A short time after they were reunited Franz was invited as a guest of honor to a reunion of Charlie's bomber regiment. At one point Franz mentioned to Charlie that he didn't feel he belonged there (I know if I was in his shoes I'd feel the same way) at which point Charlie gently grabbed Franz's arm and gestured to the decently sized group of people surrounding them and said "Franz do you see all these people here? They are the children and grandchildren of the men whose lives you saved that day".

@@Pyr0m4n1j4canother great part was Brown was asked by a reporter if he had any I'll feelings toward Stigler for possibly shooting down or killing some of Brown's friends. Brown responded (paraphrased from memory), "That was the job. I had just killed some of Franz's friends, one of whom had a wife and child waiting back at his base."
Stories like this show the difference between a warrior and cold killer.

When Stigler saw the damaged B-17, he remembered the words of his former commanding officer, "If I ever see or hear of you shooting at a man in a parachute, I will shoot you myself." To Stigler, ""It was just like they were in a parachute. I saw them and I couldn't shoot them down."

Clonescope, the words of Stigler should explain. He took serously the edict about not killing the unarmed and vulnerable. It was written in the Geneva Convention, to show mercy. One who is no threat deserves to live. All warriors are brothers. It is the political leadership that is too dark natured, all too often. I had a brother veteran in a former Viet Cong officer, here in America. We shared the hell of war. He was a long term soldier.

On that idea that you were talking about how sabatons music isnt just about the music. Sabaton has said before that the point of their music is to tell these heroic, sad, happy, or triumphant war stories and to do exactly what happened in this video, pay tribute and to keep the stories alive. They also said that when stuff like that with stiglers family happens it really makes them feel like their music truly arent just musically great but also emotionally great. Also id recommend hearts of iron, the final solution if you want tears, and winged hussars.

Some interesting context, not only did Stigler choose not to shoot down Ye old pub and thus not earning the knights iron cross hence the line "Said goodbye to the cross he deserved" but risked his own life escorting the pub to the channel which at the time was still defended by the Atlantic Wall, had he not done that the pub would have no chance at making the run across the channel at that low of an altitude, it would've been ripped apart by AA fire

    • @flaccidweentheii6684

iirc, Ya boi Franz wanted Charlie to head north through to Sweden because of said Atlantik wall AA fire and shorter distance. But alas, kinda had to say that to another pilot with just wing waggles and hand gestures whilst your conversation partner is a bomber that's got like 3 giant holes in it. So the madlad that Charlie was crossed the channel and managed to perform a ditch landing at the first airfield they came across.

Maybe it's a bit selfish from me, given my nationality, but it's always heartwarming to see songs like this that show the humanity on both sides. People these days are so prone to forget that the soldiers on the German side of the two world wars were people, too, with their own fears and loves and mercy, and not just faceless evil minions. Sabaton songs like No Bullets Fly, Christmas Truce or Hearts of Iron do an admirable job to showcase that.

Not sure if someone else in the comments mentioned this. Stigler's CO made the comment to the pilots not to shoot parachuted men who ejected from their planes. If the CO heard any account of such, that pilot would be executed. That stuck with Stigler when he saw Ye Olde Pub, as he didn't see it as an enemy bomber in his territory, it was a parachute with numerous men who can't defend themselves due to the damage of the plane. That was one of the main reasons Stigler escorted the plane and keep German AA from ripping it apart the rest of the way.

i keep saying this. sure, sabaton's songs are about war and about the people in that war, but they're not glorifying it. they're shedding light to the human experience and reverance of the good that can shine through the mud of war, and also the perseverance through the human condition to survive through what is arguably the second worst type of event to happen on earth history, that being war.

Franz later said for him, those people in the pub were hanging on their Parachutes.
there is a great book about the incident, A Higher call.
