      I genuinely don't understand the people who don't put them at least in their top 5. Their career spanned 19 albums, several genres, amazing lyrics, spectacular music. They did prog, metal, pop, straightforward rock, alternative. And by all accounts were just generally amazing dudes. Their final album is one of their best. How many bands made up of 60-something dudes can say that?
      I have yet to meet someone who's actually listened to Rush who doesn't absolutely love them.

      @@HollowGolem I've listened to hundreds of hours of Rush mostly because my mate is the type of guy who lives in different Rush t-shirts and hoodies. I rate all three of them among the best for each of their instruments. As a guitarist and a bass player, yeah, Geddy and Alex are up there. Neil is constantly referred to as the best. Some of their songs are genius. 2112 is incredible work and the fantasy story being analogous to the music industry and 2112 itself being a big fuck you to their record label... all awesome.
      Some parts of Rush I really like. Some parts in some of their songs are incredible, be it groove, rocking out, ambient or whatever. But it's usually short lived sections. They live in the world of technical music, their constant time signature changes get in the way of it being enjoyable, Alex's guitar work can feel so out there and unnatural that whilst technically amazing isn't nice to actually listen to, the lyrics and delivery can be so cheesy, even cringy (even if the message and concept is really well delivered).
      Again, I like Rush. But I very rarely listen to them of my own accord. Rush make songs you can really appreciate on your own with good speakers or headphones. But they don't make songs that cause people to dance, headbang, sing or light up any social event.

    • @HollowGolem
      @HollowGolem 2 года назад +2

      @@naycnay it sounds to me like you might enjoy their '80s and '90s material a little more, when they were less focused on technical musicianship and more focused on writing good songs. Have you heard "Territories," "Middletown Dreams," or "The Pass?"

I have always thought that Rush was a band for people who didn't necessarily fit in with the cliques that they grew up with. Rush's music was always very "supportive" to me growing up. If I felt like I was feeling a particular way, for example, feeling isolated or lonely, Rush's music always kept me company. In some cases, such as this song's lyrics, Rush's songs were very empathetic in a way. Such a great band.

      @@joemachine4714 Back when real fans could get good seats for an affordable price. Now it is all about the $$$ and set asides for VIP customers. I remember getting front row loge seats right near the stage for a Rush concert in the mid 1980s. No way a high school kid working a part time minimum wage job could afford those seats today. I think I paid about $40, maybe equivalent of $120 today. I had to scrimp and save, but it was doable and totally worth it! Those same seats today would go for $300-$400 easy.

    The interesting message in this song for me is how, after being drawn to the rebellious excitement of the city, we all end up damaged and yearning for the comfort of the thing we grew up hating: the subdivision. And so the cycle perpetuates itself in our children and their children. Conformity --> rebellion ---> conformity.

    This is a song about growing up in the suburbs in the housing subdivisions. As a kid in high school you dreamed of breaking free from all the conformity. You run to the city to feel alive and go cruising in your car with your friends for the action to escape it. As you grow older you compromise and conform. You lose your race to the rats and get caught in ticking traps. And then you dream of those quite suburb streets that you tried to escape from as a kid. And yes, the misfit high school boy was listening to Rush and this song in the 80's. I lived it. lol.

    Lex, you nailed it! It's about teenage angst, trying to fit in while finding your own path during High School. For many, When this came out, I was in High School, so it had an impactful meaning for many of us (and even today) who grew up in Subdivision housing on the outskirts of metropolitan America. These circumstances likely occur elsewhere, and are part of the human condition. The word "Subdivisions" has multiple meanings and contexts. We're subdivided by ethnicity, gender, skill/education levels, Athleticism, appearance, style of clothing, family wealth, etcetera. On a positive note, Neal Peart, by pointing this out, provides an avenue of escape. From his personal perspective and experience, these factors will have little effect on individual self worth and potential when a person stops worrying over it and pursues their aspirations. Those people that were judgmental and prejudiced while growing up will become long gone and forgotten just a few years later. They never really had an influence on the outcome.

    For the record, the "computer sounding/almost cheesy" sound was at that time cutting-edge innovation. It's of course old now that it's interpreted as "cheesy," but since the late 60's synthesizer technology was evolving rapidly and *very expensive* ...some of the keyboard synths back then, such as one Peter Gabriel used, were $80,000 *back then* ... so bands were *very* eager to try them, and everyone/fans were blown away by the sounds generated. Now, inexpensive software can generate it all and so much more.

    This song and others on the Signals album were about late-adolescent frustration. Neil Peart described it as that feeling you have in your late teens when you're frustrated with where you are and what you're doing, and you have that feeling that anywhere and anything else feels like it would be better than where you are right now. So it's timeless and cross-generational in that way. Everyone who's been through those years knows that feeling.
