The last tips was great! And really encapsulated what I've felt for quiet some time but didn't really understand what's going on. I'm the type of person who sets boundaries early on in a new job, not taking work calls/messages outside of working hours. I thought people at the office might hate me for it, bc they don't really have a work-life balance. But what really happened was that they respected me :O Which was quiet surprising. On the other hand, my manager was always available, was always sweet with everyone. But no one really respected her. So yeah

Thanks very much for saying it’s a game! I use this all the time and used it for my career progression. It not negative but a great way to think of how to think about progressing in your career! It honestly the first time I’ve every heard anyone else reference jobs and careers this way!

Being overly sweet is definitely one of my problems because I feel like I'm being fake. I mean I'm a nice person but I feel like I come off immature sometimes. I just stumbled upon your video and when you said you used to work at a Big 4 I was excited because I'm starting in a mid tier firm in a couple weeks!

I think for tip #6, I would say to always be professional. But unfortunately, most jobs want you to be too sweet due to their customer service reputation. Such as conversing with clients/customers on how their day is or what they did. I had a toxic job where I was scolded because I didn't have full conversations with guests. I had a cashier at Harris Teeter who was overly sweet and rambled about Marvel movies to my husband. Which made the checking out process awkward and uncomfortable.

Thank you for the video, it was very well made.
I will be sure to meet everyone around me - that is very good advice as it can feel awkward if you put it off for too long. I also tend toward the too sweet point and can see how that can degrade on the respect others have for me.

Hi linda, I'm on my second week at my new job. These tips are great and I watched your video this morning. At the end of the day today, my boss talked to me about how I'm not learning fast enough or progressing like he wants me to. He basically wants me to be up to speed as the employee who is leaving soon and who has been here for 3 years. This came as a shock to me because I am doing the absolute best that I can or I feel like because I'm asking a lot of questions. I'm a little bit bummed out and slightly bitter. Can you tell me how to handle criticism as a new employee or how to handle criticism in general at the work place?

The dont be overly sweet tip got me really good.. i would change the framing of that one for: communicate with informations... im not asking you, im telling you because thats what we, as a group, need or as an individual need or maybe thats what the boss needs to know.. im telling you.. im informing you and it will be well perceived as long as you dont make it a personal thing but an organizational thing.. its not about you its about work ethic and following work regulations its about something that we work towards to achieve as an organization...!
