Hey everyone! So someone commented on my IG about calling myself a "minority" and describing it as "my whole life" and I just wanted to clarify since it was cut from the video. I lived abroad in Paraguay during my more formative years and was part of a "minority" group of foreigners since there weren't many foreigners in the country. I recognize my word choice could've been better (jet-lagged brain did me dirty) and also that I pretty much have privilege everywhere I go. Still, thanks for interviewing me~ I hope this clarifies so there's no future misunderstanding! 🤍

Kinda feelt sad for you when you said that Koreans acting like they don’t understand you when you speaking their language. Feels a little bit like some bully mentality they got going on over there, but I guess it’s not the majority who act like that. Thank you for sharing 🙏🏼
would love to see a video 'what's living in korea like for SE asian people. Like some real people working there and not just students. Would be really interested to see that
For Southern Asia people it seem they had very hardest experience at korean….im feel sorry for them….they deserve better…this make me change my perspective about Korean people…
she's brazilian as she did say before but now I can relate her brazilian accent because we speak slower and clearly explained in a polite way, it's good
i feel that in this day in age korean people are smart enough to understand that we all are just humans and treating some one better just based on there color of skin is crazy
I wish that was the case, I'm from Germany as an exchange student and have friends who are also exchange students from SEA and the let me tell you, the "privilege" I get as a white person is not the same as my friends.
Thanks to Jerry for having me on, to clarify a lot of what I am saying here is a generalisation and I have no doubt my opinions will change in future. Race is not something in your control so my advice for long-term stay foreigners of non Korean decent is to focus on spending time in the language, communication is your only tool against any discrimination. 90% of the so called 'foreigner problems' are just a language issue. Change yourself before trying to change the world. It can be done. Learn how to exchange ideas, enter the culture and live in KOREA! (using English all day is living in the west). - George
@Learn paint Paint I think you might have missed my point which is okay. If a foreigner goes to live in Korea surely they need to adapt and not expect everyone to speak the international language. Because Korea doesn't have to let foreigners in, we are actually privileged enough to be in 'their' country. So out of respect for the culture and in order to function in your chosen society (for long term stayers) learning the language is required. Transversely, if a Korean citizen does not plan on staying abroad long term or have a career where English is needed, despite the potential benefits, I think its their choice to learn the 'international language'. To conclude, communication solves foreigner issues. Going abroad expecting things to be 'international' is not realistic and is a popular false idea in the west.
@@jojigreensmith i agree with you 100 percent . however, what i meant was about those who stay in a country for short term ,and since korea is trying hard to advertise itself on tourism market , i expect government to allocate more of budget to educate people in this way . because simply if i wanna just see a country for like a week i wouldn't try to learn it's language unless i'm interested or it has a benefit in my life and i would for sure get help from a guide , but even with a guide you may still need to talk to local people and it's rude if they act on a way like you're weird or something because you don't know the language . that's what is called hospitability . also knowing English as the second language is an index of literacy at least in my country
Interested thing about being half white and half Korean, most everyone thought I was 100% Korean and almost no one spoke to me in English;even after I said sorry my Korean is bad, I am American. Can you speak English? (Albeit I said it Korean) However, when my aunt (white) visited me over Lunar new year they would often speak English to her or if she said in English to them they would often just look at me and speak Korea.
It didn't seem that hard lol.. she in the wrong country if she wants people to speak English honestly. But then again she is young so probably just wants to live life and experience without much thinking.
In Korea for 18 years. 90% of the time being white is awesome. My darker skinned foreigner friends have more difficulties. The hardest part is being a magnet for weirdos. We are easy to spot and perceived as safe.....so if a strange person wants to be strange, then we get it.

I don't really care if a black person say white privilege or what not idc lol Because white people in Asia are treated as equal in Asia instead of mistreating them and majority of them is russian.
Asia? From when did only japan china and korea represent asia? Maybe white people are more welcomed in japan and korea or maybe in china. But in the Central asia, white people are not that much foreigners . Or if you dont speak russian, you are not welcomed foreigner regardless of race. When people see the people looking like white, kazakh, kyrgyz and uzbek people think they maybe russian. Do not generalize all the people looking like white are welcomed in every asian country.
@@shark1140 That's understandable. Without delving too deeply into Geography, I was primarily referring to South, South East, and East Asia in particular, rather than Central Asia. I'm sure we can all agree that these three regions make up the vast majority, and they are the most frequently visited by foreigners in the west. I haven't done much research on the mentioned areas, so I'll take your word for it for the time being.
Wow Your channel and videos are amazing! I also have white friends staying in Korea. They mentioned one of the bad things which was that the old generations tend to look or stare at them in the streets when passing by. Don't know the intention but for them, it didn't feel pleasant.
In my opinion some things that people think is racism is not really racism. When I was stationed in Japan I had some instances, but I never viewed it as racism and I still love Japan. If you try to view everything as being racist towards you and get jaded by it, you will miss out on a lot of opportunities. I am playing on visiting South Korea next year because I am interested in seeing Seoul and Jeju Island.
The white girl who fits the beauty standard saying there’s no racism or colorism in Korea is completely out of touch with reality. Just because you don’t experience it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. And of course she immediately adds “I have a lot of black friends”

It is true that many people in South Korea may make assumptions or have biases based on a person's nationality. This is a form of discrimination and is not acceptable. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect and fairness, regardless of their nationality. It is important to note that discrimination and biases can happen in any society and it's crucial to address and combat these attitudes. It's also important to remember that people from any one country can have a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives, and it's unfair to make assumptions or generalizations about any group of people based on their nationality.
Compared to OTHER countries, discrimination in South Korea based on your appearance/race is very minimal. Go to Brazil, Russia, Sweden, India, Australia, US, and Kenya, and then come back here.

(It can be awkward using a translator) Foreigners who think Koreans do whitewashing are rude people who don't even try to understand Korean culture. White skin has traditionally been the standard of beauty in Korea. Because white skin used to mean a position where white skin didn't have to work outside, the preference for white skin hasn't changed much even now, but that doesn't mean white people can be rude and black people are discriminated against. In Korea, it is called Samblack, Samhong, and Sambaek, and the standard of beauty is that hair, eyebrows, eyes are black, lips, cheeks, nails are red, and skin, hands, and teeth are white The Chinese beauty statue right next door is the same In 儒玉 (623), there is '骨肌氷梅' (ice/skin/bead/bone bone), which is 'a metaphorical term for a beautiful person with clear skin, or the fine and cleanness of plum blossoms'. It is used for 'Seolgi (meaning white skin like snow, and the name of the skin of a beautiful woman).' 腰雪膚細세허리:요)피부고가늘는함부눈설는(: Thin waist and white skin like eyes It's called red-colored makeup, which applies percentage to the face and red-colored makeup to the cheeks
Australia like really??? I live here in Australia and I’m half Filipino and also have Indian friends, Greek, Spanish, Italians and of course Australians I’ve know since primary school. I’m now 48 years old and have never experienced racism nor did any of my friends, Australia is a multicultural country and has learned to respect and coexist with other people from different backgrounds, this is also thought in school from a very young age, they even have harmony day at school one’s a year were students must wear orange shirt to celebrate multicultural day, do you even live in Australia?! Because the only thing Australian hate are people who disrespect our culture to fit into their beliefs and ideology. We don’t like it when they come here to Australia for a better life to get away from their country that oppressed them due to their culture and religious beliefs and lack of freedom they didn’t have back in their own country to only try and change our ways of life. An example is trying to stop Christmas celebrations at school because they don’t believe in it, well hello you choose to move and live in a Christian country where majority are Christians and this Australian find it offensive and extremely rude considering that we have allowed them to continue their cultural, traditions and even letting them build a Mosque. All Australian asked it that people should pay the same amount of respect and not push your ideology towards the non believers from a totally different faith and culture background.
Squid game was the first Korean TV show I watched when it was first put on the world stage through Netflix. I've watched alot more korean content since and I've noticed some trends. They're obsessed with 'America' much in the same way (I think) that Indians seem to be obsessed with all things London/UK. Most people seem to already recognise this. For some reason they always use Hawaii is an ideal destination for luxury travel, what gives?
They love Hawaii because it's beautiful and easily accessible. A lot of Koreans don't have many vacation days, so they want to be able to experience a western country not too far from them geographically. The plane ride will be quicker than any mainland western nation.

I think this his happening alot in korea so some of popular celebrity have to speak about it and explain the people that don't do this otherwise people start unfollowing everything 👍
There's a saying in Korea that being white can erase all other flaws. I even had a conversation with a Korean guy who said that if a girl was not his type (overweight for example), he could like her for being blonde and white. I definitely didn't have bad experiences but I had mixed friends that did. Being pale and European is definitely an advantage in Korea. The next best thing is Latin or Arab/Turkish. It's a weird hierarchy
@Jenna L Yep, there are plenty of pale Koreans and skin bleaching is a big thing all around non-western countries, but that doesn't take away from the fact that we (I don't know if you're white) are treated better. Koreans will admit it themselves.
@@RXH88 It was surprising to me too. I do have friends who weren't white/pale who had positive experiences, but there is still a kind of engrained bias
What the fuk are u talking about? majority of koreans are born with white/pale/light skin naturally but plenty of them easily get dark/tanned during summers because of tons of uv here in the summer. Remember the climate in winter of northern regions of south korea is extremely cold and lack of sun, so it's natural that even naturally tanned skinned koreans get lighter skins during winter time and there are lots of pale/white skinned koreans because they are not frequently/consistently exposed to the UV
Can you please make a video asking the Korean youngsters as well as the Korean middle aged people asking them what they think about the Korean beauty standard, and why people are so obsessed with white skin ,makeup, surgeries....Or whether they are discriminating people with other skin colors .... As you know their language , you can ask better
What i wanna say is that Koreans don't care about western peole much. Western people think Caucasians have white skin but Many Koreans think they have red skin. So some Koreans call them 홍인 that means 'red people'. I think skin color isn't too important if it looks healthy but unhealthy skin can be discriminated in Korea. Bright and clean skin seems rich. Because rich people dont work outside. So Koreans want it.
I was quite surprised to find that the White gentleman had a racist experience. Overall, really honest renditions of their opinions based on experiences, thoroughly enjoyed the video.
Well, milions of koreans call caucasians as "yankee" or "giant nose" or "reddish human(홍인)" seceretly and discriminate them. In japan, many nationalists there call caucasians as "white pigs"
I thought the guy commenting on the dating scene in Korea, the difference between dating korean women and European, was interesting, and I would have liked him to develop it a bit more. For me it sounds more like korean women dont like players, but thats my interpretation. And that its more acceptable to play and be a flirt in Europe...
People need to understand/realize that being white can be beneficial to a certain extent or degree (in other cultures). Yes there is often the perception that one may automatically be well off, because of media and what society pushes forth and some individuals still having a very colonized mind-set within the black and brown communities. But in all honesty, if you are over-weight or what not, a Korean’s treatment of one will not be the best since they value people being thin. So if you fall within the category of attractive on a world-wide scale because you are thin (or in shape), your features come together nicely, and etc. Despite your ethnic and racial background you will still be acknowledged and told you are attractive. Trust me (Latina, tan-dark skin chica), with friends in Korea that were black etc. You will have a good time, same applies for traveling in other countries. Looks are looks…
I love your videos! The questions you ask and the experience from your guests you bring on really capture the general picture of racism in Korea. I appreciate the extra focus you put on their personal stories. They provide valuable insight views about their society since my friend from Vietnam went through a similar experience in Korea. Once, her part-time boss told her she should be paid less because she's Southeast Asian and from a poorer country. It's disheartening, and I genuinely hope that no one else has to go through such situations.
Okay so some people might not fight the "Beauty standard" of South Korea, and all I have to say to that is, so what and who cares? As long as people are not making you feel uncomfortable, for who you are, then it's not a topic that needs to be frequently discussed about. Keep your attitude and demeanor in check, and you're going places, no matter what you look like. Focus on your day-to-day interactions, and not what you hear about from the other perspective. Enjoyable watch, once again 👍 Need to know where you got that black leather jacket from 😂

Am so thankful for traveling and having friends from different cultures, because if that wasn't the case. I WOULD THINK KOREA IS S PLACE OF INSANITY. and place stop using the phase Korean people or in Korea. Because I think deep down the majority or not racist ,their just Afraid to go against society's outlook.
White people in general aren’t treated better than dark skin people. In the states, many white people experience racism in many liberal college campuses
What's the point of the question? The interviewees seem they have no clue if they've through those experiences because they're white or just foreigner or exotic-looking person.
Yeah sad reality shows for European girls who have blonde hair and blue eyes , God Zeus had blue eyes ,That’s why Korean people call you as Chosen one or Godess or staying away ....
Not trying to be racist but imagine an Asian looking down on a Spaniard or Italian with tan/brown skin 😂 Though honestly Asians and natives have it the hardest when it comes to racism. I was light skin but my time in Spain and Mexico gave me that tan/light brown that I always wanted from the Spaniard actor Antonio Banderas 🇪🇸

That old man probably kicked you because you kept blocking him and walked slowly. It’s usually the foreigners in Korea bring and use drugs what is this guy talking about.
To clarify, I was standing still at a traffic light. If it was somehow my mistake, do you really think being sworn and spat at is a just response? He explictly said "씨발 양키놈들... 쯧, 더러운 새끼들" Come on man. The man who kicked me and seemed high is what they refer to as 노숙자. Take one trip to 서울역 and you will understand the type of person I am describing. As for drugs, it sounds like you believe that drug use is only exclusive to/ or mainly used by foreigners in Korea. Drugs can be easily purchased on apps like telegram by Koreans and raicism exists in every part of the world. I hope we cleared some misunderstanding here, assuming 'he probablly kicked me becuase it was my fault' is really overlooking the situation. Let's not defend someone who responds with violence to a man 'blocking him' (even though I can assure you me and my 2 other Korean friends were waiting there way before he showed up) just based off the fact he's a Korean, he should not of hit me, yes even Korean people get high too, I'd appreacite it if you would think again about your comment.

It is a pleasure to see this video as a Korean staying abroad. But I'd like to leave some comments on experiences what they've got in Korea for better understanding of ppl who are not native Koreans. First of all, racism that they talked in this video is more like a lookism, as all female interviewees talked in this video, the beauty standard in this country is about how your skin color is light(white) or not. It gets more stronger when it comes to point of veiws toward females, among Korean females they tend to value someone who has lighter skin color and also males do the same. But for males having light skin color doesn't really matter, cuz some of girls prefer brown or dark skins of men becoz they think it looks more masculine. But in general Korean ppl don't associate skin colors with someone's intellectual abilities or personality. If they treat someone poorly with their streotypes on skin color then that is definitaley a racial discrimination. But as far as I experienced, I've never witnesed that sort ot things in Korea. So their beauty standard is not attiributed to admiration toward white ppl or western society. Just Korean esthetic has been obsessed with the color 'white' but not with the western cultures, for example most of Koreans would not understand the point of tanned skins in western society. Because in Korean history only noble privillaged class was free from physical activities and especially for females from noble class going outside from their own house is something going agianst the morals in the society for 300 years, in addition after being independent Korea was World's poorest country ever, so they kept admiring who are free from hard workloads, the upper class, and white skin was a symbol that demonstrates those females are noble. Hence it is more like a view of beauty that we've beared through the history of our country rather than a mean to discriminate foriegners. And for the British guy, I would say it was just a random under educated old man who does the shit to a random person, but still can not exclude the case he is actually xenophobic. Hook ups in Hong-Dae or other popular hanging out places in Seoul(Capital city) are pretty common and those youngsters do those things someone looks beautiful or "easy" regardless where the person come from. If you are in those situations you can simply avoid them by saying 'I'm in a relationship' in Korean. For the last comment, dating in Korea as a foreigner might be tough or difficult especially if you are seeking Koreans for your date. Koreans tend to be in a close circle only with the people they've known for a long time and they already have their life-long groups from their high schools or even from elementry school. So it is a common challenge for Koreans to have deep relationships with ppl they met after highschool. I assume you gotta try hard to get to know them and get into their circles, I have an Ukranian freind who got married Korean guy but she was really good at speaking Korean and studied and worked with Koreans for several years. But I'd say it is because Koreans are more used to be in their safe zones but not necessarily they want to exclude foreigners from them. Hope your time in Korea be worth a lot.

that Brazilian girl is very honest. I bet another race from the same country would tell a different story.
- George
english is the international language so what koreans try to do ? change the international language?

But in the Central asia, white people are not that much foreigners . Or if you dont speak russian, you are not welcomed foreigner regardless of race.

In Korea, it is called Samblack, Samhong, and Sambaek, and the standard of beauty is that hair, eyebrows, eyes are black, lips, cheeks, nails are red, and skin, hands, and teeth are white
The Chinese beauty statue right next door is the same
In 儒玉 (623), there is '骨肌氷梅' (ice/skin/bead/bone bone), which is 'a metaphorical term for a beautiful person with clear skin, or the fine and cleanness of plum blossoms'.
It is used for 'Seolgi (meaning white skin like snow, and the name of the skin of a beautiful woman).'

Crazy to hear that
@@RXH88 It was surprising to me too. I do have friends who weren't white/pale who had positive experiences, but there is still a kind of engrained bias
But definitely beautiful white. Not ugly white. Same goes to latin and arab. Beautiful girls get treated nicely everywhere in KR.
There are videos about that.

If you're very pretty like dasha taran and fit the korean beauty standards, then you will get treated better than an attractive white girl with blonde hair and blue eyes.
you can always dye your hair and wear contacts the SKIN is the most important part. which most of north/ west europe already have. white people want to subtly addd the rest of their features to the korean beauty standards, when that is just not true at all. people could want to be pale without wanting coloured hair or eyes .

Traditionally, white skin has been the standard of beauty in Korea.
Because in the past, white skin meant status without having to work outside
Even now, the preference for white skin has not changed much, but that does not mean that white people can be rude and that black people are discriminated against.

No one is being rude to you when you’re literally discriminating against someone for not being white skin! You say is part of your culture but tradition is in the past you’re in 2022 and you’re still talking about white skin that’s colorism and racism at its finest. It’s not about not understanding Korean culture it’s about y’all trying to keep hiding behind the fact that your tradition and culture is adjacent to white supremacy! It’s rude for you to even try to pretend as though Black people don’t face discrimination for being black
*As a Korean, I think it is more comfortable for foreigners to live in Korea than in other countries~*

Really? I have heard that a lot of women who got sexually harassed.
@@TrinhNguyen-sh4fj Not really but who from veitnam Thailand etc south country woman got harassed....It is true. So don't marry with korean old guy
Compared to OTHER countries, discrimination in South Korea based on your appearance/race is very minimal. Go to Brazil, Russia, Sweden, India, Australia, US, and Kenya, and then come back here.
Why do people that already discriminate in korea, go to other country just for being discriminate, and then go back to korea?
Korea is worse than all the countries with the exception of India. What are you talking about? Lol
Brasileiro é foda. Vou te contar.
Isso é uma lamentação? Sou a menina do vídeo.
