The "random" guitar phrase in Passage to Bangkok is called the "Oriental Riff". It's a sort of western stereotype of Asian music using a pentatonic scale that has been in cartoons/tv shows/movies for the last century (pop music and video games also!). You can also hear it in the songs Kung Fu Fighting and Turning Japanese for example.

Rush's record company had directed the band to write radio friendly songs and they better be good or they were going to get dropped. They responded by recording 2112 - basically a middle finger to the record company and their request. They reasoned that if they were going down, they'd do it being true to themselves so the result was a monumental album that's still appreciated today.

Good job explaining the background to the album nfir92...I was going to add the exact thing on her 1st side reaction but thought I'd check this 2nd side reaction 1st. We were on the same wave length. I'm not so sure Verdy understood the whole point of Side1, but I always love to see her reactions to the music of my time in the 1970s.

Thank you for that tid bit which I did not know. Radio was so limited by regulations. Fanshaw College in London, Ontario, had a radio station back in the 70s. They bent the rules by playing stuff they were not supposed. Then had their license revoked. In retaliation, they played absolutely anything they wanted before they got shut down.

When this came out when I was 12 years old visiting relatives on vacation with my parents . My older cousin said “ you look bored come check this out “
Went to his room covered in rock posters and he put on his brand new 2112 album. . This album opened my mind to what is possible with
Music. Ten years later when I met him again he mostly smiled when I told him all the different bands I listen to . I finally understand his smile .
🤘 The love of music makes the world a better place to live in 🤘

I first heard Rush when I was 16 and able to have my own drivers license...listened to a LOT of Rush (And other bands) on my 25 minute drive back and forth to high school. And they've been my favorite ever since...kept listening to them and got to see them live twice on their Snakes & Arrows tour, once in Calgary and once in Edmonton. Crazy good live...RIP The Professor.

It wasn't until the early 80s that I found out that Hemispheres had been recorded about 30 miles from where I'd been living at the time. It's my favorite Rush album, and I love the thought that for a few weeks, the Rush members and I enjoyed the same weather and scenery along the southern border of Wales and England.

2112 is notable in the Rush catalog for all of the reasons dozens of others will likely point out. For me, it is most notable because the album, especially A Passage to Bangkok, reflects a point where Alex Lifeson and co-producer Terry Brown perfected a sound for Alex and his 355 guitar that became quintessential for material from 2112 to A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures to a slightly lesser extent. The sound is a perfect mix of warm distortion, a bit of delay and subtle chorus. Nothing else in that era had that sound.

    • @m.gideonhoyle409

I can't wait to see you react to their instrumentals, especially La Villa Strangiato and YYZ. As much as you enjoy the instruments playing off one another in rock music, you will love these two songs I think.
What I have always loved about this album is it starts with the overture with its story .. and ends with a song about taking freedom for granted. It's just so nicely book ended.

It's 21-12. It's unbelievable how long it took for Rush to be recognized as one of the greatest bands of all time. What I love about Rush is how you can focus in on one aspect of their music, such as Geddy's singing, and the next time you pull the album out it's new all over again, focusing on Eric this time, and another time on Neil's drums. You never will get tired of this band because you discover more each time you hear them.

  • @ajones957
    @ajones957 2 года назад +16

So nice to listen to this album again. I haven't listened to 2112 in years.
One of the things I think that makes your reactions different is that you are listening and reacting to this content the way it was intended - as a complete work. It takes me back to when I used to go and buy the tapes at the record store, and I couldn't wait to take them home and listen to the entire album.
Suggestion: Since you are taking on these classics, I'd be curious to know what your favorite song is from each album and why. And after your channel has run for a while, you should do a show which revisits which bands and songs you've returned to and incorporated into you playlist. And how has this music introduced you to other bands? The progressive rock family is pretty incestuous. I think you'll discover some other great music along the way.
Anyway - great work. Would love to hear what you have to say about Yes - Close to the Edge.

I was in my early 20s in late 70s early 80s, grew up in a small town and moved to a bigger city for employment. I would drive back home to that small town every weekend. Rush was one of the cassette tapes I would plug in and just kick back and cruise for about 3 hours. We only had 8 track tapes or cassettes back then for car audio. Listening to this video brings back those memories. I'm glad to see people still enjoy classical rock in the 2020s.

Great reaction! This album is pronounced Twenty-One Twelve (2112) like the year 2112. In the song 2112 the last words spoken in VII. THE GRAND FINALE if you count the words in the first verse there are 21 words and in the second verse there are 12 words. Neil Peart, their percussionist, is the lyricist for the band and he's very intelligent and insightful and some songs have Easter Eggs or use metaphors or double entendre. In the song "The Trees" the lyrics are a metaphor about racism and they're still relevant as they were back in the 70's. What I love about the song 2112 is it's a tribute to music itself.
    Thanks for uploading this video!

They released an album every year until 1980. No albums are alike and the musicianship is incredible. After listening to the studio albums through 1979 there are videos of live performances to look at z-then you will appreciate the band So please do this and I will love to see your reactions and reviews

RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR!
With heart felt admiration and sincerity!

I think how they composed the music and then chose the order of the songs is important for how the whole album felt. Like you said about Tears slowing things down and then the last harder song to bring it home. Yes. :) BTW I still love Tears as a song and the bass lines are a big part of it but also all the other harmonies and sounds they put in there.

To watch you experience something that i myself first discovered some 40 plus years ago literaly brings tears to my eyes. You remind me so much of my self when i was your age, hearing rush for the first time like so many other people and thinking, who are these people and is what they are doing really for real?. The range of emotions that all three of them take you on is like you put it, a roller coaster ride!. This music like so many others out there yet to be explored was ment to be enjoyed and passed down thru the generations. Its so refreshing to see you keeping that flame alive and helping to pass that torch on to future generations to come. Please continue to keep discovering all the wonderful gifts out there and sharing your thoughts and opinions! I love what your doing!

I'm a musician so I really appreciate what they're doing there and I know that most people's awareness of Rush starts somewhere around 4 years or maybe 3 years later than this. When they really started to cross over into the mainstream with Tom Sawyer and that kind of thing. And it's all wonderful but I just love this particular moment with rush, they're just show you that they can just rock so damn hard. I mean like really hard but then they can do a complex Melodies and harmonies sound effects you know like Pink Floyd and all that and then the narrative drama is fantastic and then even in the standalone individual songs on side B of the album, which is this part 2 that you did, every one of those songs is just a very fond memory to me a very potent thing that I always identified with in it inform me a lot in my playing later even though I didn't play that exact kind of music. They were so cool man. And for that matter so are you. I can't even figure out how old you are much less what your accent is, I know you said Canada but is that a French accent? It doesn't really seem like it sometimes. But at any rate I am so glad you tackled this. I am so happy about that. It's a nice find on the internet

I'm so happy to see a younger generation discovering RUSH. They are true virtuoso musicians, all 3. If you wouldn't mind a humble suggestion, they have a song called Xanadu. If you could, I would suggest you react first to the studio version then the live version from Exit, Stage Left tour. This song is incredible, I assure you. But seeing them perform it live, just 3 guys and that song's complexity is a masterclass in musicianship. Love what you're doing. Keep up the great work!

RUSH, is in my Top 3 Favorites! You should be very PROUD, of your fellow countrymen, Neil Peart, Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson. This Progressive "Trio" rock band, is a true treasure. Much like "Discovery" in Part 1, you are discovering the music that joins the Creative, together. Welcome to "The Twighlight Zone"! I discovered RUSH much like you, only younger and in my room, it was filled with a strange smoke ("Passage to Bangkok)" very intoxicating. The smiles. The Joy! "Sweet Memories", for sure! As I grew many "Tears" flowed and I learned important "Lessons", you don't get "Something for Nothing". This music came FREE!

Verdy, aside from my own first reaction,........ I think, yours is my favorite. You seem to catch the little things that make it all so big. Mine was in 1983 when I was 16. Had it not been for music, Rush specifically, and Cannabis I may not have made through High School. Lol! I sincerely hope you enjoy your Rush rabbit hole experience. I once heard them described as, “The Canadian Turnip Gods”. Lol!
I don’t completely understand the reference but find it still applicable. Safe Travels.

I very much enjoy your first reaction videos. I was first exposed to Rush back in the mid 70's (don't recall the exact year, though) when I saw them in person in Manchester N.H. and they were a back up group for Blue Oyster Cult. I can say without a doubt, they were far better than BOC. 2112 is one of my favorite albums of all time.
If you like side one of 2112, where they have one theme and break it up into multiple parts with various types of sound, I think you would like the album Close To The Edge by the group Yes. Side one of that album is set up the same way. Close To The Edge is also one of my favorite albums of all time. If you haven't heard it already, please do a first reaction video of that album.

My first Rush concert was in 1976 when they were one of the opening bands for Blue Oyster Cult as well. The other opening band was Starz. I love BOC but for me, Rush blew the show away.

Our band used to play A Passage To Bangkok in late 70's early 80's. My favorite part was always the syncopated rhythm guitar part during the guitar solo. Genius!

The strange aery keyboard in "Tears" is the mellotron, the most futuristic sound that came from the late 60s early 70s. Real violins and cellos recorded on 8 seconds magnetic tapes triggered by your fingers. If you want to hear this instrument in all its glory go check the band King Crimson with any of these 3 songs, In the Court of the Crimson King, Epitaph or Starless. Sadly though you can't react to those masterpieces on RUclips for the copyright owners are crazy protective.

Another notable, classic, divine guitars Artist/Albums from the 70’s: Mike Oldfield’s “Tubular Bells” (1973) and “Ommadawn” (1975). Exquisite, sublime, amazing, incredible! They made history and still today they’re awesome! He composed and played almost all instruments. Genious!
