- XCOM Enemy Unknown is called that because your biggest enemy is a lack of information. WIll this 90% hit chance shot fail? Who knows! Will five countries leave the Xcom project on the same turn? Who knows! Is the campaign objective to capture an alien? Who knows!

The worst part of the tutorial, is once you've been through it once, if you play it again, you see all the better points you could place your tropes if Bradford would just shut up and let you lead the attack

Finally. Seeing Oboe absolutely die at XCOM is great.
Now get Enemy within and enjoy dying on the Newfoundland mission.
Also XCOM 2 has a way cooler character customation. Also you canonically lose in the XCOM lore so uh, well done on getting the canon ending

I know right, despite laughing my balls off, every time he ignored research or blew up the aliens or failed to properly equip his troops out with a dedicated medic/doctor with a full stack of kits i was crying inside a little
I hate turn based games, but love the Xcom series for some reason, every time i start a new game after a year or so away i have so much fun setting it all up, eventually i realize how boring/tedious it can become and leave it for next year, but massive fun while it lasts
I know he makes the enemy commanders from the Star Wars sequel trilogy look brilliant.

I don't know why watching people in partial cover firing at aliens in full cover triggers me so much
His soldiers were badasses, but when the commander himself is putting his soldiers in those situations, there's a problem.

Because I barely put soldiers in half cover in the game. I knew early on that anything less than full cover is a lie by the devs and did a slow and careful purge of any enemy groups.

Never knew you could play this game as an inside agent for the Aliens.
The Character Creator-Part is very relatable. I spent hours downloading around a hundred mods for Xcom2, creating lots of characters and then realizing i am a noob at the game when the first giant Advent-Mechs killed my whole squad with rockets.

Love this game. It's hard as fuck on anything past easy though. I still wonder if it's possible to beat the game without losing a single member state
Finished the game on hardcore hard mode without casualties and no country lost. You got to be lucky with missions and threat levels though. Once you get to a certain point in the game it's as simple as normal. Couldn't beat it on hardcore impossible, I couldn't get past the fishing village mission, there are just 2 many crystalids spawning when you enter the ship. I tried with sacrificing only one but then I missed the appropriate fire power during the retreat. Loosing just one of your guys before will surely result in a auto-lose, because you are going to need the level up skills. Assault rifles are completely useless exept to finish, and grenades are the only way to go.
I did it on normal difficulty (enemy within), didn't even lose a rookie during the base defense
This game's design is so subtly brilliant. The way it punishes the player for scouting by giving any spotted aliens (not aliens that spot you, any that _you_ spot during _your_ turn) a free movement turn to get into cover, _during the player's turn?_ Pure chef kiss. The most tactically sound way to play is literally to move as little as possible each turn, and hope the enemy bumble across you first during their own next turn. Because if they do? Then they take their bonus half-turn then and there, usually not even firing, but rather just running into cover for you to gun down or grenade.
So inspired. Such realism. Accurate reflection of combat ebb and flow. Much tactics, such strategy, very plausible, wow.
This is exactly how I play XCOM.

i found it baffling that he was doing missions everywhere but S.A. Argentina panicked and almost ceased to exist and Brazil was like "yeah, we're good" for a while.

It was so common to lose that the game developers made it the cannon ending for XCOM 2
I hate turn based, strategy games, i really do, but i secretly love Xcom, i got it cheap thinking it was an alien shoot em up, was disappointed on that "tutorial" but stuck with it, now i load in a few times a year and spend a week furiously saving humanity, it's my go to bordem/stress relieving game

Oboe now you've played through once, how about you take what you've learned from that and apply it to a next playthrough, maybe make that a live stream & then video and find out what happens see how far you get 😉
Research & unlock, you should have dedicated doctors who can move around in a larger area, a medic for quick heals, Assault with dash & shoot armed with a shotty & stunner, 2 snipers with 2 seperate set ups one that can scope pretty much the whole map, the other than can hover/fly into position, & forget the Heavys until you have the pulse tech & robo armor upgraded thats when they become juggernauts!!
I hate turn based games, but love Xcom and after the learning curve it gets really fun, it would be good too see how you'd fair now

Now you've dabbled in XCOM you should try Gears Tactics. Pretty much just a gears version of this with customisation for dayss
You're not supposed to win this game easily, it's meant to be a sort of replayable roguelike that hates the player.
Microprose wanted XCOM to be a geopolitical intrigue simulator with strategy and tactical elements so that instead of gathering resources you have to interact with the nations who do through the council. The reason why they scrubbed that and converted it into a simple score=money mechanic is because that was the kind of games people played and wanted to buy.

When they tried to really implement it in Apocalypse was a disaster that basically killed the franchise. The features in XCOM3 Apocalypse are great, you can spy on factions, patrol the city down to individual buildings, raid corporations, gather evidence they collude with aliens. You had different vehicles to patrol the city that you could customize, load with different agents and operators. You had to counterattack aliens in the city, in other dimensions and inside of the populations mind...
The problem is it never worked, it crashes and you cannot really use any of the features in a way that matters before the code starts disintegrating.
XCOM is a videogame but it has personality disorders...
