- In today's video, I am looking at the much anticipated TONEX pedal from IK Multimedia. This pedal is the hardware version of IK Multimedia TONEX software, where you can capture the sound of your favorite guitar amplifier and then plug into the TONEX pedal to play the exact tone that you captured.
Experience hyper-realistic Tone Models
A revolutionary concept in rig modeling, and the core of the TONEX ecosystem, TONEX software uses breakthrough AI Machine Modeling™ technology to let you model the sound of any amp, cabinet, combo, or pedal, and turn it into a plug-in, all with a sonic accuracy that’s virtually indistinguishable from the real thing. You can instantly play up to 1,000+ Tone Models already available plus browse, demo and download the growing number of Tone Models available on TONEX in ToneNET.
From rare one-of-a-kind vintage amps to modern rigs, TONEX makes it possible and affordable to own the most sought-after gear in the world.
The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs. Видеоклипы
I just discovered this channel a week or so ago, but WOW. This is my new go-to for tone!
It’s a great channel. Really useful and fun to watch!
Wow an exclusive ! this is great for the Rat Channel 👏 and a fantastic pedal too, got to get one, been using Amplitude 5 and tonex software for a while now and was blown away with the quality, now with the Tonex pedal I can gig with the same quality tones ! superb !
Moving faster and faster to the "amp less" world where nobody cares what the amp IS...just what SOUNDS you are getting. Thank You Paul! Best Regards and Best Wishes!
How long before somebody trains an AI from all of the captured models and we have an AI that can produce models from prompts without having to capture a real amp? Ampless amp models. 🤯
@@peek4b00h And imagine AI of every pedal ever, even the very complex Eventide stuff. Virtual pedalboard of any amp and any pedal combination. Talk about option paralysis! 🤣🤣
I feel stupid for asking this, but if you're playing live with this setup, what do you actually see on stage?...just a laptop on a stand next to you and the pedal on the floor? The signal is being fed into the house pa and you have a wedge to hear yourself? Just asking, as I've never used or thought about using a setup like this....
@@bluarcher5941 no laptop necessary, thats the beauty of this pedal…. Laptop only necessary for setting up your presets (which you would do before a show)…
Yea, the names are just useful to give people a general idea. Who knows, one day this technology could surpass tube amps. I have a Mark v 25 and there was a 2C+ that I absolutely loved, if my amp god forbid, went away somehow, I would be happy to use Tonex.
It’s here! Thanks for the demo!
Absolutely stunning sound on the Fender with the two P-90's (starting at 1:04). Beautiful playing throughout Paul.
You get by far the best clean tones out of the ToneX than any video I've watched... and I've watched many.
Yes, true...... because they don't come out only from ToneX :)
I’ve used quite a lot of their Logic plug ins before, and they are always great.
The clean tone on the bad cat is so good. Can't wait to get my tonex pedal.
A truly great review and demonstration of sounds. Thank you.
Great demo. I love IK, I have Syntronik, Sampletank, Amplitube 5 and ToneX.
You achieved some great tones. How can anyone argue with this?
Thanks Paul. This is gonna be FUN!
Ordered! My own pedalboard, plugged directly into this, every amp under the sun. How did the others not see the need for this?
Nice demo! Just ordered one too 😀
Enjoyed your demonstration 👍🏼
Great tone Paul, I am sure your ability helps! Great job.
Thanks for the great review.
I’m a QC user but just ordered the Tonex pedal as - from my alternate perspective - I effectively get the pedal “free” with Max (using some existing IK bucks here to make up the difference). The Max Dumble models alone are almost worth it - and combine that with some fantastic Jubilee models I downloaded it made it a no-brainer. I’ve got some great tube amps that I look forward to modelling as well (totally could have done a great job of that with the QC as well admittedly but never got around to it).
I simply love that Pink strat. Some great tones Paul. Love that shimmer sound and your chord melodies!
Wow, IK work quick. I literally said last night on the live stream that they should get into hardware 😂 Great product, amazing video as usual Paul 🤘🏼
The AmpliTube line was launched in 2021. They had 4 pedals before this one.
This will be my next guitar purchase for sure
It's obvious I have to get a great Mac soon, then get Tonex.
But the real star of this is your great playing Well Done !
Such great sounds! Thanx a lot for sharing!!!!
My pleasure
Excellent demo
Seriously considering selling my Boss Pedal collection and Vox AC30 Alnico Blue to buy one of these instead. I’ve used Tonex software since it came out and love it. This is the icing on the cake I can replicate the tones love exactly how they are going to the recordings. A real holy grail moment.
Just bought a tone x. Wow! Sold my quad cortex. It really does capture the amps well and I use my usual effects on my board with it. The quad cortex effects were not up to standard and like you said real pedals didn’t work the same in front of it like tone x does. Also tone x runs off normal 9v low power consumption
ye 9volts but 320 ampers ?? was it?
Beautiful tones.. if you released a pack of amps you've captured, I'm sure I'm wouldn't be alone in buying them.
That little thing you play at 4:28 is beautiful. I actually forgot to listen to the comparison 😅
How could I pay attention to anything more than those Beautiful guitars!!!! Great collection you have . That Gold top P90 is 🔥🔥 ❤ . okay going to start video over and listen now! I’m a p90 guy and one day will play one of those Paul’s!!!! New Subscriber !
Best review on this pedal..thanks
Someone loves p-90s.I really enjoy your playing.
Thank you for sharing your review it helped me decide to get one!
Glad I could help
Wow great demo. You sold me on this pedal. IK will owe you some commissions! :P
Paul, there is one skill, that you just don‘t have: you are unable to let anything sound bad! :D
Great tones... cool product!
These heavily modded teles and strats you're rockin are AWESOME!!!!
I was waiting for the price to be well out of my range, nice surprise! All that for £399 is fantastic, looks like I'll not be needing to buy a Captor X after all. Cheers Paul :)
I think you still do. I've been looking. You either need a load box and some other tools or the ToneX Capture. If I'm wrong, I'd be glad to know
@@ehdforlife In my case instead of attenuating my Marshalls with a Captor X, this box should allow me get a good (valves cooking) low volume Marshall tone without annoying the neighbours. For recording use (and effects) I have a GT1000, that should serve as a PC interface for the Tonex. All the hundreds of other amp tones available are icing on the cake and if it sounds as good for live use, as Paul here is making it out to be, then so much the better :)
Your playing around the 1:30mark - beautiful and inspiring.
Cheers Steve
Huge fan of your channel. I have Kingsley Maiden D, and Constable Plexi preamp that I use with pedals like: Gladio, JHS Angry Charlie, Flint ,El Capistan etc. Couldn't be more happier with my sound. But,the question for you is: How is it that on your every video, regardless of what u using, sound is top notch. Real Amp,Fractal, Boss, plug ins, whatever is it's always 10. Now,that is an art in itself ,and video about that would be realy, realy welcome. Keep em coming and all the best.
Cheers Bero, you have some nice gear there. I think I look for a very specific type of sound in a piece of gear, this can also be a hindrance. I like tight articulate amp sounds. I sound terrible through a tweed amp.😀
Playing does not disappoint
I absolutely love my Amplitube!! If this thing sounds as good as Amplitube I’m sold!!!
it'a thousand times better man
@@slidersson No, ten thousand times
beautiful, i want that now.
Paul, you make everything sound good. But this is exceptional!
Dude the Fender with P90's OMG!!!
Yeah its a really cracking guitar Brett. It was one of Greg Fessler's showcase guitars for the 2018 NAMM show.
Thanks a lot Paul !!👋
I've decided to get the Tonex Pedal because I've tried the free version of the tonex plugin and I loved it ! Try it before you go ahead and spent 400 Bucks in a product that maybe you don't like.
Great tones
O.T. that fender it's fantastic!
Great review Paul!! I could listen to you play all day long! Always tasty and killer tones. I need one! 😎
One of the few guitar channels where the talking doesn't get in the way. Great content.
you had me at takes pedals well :D
I've tried to use Positive Grid's BIAS ecosystem to have the same sound on computer and live, and... it was just too fiddly messing with an iPad and interface (and they've discontinued their pedals and big amps). I think this could be the way forward for me. Thanks for sharing!
I was gonna go with an HX stomp as my first decent modeler , but not any mo6, this is just too good
gear is just gear🙂love your playing🙂
Not going to lie. I'm using a Kemper and I'd happily replace it with a little stomp box sized alternative like this. I don't use the Kemper to actually profile my own *one* amp, I just want a little magic box with a handful of solid tones for gigging and recording. This Tonex pedal looks 🔥🔥🔥
Do you not use any effects on the Kemper?
@@iansimmons735 Yes I use the in-built FX. I suppose the Tonex is a wee bit limited in that aspect but doesn't it have compressor, overdrive, reverb etc?
@@IainFrame No overdrive, although you can capture an OD pedal but can have an od capture go into an amp capture. I think you can capture an OD into an amp as a single baked in capture though.
This is a game changer
I love that paisley strat ,
Finally a profiler/high-end emulator with a competitive price point. This is actually a compelling purchase for casual/hobbyists rather than having to commit to a "pro-grade" product like a axefx3 (£2399+ in UK), Quad-Cortex (£1599) or Kemper (£1299), for which you could buy a good 2nd hand head + cab or a whole damn car.
This is mono only and offers no fx loop. Id argue its not a high end emulator based on the fact that those two options are a studio standard.
@@thyggs when recording on a record, nowdays they record dry, then put effects. That's why the fx loop is useless in this case. You can get a good fx stompbox for stereo fx and fx in general
You're the best paul. Your reviews makes spend more money! 🤣🤣🤣
I’m gonna wait for version 2 of this to come out, hopefully next year.
But why?
Exactly
Great video and amazing unit. I'm really wondering did you try to run it with Boss Katana and how would that sound ?
Great video. Very informative and great playing and sounds. You also save 100$ if you own Tonex MAX.
briljant! just bought another product but this is tempting anyway
Cool, sounds from a great player. Just wish The Tonex Pedal had a stereo insert - send/return - so that I could run effects before using the USB out to send audio to my computer. I think that was a serious oversight.
That would be cool.
Thanks for showing a clean setting. Too many distorted tones on demos.
Great playing actually.
Just My GranMa is Missing To Show That Pedal on RUclips Today 😅😅😅 but for a Trusty and Tasty Demo that's the Place ..with Paul🎸😀🤟
Oh yeah ik multimedia good sound wow💪
Hello! Great demo and channel! Would you be able to do a review of the ISP Theta Pro DSP and dive into its vintage preamp section with some lower gain settings? Your playing is very easy on the ears and I think you would do a super demo. Cheers!
Really good demo and overview of the pedal, thanks. I don’t see any use for it now with my 7 yr old Helix, but should it die tomorrow this is probably what I would replace it with.
I'm thinking hard of getting one of these.. I need something for a floor board amp and this might just do the trick at a much better price than a Kemper, etc.. This thing will kill kemper for guys playing live.. What a great tool.. I'd just use the amps they give me free and maybe add a few pedals and be off to the races for recording and gigging.. Especially since I love it that you can adjust things right on the pedal like EQ and noise gate, etc.. Just perfect for gigging..
Magnificent
Thank you sir. Always enjoy your videos. Just noticed the pedal doesn't have a delay?
How does the dynamic response compare to real amps, the Kemper or the quality cortex ?
Does it compress or has it distant fell from latency ?
beautiful creamy tones
Hi great video thanks, any knowledge if there prone to malfunction ? lag ? hows the quality control on them? where are they built ? is it with quality components ? thanks so much
I bought it and I was honestly not impressed until I went to Tone net and played your Matchless and Bad Cat captures. Suddenly this affordable piece of gear became my all time favorite. It is not perfect, it could have an led screen, Bluetooth app, aux in etc but still this is the most amazing affordable gear a guitar player can buy today !!!!
I love Tonex, but I miss a switch on/off button
Would love to hear that in a mix on the song falling to pieces!!
Great. Many thanks. Will you be uploading your amp captures? Please?
this in combo with an helix FX. what more do we need ? 😁 that way we can add the effects not available on the tonex (delay, chorus, tremolo). you have your sound on the go be it at home with headphones, at a gig, on vacation,..
Hello Paul, I am wondering if you got deeper in technical combinations and considered to test the setup with two tonex's and gt core signal chain with two amps setup? Interesting would be if different amp models on tonex's introduce different latencies and would destroy the idea? May be you have done it already with neural/kemper?
Thanks. 🙂
You're welcome 😊.
We have 3 guitaristis in my band and for the last few months 2 of them have used a Tonex models of their stage amps when we rehearse, but picking up a couple of these pedals would be GREAT as backups in case an amp were to die or stop working, and rehearsals would be less taxing on the computer since we use the same computer as our live mixer as well. It should have been $299 not $399 but I understand the thinking behind it.
Sounds like a bargain at $399. You get the MAX version of the software also, standalone and plugin, not to mention the best sounding amp captures being made.
@@Guitaural. Not if you already paid for the Tonex app and own all of amplitude. If it could do the captures on the pedal itself then yes it would be worth $400 but just as a storage unit it's a good idea but not the best pricing. Now if you don't already own Tonex then yea it's a pretty good deal. What makes it great is you can have multiple channels of the same amp captured and switch between them. The way my band was using it we captured the clean channel and the guys were just using Overdrive pedals to simulate the hot channel. Now they could have both channels of their amps in one pedal. I already ordered one but I had 180 jam points so I got a nice deep discount on it. So I'm not mad at the price. But if I order a second one for the other guitarist one I will have to pay full price so I'll wait for a sale!! LOL Cheers!
@@joesalyers Just a heads up, not sure what the coupon code is, but they have stated that the pedal will be discounted to $299.99 for the owners of the software.
Are you serious? Still not happy at what is a VERY affordable price?! Sorry, but that’s just plain ridiculous. Companies still need to make a profit 🤦🏻♂️
@@kiwiramjet5625 I get it but I said this before I saw it had a $100 discount for Tonex max owners. Plus I had enough jam points to pick up 2 of these for $245 each. So I'm not complaining. I hope they do bring out a version that can do the captures on the device itself since that would be really handy,
Hey mate, awesome captures! That sounds great!
Were both those matchless captures on tonenet? I can only seem to find the one with the boost in front of it, was the clean one up there as well?
I thought it was, I’ll have to check next week.
Great video... love your Matchless Independence 35 TSR Capture... playing its lot since December. Are the others in this video also available... can’t find them on toneNET 🤔
His Captures sure sound great that Matchless is awesome and the Bad Cat is different too.
@@ksharpe10 found it on the website… no clue why the app couldn’t find it… I‘ll try again
Great review Paul. Just wondering if IK missed something though. The unit doesn't have an effects loop and it's got a single mono input. What way would you run this if you have a Stereo pedal setup but still want to use the headphone output to monitor your signal?
Some very good tones there. I'd be a happy man if I could have the 'brownsound' and the tone for Loudness - Shadows Of War
Does the bundle with the software give everything needed to capture amps on hand, or do you need to purchase the Capture Box (or other hardware) separately?
Assuming this is a pedalboard product that you are putting in-between preamp effects (overdrives, etc) and after it (no loop) will be time-based effects, are you then having to use a DI or the like to go straight into the board? The ToneX has IRs and such so it is designed to go straight to the desk, but everything appears to be pedal signal output at the end of the chain. Hope this makes sense.
so, you don't need ir's of speakers, it captures both amp and speaker tone/response? this is perfect for me as the knobs are perfect for my old school head. i don't know if i'd cope with capture process, but i'd be happy with presets or something captured by others. i mainly use a two channel amp and set and forget for gigs. i have just bought a captor x, hoping it will make me happy/inspired.
ToneX Pedal has Speaker Sims all setup and ready to go. They can be completely changed and you can ad IR's if you want. Captor X is a great piece of gear. TIP: if you are going into an interface use XLR-XLR cables only and not TRS or XLR to TRS.
The intonation on your guitars is perfect! What strings are you using! Thanks 😀🤟
Cheers Edgar, I use whatever is about at the time. Ernie Ball, rotosound and Diaddario are all great strings.
@@TheStudioRats Thank you! I usually use D'Addario NYXL and Nickel Bronze on the acoustic! Cheers 😀
399usd? awesome. Happy days!
Ok…. I watched a demo of this thing earlier today and it sounded absolute trash.
I’m now convinced Mr. Drew can plug into a cats ass… kick it, and still make it sound great. Thank you…. For your talent, your wisdom, and your precious time.
Be well.
Cheers Boss. I think people are using the internal sounds as apposed to capturing their own amps.
I wonder if this forces Neural and Kempers hand to offer a plugin version of their hardware. I can also already see a subsequent version of this pedal with multiFX coming.
I think you’re right Boss.
Yeah, personally im not sold on this small limited box although good, i want an all in one with built in effects and more footswitches.
Hi Paul. Nice demo!! Do captures react to volume pot on the guitar? Let’s say if you are using the gainier capture and back off on the guitar volume?
Great Demo and playing as always ... I would buy it ASAP if it had delay or an efx loop! But as is I must stick with my current setup!
agree
Can you disable direct input monitoring when using it as an interface/amp?, Can you also send MIDI commands with the footswitches?... that's what I wanted to do with the HX Stomp when using it with my iPad for extra FX but on HX Stomp you can't disable direct input monitoring... This seems like a perfect add on for someone with an HX stomp that can be used only for FX or the Helix FX
Can you say if the ToneX Pedal makes the profiling of my real amps/rig or do I need to have ToneX Capture Box for this?
Paul, you have some really incredible guitars! The tone from these things are truly amazing! Especially the paisley strat 🤩 however do you still have your old faithful, the gold top DGT?
Cheers Danny, the DGT got sold some one ago.
Can you do a segment, or list in the show notes some details about the guitars you used here? e.g. The P 90s in the fender. The single coil in the bridge position on the green strat?
Is it only mono input? Saw that in the owner’s manual. No TRS? Are stereo wet effects after the amp the only option?
