  • They train hard every day, hoping to achieve the type of stardom enjoyed by groups like BTS and EXO. But there’s one major obstacle for these up-and-coming K-pop stars: They’re not Korean. Chantel Simpson visited a New York City school where young American hopefuls learn to sing, dance and become the “perfect” K-pop star.

Let's make clear. Asians are NOT same. There are vast cultural and racial differences among Asians. BUT EAST Asians and some Thais have been in Kpop industry for long time now. NON-East Asians will have enormous difficulties entering into Kpop industry for many reasons.

True Asia is really large and ranges from East Asians to middle easterners which is technically west Asia and there are soo many differences among them (I’m Middle Eastern myself and I do get a lot of questions about if I’m half Japanese or Korean by friends and even my half Malaysian friend asked me that question when I first met her, and I of course don’t take it as an insult. And personally I’m not interested in becoming an artist despite these questions I get)

@Peace Dream you are right. But hollywood had the biggest star in 70s who was East Asian. His name is Bruce Lee, who was at his prime the biggest star in hollywood. Those non-korean Kpop stars all fit in korean beauty standard AND look East Asian. Manchu people are in fact almost Korean, they look very similar to Korean.

I know there are a lot of people who want to be an idol but don't just do it because you like Kpop or you want to get close to your oppars or unnies. *Do it because you genuinely have a passion for the Kpop industry.* Do it, if you are willing to work years maybe even decades to achieve your dream and make huge sacrifices.

Everyone wants to be a kpop idol, which is cool n all. I have nothing against it but them korean industry gonna bash u down. You're gonna do the unspeakable things you've never thought these kpop idol HAVE TO DO. There's gonna be rules, high diet, not getting paid most of the time n ect😔Everything might seem glitter n glamor till they drop ur contract.
EDIT: I love the determination that some of you commented but to be really honest, some of it sounds very ignorant and stubborn. I'm not saying you should not proceed your dream of being an kpop idol but all I'm giving is warning signs, hints, and etc. You doing research is not gonna help you feel, see, or go through that process of you becoming an idol. This is not a 9 to 5 job kind of thing. You hear stories from actual idol of their experience of what they went through just to be an idol. You even hear or see that some of these idol are taking their OWN LIVES due to stress, overwhelming, being pressured, and etc for crying out loud. Some of them even moved outta south korea and lives in different states due whatever reason, they had. Plus the most stupidest thing, I've ever heard was that Hyuna and E'Dawn were fired from their management industry due to them falling in love and announcing their relationship publicly. All these flashing cameras and fans is great feeling but behind close door is another different story. Just because they are celebrity, idol, models, and etc... Don't mean IT'S GONNA BE EASY. They may have it all but lord knows they struggle with something that they're not telling anyone about. You wanna kick rocks... be my guest but I won't be surprised that another celebrity, idol or whatever had died due to this and that.

To those wanting to pursue this career, I understand your dreams and ambitions but take a look into the industry before you decide to push for this particular dream. Pursuing a K-pop career has it's perks but they basically only come AFTER fame. Companies are known to be very bias, money suckling, restrictive and even prejudice towards their trainees. There is a reason you haven't seen international k-pop groups or members blow up like BTS, RED VELVET, MAMAMOO or etc. If you're darker, non-korean, a bit bigger, not pretty enough and etc you risk a very high chance of experiencing judgment and bias in this industry. Why do you think the entirety of EXO-M (aside from lay) backed out from the Korean industry? They all filed for human rights violation lawsuits and were very open about the prejudice they faced and bias SM had for the Korean members.
The form of training they go through, we as international fans would call abuse. Many don't stay in the industry for long after experiencing that first hand. If you wan't a music career make one for yourself, you'll make far more money that way (because these companies are known to put trainees in debt and take up to 70% of their earnings.) and won't have to go through this grueling process. The music industry in general is always looking for fresh new ideas and music so you as an aspiring artist can become one wherever you reside.

Because training someone to become kpop idol is not easy or cheap, and the company pays for EVERYTHING for your food, rent, transportation, school, your debut, comebacks,a comeback can cost you around hundreds of thousands of dollars, and a debut can cost up to millions of dollars, and ofcourse they pay the lessons that you get to train, and you have to pay that back to the company after you debut. You pay them back by making album sales and Merch sales, the company will take around 80% of the money you make, they take the money to pay your dept, and this process continues for years until you later on disband, if your lucky and you became famous, you will be able to pay that dept, but if you were unknown as an idol, you have to pay the company after you disband

Some of y’all in the comments need a reality check ... being an idol isn’t easy work, especially if ure a foreigner. The trainee system is extremely difficult and tortuous, if u actually want to be an idol, make sure you’re absolutely serious about this. Remember that the kpop industry is extremely corrupted and is already saturated enough with new groups debuting every week so your success as a kpop idol is based on luck or if u happen to be in a big company. The kpop idol life isn’t as dreamy and nice as you think it is.
Edit: LORD u mfs in the Comments are so fucking deluded to the fact that the kpop industry is a corrupted and toxic space that profits off of manufactured visuals and appearances, as well as the dehumanization of people. My god. To put it blunt, if ure not Asian, and not just that, if ure fucking ugly, don’t try in an industry where you don’t even compare. If ure this passionate about “pErfOrming” and “siNginG” then go make it big in your home country instead of taking away chances from actual talented people. I know damn well you’re not actually wanting to become a singer or a dancer, you want to be a kpop idol solely because you’re under the impression that this industry is all fairy tales and sunshine, get ur head out of the fucking gutter and find a new goal in life instead of wanting to meet ur little oppars and unnirs.
Edit 2: STOP EMBARASSIMG URSELF IN MY REPLIES PLZ 😭😭😭😭 just bc there was a few non Asian idols doesn’t mean u can be one !!! Most of these non Asian idols are literally flops FLOPS😭😭 nobody cares bro go get an education and study or smtn nobody cares
Edit 3: Listen I rlly dc if yall non Asians become idols, I stated an opinion and it’s an opinion, meaning not everyone will agree. If ure non Asian and u want to become an idol, then ok, it’s not up to me, it’s up to the Korean general public😄😄😄😄😄 now stop arguing bc it’s getting old ☺️☺️☺️🖕🖕🖕

Following the formula of Kpop, each country can set up their own artist groups. As time progresses, we might even get a pop olympics.

  • @HolyCreamPuffs

Kpop companies are NOT going to take Non-Asians. If they do take Non-Korean Asians, then they’re going to pick people who can pass as Korean or fit Korean beauty standards. They’re just not going to take Black, White, Hispanic, etc people. They’re not that appealing to Korean audiences meaning the company would be losing money by accepting them. If your not Asian, trying to be a Kpop star is a huge waste of time and money. The woman in the video who is training those Non-Koreans so that they can audition for Kpop companies is scamming those people, she is taking their money knowing that Korean companies won’t accept them.

Also I am not a koreaboo, I am proud of my own race and don't have any plans on changing that.
I’ve been intrigued by the Kpop industry ever since I was 7 and I dream of debuting as an idol... the problem is that I’m Native American and trans. I know I’d face tons of hate for that, but I’d be willing to power through it. I want to use music to speak up about issues I’ve experienced or seen. I want to be able to help people that have gone through similar experiences as me.
I’m almost 13 and , until I turn 15, I will train myself. I will work hard to improve my singing, rapping, and dancing so I can increase my chances. If I don’t make it, at least I tried and I will continue to train myself and push myself to become a singer.
I'm more in it for the company because it offers a lot of benefits that I wouldn't be able to reach with just the help from my family. However I do have a backup plan of starting a group with others that are similar to me, so don't worry if the plan doesn't work out.
Also, I'm not too comfortable with saying my gender identity so I will be performing as my birth sex (female)

    Some things you should know.
If you aren’t Asian or Korean you need to at least look like it.
If you can’t dance, you need to practice.
    If you can’t sing, practice.
If you don’t look cute/handsome/hot/pretty, you most likely won’t get it.
If you don’t have confidence, you have a slim chance, try gaining confidence.
If you don’t speak Korean, learn.
You need to know everything important about being a kpop idol, consequences, diet, life style, schedule.
If you’re only trying to be one for fame and fans, don’t attempt.
You need to be skilled at dancing and singing.
You need to be nice and have a good personality/attitude, if not then you probably won’t get it, you need to be a peoples person.
A lot of you may disagree with some of these but I’ve done my research and it’s all true. I’m not saying you won’t make it and that you won’t become an idol, I’m simply just saying some requirements that I know of, keep in mind it’s extremely hard to become a kpop idol. follow your dreams and stay on top of everything. I see a lot of people commenting on this video saying that they’re gonna be a kpop idol because they believe it and they study hard bla bla. I got so sad when i read them because they believe that just with hard work they can be idols. It doesn’t work like that tho. Because they choose the ones who can make the most money not the ones with most talent. And kpop is basically korean pop it’s a culture. And i don’t think westerns can’t show this culture they don’t fit kpop.
If they have talent why they don’t try something in their country or usa? I know a lot of muslims, black, white, hispanic people on classic pop because it’s worldwide.
And being an idol is really really hard like %1 out of 100.000 can make it. Because they always choose the best ones. Most of our favourite idols took dance and vocal lessons since they were litteral kids. And there are some teen girls learning kpop dance on their own and call themselves good enough to be an idol. Nah honey you’re not.
It’s just wasting your time go study for your lessons and do something good to make your parents feel proud

Do u guys realise that you have to sign a contract ? You’re basically selling your life to the industry for a few years. You HAVE to follow detailed instructions. You guys think you’ll get a kpop company like bighit?? No , even BIGHIT isn’t t best company but it’s the best we’ve been told about . You’ll be lucky to get a company like them . Most companies make their idols starve and make them work to deaths like puppets and some even get beaten to keep going even when they’re body physically can not . when your favs disband i guarantee the majority of you guys won’t want to carry on with being a kpop idol . It’s not just a pretty little dream . This is reality . Please be careful with your choices in life . Look over it again . Korean kpop idols get treated awfully themselves, imagine how a non korean is treated . Not everything is smiles and joy . Think again about this before u make the biggest mistake of your life .

  • @bewiahfbei

Unfortunately the truth is... if you are not Korean or asian then you won’t debut.
All of the super famous Kpop groups (BTS, BLACKPINK, etc) have mostly Korean members. And even if you are not Asian and make it through the auditions, you will have to compete against Asians to get a spot in a group. For non Koreans, it’s already hard; think about the chinese members in EXO who left because of discrimination. Even in the newest kpop groups right now, all their members are Korean / part korean. If it’s hard for other east asians to succeed, it’s basically impossible for non-asians. The korean public already heavily criticises their own people. How many times have you seen idols getting bullied for appearance, darker skin, etc? Companies don’t care about feelings, THEY DON’T CARE ABOUT YOUR DREAMS; thousands of others have the same “dream” as you. If you don’t fit their standard, they will turn you away in the blink of an eye. They only care about who can rake in the most money. Even if you make it in, Debut isn’t guaranteed. There are trainees in the industry who spend years training, Yet they don’t make it. I’m sorry, but this is reality and y’all need to stop sugarcoating the topic.

    • @bewiahfbei
      @bewiahfbei 3 года назад +5

Y’all don’t get it, just because you “look” asian or because it’s your dream doesn’t mean that you’ll make it in. Sorry but y’all need a reality check.

0101 reality check again, it certainly does, unless you are a half korean/asian who have these high korean beauty standards (e.g. like Kai from Txt, he is a great vocalist but oc its because of his k-beauty image which also a big impact in kpop. And korean companies are picky and mostly follows the common standards in the k industries.
And everything doesn’t have to do with talent/skill, just sad fun fact. So being a non asian is absolutely a HUGE disadvantage than asians, its harsh and reality hurts tbh.

I hope you know that being a kpop idol isn't just abt having fun with your group, you have to make a lot of sacrifices, face a lot of hate and toxicity and work like hell. The kpop industry is incredibly toxic and brutal and its going to be very hard. However, if you're truly passionate abt music and being an idol and you understand the sacrifices you have to make, then go for it. But make sure you know what you're getting yourself into because its not all fun and glitter.
