That's good news! Thanks for the update, I was wondering how you were making out, that kind of interference can be so frustrating. I hope to catch you on the air! 73 W3GUY Ernie
Darren - I am thrilled that your efforts appear to have paid off - and well.....I felt sadness and anxiety even that you would just be peeing in the wind with the power company. Wow - what a find re: lightnig arrester. I am in Mims FL about 3 ours due south from you in Jacksonville- wish I was a it closer you are a fascinating and busy and ham-radio helpful guy - I'd visit. Darren I have a good friend whowas a pilit in Tokyo and came back home here evey 4-5 weeks until Covid. He is now employed with Global Air and does contract things - wherever. I understand your wild hours and away from your hobby. Sooooo glad you took the time to update many of us. I am leaning towards a zerofive like you have. Hoping you would buy it again. cheers, 73 Cal, K4BEW
Cal, I just got up this morning... I just recheck 40m and the power line noise is gone and not noticeable. On 20m though, I see power line noise but not as bad as before. I do believe that a QRM Eliminator will reduce the power line noise. In regards of Zero Five antenna, I am thinking about buying the 43' 10-160m and replace my 27' HOA. When your planning a trip back up in JAX area, coordinate with my through email. You can look me up on QRZ and find my email. 73 for now CA Darren.
Always nice to get something like that fixed. That seems odd that the power line would just ramp up and take off like a motor coming on. BTW what is the linear light bar that pulsates above you call letter sign?
Yeah JEA came thru !! Looks like a 3-phase transformer bank on pole 110. Normal design standards would include 1 lightning arrester per phase along with 1 fuse-cutout per phase. I suppose the birds may have built a nest in and around an arrester which could have made the arrester fire periodically (but high voltage above the arrester rating, or an arrester which has had one too many lighting hits could also be causing similar problems). Glad it worked out Capt. Old EE signing off. PS Just started in the Ham radio hobby, building my station now... KO4QWY whoa that's a mouth full ! 😁
I'm on 40meter tonight and the power line noise is way way down to nothing However, on 20 meters is a different story. I can see the power line noise in my built in oscilloscope on my Yaesu FTDX101MP. Today, I saw the JEA gang in their van using their infrared device to look at power poles. I'm glad their in my neighborhood checking things out.
@@DarrenN4VFR Good the IR equipment will help them look for hot/bad connections and potential bad equipment (i.e. a transformer with a slow leak of oil over time will begin to show hot on their IR). Good to see they are performing a solid effort. I would recommend a creating a log on what times you notice the noise. When i was in power quality many years ago, we found keeping a log would sometimes provide clues to certain times of day which led to discovering the offending source. One last thing be sure to check your own appliances and devices for proper operation in your home (lose connections, failing equipment, etc). If your soil is sandy which i expect it is, this is infamous for poor grounding resistivity (the utility and your home, but not much you can do about that {worse is dry weather}). Another potential would be a neighbor's house and his/her sources of electrical noise. Another potential comes to mind since you mentioned your HF (40M & 20M frequencies), catv internet upload frequencies are in that 5MHz to 50Mhz or beyond range. Older coaxial catv systems are known to be leaky, so i would recommend checking your internet service in your house first for lose connections, poor grounds, and your modem (if your modem is close to your rig i would suggest turning off the modem as a test also {unplug it} then recheck your radio). Outside check for the closest catv cable (your neighbor, a pole line etc). On catv they use main trunk amplifiers and line-extender amplifiers {smaller typically 12" long by 8" tall}, if you have one of those by your house a lose connection there could be part of the problem. Lets take this one step at a time as the world of power quality can be a never ending funhouse!! 😎
Interesting, I'll have to see if I can track down the source here in mandarin, I get the same noise, but predominantly on 20m, I'll take an am radio on my next walk around the block with the kids and see If I can find it, knocked out the last of my local sources by process of elimination, the last being some LED lights from IKEA, which I suspect use some sort of PWM for voltage regulation. so its either the transformer box across the street or something an my neighbors house, for now been able to work around it with DNR in my Yaesu 73 Darren safe travels pare
The raspy power line noise is gone on 40m and my 20m band, I'm picking up some power line noise but not what is was 2 weeks ago. I ran into the JEA utility van in the neighbor hood and they're using infra red technology to identify faulty power line poles.
Great news hope you can now enjoy that beautiful radio.

happy for ya.. will make radio time much more enjoyable 73

That's awesome news!!
How exciting! This is great - so frustrating to have awesome equipment only to be degraded by some RFI/EMI. Have fun!
40m RFI is better than it was and doesnt bother me now. 20m however, I can see the power line noise on the oscilloscope on the radio.

Those lights above my desk that changes every 2 seconds are called "Tix Clock" I believe they are discontinued though.

What is the machine you are using to hear the emi?
At the time of this video, I was using he Yaesu FT-101MP.
