I may be wrong since I didn't watch the show when it first came out, but I'm pretty sure a lot of the hatred for Amber came because she knew Mark was Invincible before the whole college android debacle, but still blamed him for leaving and acting like that was the final straw in their relationship. She acts so coldly towards him for literally saving all their lives just because he didn't become open with her about who he was in a universe when being even remotely close to a superhero puts you in incredible danger constantly.

Really it's an error of adaptation. She acted the exact same [in this respect] in the comic and no one gave her flak for it. No one gave the new one flak for it either. Until she reveals she already knew which completely re-contextualises and re-characterises pretty much everything she's done from tragic but unfortunate misunderstanding to near sociopathic meanness. I mean, screaming at your boyfriend and publicly calling him a coward for fleeing a dangerous situation is one thing, doing the same thing when you know he didn't flee and was in fact, risking his life to save yours and others' is a whole other thing. I just think the writers didn't consider how one seemingly minor change makes for a completely different (and way less likeable) character. An easy fix (which they can still do whenever they like) is just adding a line where she confesses to have been lying when she said she knew for weeks, but just wanted to not seem slow as that would re-re-characterise her actions as far more... human.
The whole thing is interesting because they actually succeeded with Debbie. They made her suspect Nolan rather than be blindsided by his turn but, understanding that changing nothing else would just make her look paranoid and suspicious, they altered Nolan's actions so that his getaway was far less clean, leaving more clues that would justify Debbie's new suspicion. Like, in the comic, he offed the Guardians and fled, wasn't found anywhere near the crime-scene. And he let his weird Viltrumite attitude show far less. But if they kept that the same, Debbie would just come off as untrusting and creepy.

The reason people didn't like Amber in the first season is because she kind of played with Mark by pretending she doesn't know he was Invincible. She kept getting upset at him for being late and stuff while apparently knowing he was out there saving lives which feels kind of selfish even though kind of understandable. Season 2 Amber is much better in my eyes.

    • @Arkayjiya
      @Arkayjiya 4 месяца назад +12

I'm gonna have to go a bit against the grain here, because to me Amber was right not to tell him. It's his secret to give or not, his choice to trust her with it or not. She didn't play with him, he played with her, she just kept up his charade because *he* needed to make that choice. Mark isn't owed a relationship, if he 1) can't make time for people and 2) can't even tell them why he can't make time, then he doesn't get to date. If he wants to, he needs to find a way to clear at least one of those two hurdles before that.
Not that I'm blaming Mark much, he's young, of course he's gonna make mistakes while he figures things out, that's normal, that doesn't make him bad. But he did make the mistake, and the hate for Amber is way overtuned. There's one instance where her actions really don't make sense, it's specifically when she blames him for abandoning her even though she knows he didn't.
She had no reason to go that far and it doesn't even make sense from anyone's perspective including her own, so it reads more like bad writing than the act of a character. That one was fucked up and made me go wtf, but overall people are acting like she's has a pattern of abusive behaviour rather than her having one very specific and never repeated instance of bad writing.

@@Arkayjiya Normally I might agree with you here, but lets remember one thing. It is a massive secret and they had only been dating a few months. This is the type of thing where it could endanger him, his mother, her, his friends, her family, all of it. I think Mark is totally justified in not telling her. And Amber isn't entitled to know everything about Mark instantly either. Plus if you know there is a legit reason behind him being late, then don't be passive aggressive about it. The writing does seem to fall flat when you realize the gravity of the entire secret and their entire situation.
Another reason for the backlash was because most fans of this show in season one were people who had read the comics from the early 2000s and loved Amber's character and didn't like the unnecessary changes made to her character when everyone else in the show is almost exactly on point.

"Normally I might agree with you here, but lets remember one thing. It is a massive secret and they had only been dating a few months. This is the type of thing where it could endanger him""
I've already addressed all of that in my previous post. As I said, He's not entitled to a relationship. If it can endanger him so he can' tell her, but he also can't be there for her, then he should just not date her in the first place.
As I said, not that I think that makes him a bad person, he's young and inexperienced, of course he's gonna make errors of judgement, but it does make it mostly his fault.
"And Amber isn't entitled to know everything about Mark instantly either"
She is absolutely entitled to know why he can't keep a single promise. If he can't tell her, he shouldn't have accepted to date her once again. You think he's entitled to date her and lie to her about things that affect their relationship that heavily? That's nonsense. If it affects the relationship, the partner is entitled to know about it. If you still can't tell them, you shouldn't be dating them in the first plavce.
The mental gymnastic necessary to make things her fault is insane. It's almost 100% Mark's fault beside that one scene which I agree she was completely out of line but also isn't consistent with any of the rest of the writing, there is no logic behind the scene not even a selfish logic, it just doesn't make sense or fit with the rest of the characterisation.
Mark on the other hand, is the one being an asshole for 100% of their relationship, it's a pattern of behaviour for him, until that moment. He's consistently at fault.

    • @GandalfTheBased
      @GandalfTheBased 4 месяца назад +1

@@Arkayjiya so I would agree if we are talking about comic book Amber. In the comics, you have the same issues. But Amber doesn’t figure it out until he tells her. In the show, they changed that to her knowing it and still angry at him. So no I fully disagree with you that Mark is 100% at fault here in the show. And again, no Amber is not entitled to know this secret months into their relationship. Whether he is lying to her or not is immaterial to the fact that of what he is lying about. You say “besides that one scene” if you’re referring to the scene where he tells her the truth, then that one scene is the entire problem. Because it changes the entire dynamics of the previous scenes. Again this isn’t an issue in the comics but they chose to change it in the show and did some major character damage to her.

the reason why people hate amber is because
1: she tore him a new one when he "left" them at the college attack KNOWING that he was invincible and never left
2: (atleast after the first month or so of them dating) that she was mad at him for being late to whatever they had planned when she knew that he was out saving other people/the planet
meaning that she thought her comfort and having fun was more important than other peoples lives/the planet
and 3: iirc at the end of the first season she compared mark to nolan who just devastated multiple spots across the world killing a couple thousand people because mark kept life changing secrets from her

Personally, I was angry with the show writers for pushing their badly written forced narrative too hard from the start. Amber doesn't act like an organically written character. Instead she acts like a bad writer's idea of an empowered ideology. None of the characters behave organically when interacting with Amber or her antics. There is far too much bad, lazy writing to analyze so I'll just concentrate on a single scene example:
The whole "magically finding dirt on Todd" so she could bully & blackmail him was lazy, garbage writing.
      1) Amber gives her phone number to Todd to give to Mark. She's ok with Todd having her number? Really?
      2) Todd tells Mark that Amber blackmailed him and the dirt is still out there to be found. Meaning others could blackmail & bully him too. Why would Todd want anyone else to know about that, especially Mark?
      3) Todd was already humiliated by Amber & Mark. He was avoiding them both at this point. He even spent 3 days at home coping with how Mark was unfazed after he was punching him. Amber became a worse bully aggressor than Todd ever was.
      4) Amber's "power move" on Todd is not a good look. Why would Mark ever want to date a blackmailer when he has a secret identity to protect?

17:00 Something you gotta understand about Amber, is that they changed her character from the comics, but without changing her story.
In the comics, she was kind of a bland character. Literally just there to be the girlfriend. All the angst about their relationship was real, and the final straw for her was Mark abandoning them to deal with the robo monster on the college campus. When Mark went to reveal himself to her, she was surprised and amazed to learn that Mark was a superhero, and was happy to get back together with him because now she understood why he was so flaky. The whole series of events, along with them getting back together again, made sense.
New Amber was given more character and personality. The showrunners saw her as an opportunity to have a sort of idyllic character. They wanted to make her a smart, strong, independent character, not just "The girlfriend." So it seemed natural to them that she would be smart enough to figure out his identity before he revealed it. But that messed up the whole story, because now none of it makes sense. The anger, the breakup, the distance only made sense when Amber didn't know the truth. This Amber knew the truth, but still followed the story that was written for a character that didn't. It didn't make sense. The excuse they gave for it was bad, and the reasoning for the excuse was shallow. And getting back together was weird nonsense. But that's Amber's story. They changed her character without thinking about how it would change the story, so now the story half way doesn't make sense. Just gotta live with it.

To be crystal clear the reason we hate amber is because of the scene at the college. As a refresher a cyborg showed up and attacked, mark then ran changed into invincible and came back, he then saved William and Amber.
The big no no is the fact that after saving them he leaves changes back into mark, and Amber starts yelling at him for being aweful by abandoning her and william to die. The scene makes perfect sense until 2 days later she tells mark she knew for weeks. At which point the fandom went "oh... 😮Ohhhhhhhh."
Now rethink the scene she accuses mark of abandoning her and william when she knows for a fact the mark saved her and William, yet she gaslights and emotionally abuses him for abandoning her. That's when the fans lost it rage mode activated 😡!

This season definitely 'rebooted' Amber, which I'm honestly fine with. Her character felt incredibly disjointed in the last couple of episodes of season 1, allegedly due to a miscommunication between the writers of the episodes. It was so disjointed to the point it took me out of the show because I just stopped viewing Amber like a character and just wondered what the writers were doing. Scrapping that whole thing and continuing without acknowledging any of it was genuinely great for me because I could just pretend none of it even happened in the first place.

So the thing with Amber in the first season happened due to a miscommunication in the writer's room, as we now know, about whether or not and how long Amber knew about Mark's secret identity.
It's really only one scene in ep 7 that made everyone turn on her, the one where Mark outs himself as Invincible and she responds with: "I know you're a superhero. I figured it out weeks ago." That scene kind of assassinates her character (unintentionally, like I said), because it recontextualizes her reactions in the previous episode, which, up to this point, were completely understandable, as callous and selfish.
They do everything in their power to fix this mistake in season 2, and in my opinion, they really succeed. To be honest, I NEVER understood the people who were like "tHiS cHaRaCtEr iS aCtUaLlY tHe WoRsT pArT oF ThE ShOw AnD a TErRiBlE hUmAn BeInG, sEcOnD oNlY tO tHe DeViL" because of ONE scene where the writers fucked up. I'm not exaggerating too, there's legit something akin to an Amber hate cult on the internet who actively try to look for excuses to make her look like an irredeemable monster and assassinate her character further. All because of just one scene. It's nuts.
Edit: oh, and by the way, the Giant's clearly orange. :D

Women on average can see more colours than men so when Montana says "that's orange" and Kenny says "that's red" it's likely because (statistically) Montana can literally see more variations of red and orange than Kenny can.

Less than 10% of men are affected by colorblindness. Most men and women are trichromats. A very small percentage of women (and very very rarely, men) are tetrachromats. So statistically, they probably have very similar abilities to distinguish colors. Their eyes are likely seeing the same color, but their brains have assigned different labels to that color. I recently read An Immense World by Ed Yong which has a really interesting section on vision and color. Great book, would recommend to anyone interested in how senses work.

  • @oggrim2824
    @oggrim2824 4 месяца назад +44

The hatred for Amber stems from 3 things:
    1. They race swapped her and changed her personality a bit. Things that would be negligible if not for:
    2. She has an inconsistent and non-sensical personality/reaction to Mark. Aka "I'm dumping you because you left me in a dangerous situation. Also, I know you didn't actually leave me in a dangerous situation, you're a superhero." And then there's "I care about helping people and doing good in the world... but also, I'm going to punish you for being a superhero trying to help people and do good in the world... because I should be a higher priority than people whose lives are in danger." And that inconsistency is even more abhorrent when Debby and Eve are there as shining examples. Debbie being an example of a woman who knows that she can't be selfish when it comes to her superhero partner's time. An actually kind and caring person who wants to make the world better and lowkey SAVED THE WORLD by instilling that goodness in her son and monster of a husband. And Eve who knows Mark's struggles and shows that same type of goodness and selflessness.
    3. Because of how Amber went back to Mark after gaslighting him, and treating him like crap, as if that didn't happen.
MINOR spoiler, but Amber is better as a character in Season 2 because she's actually consistent and as good of a person as the show wanted us to think she was in Season 1.
But the damage is done as far as Im concerned. I want her away from my boy.

So there are a lot of idiots on the internet that take their dislike of Amber too far drowning out legitimate criticism. But just to be clear, the reason her character is such a problem in the first season is because she breaks up with mark for leading her on and not telling the truth, even though she knew he was invincible for weeks and chose to pretend to not know and emotionally abuse him for being late to their dates and stuff despite the fact he literally saves Amber's life on one of these occasions. And then all the characters around Mark act like this is totally ok behavior for her to do and it is somehow Marks fault. When the correct and reasonable reaction would have been to talk to Mark soon after finding out his secret and either ending or trying to continue the relationship. So the main criticism is that it is a plot hole that she is emotionally abusive to Mark without anyone acknowledging that. But people on the internet do over react when talking about it.

So lil art thing from an artist, I'd say The Giant is a tertiary colour 'red-orange' or vermillion if you're feeling fancy. Pretty much dead centre between red and orange. So you're both wrong and right at the same time! isn't that fun. You can really see it when Robot is right by The Giant, as he's much more of a true orange.
Every secondary and primary colour has one of these and they're all named just as creatively, in case you were wondering. Blue-green (teal), blue-violet, red-violet (magenta), yellow-orange, and yellow-green. I always find it funny when people argue over "is this a primary or secondary colour?!" as though tertiary colours and the whole spectrum of colour between just doesn't exist. IDK what peoples insistence on the main primary/secondary colours is, you can just say its a mix! Thats most colours!

People don't dislike Amber, they dislike the writing of her character. There's also a consensus that she's better written this season.
Anyway, my theory is that Mark didn't date Amber in other universes. We see in the start of this episode that he seemed attached to Eve. I'm thinking that universe's Mark dated Eve instead of Amber. And as a weird side effect, he didn't retrain his connection to humanity. Because he struggled with being a superhero and dating Amber, he remained grounded.
If he had dated Eve, he wouldn't have to hide his superhero antics. He could be an hour late and explain that he was stopping a meteor from hitting Earth instead of having to come up with some excuse. This could end up with him looking "at the bigger picture" instead of being connected to the people. So perhaps he wouldn't help Titan either, seeing it as beneath him.
Considering that we only see him interact with Eve in this other universe and as far as we can tell Amber doesn't exist, I think this is a potential difference.

If Angstrom were actually smart and not selfish, he wouldn't have been the guy to take in all that knowledge, and would've been content being the taxi driver for the Angstrom he gave that knowledge to. In order to preserve his mental state and also act as a check on himself in case he ever went rogue, making the only version of himself capable of making portals the one the experiment is performed upon us beyond dangerous.

The main issue people had with Amber was the fact she appernty knew Mark was a superhero, which completely recontextualized every time she's givin mark a hard time, especially the campus attack with the cyborg when she got angry at Mark while knowing full well he did the complete opposite of abandoning her, it makes her look selfish and childish, if she knew she shave said so

Amber said she was mad at mark because he lied about being a super hero. She however knew, so she never had this information hidden from her. Is she valid for lying? No, she kept the fact that she knew. Could’ve told him she knew and removing his need to lie all the time. But no she doesn’t say anything, complains that he doesn’t reveal the hero information either. So when she’s mad am him, it’s almost as she want led an excuse to be mad at him
