Hi Joel , your video was 🔥. At last someone explained how it works really :) I had to setup the shared library a while ago for my wife and 2 kids. On a side note , subscribing to the 200 GB iCloud+ to share the storage but using an individual Apple Music subscription is not easy at all. With the Apple one that is really expensive, buying what I needed was a challenge. Apple One individual gives only 50 GB, I wanted 200 GB for the whole family.

Thanks! I just increased my iCloud capacity, uploaded all my backed up photos from my PC, and set up shared libraries. I was hoping to be able to have my wife pull photos from the shared library and move them to her personal library. From your explanation, it looks like that is not possible since I set up the library and contributed all the photos. Thanks for the explanation. I wasn’t hearing or seeing that so clearly in other references.

Joel, this is the content I was looking for before turning on a Shared Library. I have questions about backups: you mentioned backing up your photos a couple times. What method do you use for this? I'm guessing you tell Mac Photos to keep originals of the entire library, and then you back that up? When you have a shared library (and are the owner), will all the originals from that stay on the Mac as well? Any insight much appreciated. Thanks
I have 400k photos on my iPhone and if I want to make a shared library with my wife and me, does this mean that iCloud will make a new shared library with the whole 400k photos? Asking this to know how the iCloud space will be affected.
Great video Joel. I’m considering moving me and my wife’s libraries from Google Photos into iCloud Photos. We’ve each got 50,000 photos, mostly of our kids, and likely a large majority of them are duplicates that we’ve been sharing back and forth with each other over the years. I’d love to get you explanation of how iCloud treats duplicates in Shared Libraries, and any best practices for making the switch from Google Photos to iCloud Photos shared libraries.
Is there a way to backup only the shared library from one account (when using multiple accounts on the same mac) or will each account need to backup the entire set of both libraries (rather than just the personal library) using Time Machine?
Great question @kayjava7607! I was hoping that when Apple released iOS 18 that it would have and show keywords in Photos on iPhones and iPads, but it does not. The good news is though that keywords will be search on an iPhone and iPad! But the bad news is this requires a Mac to actually create keywords. If you have a Mac and create keywords within Apple Photos, those will sync to your iPhone and iPad (assuming you're syncing with iCloud Photos) and you will be able to find them by searching for the words on your iPhone Photos app. Thank you so much for taking your time to watch this video. What happens to the shared library photos when you switch apple id on your iPhone and keep all photos on the device? Will they stay on the device together with the personal library photos?
I have a question, not shared library related but related to I cloud photos. When you choose to use i cloud it sent the video or pic to the cloud and only leaving a thumbnail on your photos app in your phone, is there s way to exclude certain videos or photos from being offloaded, since sometimes i have videos I want to be able without internet
How do i check what ive shared with people on iphone, i accidentally shared some personal photos with randoms trying to delet it how do i check who im sharing with on iphone
Hi @anthonysiguenza5529, So you shared the entire library with random people?! If you're on a Mac, open Apple Photos and go into the settings. The third tab should say "Shared Library". Here you can see anyone you've invited to the shared library and remove them if needed. On an iPhone (iOS18+), open settings and go to Apps > Photos > Shared Library. Here you can manage who you've shared with as well. Thank you so much for taking your time to watch this video. It is greatly appreciated! If this video has been helped you, I would be honored if you would consider sharing it with your social media network and expressing your gratitude for its assistance. Hi, Joel great video. I have a doubt. Can we have shared library with members from different country. I am planning on starting one with my family but next year i will be moving to a different country, what will happen to the shared library when I change my region in my Apple ID? In fact I was planning on sharing my iCloud storage as well with my family. Will I be able to continue to share my iCloud even after moving to a different country? Also related to this I am an Apple Music subscriber, what will happen to my Library and playlist once I change my region? Thanks.
I want to share all of my old family photos with family members and keep the information (i) that I have input for each photo. Will it keep the information when shared? I see that it doesn’t have that information in Shared Album.
Hi @KarenskaJazz! Great question! You are correct, this information would not sync or show up on a photo that is in a Shared Album, you can only comment on the items in there. However if you put photos and videos in a "Shared iCloud Photo Library" it will show up on all devices for you and other people...but it depends on where you're putting the info... If you're on a Mac and you get the "Info" on a photo/video, you can add a Title, Caption and Keyword, but on an iPhone or iPad, you can only add a Caption. If you write something in the Caption, it will visually show on all parties devices. Now if you add a Title or Keyword to a photo/video from Apple Photos on your Mac, it will sync to other devices on any iPhone or iPad, but the key is you need to do a search for the keyword or title. So for example if you add the keyword "Vacation" to a photo within Apple Photos on a Mac, that keyword Vacation will sync to your iPhone/iPad, but in order to see it, you need to do a search in the Photos app on the devices for that word Vacation. Then it will show you any photo/video tagged with that keyword. This can be pretty helpful! I hope that helps! THANK YOU so much for watching! It is appreciated more than you know! 1. how to add multiple pics to shared lib after they have been clicked. 2. if member A wants to exit shared lib but member B want to transfer pics shared by A to their personal lib. is there a work around?
Question: If I join someone’s shared library, can I still create my own separate shared library to share with other people. I read that each account can have only 1 shared library.
Great question @kayjava7607, When you first start using iCloud Photos, that is your own personal library. You can create one additional library to put photos from your personal into the shared and share that library with others, but it is true that you can only link your account with one shared library. So if someone shared a library with you and you accepted, you would not be able to create your own shared library. You would have to leave theirs first and then you would be able to create one. Shared libraries are very risky. When people delete your photos you loose them. I highly recommend a backup of your photos before putting them in a shared library!
When people delete photos from the shared library they go back to the personal library of the person who made the upload and are not permanently deleted, Apple says this on the official website
Hey @mrCastrinho_! Can you send a link to where Apple says this on their website? From what I see, they say the following: "Items that you and other participants delete are placed in the Recently Deleted album, where they remain for 30 days and then are permanently deleted. You can restore deleted items to the Shared Library before they’re permanently deleted. If another participant deletes a photo or video that you contributed, you receive a notification and continue to receive notifications every 7 days".
