The crimes were misdemeanours. They became felonies because they furthered a 2nd crime, election interference.
A.good lawyer would have him plead guilty to a sample, say 10, misdemeanours a few years ago and end it all.

P.S. the defence could have argued that the jury instructions allow for a misdemeanour verdict but they chose not to so the jury only.had binary options. All or nothing and it was never going to be nothing.
