Otherwise, it is very hard to use their abilities to develop a unique career. They would only be able to do covers and that keeps you at Weddings and those type of events. Most companies don't charge when they didn't debut.If they so, that's a easy lawsuit. And no companies ask trainees to pay before debut are scam. Bigger companies( stock listed) can't fool the revenue so please anyone who are interested in Kpop industry, aim for those companies. They have to use the "standard contract"(which was approved by fair trade commission) and most of them don't charge for the training even after debut( and some help trainees to get a job or send them to other big companies for the debut . Big companies pay for your house, transportation fees, and some allowance) Never go to the company where charge you the training fee before you debut. , that;s an obvious scam

Yeah. I have been living and working here for almost 2 years andi havw to say i agree with her on something. I'm a teacher but it was suggeated to me to lighten my skin and lose weight... i think that is it really just that korean is really influenced by European standards of beauty. The white skin and things of that nature. In may cases "beauty" and public image is everything.
I am the opposite, I was always feel insecure about my weight, cuz am considered fat in China. After studying in US for three years, I learned to love myself, accept who I am. That’s why I really appreciate the US culture.

And I saw in several interviews " really thin" girls in Korea think that they are fat or the People call them fat so they go through an extreme diet and stuffs, but these girls if they go to some other country they will be considered perfectly shaped. Yeah I have seen her a few days ago. Not out of sympathy, but you will agree that she is more beautiful than most of the other members. Her eyes lips nose and face shape is perfect. I'm also black, so I was shocked at first cause of her toned facial features which is very rare in a black girl.

Even if she did get surgery, she'll still be 'too dark' and get lots of hate 😥 I admire her working towards her dreams but as a black girl myself, I would never want to be an idol in Korea, cause looks is what matters first. You can be the most talented but you'd get hate if you're considered ugly or fat. Look at Jihyo vs Tzuyu from Twice. Jihyo trained for 10 years, best singer in the group, leader, very expressive and energetic on stage....still got a lot of hate for many years. She lost weight but still only in the middle when it comes to popularity. Tzuyu, the visual, got in because of popularity and is overwhelmingly the most popular even though her talent is average and she lacks expression. Plastic surgery and South Korea are fairly synonymous. I have no idea how anyone can think of becoming a mainstream entertainer there, without ever getting surgery.

It's rare seeing an idol who keeps their monolids. They exist, like Dahyun and Yeji, but it's still more common to have that procedure done

@Genevieve, I think there needs to be a consideration of the idea that South Koreans are absorbing the culture of Black Americans for economic growth but do not want to understand us. If a nation does not want to fully understand, then that is fine. Remove all the essence of our culture from your environment and then go from there. South Korea financially import and export with the USA. I don't believe their hand is being forced. Again, money is being made from black people culture. That being said, I don't see a problem in having a conversation about some of the issues we see from their country.
She has a nice voice but it's not as good as most idols. She's really smart and lovely and I bet she'd go a lot further in acting. But you're right, she doesn't just sound pretty singing, she has a lovely talking voice too, very friendly, intelligent and warm.

Some tell me they feel safer and more respected by the general public in Korea than back home in America. Although there are stereotypes of blacks most of the stereotypes are influenced by the western media. While I agree with most of what you guys have said, i feel like something needs to be clear: Korean beauty standards don't favor white skin because of western influence. Chinese, japanese and korean people are naturally fair skinned and the predilection for such skin tone can be traced back from centuries ago.

A South Korean national who is half Korean-half Black - _born and growing up in South Korea, embracing Korean culture, breathing Korean, speaking Korean as first language_ - stuggles a lot to integrate and live a normal life like an ordinary Korean citizen. Imagine the struggle of a full blooded black person from another country who does not speak Korean trying to become an idol in South Korea. It's a brave decision on your part but I hope you were informed and knew what to expect before coming up with that decision.

Danielle Dixon That is only the first, small hurdle. Her pronunciation and voice are things that can be improved with effective training and practice. Her skin color and race however cannot. Unfortunately, those are the two things that would prevent her from being able to succeed in the k-pop industry. There are many foreign idols who do not sing well or are not completely fluent in Korean yet they are still in successful groups. The key is that they are still East/SE Asian and either already fit, or can be easily molded to fit, Korean beauty standards, thus Korean society more or less are willing to accept them.
She inspired me alot, especially that now I'm applying for an online audition by the SM Entertainment. Wish me luck bros. Edit: For those who are wondering if I got into the audtion, sadly I didn't. It's almost impossible to get there because of the massive entries being submitted, many people already know this though. I have such a love hate relationship with Kpop. Of course the music sounds great but with such a vast amount of information at our fingertips, why is ignorance still an excuse for these people to say backhanded “compliments”? Most of their style and sound are inspired by western music, specifically R&B and Rap. Yes the media does portray a certain stereotype of black people, but come on now! Being ignorant shouldn’t be an excuse anymore!

It is not such thing as "backhanded compliments" if you compliment someone, is for that someone to feel good. She was mad that the compliment directed at her implied something about her tribe, the black race, but it sounded more as an overexageration than anything else.

I'd like to think that my Korean pronunciation is much better even though I'm learning autodidactically without living in Korea. But I guess it's a different thing to speak a foreign language than it is to sing in a foreign language. It certainly sounded like she had to focus too much on pronunciation to be able to sing with ease and put enough emotion into her singing.

I'm a teacher but it was suggeated to me to lighten my skin and lose weight... i think that is it really just that korean is really influenced by European standards of beauty. The white skin and things of that nature. In may cases "beauty" and public image is everything.
I am the opposite, I was always feel insecure about my weight, cuz am considered fat in China. After studying in US for three years, I learned to love myself, accept who I am. That’s why I really appreciate the US culture.

Some tell me they feel safer and more respected by the general public in Korea than back home in America. Although there are stereotypes of blacks most of the stereotypes are influenced by the western media. Someone mentioned that since those same racist Koreans don’t even like themselves, how could we expect them to be accepting of others? Danielle Dixon That is only the first, small hurdle. Her pronunciation and voice are things that can be improved with effective training and practice. Her skin color and race however cannot. Unfortunately, those are the two things that would prevent her from being able to succeed in the k-pop industry. There are many foreign idols who do not sing well or are not completely fluent in Korean yet they are still in successful groups. The key is that they are still East/SE Asian and either already fit, or can be easily molded to fit, Korean beauty standards, thus Korean society more or less are willing to accept them.

Of course the music sounds great but with such a vast amount of information at our fingertips, why is ignorance still an excuse for these people to say backhanded “compliments”? I'd like to think that my Korean pronunciation is much better even though I'm learning autodidactically without living in Korea. But I guess it's a different thing to speak a foreign language than it is to sing in a foreign language. It certainly sounded like she had to focus too much on pronunciation to be able to sing with ease and put enough emotion into her singing.

redveluv i don't think you understand my point, she was treated unfairly when she was a trainee and my comment simply recognizing her beauty and her talent, i didn't force her to move back to the states i was referring to her experience when she was a trainee, and in which line did i call her useless? i literally gave a compliment to her, you need to calm down and read something multiple times before accusing someone just because you don't have the same understanding or point of view as them, the world doesn't revolve around you honey.
