    My brother and I were in a Tribe for Tribes 1 that was pretty committed. We were selected by the Devs of Tribes 2 to be part of the Beta testing, which was literally sent to us in the mail on a burned disk that had Tribes 2 Beta written on it with a sharpie.
    We were included in the Credits for the game for our efforts.

      welcome to the club former top clan here our team won many leagues - had the beta Tribes 2 CD. nothing topped Tribes 1, skill tactics, ski routes, everything was born there. it was so advanced for its time, radars, portable inventories, different type of games, capture and hold, ctf. great maps and customs. I have a wet dream, a dev like Respawn who could bring back to the roots of tribes.
      The 2nd tribes was slower, and too cluttered, vengeance was unbalanced and ascend felt a bit clumsy and stuck between two styles of games, with simplified gameplay.

    the real legacy of tribes is their multiplayer networking architecture white paper which provided a blueprint for making large scale, fast-paced multiplayer games even with slow, unpredictable connections. tribes 2 could handle 128 players at a time when most players had dial-up level internet speeds, which is insanely good. The tribes white paper was the foundation for Halo's networking model and even Unreal Engine took inspiration from it.

    The team at Broadside was brought together by what happened to Tribes 3. Our goal is not simply to 'make tribes' again, but to try and move the genre forward. And part of that will be introducing people to the ideas of the genre, who are again ahead of their time. It'll take more than jets, skiing and a flag; and we're preparing for that.

Oh my god, and that tinny little zap when you successfully login to a match. And that drumroll trumpet fanfare when someone captures a flag. I was maybe 7 then, I’m 29 now. That kind of scope creep was also likely the reason the game was so buggy on release. They reinvented about 10 wheels all while also wanting larger player counts, a bunch of different vehicles, etc. in the game. Dave Georgeson, who directed T2, eventually went on to make Planetside, which, based on that gameplay, was basically his vision for Tribes 2. He really didn't allow much room for input from the T1 community and was obviously not a T1 diehard. The game he put out was basically modded into a really fun title after a few months through begging and effort. The T1 community was already pretty actively entrenched in using 3rd party apps and sites to communicate, Tribalwar for forums and demo sharing, mIRC for chatting, e-mail and even early voice comm software (RogerWilco, Ventrilo, Teamspeak).

    I remember hearing about Tribes from some clan mates I played Starcraft with. I downloaded the demo, and my first experience was Raindance. The rain, the terrain and the base all so familiar to me now was such an eye opening experience. I played the demo countless hours and was hooked. One day shopping with my dad, I saw the full version sitting in a bargain bin at London Drugs for $16. I convinced my dad to buy it for me, and the rest is history. Played it countless hours upon hours, from 2000 to 2010. Sitting there at the queue for the 5150 base server on a friday night, using an auto join script that spammed the full server until finally someone had left. I would play on that server until the early hours of the next day, not regretting any of the time I spent on it. No other game ever held me the way Tribes did, and never will with all the old vets getting older and having families at 40 years old lol.

    Probably a very unpopular opinion, but the reason Tribes has never really found its footing was the intense focus on the "competitive" play.
    Tribes 2 has the best DNA to attract most gamers. Large maps, lots of vehicles, lots of different roles to play. You didn't need to be a speed spinfusor god to still have a good time just messing around like in Battlefield games. The shift into focus largely around speed capping and small teams never really let the game find an audience that weren't competitive players.

    • @meanoldrepstudios

      I agree. While I appreciate the long time fans love and skill, comments in the video like "Why did they add a dedicated button for flag passing? That was never needed before, new players should just learn how to do it".
      Does that new mechanic really hurt competitive play at all? The creator of the video even agreed that it didn't. So why bring it up?
      It indicates that a lot of these long term fans, and maybe rightfully so, cling to the sweaty, competitive, and super high skill ceiling of the series past.
      Halo and Titanfall have these very same issues right now. With long term fans stomping on newcomers and continually requesting the "purest" stripped down form of the game. In Halo for example: BR starts, no vehicles, CTF only, and no motion tracker.
      I first played Tribes in Ascend and really had fun with it, albeit while being fairly average at the game. I had no clue Tribes III actually released, and may try picking it up or Tribes II.

I was crossing my fingers, hoping to get a solid year of fun with some cool people...and I got *almost* that. I started with the playtests in Dec 24, and last played around October - before I finally hit the bricks. It could have been so much more....but I'm glad to atleast get to play a new tribes game again after decades (I only played T1, and Legions overdrive)

    I think you overlooked a few very important aspects for T:A.
    1. The rockbounce bug becoming a supported and integral feature for capping (some vikatikki footage here would show how this could be taken to an almost inhuman extreme). This is probably my favorite feature of the game, and one I’ve never seen anywhere else.
    2. The OOTB patches, which came in late 2015-2016, completely overhauling the game with controversial changes (way too many to list) such as replacing the 9 classes with just the 3 armor types. I personally liked OOTB much more, but I think the long term effect was to alienate the top level players that had grown accustomed to GOTY.
    3. The already tiny T:A community lost a big chunk of its players to T3 (myself included), and they never came back. This is killed what little was left of the T:A community. Mixers can still happen every few weeks, but they’re nowhere near the size and frequency of just a year prior.
    You said you don’t follow T:A too closely so it’s understandable. Great video anyway!

    • @ThePlayerOfGames
      @ThePlayerOfGames 2 месяца назад +2

      Yeah 9 classes was very cool and at a time when Team Fortress 1 was basically doing the same but I can see how reducing it to armour-equipment combinations allows greater player flexibility and customisation whilst also reducing initial complexity

    • @narcolepticmarshmallow9012
      @narcolepticmarshmallow9012 23 дня назад

      still really sad how T:A went in the end, first the official servers went down out of nowhere then T3 took the few remaining on the community servers. I sat and watched as the player base went from a few server, with one rookie only server, to just 1 or 2 CTF servers and a DM server, to just one CTF server left. Then even that last server went from always full, to only at peak hours, then only on weekends, to just 4 or 5 of us playing on our own.
      I really like that pick up games happen, but nothing will ever replace just casual pubbing, never cared for the comp side of these games.

    This is probably the best possible time for Tribes to make a comeback, Souls games, Elden Ring, Space Marine 2, Path of Exile 2, even Factorio, these games and more are teaching the industry two crucial things: Proper, carefully crafted difficulty is essential, and trumps mindless accessibility every time, even in terms of popularity and profit. And second, playing and knowing their own games in-depth is a part of a developers job. From what i've gathered Tribes has always lacked in one crucial area that would lead to success, here's hoping someone comes along that finally has all their bases covered.

    Gosh dang hearing that music was a blast from the past, staying up late with my neighbor playing Ninja+ on Tribes 2. I was hoping that T3 would be the return we all hoped for but dang.. was it not great. Here's hoping it gets a proper comeback!

    This will probably be my go-to video to share with people that I know about the series for the foreseeable future. Really well made, comprehensive, but you also managed to keep the video under an hour.
    I do think that slamming Erez is something that was needed to be said in a comprehensive history of the series. Actual clown decision making in the recent entries.
    Lovingly, one of the banned in the purge.

      I was specifically talking about you as one of the hardcore fans who was banned. Dude really shot his own investment in the foot, over and over. Glad you liked it!

      @@omgitsfishstix That is Hi-Rez in a nutshell. They start off decent and then empty the magazine into their lower appendages, repeatedly and with prejudice. It's sad to watch every time. The only exception is SMITE, to which they cling with everything they have.

    Still one of my most loved gaming-series, at least the first 2 games. The amount of time i spent in these 2 games had to have cost my parents quite a hefty dial-up tab....

    It's crazy that the PC gaming landscape of the early 2000s was so unpredictable and fast-moving that pretty much everyone's "favorite game" would be a landmark title that birthed a new genre and is still the best said genre. You'd be hard pressed to find a team-based tactical mobility shooter better than Tribes 2. My favorite game, Morrowind, is STILL one of the best RPG worlds ever created. AvP2 does asymmetrical PvP as good or better than any game made since. Deus Ex does stuff that no other ImSim has even attempted. Diablo 2 is the only ARPG anyone even has a positive opinion of.
