Yes, it was in German as Blind Guardian is from Germany and that is also the country in which Wacken takes place annually. The choir consists of tens of thousands of people. The band will celebrate its 40th anniversary next year. And both songs, which yoou heard, are from earlier albums. The album - Nightfall in Middle-Earth - was very much focused on Tolkien´s writings. You saw Hansi Kursch, the singer, in Ayreon.
I was there in the crowd, chanting happily along with everyone else.

The entire NIGHTFALL ON MIDDLE EARTH album is a power metal masterpiece. It is a concept album based on The Silmarillion (lord of the rings). CURSE OF FEANOR is my favorite track but there are so many great songs on this one.

Guardian are legends here in germany, formed back in the early 80s. They are in one category with bands like Grave Digger, Helloween, Accept, Scorpions, Warlock & Doro Pesch when it comes to the german metal scene. Bands of that era sang in english because that was the key to be succesful at that time, that changed in the 90s with bands like Rammstein, Die Krupps, Oomph or Megaherz. By the way, have a look at Doro and their former Band Warlock, she is a legend, too, and is often called "Mama Wacken" as a nickname because she is such a strong supporter of this festival. She got strong connections with bands all over the world, for example: she is one of the few people that was personally so close to Lemmy, she got a bullet with his ashes as a present after his death as his personal last wish.

Thanks for posting my request. I'm a bit late to it and I see others already posted the most important things. Let me just add one thing: legend says that if you walk the fields of Wacken and close your eyes, you can still hear the crowd singing Valhalla!
Not only that, Marcel. The Legend continues saying if you start humming Valhalla at Wacken not only Blind Guardian fans but basically everyone will join knowing the melody...which says a lot I think
I really love the way you two analyze the music on a really passionate level because you recognize the passion between the band‘s music and the fans! So, I’m 17 now and I think I found Blind Guardian randomly like a year back or so and they’re easily my favorite band now, and I just couldn’t help but be proud when I realized they’re German:3 so yeah greetings

In my opinion every Metal fan, should see Blind Guardian, and listen to the bard song, it is a must-see, and you must feel the vibes of the live play and sing along to at least once in their lifetime - I will never forget my time in Gelsenkirchen Germany at the first Rock Hard festival played in the Amphitheater by the rhine - Herne kanal ---- one of the greatest emotional moments--- one of the greatest emotional moments - I had tears in my eyes - and goosebumps all over throughout the song --- never again will I see humans from all walks of life - become a unity --- and stream out so much positive energy ...

I could say the same thing for fear of the dark from iron maiden outside in the summer at a festival but admitedly, I haven't had the chance to see blind guardian in my lifetime in Canada yet so I can't realy compare. Probably missed em :/

As for the spoken parts in between:
First part: I would also like to let you scream longer, unfortunately, we only have a little time left. Of course, we want to spend it with music. I think most of you will know what comes next. It has already been legendary here (in Wacken) one or the other time. I have the feeling that you will "put the crown on" this time. (german phrase for: it will be even better). Let`s sing: the bards song!
Second: You are fucking crazy.... Wacken! I dare not say it: You are even more awesome than usual! We had a great time up here. We always liked to come to Wacken. At some point it's time to move on. The time has come now. See you somewhere!

Blind Guardian are called along with IRON MAIDEN "The Kings of Crowds" Because their fans sing all their songs. I recommend you listen to the live versions of Welcome to Dying, Into the Storm and Mirror, Mirror.

There are some classics like "Mirror Mirror" live for example but you could also continue with their latest music videos! You won't regret!

If you want to hear something really special, you should listen to their song « and then there was silence » their most ambitious song so far. Better do the studio version, the live is really good but you will miss the last amazing part.

As others have mentioned, the album these songs are from is Tolkien inspired; their 2010 album At The Edge Of Time has a couple of songs inspired by Game of Thrones, and a couple by The Wheel of Time.

there is another recording of valhalla where the crowd just would not stop. Everytime the band 'ended' it, the chants picked up again, went on for 9+ minutes, then the vid cut off. Legendsmsays they are still singing 😂
