    Love the video!
    So many people misunderstand that iCloud doesn't do file storage or backup, only sync. And that confusion can be dangerous, resulting in file loss. Why doesn't Apple resolve that confusion by offering real storage -- any thoughts?
    And how might one evaluate and compare third-party cloud storage/backup services, or external drives?

    • @mrjamesmay3548
      @mrjamesmay3548 Год назад +2

      Yes I agree and Time Machine can’t work with it either because most folks keep files stored in cloud. So technically no one has a back up. And because they only sell small storage I doubt many people have their’s backed up. Having said that.. I’ve never lost any information in the cloud and I suppose it’s less likely to have a hard drive failure than I am if I store it locally?

    • @ibrahimaysu8247

      Actually it’s a storage but not a backup service. People tend to misunderstand the difference between the concepts of a backup and a cloud storage with a sync service. iCloud doesn’t offer a backup solution for Mac computers at all. There is a product so called iCloud Backup for iPhone and iPad but it’s not even a real backup solution. Because, ex; when you sync your Photos with iCloud, then it excludes the photos from iCloud Backup. It’s nonsense. Therefore I use a Mac mini computer which is 7/24 up and running apart from my other Mac Book computers and my mobile devices such as iPhone, iPad. I use that Mac mini computer as a data host and I set it up as every single iCloud Service (Photos, iCloud Drive etc) as fully download the original copies on it. So I back it up to Time Machine and iDrive (3rd party cloud backup solution). So everything in my iCloud storage is backed up to the local external disk (Time Machine) and also to the 3rd party cloud backup storage. I mean I keep at least two separated and independent backup copies of my iCloud storage in that way.

    Joel, thank you for all your videos. Attempting to get 46,000 photos and 3000 videos to an external hard drive through my Mac. On my desktop where my system library is it says in eligible and has a cloud with a slash through it. I am stuck I don’t know what to do next or what this means. I cannot find it on the Apple site.

    Hi Mr. Feld. I've heard in lots of your videos that Icloud could be used as a sort of Backup for all our photos/video, but that Icloud is not supposed. and created for this use. But why? If I got 100gb and don t have a backup on the ssd but I pay for a monthly plan of 200gb Icloud, why shouldn't continue?
    Which are the motivation to let me backup also on external disk?

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  5 месяцев назад +1

      Hi @cosimop1539!
      I think it's important to understand and define the meaning of "Backup". I can see this word having different meanings based upon different scenarios.
      According to Apple, iCloud Photos isn't backed up within the "iCloud Backup". It's synced to the cloud and if you delete a photo or video, you have "X" amount of days to recover it, but if you don't recover it within that timeframe, it's deleted forever.
      So is that truly a backup? To some it is, some it isn't.
      Not sure if you've watched my other videos that discuss backup specifically, but I'll link below for reference:
      iCLOUD BACKUPS - WHAT you NEED TO KNOW when it comes to backing up PHOTOS, iPHONES and your devices!
      ruclips.net/video/7ep9pREplD8/видео.html
      How to BACKUP iCLOUD PHOTOS! Options for your Mac, iPhone and iPad! Cloud or No Cloud!
      ruclips.net/video/pWZZlYU62ts/видео.html
      For me, I sync all of my photos using iCloud from my iPhone to my Mac. My Mac is then using an external drive to backup to Time Machine which means that if a photo gets deleted from iCloud on my iPhone or Apple Photos on my Mac, it will still live on the Time Machine backup located on the external hard drive. It's just another local safety net having all of my photos/videos downloaded to a local hard drive that is not in the cloud.
      I hope that makes sense!
      THANK YOU so much for watching! It is appreciated more than you know!

      @@Learnwithjoel Hi Joel, very apprecciating your help. I' ve followed all your talk and I come back to the point, why I start looking at your videos. I had 200gb plan, almost full, so I was in the dividing point, or a bigger(to much big and expensive for my use) or backup all I got on an ssd, and delete everything from icloud, gaining back my 200gb but loosing the timeline of photos and photos themselves cause on ssd not. I haven t still decide, in midtime I'm trying to recover some space deleting biggest videos(passing them on an external ssd) but I'm stuck. Way to much 2 tb and 10 euro for month for my use, but...problably is the best choice to have all the timeline on my smarthpone. And...once that 2tb finish? I should create a new library and passing everything on an ssd removing all the 2tb from icloud? So in this view could it be a good option to start removing now the 200 gb and practising the merging library ?(do I explain myself ?hope you understand) Thank you very very much for your help

    Very cool videos. Thank you. I would like to clarify about the family subscription. Do I understand that, for example, a plan where there is 200 GB, these gigabytes are returned to all users of the family, and if someone takes 150 GB, then for all other parts 50 GB. Or will everyone get 200 GB for personal use?

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  Год назад

      Fantastic question @Jugin27!
      If you invite others to the Family Sharing, everyone is all collectively sharing the data storage. So if there are 4 people sharing and one person uses 150GB out of the 200GB, that only leaves 50GB for the remaining 3 people!
      I use Apple Family Sharing a lot as I have a family of 6 and it has it's pros and cons!
      I should really do a video on Family Sharing!

    Thats why i love andoid phones and google. My iphone is just my secondary phone. Things are so much more seamless with android. And so much less confusing like why cant you just make icloud the id account and just sync all the data to it when you know that when you make an apple id with a gmail account you cant sync the gmail to you iphone. Why do you need this confusion? Apple users be like oh but the ecosystem bla bla. I have android and imac and ios and windows and trust me no one does it better than google. I use google for my iphone. Calender notes apps everything.

    So? Getting bigger iCloud subscription will not reduce the file size on my iPhone? Do I need iPhone with 1tb storage or iCloud with 1 tb storage when I have 128gb iPhone

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  Год назад +1

      Great question @tradepandey420! I would say it depends.
      There is one setting that you can turn on within your iPhone to optimize the storage locally for you Photos and videos, but that's about it. I have a video that talks about this that I will link below for reference.
      Storage is FULL! - How to OPTIMIZE FILES and FIX your STORAGE PROBLEMS on Macs, iPhones and iPads
      ruclips.net/video/VhGG6goINBM/видео.html
      The big thing is that iCloud is more designed to sync information and often more times than not, users will delete something off their iPhone thinking that it will still be on iCloud, but that's not how it works.
      As far as what iCloud storage option to get when you have a 128GB iPhone? I always tell users to get equal to what the phone is and then when you're approaching the limit of iCloud storage, then just move up to the next tier if needed. No need to pay for a bunch of storage that you're not using yet!

    It's a shame Apple doesn't let you pick your services in a bundle; i'm in a family of 2 and just need the storage for foto's and music; don't need arcade or TV

      Hi @TheMotb91!
      Have you looked at Apple One subscription from Apple? When you subscribe to this, you can choose different services to sync. You exclude Arcade and Apple TV.
      I will say though that prices together can sometimes be cheaper even if you don't use the services...
      All of these subscription prices add up!

      OK, I still don’t understand this. I have one terabyte of space on my phone. I am using 2 TB of space in the cloud I removed a bunch of photos in the albums off of my phone, but yet they still remain on my iPad if the iCloud essentially mirrors my phone then how can I be using 2 TB of space in the cloud on a one terabyte phone?

  • @LazyJones
    @LazyJones Год назад +2

    There is no "button" to force a sync but if you pull up the photos page, as you would when pulling down to refresh a web page, it will force a resync so you don’t have to wait

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  Год назад +1

      I love the tip @LazyJones!
      I swear that works most of the time, but I have a stubborn iPad that it just doesn't seem to do that with. It says synced within Photos app, but if you go into the iCloud Settings within Photos, it shows not being synced for several minutes.
      Either way, definitely something to try! Thanks for suggesting!

    One thing that frustrates me with iCloud is I have moved over to the 6TB option and I want to use iCloud as a repository for files I want to access from different Macs which all have 1TB hard drive space. The second I upload footage to my iCloud drive on my Mac Studio, my Macbook Pro automatically starts downloading it and eating up space on the MBP. Then I have to manually go in and right-click and remove downloads. I just wish Apple would give us the option to upload whatever files we want in the cloud drive and then manually decide if we want a file/folder to automatically download or set it to manually download files as needed.

    • @Learnwithjoel

      Hi @30DayFilmmaker!
      I 100% agree! Even with the option for "Optimize Mac Storage", it will still download the files. According to Apple, files will be removed and offloaded after 30 days when not in use, but I think there's definitely room for improvement here on Apple!
