- Hello Art Friends! I'm Anoosha Syed, a professional children's book illustrator and today we are doing my first sketchbook tour! I am at my parent's house these days and I uncovered all the sketchbooks I carried around while I was in art school years ago, and decided to share one of my favourite books! This sketchbook is the contents of what I did when I was in my last year at Ceruleum in 2014-2015, when I was 21 years old. It's mostly me doing research for my character design/illustration portfolio that I wanted to eventually submit to studios and publishers after I graduated!

It's so fun (and sometimes cringey) to go through college sketchbooks! It always makes me want to keep one again. After becoming a full-time freelancer it just seems like there's never the time or the energy.
I know that feeling!!! I keep telling myself that I’ll draw in my sketchbook but there’s no time and when I get free time I wanna do anything BUT draw!

This was fascinating! I loved seeing all the characters' personalities and expressions, and all the different imaginary scenarios and stories they were in. Definitely made me feel a type of way as you flipped through each page.

Awesome sketchbook! Thanks for sharing. Gives me some inspiration on what to draw in my sketchbook. Would love to know what program you used when you painted some of your sketches digitally. Also how long do these sketches typically take from start to finish?
Thank you! At the time I used Adobe photoshop and I think maybe I spent up to 1 hours on a page? Three for the colouring? These days I am much slower and take my time with my work haha and I now use Procreate :)

I’ve been thinking about studying either illustration or graphic design. I really want to make my own graphic novel and do animation one day but also I don’t know where I’d be able to work since my area isn’t necessarily a good place for art and I’ve heard that graphic design is a good way to learn a little bit of everything but illustration seems to fun. Did you learn about graphic design when studying? Do you know what the differences between the two are?
I actually started off doing a visual communication major (similar to graphic design but more corporate) but after a semester I switched to illustration because that was what my dreams were. Graphic design is a definitely less competitive field and a good thing to study. I didn’t have any graphic design classes in my program but it depends on your school.
The good thing is that there are a lot of resources online where you can learn both illustration and animation. Secondly, if it helps, most freelance illustration work is done virtually so where you live doesn’t really matter. I’m based in canada and 90% of the work I take on is clients in the US.

loved seeing your sketchbook from school. really random and I'm so old now and doubt I'll venture to get a BA in illustration.. but did you have to know french to keep up at Ceruleum?
I actually did! I had a basic knowledge of french from highschool, but when I enrolled in Ceruleum I did have to take french tutoring on the side because the whole curriculum is taught in french.

Are 15:00 what col erase pencil or markers did you use for this i love the look and color. Though everything is goregous.
It’s the orange col erase and a 4B pencil I think? Hope that helps! :)
@@AnooshaSyed yes thank you. I haven't used Col erase before., But i have seen it in some videos. I didn't know they had a orange. :O the more time passes the more I feel like i need to get on the col erase train. Lol.

How ppl can draw 2 same things? I can’t even draw eye similar to other eye :/
I still have issues with getting it right haha but I think it's all about practice, and also getting really familiar with your design! Like knowing exactly how tall they are, how far apart their eyes are etc. Doing stuff like height charts and expression pages helps with this stuff!
