For sweet popcorn it's not enough to sprinkle the popcorn with sugar as it will all fall off and you'll end up with most sugar on the bottom and tasteless popcorn. It's better to heat up the oil until it's really hot, then stir in sugar and let it caramelize for 10 seconds while stirring, then add the kernels, turn of the heat and shimmy the pot regularly. Tastes like the sweet popcorn you get in cinemas! Fun fact: in Germany we usually have sweet popcorn and I was mindblown when I realized in my twenties that the popcorn I saw in American movies and soaps is actually not sweet!
Wow! That's so cool! I'm American and I have had sweet popcorn occasionally, but most of ours is salty with butter, and I am just learning from your comment that other countries do sweet popcorn instead! Very cool, thanks for sharing, Molly 😄❤
Your videos remain as my absolute comfort moments throughout the day. I just love sitting down to actively rest and feeling like having a chat with you on a busy or having it in the background while working around the apartment. For some reason, the food shop videos are so comforting haha. Thank you so much for the work you and Alex (and the rest of the team) put into the videos, it is noticeable and much appreciated! (Oh, not to mention the amazing recipe ideas as well ^^) Much love from a very stressed law student in Maastricht ☺️
The discussion about including the “pantry staples” or not is interesting. I don’t think I’ve thought about it before. I think I’m kinda in the middle. When it’s basics like oil or some spices etc I totally agree. Most people have it. No need to include it in a budget shop calculation. But when it expands to leftover frozen fruit, boxes of rice or pasta, leftover vegetables etc these aren’t staples to me anymore. This is actual food and I personally do not have leftover food from previous weeks lying around. Part of being on a budget for me means my spending is a lot more calculated. I tend to only buy what I need for that week’s recipes and no more. No impulse buys. No leftovers. Except things you kinda have to buy in bulk like oil, sugar, flour. But other then that not really. 🤷♀️ I think it’s because my personal way of budgeting means not having different meals on different days? Like when I’m meal planning I pick a breakfast/ lunch / dinner for the week. And eat the same thing everyday for a week. So a box of pasta is enough for dinner for a week with no leftovers for example. Part of the reasons I love these videos is you sometimes show how you buy something to be used in multiple different recipes in the same week. One item but more variety. I find those ideas super useful! So it’s been interesting to think about and to see it included in this video for the first time. I really appreciate the obvious effort you went through to work it all out for us. And I agree, you absolutely should use up what you have and not waste just for the sake of a video. Keeping track and telling us is more then enough of a gesture. Thank you! 👍
I literally just pulled some focaccia from one of your videos out of the oven then I saw you'd posted. I get so excited every time you post! Thanks for being an inspiration (especially since you're one of the more realistic RUclipsrs out there).
Thank you for these videos, they are helpful and fun to watch! Re: the 'extra's' discussion: it seems fair to use things that are leftover from last week but maybe you could share what's leftover from the budget shop at the end of the week too, which you will carry into the next week? It would be interesting to see whether that evens it out or if you use it all up for the budget meals week.
Yes I was thinking this! Though I ate extras we definitely had food left from our food shop! We had half a cabbage, Brussels sprouts, a few apples and a couple bananas, yoghurt, spring onions, loads spinach and loads of lentils! So thanks for reminding me of this because this probably adds up!
Oh! I already commented but I just got to the end of the video. I’m actually really looking forward to the cupboard clear out challenge . My mom use to do the “everything but the kitchen sink” stew which was never the same twice 😂 And if I could request a challenge it would be something like “10 ingredient/ 10 meals” or something like that. Using the same basic ingredients in a variety of ways. Because that kind of advice helps people on a budget a lot. 👍
Thanks a million for this, food prices are horrendous and this is just so helpful. I love love love it and cant WAIT for the next! Amazing content!! I will copy it right off! Also can not wait for reno videos!
I'm not vegan but have watching some your past food videos this week . Been out today and brought smoked tofu, so I'm now super chuffed to see this as an ingredient. Food shopping tomorrow for the rest on the list. First time trying tofu.
I went veggie 5 years ago and had never had tofu, now it's one of my staples and I adore it. It gets a bad rep in the west for being flavourless and sponge like. That's mainly because people under cook and under season it. My tip to you is if you want a more meaty texture then cook it for longer.
If it's the Tofoo brand, that is sooooooo nice in a creamy pasta. Adds a smokiness the way bacon would (so pigs also much prefer it 😉) so just cut it into small thin rectangles like little pices of bacon (idk like 1-1.5cms and maybe half cm thick?). Nice and smokey!
Made this tonight, a winner in my books. Looking at your finished meal think I may have skimmped a little on the kale, going to use more next time yummy, thanks so much
This video has inspired me so much! Recently I have been making a big batch of soup at the weekend and having that for breakfast each day, I just microwave it in a mug! I find it more filling than a smoothie and less faff. This week is spiced carrot and lentil 😍 thank you for all these amazing ideas, it is really helpful ❤️
MADDIE!!!!! On Monday’s intro…you looked like an absolute angel! You’re always very pretty but…not to get weird or anything but you looked stunning! Love, love, LOVE to see your cooking videos again! Also love the budget shopping! We so need it! Blessings & Hugs! 🧡🌻
Nutritional yeast is so versatile. I make a "chicken" bouillon with it for soups and also add it to a tofu scramble. Amazing how it can taste like chicken, egg, and cheese at the same time.
The popcorn method you’re referencing is on the back of most popcorn kernel packets! My mum also taught me when I was a kid, so I think it’s just the ‘known’ way to do it 😅
Growing cress with seeds is super easy. Unfortunately it doesn't regrow once it's been cut. It's a very simple plant. It made me so sad when I found that out because I love cress and loved the idea of it regrowing.
I just find these videos incredibly helpful. I’m in Australia and grocery prices are soaring, and I’m always challenging myself to create new meals on a budget. These videos are always so practical! Thankyou Madeleine! X
That was absolutely cracking. 👏👏👏 I do appreciate a detailed breakdown which factors in the store cupboard, which isn't magically restocked after all! Lovely satiating recipes too.
I love your videos so much! As someone who is unsatisfied with a boring meal but sometimes lack the inspiration and effort to cook and being a student so looking for budget friendly these kind of videos give me exactly what I need😊
Love Crispy Kale. That looks really good. Love popcorn. So easy to do on the stove. I Love lentils too. That mushroom and toast looks so good. I don't cook mine too long. Just long enough. I want to be plant based. And I'm on a budget. Trying to figure it out. Everything looked really yummy.
You have inspired me so much. I went vegan in Nov 22 and have really enjoyed my new way of eating. I have tried every diet and fad going and have never sustained it. You have helped me completely change the way I view food. I feel the best I’ve ever felt and my new way of eating is slowly trickling down to my family which I love. My Children LOVE Alex’s bread, which I bake for them twice a week ! Thank you Madeleine and Alex. ❤
I love these budget videos but for fun (and to eat/live vicariously through you!) I would love to see the opposite.- a super spendy and lavish week of eating M&S or Waitrose food! x
I really appreciate all the time and effort you guys put into these videos, It really does bring it home its not expensive to eat healthily and it doesnt have to be all processed foods !!
The beans and greens with rice and yogurt, reminds me of Palestinian food I’ve eaten growing up. Soupy veggie combos and rice with yogurt is very nostalgic to me.
I loved the video! Great inspiration and the extras really didn’t bother me. Everyone has extras in the pantry and fridge. It’s completely normal. Thank you for your time in putting this together
I always enjoy the weekly budget videos. And now in these times, they are especially helpful, even though I'm not from UK. Thank you and thank you for linking the recipes. I do have a suggestion though. Can you, at the end of the week, show what was left from the bought items?
I just checked out your 10 minute mac and cheese recipe. Thank you for the suggestion to substitute tahini for the cashews. I'm planning on trying the recipe this week.
Every dish looks so yummy! My favorite thing to put on avocado toast is balsamic reduction. Vegan food is the best food. Thanks for the great recipe ideas.
Hi Madeleine, I loved this video - tbh your videos are my favorite thing to watch on here, they feel very positive, relaxing and uplifting :) I have been practising baking my own bread (it's life-changing!!) but am struggling with getting the loaf to rise properly, it spreads and flattens a lot whilst proofing. Any tips to get a more compact shape? Thanks xx
M., I'm from California and in the winter all the citrus fruits are available. Besides naval Oranges, there are Grapefruits, Mandarin Oranges, Myers Lemons for fresh lemonade. I feel like I gorge citrus this time of the year.
Love your videos. I’m vegetarian but eat lots of vegan food so find your videos brilliant. Can you do a weekly budget grocery shop for Sainsburys as it would be great to get some more ideas as I seem to end up with a routine of meals.
Hi Madeleine! Thank you for this great video!!! I make popcorn exactly the same way except I don't do the 30-second thing and it's perfect every time! Also, my measurements are 1/4 cup canola oil and 1 heaping cup kernels and I love it like that. I love coconut oil in popcorn too!
People often say curry takes forever, mine takes about 15 min and it's one of my 'can't be bothered' recipes. I just fry a bit of curry paste, add the veg for a minute, add coconut milk and fresh coriander stems, put a lid on it, simmer until the veg are done. Top with yoghurt, pickle and the coriander leaves.Turns out really creamy and thick, great with pumpkin, cauli and carrots.
I personally love to make sweet popcorn with powdered/ icing/ confectioners sugar! Sprinkle when the popcorn is hot and it does stick (works even better if you used oil or butter)
We grow a lot of fruit during the summer and freeze for the winter, so we eat just as much in the winter as in the summer. We love a compote for breakfast with yoghurt or to top oatmeal. Xx
I’ve got a vegan protein powder to recommend! It’s an Aussie brand called Botanika Blends. I’m not even vegan and they’re my go-to protein powders. That and Macro Mike; they both ship worldwide!
The vegan egg was really Good! I forgot the cress even though it was on my shopping list so I had it with some sweet potato and carrot hash for lunch...so good! Just did our 2 weekly Asda shop and have 3 of your recipes on the list to try - We managed £52 for 2 weeks for two - would have been less if Asda had a world foods aisle like Sainsburys or Tesco but Asda only has a very tiny section. One of the problems i'm having is i love buying all the vegetables but i worry about them going off because i am cooking for just myself! do you have any tips to keep the vegetables fresh? Thanks!🙂
I don't know if you find this but sometimes smoothies (esp with fruits) send my blood sugar really high and then it crashes and I feel really hungry! It's annoying as it is a great way to get lots of goodness in. I thinking eating it with some protein avo toast does help with this xx

Hi Madeleine! I just found your channel and I've been loving it ❤ Your hair is very similar do mine and I wanted to ask you how to you style it to look so pretty! I still didn't find THE product 🤭
No hate or judgment but you really should look at how you label your videos to make sure they’re accurate. As I couldn’t have taken £16 to Tesco and made the exact meals you did as I don’t have those extras in my pantry.
Heyy.. I have been trying to get the Mac and cheese recipe for some time now but I think there is some sort of issue with the website.. it's unable to load 😓
One of the main differences with Veganism and being a non-Vegan is that for non-Vegans, it's more expensive to be healthy, and for Vegans, it's more cheap to be healthy.

We call sweet popcorn "Kettle Corn" here, since I assume the traditional way to cook it is in a kettle!
The sweet popcorn is really good, if you add a sprinkle of salt on top of it after putting it in the bowl! 🥰 It’s possible to have it all!! 😂
Iam not even vegan, but i love your videos and you make me want to be vegan or at least have a few vegan meals a week 🥰🥰
This is amazing!
Same! So healthy.
Same! Im not even vegan either! But I get so inspired!
Definitely want to try these recipes. Trying to eat better, more vegan meals to cut down the food bill
You can do it! Korean food in particular is REALLY good veganised because of all the beautiful marinades and sauces.

I’d love to see you do a what’s left and pantry week, see how long you can go with out going to the shops and how inventive you can be
Hahaha classic should have waited for the end for this exact thing being announced 🤦🏼♀️😆
Maddie cooks just like Nigella Lawson!
Thank you for these videos, they are helpful and fun to watch! You guys gotta try tempeh too! It’s soo flavourful when marinated 😍😍😍 I was hesitant at first, but now it’s tofu 2.0 for me 🥰
This video has inspired me so much! Recently I have been making a big batch of soup at the weekend and having that for breakfast each day, I just microwave it in a mug! I find it more filling than a smoothie and less faff. This week is spiced carrot and lentil 😍 thank you for all these amazing ideas, it is really helpful ❤️
Popcorn with drizzled vegan chocolate (milk or dark) on them and sea salt is amaaaazing 😫❤️
Omg I am trying this!
one of Alex's main purposes in this relationship is making you freshly baked bread
Of course it’s why I married him
Hey Madeleine would be fab if you did a slow cooker meal inspiration video ❤ great vid as always xx
Alex is being so funny in the background. I love the way he makes you laugh. My husband’s sense of humor is what first attracted me to him.

Came across your channel today and love it! I'm not vegan but am really inspired by your recipes.your. Mac cheese is on our agenda this week!
Some easy and delicious dishes Maddie. Alex making faces in the background makes us smile. Hugs and love ❤

Thanks for all your yummy looking meals and recipes. I've become hooked on your videos. Greetings from Germany.
This came at the best possible time. I am STRUGGLING HARD with budget meals. Thank you.
I really appreciate all the time and effort you guys put into these videos, It really does bring it home its not expensive to eat healthily and it doesnt have to be all processed foods !!

I loved the video! Great inspiration and the extras really didn’t bother me. Everyone has extras in the pantry and fridge. It’s completely normal. Thank you for your time in putting this together
Great recipes - I tried your winter veg gratin recipe last year, it was delicious 😍
Amazing video! Would you be able to do some “hidden veg” vegan recipes? My husband doesn’t like veg but I would like to eat more plant based foods 😂
You have to try nutritional yeast on your popcorn!! So yummy.
I always enjoy the weekly budget videos. And now in these times, they are especially helpful, even though I'm not from UK. Thank you and thank you for linking the recipes. I do have a suggestion though. Can you, at the end of the week, show what was left from the bought items?

these vids are my FAVORITE !! :D
You can add salt straight to the kernels of your popcorn at the beginning. It makes a difference.
Fantastic budget vegan meals Madeleine and love 🥰 this video and love 💕 Madeleine for sharing them and the inspiration.
Thank you for explaining how to do the popcorn! I was just putting it with oil in a cold saucepan with a fitted lid and turning the heat up high!
I will definitely be making that chickpea curry, but substituting other beans because my son isn't a fan of chickpeas but he loves curry!
People often say curry takes forever, mine takes about 15 min and it's one of my 'can't be bothered' recipes. I just fry a bit of curry paste, add the veg for a minute, add coconut milk and fresh coriander stems, put a lid on it, simmer until the veg are done. Put some nutritional yeast on top of fresh popcorn for some cheesyness it's so delicious 😋
I personally love to make sweet popcorn with powdered/ icing/ confectioners sugar! Sprinkle when the popcorn is hot and it does stick (works even better if you used oil or butter)
Hi Maddie! Could you share a recipe with mung beans someday? Thanks! Love you channel 💕
Second this I have some in my cupboard that have been there for ages 😭
Hi Madeleine! Thanks for sharing these. They look really great 😍
OMG that sandwich bread that Alex made for your egg & cress looks fabulous. Is it a different recipe than the one you’ve already posted?
We grow a lot of fruit during the summer and freeze for the winter, so we eat just as much in the winter as in the summer. We love a compote for breakfast with yoghurt or to top oatmeal. Xx
Thank you for this vid - I love this type of video for inspiration. Side note: how good is White Lotus?!
I absolutely love Sainsburys world food aisle its really cost effective compared to even the own brand stuff.
The way I make popcorn is by putting all the corn into the pan with oil (I think a use less oil than you and it works fine, in case you care for reducing that - although using less than needed will cause some of the corn not to pop) and stir it until all the corn turn into more of a light yellow colour, and then I close the pan, turn down the heat and just wait. :)
A good way to have sweet popcorn is to add icing sugar
An air popper without oil is even better! You can sprinkle nutritional yeast on it if you like
Would you make a video where you cook your favorite recipes that other vegan youtubers have created? :)
Thank you for this video. I am excited to try out loads of the recipes on your website. 😊
This might sound like a daft question, but how do i get your online cook book??
I love your videos, you and Alex are so adorable:)
Love what you did with the Thursday word
I always feel a green soothe is nutritious, I’ve got some regrown celery that I like to add , it has a stronger taste
I like these budget shops and meals videos, could you do one with recipes that don't require an oven?
Loved this video! More like this please.
Wow! Awesome! Thank you for the video!
#SaveSoil #ConsciousPlanet 🌱
Loved this video just made popcorn and followed your method. Was perfect yummy
I love eating a more vegetarian option, would like recommendations for how to minimize carbs (pasta, bread, white refine flora and sugars) for folks with insulin resistance. Am considering a vegan diet to help with arthritis too. Thank you
It's easy, just amp up the rest of your foods. It's not the cooking part that will be difficult, it's getting used to eating fewer carbs, and that's psychological work for sure, the hardest part. Good luck, you're taking care of your health and that's amazing!
As a vegan you make me want try new recipes
Kale on Mac?!!! That one stumped me!
Use icing sugar or powdered sugar for sweet popcorn
Pasta is also good with garlic and peanut butter.
Would love vegan weekly shop & meals videos on the theme of 'convincing vegan skeptics/fussy eaters'! Signed, an aspiring vegan endurance athlete (currently vegetarian)
I’m a fan of pink salt and black pepper popcorn 🍿
Hi Madeleine! I just found your channel and I've been loving it ❤ Your hair is very similar do mine and I wanted to ask you how to you style it to look so pretty! I still didn't find THE product 🤭
Can you put peanut butter for protein instead of protein powder?
Hey! Madeleine today is my birthday and I love your vlogs so so much you are my inspiration and I wish you reach 600K Subscribers very very soon!☺️❣️💫
Nutritional yeast on popcorn is incredible!
Trying this next time!
No hate or judgment but you really should look at how you label your videos to make sure they’re accurate. As I couldn’t have taken £16 to Tesco and made the exact meals you did as I don’t have those extras in my pantry.
Well done great video so consistent xxx
Also love this series
Can you show what’s left at the end of the week from what you bought please
Thankyou for your amazing video
Alex at the end 😂🤣. The little creep 😆
What are the sizes of your le creuset pots? I want to buy one but I'm not sure about the size
What are the "sheets" over the oven for? This kinda scares me thinking of fire 🙈
TeamRH vegan protein powder! Millionaire Shortbread 🤤
Heyy.. I have been trying to get the Mac and cheese recipe for some time now but I think there is some sort of issue with the website.. it's unable to load 😓
