After such a scene, the books would even say something about "knowledge" itself, when Hermione inevitably gains back her former skill in fraction of the time she needed before. Knowledge is not about memorizing stuff. It's about building up your brain. You may forget a whole field, but you'll need just a few weeks to get back to "remember" everything. Because it's not remembering, the logical connections are there already, you're relearning the knowledge between them.

Eventually he has her in so much pain that she can't get up even after he stops the curse. Then as she lies there he steps on her face and rubs his foot into it like u would to squash a bug. When hairy protests he looks at him and leans down close to hermione and says in a soft voice, "I'm just putting her right where she belongs" and then he stands up straight and points his wand at her head "and now i am going to take back what's ours" and does the obliviate spell, leaving this night but taking the past 5 years from her.

@@peachibread1983 it has been a couple of years since i last read/saw Harry Potter, but if i remember correctly that would be really out of character for Voldemort. He isn't the sadistic type, that would be more of a Bellatrix thing. Voldemort seems more like the type to get straight to the point, maybe taunt a little, enjoy his superiority, but as i remember (again, few years since i last read anything) he isn't outright sadistic. To me it seems more like the core of his personality is "I am superior" and not "x person is inferior." And while that seems like the same thing i don't think it is. If he ever uses crucio, it isn't to make the person squirm and writhe in front of him, it's to show that he can do it. If he ever does it, it wouldn't be because he enjoys your pain or because he likes using the curse. He is a narcissist that doesn't care about other people, be it their pleasure or pain. And most of all i think that Voldemort's line of thinking is somewhere along the lines of "I don't need pain to make you afraid. I alone should be enough to make you shake with terror"
But seems like a great idea if someone wanted to add more Bellatrix hate.

Great video. To sum it up, it's not enough to make a villain generally "ableist" "sexist" or "racist", but that the villain needs to be something the protagonist (and thus the audience) personally cares about. A racist is evil, but being racist to Hermione is rage inducing.

    • @CorwinTheOneAndOnly

Like, the issue is JK didnt even bother making voldy a racist guy when he was on screen (or in scene for books). Like, every exposition about voldy ever is all about how he hated them muggle bois, but his entire on screen (in scene) presence is "how can I beat the harry boi". His damn henchmen, who joined him for various other reasons that arent wizardmasterrace based, say worse things about muggles/mudbloods than he does.

Voldemort is another one of those villains that serve as what is honestly a "Mcguffin" . The hero must defeat them because they are evil, or to save the world, etc. And although the stakes get higher and higher as the plot continues, the villain is never developed to truly justify much of the hero's personal drive.

First off, I just want to say that fanfic scene with Hermoine was amazing and made me hate him much more even though I only really have passing knowledge of the series (stopped after Goblet of Fire when the books were still new and never really bothered to come back to it). Secondly, never heard of AnimeLab but I'm not too into anime streaming anyway but good to know.
Most importantly, I think the reason why that guy is so bland nowadays is because we of the future view his actions as a slideshow in a classroom and not really something that happened in front of us so it's a lot more impersonal. Like someone mentioned in the comments before me, it's about the person doing something that would be relatable to the viewer. Genocide from the outside is very impersonal but if it was framed in such a way that it focused on the individuals who suffered during it, I think it'd have a lot more of an impact. That and phrases that invoke that guy have become second nature to people nowadays and have essentially lost all meaning when you're calling people on twitter "literally _____ler" or people literal "National Socialist German Worker's Party" card-carrying members. Besides that, there are a TON of really messed up people in history to pull from as well, seems a bit tiresome to base things off the same dude over and over again.
    Also, great video as always.

With all the stories about Harry being the leader of his trio, the one who did this impossible task or that, someone like Voldemort would never pay too much attention to his friends.
It's this hole in voldemorts thinking that keeps him from grasping bonds and changing viewpoints that lead to his defeat. I don't want a dramatic moment between Voldemort and any of Harry's friends because there simply wouldn't be. He'd just "kill the spare".

The Voldemort in this scenario lacks Voldemorts impairments and therefore the story has to be changed ALOT. Ultimately it was team work and Voldemorts inability to read people that ended the war. If you take that away then it becomes what? A boring story about Harry becoming "strong enough" to beat him? @ThatUndedLegacy, alright so dropping the visage of anime, in what way is Britain one of the weakest countries in the world? The possibility of Brexit tearing themselves apart aside, as of now Britain is and has long been in the upper echelon of economic success and military might. In fact according to the Soft Power Index, it is the most influential country in the world (taking hard power into account it lags behind the USA quite a bit, but it's still number 2 ahead of the likes of China and Russia).
And this isn't a comment from some proBritain nutjob, I mean objectively Britain is one of the most powerful countries in the world. I'm Irish, I have every reason to disregard and disempower Britain, but saying thy're one of the weakest countries in the world is just so ridiculously far from the truth of reality, I have to ask what you're basing it on.
And of course I should note again that Brexit is pretty likely going to fuck up Britain's standing on the world scale no matter how it goes as it's been so thoroughly fucked at this point already. But that's neither here nor there in the assertion that Britain became a weak country via decolonization.

Your reading is great, but it fumbles the story further on.
I think that Hermione should rather muster her courage and spout "I will PROVE to you that mudbloods can be wizards" in an attempt to "own" the slur.
To which Voldemort responds: "Prove? PROVE?! A TRUE wizard does not ever need to PROVE their power. A true wizard IS POWER! " And then proceed to torment Hermione by effortlessly countering anything she attempts to do. Perhaps even by taking away her wand as an "adding insult to injury". This utterly destroys Hermione's confidence in herself and her abilities and from that point on her arc becomes regaining that confidence - a very major change in character. War changes people and that taking away of our favorite Hermione - replacing her with someone who is NOT up to the task - that should be what makes Voldemort a good villain.
This also is a great setup to the penultimate confrontation between Harry and Voldemort when he would say to his Deatheaters gathered for - what he think is - a final confrontation between them: "I will now PROVE to you my power by destroying he who once escaped my grasp." To which Harry should respond: "A powerful wizard once told me that a true wizard does not ever need to PROVE their power" which would extremely piss Voldemort off and create the first true dent in his charisma and composure.

Limey Lassen it’s as Unique says, the more personal, the more evil he feels.
Example: Bondrewd from Made in Abyss. His design is borderline inhuman, and immediately starts doing shady shit. As you learn more, you find out he experimented and twisted children, including a two characters you’ve met episodes ago that are really nice.
As a result, in a single episode, it makes all the viewers absolutely furious. He’s not that relatable, but he makes him a personal monster.
And that’s why traitors are some of the worst, they personally hurt the characters you care about and make you feel personally betrayed.

@@WhatIsMyPorpoise I like Bondrewd and Griffith from Beserk as villains. While they did horrible things in order to achieve their goals, you can't deny that they have sympathetic character traits. Bondrewd treats the kids like they are his own children, he encourages them and acts as a kind person. That makes his experiments even more horrific and atrocious: it's a terrifying contrast between a kind father figure and a monster that will sacrifice everyone for their goal.
Same goes for Griffith. He is a total bishonen character who is very charismatic and inspired many people. You couldn't help but like and admire him for being so strong-willed and being able to do what other people considered impossible. That's what made his betrayal so shocking. He throws away the close relationship he had with Guts and mentally crippled the woman who dedicated her life to him by raping her in front of her lover.
I think the best villains are the complex ones... those who aren't purely evil but actually have some kind of character trait that you can identify with. It's easy to create a villain like Umbridge or Jeoffrey that you love to hate. But if you feel sympathy for a villain or can understand why they are doing this, makes them more relatable and interesting. At least for me.

Make the reader slowly piece together that he does this kind of thing from incomplete personal accounts of him and such. Make it so those who survive are forever scarred by his name and that's why people hesitate to say it. Then this scene would be the big reveal of what he does.
On top of that it could be a huge building point for Hermione's character. Where she learns to trust her instincts more rather than rely on her overwhelming amount of knowledge, thus showing why the hat put her into Gryffindor.

IMO, obliviating Hermoine seems like an iffy choice past that scene. Sure, it makes for good intimidation factor, but after the scene? All it does is take her out of the story in a contrived way. I think there are better ways for this AU Voldemort to make Hermione believe she is unworthy of magic than giving her magic amnesia. (Sidenote: how strong would this obliviate be? What would it cover?) Maybe she fails to cast a spell at Voldy, he taunts her and places her under the Imperius curse, and uses the spell she failed to harm Harry in some way? Not only is she now fully aware of how her failures lead her to hurt her friends, but it also gives Voldemort a better and more immediately provable point- he is able to pull off a simple attack spell with someone else’s body bc of “his wizard blood purity”, while she couldnt. It doesnt have that Asshole Energy that taking away part of her character does, but if you want that big POS energy... just have Voldemort kill Sirius. Make Bellatrix torture/imperius Hermione so she still has that villainous impact, and give Voldemort that murdering edge.

    • @keerya4179
      @keerya4179 5 лет назад +40

No, the point of the video is to say that just killing things and people don't make a great villain. Torture, humiliation and taking pleasure/pride in hurting other is what make a villain hateable. Why Bellatrix killing Sirius work is because she don't face him, she killed him from behind and know what she is doing and is happy doing such a thing. Voldemort wouldn't work because he has pride, he like to face his opponent and overpower them.
Making Hermione forget her knowledge is actually the best option as this is her pride. It would be an humiliation and take away what is most precious to her.
You recover from a failure, once you dealt with the guilt and your friends support you, forgive you and help you stand again you're back and stronger because you know how to not make the same mistake.
But recovering from BEING a failure ? Way more hard. It can scar you for life, make you powerless in the most crutial moments as the fear of being a failure again take over. It can make you unable to face the opponent that hurted you because the fact that you are less than him is engraved in the back of you mind. The suffering of losing what defined you. Your biggest strengh reduced to nothing. The struggle to get back what you lost and the fear of losing it again can lead you to catastrophic choices. The obsession that can be born from this loss like it's the only thing that ever mattered and that without it you are nothing, making you forget why you fight.
Your friends now can't help you as the damage is way too personal, isolating oneself because of an inferiority complex. You need to work on yourself and to fight your own demons in order to come back. It can be solved in a variety of way while still leaving open wounds. Much more impacting for the characters. The victim need to be strong and find strengh and driving motivation and the other characters struggle by being unable to visibly help their friend. Now all characters have been impacted by the villain actions.

Honestly more villains in media in general need more humanity and a actually character and by that I mean a friend or two. I mean look at most morally gray stories, while yes their main protagonists are suitably morally gray and you feel very conflicted about their actions but you look at villains and there's no doubt that they're the bad guys, don't you think that's a bit hypocritical? "Aw man look at our heroes, don't you feel so conflicted about their actions, are they right or are they wrong, who knows but one thing I do know is that our bad guys are way outta line, someone needs to stop them." No if your going to make a morally gray story go all the way and I know what your thinking. "Oh but villains nowadays have sad backstories and those inform whatever ideals they have." In which case congrats you've made a plot device. A plot device is defined as "any technique in a narrative used to move the plot forward" and that's basically what villains are and have always have been. I mean I know they seem like characters they walk like characters, they fight like characters, they run like characters but they don't talk like characters, what do I mean? Well let me ask you a question, what makes you like a character at first? Some of you might say the character designs some might say some badass action they did but here's another way to do it which is have them act like a friends towards somebody or friendly in general. Now I'm sure you can name plenty of villains that have that good 1st impression through methods 1 and 2 but how many through the 3rd? Not that many and why is that? I mean why I get it they're bad people but bad people make friends with other bad people all the time I mean Jake Paul has friends for fuck's sake. So it'd be more realistic and more effective. I mean how shocking would it be to see two people chatting like the best of pals and then have them murder a guy in cold blood? Pretty damn effective I'd say. Another thing you can do with these villains is that they can do one of the most evil things of all, exploit the power of friendship. I mean if they understand friendship they of course can use it to get the heroes to get them to do what they want plus if you writing a morally gray story you can have the heroes exploit the power of friendship right back on the villain and your audience will be like "Wait you can't exploit the power of friendship, that's what villains do!" So in conclusion if you write your villains like actually characters and not plot devices they become better characters,I know who would've thunk it?

I agree with you. Some writers that try doing this though, always let the change in character from friendly with others to killing in cold blood happen way too fast. The protagonist on the other hand is the lens that the viewer sees through and has more time put into what their actions do to others and themselves. The main problem, in my opinion, is how to flesh out an antagonist in a fraction of the time that the protagonist gets; it's a very difficult balancing act, and the result can make or break a story. The execution of each side's motivations is what a story is built on, and if either side is lacking, then the story as a whole is lacking.

THIS VERSION IS SO MUCH BETTER. I mean I really makes Voldemort look like he cares a little about his ideology. For example in The Crimes Of Grindelwald you can see him do a speech, talk about what he wants to do and his thought, on the other hand Voldy is just like, there, people kinda know what he wants, but it looks like they're just following him because they have nothing better to do, not because they agree with him, BECAUSE THERES NOTHING TO AGREE WITH

You know what? I half knew this instinctively I think. Looking back at the stories I've written, my best villains are the ones where I don't focus on the "they killed entire cities without a single care," but the ones where I take a single death, if even a death, and make that the impact. One scene that I actually shed a tear after I reread was where I killed off one of my favorite characters. I actually had the villain laugh when he saw how it was affecting the main character, who was understandably distressed. I usually end up being a dick to my characters, thinking about it

That was a damn good scene. Plus, that sort of trauma would fit in perfectly as the payoff to an earlier scene, when they met Lockhart recovering from his own Obliviate spell in the hospital. It'd turn it into really effective foreshadowing if they showed Hermione going through the same struggles as Lockhart.

The argument still wansn't good. It was predicated on the fact that Uniquenameosaurus apparently does not hate that guy. But millions of people today literally hate him and you can bet that even more of people hated him during World War 2 (especially the actual people he was killing in his concentration camps).
