    On first day:
    1) When nervous armour yourself with information.
    2) Plan & Prepare.
    3) Refresh your understanding of your new role.
    4) Refresh what the company is about.
    5) Practice how you're going to introduce yourself.
    6) Be curious. Eg., Ask why is it done that way.
    7) You're in control of your own personal brand.
    8) Write everything down.
    (Names of people, Questions, ideas, important information, actions etc).
    9) Make a glossary of the terms used in your division of work and use these terms wherever possible. Using them will demonstrate your level of knowledge and connecting with people in a deeper way.

    In the first 10 minutes of meeting your new team, the fear is being judged by them right off the bat. They are looking to see how nervous you are. If you go in with confidence, then you are one step ahead of your team. I had this fear, but my team (direct reports) was small, 8 people. So I thought one ice-breaker was to bring in a dozen donuts. Food always puts people as ease and for that moment, they are not judging you per say, but, seeing a manager who wants to succeed.

    • @risrcareers
      @risrcareers  3 года назад +10

      Thanks Haasan - glad you’re getting value from it. With regards to my notebook, I keep it simple with no particular structure - just one note after the other (making sure I always note the date and who I was talking with etc). The symbols I add are there so I can find the info I’m looking for. The glossary I start from the back page so that all of that info is together. The inside front cover I always put the names of important people so I don’t forget them, and the inside back cover for other important info like my employee ID, etc. That’s just what I do though, and I suggest you eventually find your own way that works well for you.
      Hope that helps!

    New job but also moving to a whole new country for it. My first ever job. Fear of the unknown for sure! A question about taking notes: I imagine it might be strange/possibly rude to make notes in the middle of a conversation? Of course the names of people can be noted down afterwards, but for example during training - would you take notes as someone is talking to you or would you make notes after they're finished?

    • @risrcareers
      @risrcareers  Год назад +2

      Congratulations! In a work situation, it is perfectly normal to take notes in the middle of a conversation. If you’re having a casual chat then it might be a little out of the ordinary if you are furiously taking notes, but in a meeting it’s very normal. If you’re ever in doubt, then just ask (e.g. “I hope you don’t mind if I take some notes while we talk? I just don’t want to miss anything”). I hope that helps, and all the best!

      @risrcareers  Год назад

      Hey congratulations! Did you know that the feeling of nervousness feels very similar to the feeling of excitement? It’s probable that you are feeling a bit nervous and a bit excited but experiencing it all as nervousness. When you start to get those butterflies, tell yourself that you are not nervous but that you are excited, and it’s likely that this may help. And remember that most of the remaking nerves are from fear of the unknown. The reality is that the first few weeks - even months - are very forgiving. You won’t be expected to know everything.
      Enjoy the new challenge - I’m really excited for you!

Interesting fact for you to consider: When we feel excited or nervous, our body and mind react in similar ways, which can make it hard to tell which one we are actually feeling. So some of your nervousness might just be excitement that you’re misinterpreting 😉

      Congratulations on the new role!
      From what you’ve said I assume it’s some sort of service or line role where you will be hands on doing the work?
      There are several ways to improve your memory generally and master recall of specific facts, and many of them take some time to master, which I guess you don’t have. In the meantime, here are 3 ways which might help you:
      1) Does your new company have standard operating procedures that you could review? If not, move onto the other tips (and consider creating some procedures for yourself and others to follow)
      2) When shown new tasks, make sure you are really concentrating on what’s being shown to you. A great way to do this is to ask lots of questions as you go. You’ll remember more.
      3) After someone has shown you something, try to summarise it back to them. They will help you fill in any gaps, but again, you’ll find you also remember a lot more. At the end of the day, try to recall these things again, as well as first thing the following morning, and again the next day. This will embed those learnings into your memory.
      Hope that helps. Also bear in mind - most of us have crappy memories 😀
      Good luck!

    When you are getting promoted, should you also act like this? I am not getting any promotion atm, I am just asking out of curiosity for future me. Thanks.

      Although some of the principles still apply, it is a little different if you’re getting promoted because you already know the company, the systems and processes, and some of the people. If you watch the First 90 Days video on this channel, you will find that to be more relevant. I am planning a video specifically on getting promoted, so keep an eye out for that one as well.
