  • Cut with scissors by hand or with a fancy cutter. How you get there is not important. How even they are is not important. Using the cut size that works for you and does the job - that is important.

I'm new to rug hooking and have subscribed to your blog. I also like Deanne Fitzpatrick.
I live in western North Carolina in the smoky mountains.not much happening here in the rug hooking world...
Is it possible to come take a class from you? I'm also a quilter of many years and Have been able to piggyback with some groups that way. It's just me...
I'm ready to learn! I'm intrigued with dying as simply and naturally and close to the basics as possible. I don't want to beat to death this rug thing like I did etc quilting. I allowed too many quilt police to steal my joy and energy and that was a mistake on my part. I figure it is not rocket science- but I do need a good teacher. Thanks

Cindi Gay ; yes it sounds wonderful ! However , it's just me. No friends who hook rugs or want to learn. They want to stick
With quilting. So I'd have to piggyback in with a group if they would allow it. Unless you'd want to let me come and hang out with you and learn....figure out a rate . I'm adventurous and easy going.
      Just email me privately
I'll tune in to your class

With the virus forcing me into lockdown i started watching hooking and thought I would like to try it. But have no idea what to look for or what to ask for. Any advice for a beginner?

Get a hook (this can be a crochet hook with a thick handle - polymer clay, duct tape, et.) some backing and wool strips. Those are available on my website, https:cindigayrughooking.com

Hi is there a rule of thumb for figuring out how much wool needed for a project

Fold your wool into 4 layers. Is that enough to cover what you want to hook? Or use my method: hook each area with a combination of several wools. You always have enough.

    Hi, Cindi,
I have been gifted with a Columbia Rug and Embroidery Frame (Wm. H. Horstmann Company) I have burlap to use for a piece about 18" X 30". It came with a #8 Velva-yarn Automatic hook Rug Needle. Do I cut my wool strips at 8/32" for this tool?

I have never used an automatic needle. I don't like working on the wrong side! You will have to experiment.

Oh! What rug stripper should I buy?

Also known as a cutter in the US, I prefer the Beeline Townsend Cutter or the Ault Cutter. Both have the same design. The Ault cutter is a tiny bit cheaper. They are expensive but worth every penny. Don't waste your money buying a "beginner" cutter because you will still end up buying one of the ones above but you will have spent money on two cutter, one of which you will never use again. Cut by hand until you are ready to buy. I recorded a lesson on cutting by hand in one of my Tuesday morning Live Rug Hooking Lessons. You can scan back through them on my Facebook page at facebook.com/cindigayrughooking

Cindi Gay I'm wanting to buy a cutter - I have no trouble investing in good tools that make a job easier.
( i did upholstery and draperies etc for many years. )
      I'd love for
You to tell me what to order and where ! Lol
I talked to honeydoo ... sounds good- but see everyone using bolivar . Then there's the various sizes etc.
I'm like buying a car blindly here...
      Thanks
