How many bands could get a crowd that large to "sing" an instrumental with them while they played? Mind-blowing.

And there are only 3 guys playing.
    RUSH, the world’s smallest orchestra.
After being a fan for 45 years and seeing them live over 70 times…… they still make me feel as good as they did when I first heard them in 1975.

YYZ is the airport code for Toronto. All Rush fans know the story how the rhythm section was created - it is the Morse code played by the tower on approach. They built a song around it, which is supposed to express the joy of coming home after a long trip.
Love that you reviewed it. If you want to check out something that will absolutely blow your mind, check out the live drum performance of Neil Peart - "Live in Frankfurt". This is a man who displays the performance of a musician who has reached the pinnacle of his craft.

Neal Peart (the drummer) was considered the number 1 rock drummer in the world. Instead of sitting on his butt, he hired a famous drum coach and relearned how to play drums (holding the sticks traditionally instead of overhand like he'd been doing). He admired jazz drummers and jazz drummers hold their sticks traditionally. It took him a long time to get back to the level he'd been at before, but he did and he was happy and still considered a living legend. Instead of sitting on his butt, he changed his style again back to overhand, because he'd learned both and wanted to push himself by combining the understanding of traditional and overhand. Neal Peart never let excellence slow him down. He retired from touring after realizing he could no longer perform at 120% on top of his game and still a legend to all living rock and metal drummers. Rest In Peace Mr. Peart.

I still love this song and appreciate it so much even all these years later. What I did not know back then or recognize was the Middle Eastern sound that the Alex solo had in it but now I sure do hear the influence. Later on Snakes and Arrows also had a lot more different feeling in some of the music as it was influenced by eastern music.
I really miss your reactions to Rush albums, from their earliest to middle years especially. Caress of Steel and Hemispheres are both way up on my list of favorites from them, but the others are good too as they can be so different. As you've done one (2112) now you only have 18 more to pick from. :)

    Best Live Performance
    RUSH - Xanadu - Live In Montreal 1981 (2021 HD Remaster 60fps)
Alex Lifeson - 6 string guitar, 12 string guitar, pedal synthesizer, volume pedal; Geddy Lee - Vocals, bass guitar, 6 string guitar, foot pedal synthesizer, electric piano/synthesizer; Neil Peart - Lyrics, Drums, orchestra bells, tubular bells, wind chimes, crotales, timbales, timpani, gong, temple blocks, bell tree, triangle, and melodic cowbells.
Based on Kubla Khan (Xanadu) by Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Coleridge composed his poem, ‘Kubla Khan’, in a state of semi-conscious trance either in the autumn of 1797 or the spring of 1798 and published in 1816. The whole poem is pervaded by an atmosphere of dream and remains in the form of a vision. The vision embodied in Kubla Khan was inspired by the perusal of the travel book, Purchas His Pilgrimage. Coleridge had taken a dose of opium as an anodyne, and his eyes closed upon the line in the book, “At Zanadu Kubla Khan built a pleasure palace.” But this opened his creative vision, and the poem of about 200 lines was composed in this state of waking dream. On being fully awake, he wrote the poem down. The theme of the poem is unimportant. It describes the palace built by Kubla Khan, the grandson of Chengis Khan, the great rule of central Asia.

YYZ is emblematic of many Rush songs, a short repeating pattern that threatens to be overplayed, but then switched to a different pattern, each one a nice counterpart, similar enough to complement, different enough to progress forward. Jacob's Ladder has a similar structure.

People flocked to see them. I think their followers knew that they earned their way to the top. No help by record companies or radio stations. Any more than 2:30 minutes seldom got played on a.m. radio so they took to the road and played almost non stop. Slowly but surely his audience grew and eventually they could not be ignored by the main stream. One of the best selling album sellers. That’s impressive since singles are easier to sell. Listen to most bands and you will see one hit on an album. This is good stuff.

Well done Miss Verdy! 3 of the most accomplished Canadian musicians (I'm so proud!) that have no trouble executing complex music live without a hitch, only 3 guys, think about it... Lifeson plays bass pedals and Lee keyboards and vocals in addition to their base instrument, no wonder they've had success since their debut in 1975 until their retirement, one of the greatest Progressive Rock bands that ever was, thank you for the great reaction, by the way, considering the complexity of their music, pretty much all their live performances are stellar and well worth a look!
