Beaglerush got me into strategy games in the first place. It wasn't a genre I really understood, but watching L&I and the highlight videos something clicked. In a roundabout way it led me down the path to actually being a GM for several ttrpg groups (shoutout to Lancer) where I could run whole squads of enemies to terrorize my players with

02:32 I took the bait of the Large ship on my first playthrough and while I got about 75% through it judging by other playthroughs of this mission, it made me lose almost my whole squad. I got my first terror mission back to back which I failed miserably and it was a long way of recovery until I felt comfortable taking UFOs on again. Also, glad I am not the only one who cringes at the default aerial combat balancing but I was too lazy to change it on my 2nd playthrough

The Aliens Aggression towards you makes a lot more sense to me know as the first time I faced an Ethereal on Long War 1 was on a bomb mission and I was like "Why would the Ethereal Hive mind sacrifice one of their own to ensure mission success?" and when you told me about the aggression caused by me over killing them each month, it made a lot more sense. They hated me so much for kicking their asses that they are willing to send fellow Ethereals to their deaths in suicide bombing missions just to make sure I don't succeed.

It is so rare to find an actual XCOM EW Long war content creator these days. I'm glad I subscribed.
Besides that, I love rocketeer/archer with my life. I use squad motion tracker mod, a lot of battle scanners, concealment scout, and edited ini value to increase rocket/grenade/mine range beyond visual range. I always start engagement by dropping bomb on alien pack for damage/red fog debuff.

I think what makes Long War 1 works wayyy better than Long War 2 is how the game was designed. Like, you're supposed to be this really big military waging an open war against the aliens. It really feels like you're fighting an actual "war" where both sides continue to adapt.
You can think the same type of aliens having more HP as them getting better armor(that you can't see) or maybe they're fielding the "better" version as they see you as a bigger threat. Like you don't want to spent that million dollar missile just to take out a bunch of people with bows, but once they use gauss rifle, now it becomes a lot more appealing to use that more expensive munition.

Xcom LW is also my favorite game of all time. I bought it on launch at to be honest shelved it after beating the campaign. A couple of years later I came across EnterElysium's video on the Long War mod. I installed the mod later that night and pretty much has been the main game I have played 90% of the time for the last 8 years or so. I just binged 92 episodes of Beaglerush's latest 2022 modded campaign that looks like he dropped soon after gaining MECs. But I'll tell you just watching his and others VODs improve my play to this day. Even with over 1k hours on my own campaigns I still enjoy playing and consuming Long War content. You mentioned AssaultCom and that'll probably be the next style I'll give a shot.
Noticed you doubt there will be a 3rd video but I'm still eager for more. After browsing your other content I'm also going to take a look at Starsector. Who knows maybe it'll take up the next 8 years.

Love the videos man. I do want to insist that you not being interested in Long War Rebalanced is more than likely a product of simply not being able to comprehend how all the changes in LWR congeals into one of the best Long War experiences I can think of. Just the removal of alpha striking alone makes battles so, so interesting. I've never seen a game more tuned towards anti-cheese, and it's absolute nirvana. And the aerial combat is quite a bit better. edit: fixes squadsight cheese aswell haha
The permanent positive or negative traits soldiers can get after battle, each class being even more fleshed-out and purpose-built than in LW1, the ability to send salvage teams in on crashed UFOs incase you don't have time/desire to do a UFO mission.
It doesn't get everything right, and it most certainly needs getting used to, but I reckon it'll be worth trying in earnest. Like I commented in your other video, I was legit a LW1 player only, and really poo-pood everything about LWR.

I think the only thing holding Long War back is the lack of random maps in XCOM 2012. There are some that are so seared into my consciousness as Places of Pain that I cannot stand ever seeing them again--Flooded Streets and the Bombed Highway come to mind instantly, but there would probably be more if I wasn't so good at repressing PTSD.

I fired up a game of Long War last month, and I was looking for vids just to see if anyone is still playing and I found yours. Thank you so much for making this, it feels great to know someone loves this mod enough to still make videos on it. However, I WILL NOT STAND for this anti-Rocketeer slander. Yes, some missions I don't need to fire a single rocket. But in others, a rocket down the middle is the only solution to a thorny tactical problem. And the second more than balances the first.
Some people don't like the rocket's awful accuracy. To them I say, "you mean you don't plan your moves in advance so you have a steadied Rocketeer ready when the enemy comes into LOS?"

Damn, you make me really wanna go back playing long war. I come back to it a lot. Cause it DOES feel like the game where i could not just spam safe and load, accept MOST mistakes and play it smoothly.
My current playthrough though is a bit stuck on classic (second) difficulty, i chose random soldier perks for some freaking reason. And decided that "huh progressively expensive satelites is a good idea m8" (why, WHY???!)
But angles and flanks feel like actual consistent way to reward/punish positioning, which isn't random.
If i get flanked, well, my fault, should've saved up a slot.
But the biggest problem for me is freaking air, despite having laz guns on my air support and usable consumables i just don't have enough air support. The air combar feels like literally the worst part of the game with little of control about it, when sometimes game just says "freak u and ur satelites in the arse, have fun having negative money!"
also long war and repearing gear is a match made in hell, with the way i play where usually most of my squad is damaged or killed most of the missions.
As for now, i have a love hate relationship with this game, and considering tweaking my current campain, if it's possible, or freaking starting from scratch couple of month or a year later.
I might have lost a campain with 50-100 hours sinked in it, and it's hard to accept, that i had to make different tech choices maybe, better managed airplane stuff.
Just when i hit psyonics, maaan.
I'll try to salvage my current campain.
Thank you for reminding why i absolutely love and despise that game at the same time.

As far as squad setups: I remember one drop on my first playthrough of LW. Landed medium, I KNEW it was a trap, A team was fatigued. Do I leave it?
Fuck no I've got four corporal rocketeers and an ITZ MEC. I hit the LZ and _FORTY_ EXALT immediately activate.

I respect your opinion but do enjoy LW2 more myself. However, there's a lot of LW1 features I wish came back, particularly the weapon variety where something like Squadsight vs Snap Shot is an equipment decision rather than a character progression one. I think the key difference between the feel of LW1 and LW2 is the mission timers. I feel like XCOM 1 can be a pretty slow and cheesy game if you want it to be, something that is absolutely rectified by the turn-to-turn urgency of XCOM 2. Great vid!
Also strongly recommend Long War of the Chosen if you haven't tried it already.

LW Rebalance is a vast improvement though. The global pod activation from nearby alerted aliens fixes the dominant 'one group at a time' meta which is the reason why LW is such a time sink. LWR allows you to do a lot more tactics like breaking line of sight to gain overwatch immunity during the following turn. It has the best ufo breach & clear experience.

i have played about half of a campaign with these rules and maxed alien spawns, and didn't end up liking them more than standard gameplay. because you can reveal the entire map on drop, maps have to work if that happens, and most maps don't have enough cover on drop for that kind of thing to feasibly work all the time.

if you just play with comps that don't have rocketeers you won't need to rely on them anymore and thus bring more loot home and have a healthier strat layer
it's better to not need the panic button at all than have it there while knowing it could still fail anyway if it feels like it

@@cassius_scrungoman Maybe I do just need to git gud but relying on things not going wrong is almost never a good idea. It's not like I use rockets in every bad situation, I fire one maybe once every 6 missions and most of those are shredder rockets to soften up a pack of mutons. My strat layer is always fine, the only time I run low on weapon fragments is when it's time to research plasma, in summer I have more sectoid, thin man, floater, drone and muton corpses than I can ever use and I'm rarely short on anything but muton elites, cyberdiscs and ethereals. And when I really need a rocket, I'm always thankful I brought one.

@@bmobmo6438 they don't pay you to bring the rockets back. having one soldier slot dedicated to a panic button you press one in a half dozen missions seems like a waste of time, space, and xp when that soldier could be a sniper instead

Beagle? uggh. That guy drives me crazy with his non stop heming and hawing about every little move. I tried it based on what you said, but just cannot take it.
And anyone else coming into this, do not listen to this guy about rocketeers. All flyers are made of metal, and I have lost count on how many times my rocketeer has blown 5 or 6 drones and or floaters out of the sky. They also turn two mechtoids plus their little sectoid platoons into shredded swiss cheese. Mutons also like to clump up around cars or a wall. Then whamo, they all lose their cover and half their health. Need to capture some aliens ? Rocketeers can soften up for ya.
Now LW1 does do something stupid, by having this rocket scatter mechanic. No farking idea where they got that. No hand held rockets or missles in modern warfare go running off willy nilly like in LW1. It is stupid. I always play with save scum active, just because of my visceral hatred of this mechanic. Rockets go where i point dude, no arguments, there is no farking way we would take 2 steps back merely cause some aliens show up. I also save scum level ups. Each soldier gets a mulligan on level up. These are supposed to be the soldiers chosen from the elite of each countries elite.
Also I love playing with training roulette. It hurts sometimes, but when your gunner gets close quarters combat, you are in for hella fun.
