Being a teenager in the 80's was the biggest blessing !
Amen to that!!!!
Of course it was 😂
Absolutely☺️❤️💎
was in my 20s, lived life to the fullest, still do, legacy of the 80s!
I was the same age as the kids in Stranger Things in the 80s so I'm quite into the series now. Takes me back. All the music too! Simple Minds were one of my favourite bands. Love this song, it's timeless and still slaps in 2024.
I heard this song back in the 80s and liked it. But now at 57 and hearing this song again, I love it more than ever. I'm now obsessed with this song, anyone else feels the same?
Ditto
Yep 👍
I discover this sound grace of a Friend
I feel exactly the same! Really liked this back in the day, but now, at 54, I'm obsessed with simple minds!
I’m going through an 80s reboot
Jim kerr stuck to his words promising a miracle. This song is a miracle. Great track and band.
One Of The Greatest New Wave Songs From The 1980s. 🙌
Agreed
The bass line makes this song swing, as the guitar splashes along, with that steady beat and vocals charging the whole thing.
Derek Forbes was critical to their songs - until he was fired. They never sounded the same after he left.
Simple minds are right up there with the ultimate bands of the 80's.
No doubt it
They’re great.
I would say they are at the top
This song is evident of that imo
One of the best bass guitar tones ever recorded.
Sounds better then three quarters of the music today.
No Spike inglish português Brasil
3/4 !! 99% man !
@@nopants4259 thoroughly agree
I’m 23 and my music is from the 1900s and gonna stay with me until end of time. The 2000s doesn’t really exist in my life (;
Modern day music is complete rubbish. The cut off was late 80’s.
I would give anything to go back to 1982 and tell my 14 yr. old self to enjoy these songs, never sell the albums, take advantage of the chance to see them perform...and record the damn videos on your VHS. Music changed the day I saw this video and heard this song...my whole musical appetite developed and I spent many hours watching video after video, getting introduced to so many groups...you didn't realize how special music was at that time.
You don't realize that it all slips away. Forgive your 14 year old self for assuming it'll last forever. There is no context for assuming otherwise. Being grateful takes practice.
I agree with every word. I was in Southern California at the time growing up on Kroq and not understanding how precious everything was.
@@The_Empire_Chronicles I agree with you....music become kind of culture
Absolutely agree!
Oh I think you are so right on! I was 11 when this still incredibly timeless gem had came out! It had aired on MTV and all through my 80s childhood, this cut and band has never, ever left me. ♥️💎♥️💎
Incredible song by a band with ground breaking sound, top quality. Where are the bands like these today? Nothing left.
The bands could exist today but they don't for the same reason Chinese bands exist but don't write songs about personal freedom. It is the same in the west - bands self censor for fear of 'consequences' (being cancelled, not getting any airplay or a recording contract). If they don't self censor then they just sink into relative obscurity uploading their unheralded efforts on you tube. But for those who dream of old school commercial success the lack of creative freedom required to succeed these days kills the fun, humor, honesty, optimism and just about every other real emotion that songs are capable of conveying (and which were the hallmarks of the free wheeling 80s music scene). Although we didn't realize it while we were living those years it turns out the 80s were a unique moment in time that saw a freakish convergence of social, political and cultural drivers that produced 80s music and those circumstances will never be repeated. It was a high point just like Fin de siècle Paris was a high point for artists. And just as the 1890s Paris art scene withered and eventually died on the fields of France in WW1) the 80s music scene was unsustainable beyond the 80s. But at least we can relive the sights and sounds of that era courtesy of dedicated uploaders to YT.
MTV used a snippet of this video behind one of the animated logo spots. Another one they used a snippet of on a logo is a riff from Small Town Boy
Bronski Beat.
Try “Local Natives” or “LCD Soundsystem”
@@RickDorian Great write up there Rick!, what you said above, resonated with me, (As I have just turned 60) and when I look back I get goose bumps when that flash back of the eighties, appears in my mind. I am off to Leeds next week to see Jim and the band, which is why I was just listening to some Simple Minds, and saw this, (I'm just getting fired up!) best make the most of these bands now, as there wont be much more time left for these concerts now because either them or me wont be around for ever, , all the best!
Absolute killer bassline!
because it's Rick James
Derek Forbes
@@adrianh6182 Which song?
Thomas Lee Miller “black star dancing”, well its actually Fashion by DB, but I’m pretty sure that’s where this tune is derived from. Hence the supermodels in the video - might be wrong?
The bass is fkn based!
Derek Forbes. Derek Forbes was simply one of the best things going for this band. Brilliant musican. Kickass bass player.
totally agree re Derek Forbes, his bass playing so distinctive & shaped the sound & feel of many tracks big time
As was Mick MacNeil!
Absolutely. When they dismissed him, they lost something vital. I suspect he was a necessary counter-balance to The Jim Kerr Show.
Good drummer too
2021 and this song hasn't lost an ounce of its appeal! That bass and those synths! 🔥
so true
Yop!°°♡
Timeless!!!
Yess honey
Right on!!
Such a brilliant track! Still sounds as fresh as it did on the radio decades ago ❤️
i wouldn't say that.
@@bp6329 would, the lady is spot on
Totally agree!
40 years of promises ! Still sounds fresh and relevant
F%%%king brilliant
Please, ladies and gentlemen a standing ovation for Derek Forbes and Charlie Burchill.
The Scots have good music. I respect people with good music.
Anyone here in 2024?
Me ❤
Yes! 😂
Yes. Feeling old as I listen to a song I loved as a 1980s teenager.
@@milesthered I was a 70s chic
Absolutely! April 2024.
Great song. Derek Forbes was the best bass player this band ever had.
Is he no longer a member of the band then ?
Was one of the best bass players of the 80s. A bass icon.
HE drove this band. Phenomenal player and tone.
This song should have been a mega-hit. It's brilliant.
Quite agree. Great MINDS think alike. A cracking song all the same. , we both think.
Hillary would love it

You go girl hilary ps hows monica
This song was and will forever be a mega-hit. ;P
Promised you a miracle
Belief is a beauty thing
Promises, promises
As golden days break wondering
Chance
As love takes a train
Summer breeze and brilliant light
Only love she sees
He controls on love
Love sails to a new life
Promised you a miracle
Belief is a beauty thing
Promises, promises
As golden days break wondering
Only love she sees
He controls on love
Life throws a curve
Everything is possible
With promises
Everything is possible
Oh oh
I promised you a miracle
Belief is a beauty thing
Promises, promises
As golden days break wondering
Chance
Reflects on them a while
Love screams so quietly
Slipping back on golden times
Breathing with sweet memories
I promised you a miracle
Belief is a beauty thing
Promises, promises
As golden days break wondering
Only love she sees
He controls on love
Life throws a curve
Everything is possible
In the game of life
Everything is possible
Chance
Lost pearls of great price
Take care of family
Only aches for love
Love waits for fame
In chance, in chance, they'll see
I promised you a miracle
Belief is a beauty thing
Promises, promises
As golden days break wondering
Only love she sees
He controls on love
Life throws a curve
Everything is possible
In the game of life
A burning dream
You can be Queen
Everything is possible...
Thanks for this.
Great Song! Thanks🎆
Groundbreaking masterpiece from 1982. Refreshingly innovative and original, Simple Minds were ahead of their time.
yea. how the hell does 80s music sound more futuristic than today's ?? :D
somberrose85 Yh too much Ed Sheeran,Justin Bieber, slow stuff like Adele, etc everything all so slow!
Crappy Producers and record industry trends, internet influence and the lack of isolated scenes making stuff up independently.
because they're just sampling what came before. But some stuff still works. Like that Migos 'Stir Fry' song
Muddyrich good song!
I can never get tired of hearing this song!
same!!
Same same
Don't get tired then ;)
I somehow only heard this song less than a week ago and I think I’ve already listened to it like 30 times. It does not leave my head. It’s such a good song
yeah it is
Yes
It is because it was simply a 80s song,so much talent in that decade
Only 30
Got to get back to this point
I love this man's voice too
Strong. Distinctive. Unique.
Great crooner
The man is God. AKA Jim Kerr.
That ''New Gold Dream'' album was some ground breaking achievement.
Bassline is amazing
Derek Forbes was insanely good and then Jim Kerr fired him. They were never the same band after he left.
Simple Minds and The Fixx had the most incredibly produced albums… so perfect… true ear candy… and still providing after 40 years.
Interesting thing about The Fixx is that although they're British almost no-one has heard of them over in the UK. They were popular almost exclusively in the USA and Canada. I discovered Reach The Beach recently and was amazed by good it is, and also that I hadn't heard it before.
@@ajs41 There's a rare British TV appearance of the pre-fame Fixx surfaced on the channel Made in Maidstone. On No.73 would you believe?
This is as 80’s as it gets.
And only 2 years into the decade. Impressive.
I was born in 1971 so would have been about 11 when this came. It was a big hit, so of course I know it, but it was probably a bit mature for my ears. Since then I've had them down as another slightly pompous 80s pop band type thing. I stumbled across them, no reason, was just looking on RUclips at 80s bass lines to play for something to do, and simple minds kept coming up. Now I've rediscovered them with maturer ears and I'm obsessed. Absolutely bloody brilliant songs, even going back to their early stuff very different to this. Super duper talented and ambitious and experimental in a way I never knew. What a gem of a find!
This a was a very cool song when I was 13 and still a great song at 47.

Im 13 rn and listening to this😂
In deed!
This album is wonderful and never got the attention it deserved. Fabulous band.
Brilliant
Brilliant band
It had some attention and became a classic by now I think or?
In 1982 in Rochester, NY I would go to a club named Jim's every Monday night because that was New Wave Night! They played all the cool underground UK stuff, and Promised You a Miracle was played every night for months. Everybody loved it, too! I never heard the song anywhere else, but budding hipster that I was, I rushed out and bought New Gold Dream. I was ASTONISHED. Those beautiful swirling synths just blew me away. I smoked some W and listening to Big Sleep became a mystical experience, like looking into another world. New Gold Dream definitely started their career with me and I bought almost everything after that. Thanks to the band for all this amazing music
Scottish music is exquisite! 🖤
Simple Minds reinvented their sound at least 3 times during the early 80s.
Pre cell phones and computers I miss those days
Brilliant track! Don't listen to those haters, Simple Minds are one of the best things to come out of the 80s. So many excellent tunes from them and this is no exception!
This song gave them their first top 40 hit in April 1982,going on to reach number 13 in May that year.
TheRunningmanz and the smiths
I’ll second that bro
Another Scottish eighties band
Ro Ritz's was the proclaimers 80s ?😂
It's August 16th 2023 and Yes, I am still listening to this song like it just came out yesterday even though it's about 40 years old. It just never gets old. What can I say? I love it.
Me too!
October 2023 here! Loved this song for over 40 years!
We grew up in the best time. Both of my teenage kids think so, and have said so, and love the music.
Too good
A song like this can never be old.
Great song Simple Minds.
Such underrated song by Simple Minds. Just like " Somewhere, Someone in summertime" I feel so lucky to have experienced this great.time growing up
The best! x
That bassline is awesome!! it all is!
They don't make great music like this anymore. The 80's was the best decade for music.
Way ahead of its time. Released March 1982.
Music of today is just noise
@@ryansymons8915 Agreed, in fact I'd prefer listening to noise. I'm talking about what they consider modern pop music btw, there are some decent artists around but I've yet to hear a solid song with some backbone like this, this sounds amazing after all those years.
it`s not that anybody make good music anymore...it`s that nobody plays instruments which requires to play such a great music. You can play a synth with sound of saxophone...of course and it `ll be fine .Whatever ,now buisiness it`s not about music,it`s about instagram and your ass in front of the picture.Hail to SM!
When kerr whispers promises , promises i just close my eyes & go back to the 80s & all the good memories flood back great music then im 54 now & this track still gives me goosebumps ❤
The Promises, Promises whisper reminds me of Naked Eyes song a bit. Great track. Love Simple Minds❤️
New Wave masterpiece
Interesting fact is that the phrase "New Wave" wasn't used in Britain where the band are from. "New Romantic" was used sometimes.
@Andy JS , As early as 1976 'new wave' was used in Melody Maker and probably in the other weekly papers. I have the Jan 1, 1977 issue and new wave is there as a term.
@@ajs41 I remember the phrase New wave was used?
New wave and punk were used interchangeably from around 76 to 78, but then in 79 they somewhat diverged in meaning, with punk evolving into post-punk (pessimism) and new wave (optimism). New romantic was a club and art and fashion movement with regional scenes in England, with ties to both post-punk and new wave.
indeed
I live in The States. I heard this song on Glittering Prize first then, on a cable music channel. If you only hear FM radio here, you'd think Don't You Forget About Me was the only song they ever song. This is one of my favorite's hands down. Even more so than Don't You Forget About Me.
No doubt on why Derek Forbes was chosen as the best bass player of the UK
In addition to the fact that the song is fantastic as soon as I hear it, I like the part where it appears from side to side and then disappears from the screen in the phrases "Promised you a miracle" and "As golden days break wondering" as if it gave that point to understand and no more retiring is a very advanced video clip just starting the 80s
I love the last "I promed you.."-opening of the last chorus! Both in sound and vision!
Underrated track.
Badass base player. They are underrated .
Take me back to 1982 please. I love this song!
good luck surviving without internet...
Your back
@@bluemoondiadochi The internet did exist in 1982, although only a few people had access to it.
@@bluemoondiadochi Back in those days you didn't need it, 'cause real life and friends were enough to survive.
No sorry
Loving the tune from 1982.
Simple Minds one of the best bands ever.
This is what 80s was all about baby.
Great bass! total 80s
The best Bassline ever, Those Synths !

This baseline is just delicious!
bass is sick.
Word!
The New Gold Dream album was one of those albums I immediately new was a special work of art. I was immediately captivated and mesmerized by it.
New Gold Dream is truly a special album.
The base is everything!
This song has one of the most badass bass lines...!!!
such a well written song and a tight recording. a perfect pop number from the early 80s.

My favorite Simple Minds song hands down.

Love Your Teena Marie Profile pic im a fan of hers. Good Taste.
It is a great tune, one of their best no doubt. My personal fave is new gold dream.
mine is waterfront cant get enough of it
Mine is Alive and Kicking
Without question. So unique and quintessential 80s. Sounded brilliant thru my big f**k off speakers I used to have back in the day.
Jim is adorable
In my opinion this is their best song but they have such a great catalog of songs.
Another classic from this group.
Time travelling through music!! Who would have thought back in the day, that we would some day have access to nearly everything we ever liked music and movie wise?? What a beautiful side of technology!! Rock on everyone!!
So glad you too see it like that!
Lonnie Cain That's how I feel as well! I was telling my 13 year old son how hard it was to build up an entire bands back catalogue & get to watch films that weren't released by a large studio in the theater while growing up in a small Texas town in the 80's. My favorite trip was to go to the city (Houston) where I could go to Soundwaves & order imported music - any new wave, really - & go see the midnight showing of Rocky Horror. It certainly is an exciting time to be alive!
Love this takes u back when l had no problems.
Bloody obvious, wasn't it?
Banging tune
Fucking great song. I’m from Newcastle and appreciate a good Scottish band.Up in Glasgow on Saturday to see The Damned at the academy. Look forward to a day on the drink there n will certainly stick this on the jukebox in every pub I visit!
I'm 52years old and I've been a simple minds fan 41 off them 🎸👌
Love the 2 second intro, straight into the subliminal vocals that Jim Kerr executes so well. Amazing
A masterpiece!
Happy Birthday Jim 😎✨

if someone is interested, Derek Forbes released a record based on SM covers, a couple of years ago. It’s entitled “Echoes”. Pretty good!
I love early 80's music videos! This is art! I wish bands today could do more like this. Simple Minds is an incredible band!
asanmartinjr07 I have a plan to follow the sound of this kind of music. One of my favorite bands is simple mind depeche mode duran duran tears for fears when I listen to their songs I am thinking of adapt their sound to my band. By the way I am only 18 years and appreciate 80s new wave music. I find them pleasing to my ears. Music in my generation is not like this. I am from Philippines.
