Phantom. I loved it and still do to this day. I know it has quite a few flaws, but I don't think there's a musical out there that doesn't. It's easy to overlook the flaws when the musical itself is so amazing and inspiring. I can't listen to their signature song without sobbing. It's just so beautiful and brings me to a place in my head where I need to be, aka in the moment, understanding that each second of life is precious. This musical taught me that love heals all, back when my father had recently died of ALS and I was still emotionally recovering. I remember not wanting to upset my mother, so I tried my best not to cry during the sad moments of the musical, but it was hella hard. I also have the movie on dvd and now that I know there's a dvd of the final curtain call, I want that so badly! No matter how many people criticize the play, I will always love it. Thank you, Jonathan, for writing a musical that can speak to anyone and teach them that life is precious.
