    Colosseum is probably my favorite pokemon game as well, for almost all the same reasons you mentioned.
    I believe that the reason XD doesn't have as good of an atmosphere/vibe is because they tried to make Orre more tame. Even the fact that the character design for the protagonist is now a child, just clashes so much with the idea of running around a gritty pokemon world. It makes Orre seem less dangerous, and like the world of Colosseum/XD is now being forced to match this new character's vibe, instead of what it was originally intended to be.
    Honestly, the atmosphere of XD is kind of like this slightly weird hybrid of "hey, let's be kiddy!" and "hey let's be gritty!" They just couldn't make up their mind...
    Colosseum on the other hand actually committed all the way 100% to the vibe it was going for! Even the kids in that "kids network" of hackers were gritty as heck. lol

      It wouldn't be as marketable for them. Now, if Game Freak had a different company working on a spinoff like this, that'd be great. But they're also aware of how much better other companies would treat the property -- since they don't have any reason to push the JRPG and can make money with the brand, there's hardly any reason to do this. There needs to be a push for that, but until they do, we'll just keep getting what I'd consider trash. Oh well, that's what competition is for I suppose (Persona, Digimon, etc)

    I love Colosseum and XD, as they truly showed more of what Pokemon could be, all the different sides to the world than just the gym challenge. Getting to make use of a limited roster allows you to appreciate certain Pokemon more and makes you think more strategically than just "who's the coolest, highest stat Pokemon?" I just really love these and hope for remasters and continuations one day.

    Really enjoyed this video. Colosseum is my favorite game too for all the same reasons you mentioned. The limited pokemon selection was so much fun as a kid, as I was forced to use pokemon I would've never thought of using like a Yanma or Qwilfish lol. I wish more games would have Mt.Battle-esque places, though I think B2W2's White Forest and Black City will be the closest we get for training. I also wish more games would have Colosseums or Battle Domes. I know the odds of us ever getting a new Orre game are very, very, very slim, but if they found a way to port these to the Switch...oh I'd be so happy.
    One thing I did recently was play Colosseum on Dolphin and edit the pokemon I had (via pkhex) to pokemon that were unobtainable. I finished my last file with Girafarig, Donphan, Poliwrath, Flareon, Tangela, and Swellow. It was so much fun!! It's an entirely new way to play the game.
    Thanks for sharing!

    • @SNKJay

      Ah that sounds cool! I've been doing romhacks and randomizers to make the game more fun, I only heard of pkhex working for the 3DS games and gba titles, didn't realize they added support for Colosseum. I'll have to check it out, sounds fun. Orre was such a fun region, so inventive and interesting, I liked the narrative that pushed the locations and environments. All very unique and grander to me than what I found in most Pokemon games.
      I got all my footage here from playing Dolphin actually, I like how that emulator can keep the longevity of these games intact rather well. Lol, I'm eager to check out pkhex, I bet it probably has support for XD Gale of Darkness as well.
      Anyways, thanks for checking out my video!

      @@gravity1537 Okay now THAT was a tough boss, Slaking and Salamence messed me up. The weird part was that in the Hoenn GBA titles I never thought much about those two pokemon. Drake was easy, just had to use Walrein to decimate all his dragon flying types or dragon ground, and Slaking I was able to take out with Blazekein. But I don't have my usual Pokemon pickings, I guess that made it PRETTY hard haha

    • @gravity1537
      @gravity1537 3 года назад +1

      @@SNKJay I think you're right. The main reason why Salamence is such a big threat is your limited options. It is done for if it so much as touches a snowflake, but the only Ice-types you get are Piloswine, Sneasel, and Delibird. Piloswine was okay, Sneasel couldn't make much use of Ice-type moves due to his terrible special attack stat, and something tells me you didn't enter Realgam Colosseum with a Delibird. As for coverage moves, Suicune gets Aurora Beam, quite a few Pokemon get Blizzard via TM, and of your options, only Octillery gets Ice beam through level up in Gen 3.

    • @Lucifronz
      @Lucifronz 3 года назад

      @@gravity1537 That's one of the reasons I like Pokemon Colosseum so much. The enemy has strategies. And they actually use them.
      I love Hoenn, it was my first Pokemon experience, but I beat Colosseum, then XD, then Ruby and... Colosseum beats the crap out of Ruby. The Elite 4's strategy is to use Full Restores until you quit. Brilliant strategy, yes, but ultimately uninspired.
      But in Colosseum Dakim will use a Protect/Earthquake combo and then later on in the game he'll use Flying Pokemon and Pokemon like Claydol with Levitate so he can keep spamming it. Venus will use Attract and other annoying effects to keep your Pokemon from attacking and, as you mentioned, Evice uses a Slaking and a Slowking to Skill Swap out its effects and make it an incredibly potent attacker.
      I share the creator's love of this game. I used to think Sapphire was my favorite, and I will say it is still Top 3, but... Colosseum's a brilliant freaking game. I love it.
      Plus Blaziken's fighting pose is way better than his bland stance in the 3DS games and for that, I'm extra appreciative.

    I couldn't agree more with the praise you give to these games, Colosseum and XD were absolutely fantastic entries in the enormous catalogue of Pokemon titles. The first true "home" console adventures.
    I remember when it came out here in the UK back in 2004, I waited until December when I got some money for Christmas and was incredibly psyched to finally go and grab a copy, being 12 at the time I really had to be specific with my gaming choices because my family wasn't particularly well off. I sank SO many hours into this, played it the entirety of the Christmas break and adored every minute.
    From the legitimately difficult battles, the anxiety of losing Shadow pokemon before being able to catch them, the design and aesthetics of the Orre region, the hella charming animations of every Pokemon and the MUSIC, my god the soundtrack is one of the best Pokemon OSTs ever conceived.
    The fact that when the Pokemon Presents came out not long ago, celebrating all things Pokemon, from Red&Blue all the way up the present day and Colosseum/XD were nowhere to be seen, was heartbreaking and completely crushed any hope of them maybe porting the titles to Switch one day. Shadow Pokemon in GO seems to be the only point in which TPC acknowledges these games even existed.
    Alongside Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, these are by far without a doubt, my favourite Pokemon games of all time, tied with B2W2 and HGSS from the mainline titles. I will NEVER tire of hearing anyone gush about how great these games were, I would happily fork over full price for a 1:1 port of these games to the Switch but sadly GameFreak put more effort into milking the series with DLC and their mobile games. Unite, GO and Cafe can do one. At least Legends was a legitimately different and fun shake up to the usual tried and true 8 Badges/Champion formula.
    Fantastic video my dude, you've earned an immediate sub 👍

    You inspired me to write my first comment ever in 15 years of being on RUclips lol. Man I really wanted to make a video cause I just replayed colosseum but you said everything I would have said lol. Whenever I heard there was going to be main Pokémon games on the switch all I could think of was this game, but what a surprise I had coming. I'm glad there's at least a few people who appreciate this game as much as I do. Side note does anyone else remember how much memory it took to save this game? I remember beating the game and starting over so many times and half of that was because you could one have colosseum and like one other smaller game. At least on the memory card I had lol. Also I hope this game gets a random boost of popularity one day cause I can see the amount of effort you put into this video. it really deserves more views.

    • @SNKJay
      @SNKJay  2 года назад +1

      Hah, thanks for commenting! Yeah, this game is around 48 blocks if I remember correctly. I had to get an extra memory card for this game, since the one I previously owned got used up. Thankfully we've moved past that, and now you can just save games on a microSD card or an m.2 SSD (for PS5, PC),
      I hope this game gets revived in some capacity, but at the same time, I don't. Not a fan of how Pokemon games are made nowadays, at least, by Game Freak. If this were contracted out to a different company, like Level 5 or Square, I could see them making a cool JRPG that's similar enough to the scope Colosseum had, but with twice or three times the budget. All to make that glorious Pokemon JPRG I've wanted for some time now.
      Thanks for your words tho, really appreciate it haha!

      I've been using Pokemon Go a bit now that it's updated, but mostly just for things like Melmetal in Let's Go and a chance at shinies during events. Otherwise... I hate it. It's a terrible, frustrating game. What kind of game makes you power up your Pokemon by... catching other Pokemon? The only way to get candies for my favorite Eevee is to somehow find more Eevees? That sucks. Makes getting strong enough for those Team Rocket (sorry, "Go" Rocket... lazy fucking name) balloons impossible, so I just don't bother. It's not fun, I'm not enjoying it, I'd rather play a real Pokemon game.

    Recently beat this game. Every battle being a double battle coupled with the limited availability of pokemon made me use pokemon and strategies I never would have before. My team was Espeon, Umbreon, Entei, Quagsire, Mantine, and Flygon. Quagsire was an all star because Water Absorb and Earthquake made it a good pair with Mantine who avoided EQ and could heal Quagsire without items, and being quad weak to electric meant I could switch it to Flygon and still dodge EQ while baiting in electric moves and getting a free switch. I actually held back on EQ for Flygon since it wouldn't pair as well with the team, and I used Sunny Day on Entei since it let me use Solarbeam while also boosting the healing Espeon and Umbreon could get with their healing move. I could go into more detail about the little synergies and nuances this game made me consider with team building, but will spare them for now. The fact it made me think this hard was fantastic and has made the game really stick out to me.

    • @SNKJay
      @SNKJay  2 года назад +1

      Damn, that's a nice team! Normally I wouldn't consider having a Quagsire and Mantine with me, but I can see how you would make it work. Prolly coz the battle arenas aren't as big or expansive as the ones in Colosseum and XD.

    I loved the fact that this game had such a vastly different kind of protagonist than any other Pokémon game to date. Even though most of his backstory is vague and hardly explained, it leads a lot to the imagination and still manages to make him an interesting character. Once a criminal, but at some point decided to become rogue and use the Snag technology for good. This also might be a bit of a stretch, but I always interpreted the Espeon and Umbreon you start with as a way for the developers to convey Wes as someone who cares for his Pokémon. In order to get both of these Pokémon in the main games, you need to have a high friendship with your Eevee, so it shows that despite being a criminal, Wes had a heart.
    It's pretty disappointing that GameFreak has still stuck to the same tried and true formula for their main game protagonists. Young kid that wants to become a champ and or catch em all. Absolutely nothing special about that anymore. Even XD, despite also being a good game, had a significantly less interesting protagonist, and kinda followed the same trope, just with Shadow Pokémon thrown in the mix. I just wish they would stop playing it so safe and dip into older and more complex protagonists. It's boring playing as the same "blank slate" character every single game.

      Whereas, in XD, you're playing as a standard pre-teen with "abnormally great battling skills" with tons of support from:
      - Your family,
      - ONBS,
      - The lab where your family lives,
      - Eagun,
      - The parts shop owner in Gateon Port, and

    You said "aside from Espeopn and Umbreon, these 48 Pokémon are all you get", except for Duking's Plusle, which is pretty much unusable because it needs Minun for its ability, an ability specifically designed for the new Double Battle Mechanic, in a game filled exclusively with double battles. And even with Minun, it's still not good.
    Also, fun fact, it's actually possible to get all 3 Johto starters in the game without using any kind of hack or bug exploitation. All you need to do is catch the Shadow starter, and then lose the fight. It'll start you back at the Pokémon center with all the Cipher Goons still blocking the exits, but the snag still counted and will be in your party. Just face off against one of the other 2 goons, snag their Shadow starter too, and lose again. Will start you back off at Pokémon center, both the starters you snagged in your party. Then just take on the last one, snag the last one and don't lose. There's also a way to get basically infinite balls, but that actually is a bug exploitation. If you throw a ball on your Pokémon's turn and then re-order how the ball you selected is organized in your balls pocket on your 2nd Pokémon's turn, the ball will still be thrown but it won't be depleted from your inventory. And you don't have to go back to the stone tablet 48 separate times, you can purify a full party of 6 in one visit... though you do have to select each one separately and purify them in sequence, and you can't purify them if they're in hyper mode.

    If you're gonna use glitches to cut down on the annoying grind, I'd recommend the Pokeball glitch. Use your first Pokemon's turn to throw a ball, then on your second Pokemon's turn open the item menu and move the ball to a different position, then continue with doing whatever you want with your second Pokemon. For some reason this makes the ball not be consumed, and this works with any kind of ball, even the Master ball.

Should have saved this somewhat justified rant for a seperate video imo, just derailed the topic of this one a bit. Other than that I enjoyed this video a lot my dude, u got a rather soothing voice.

    • @SNKJay
      @SNKJay  2 года назад

      Yeah, I'll admit the SwSh bash was long, I meant it to be more of a critique of where Pokemon is right now (or at the time of this video) and how much they've gone down from where I thought they peaked (for me at least). I think part of the reason my videos tend to be long is because of how off-topic I can get sometimes, so what you're saying is valuable feedback for me, thanks!

      @@SNKJay I actually agreed with most of your points regarding the current state of the franchise, u pretty much summed it up perfectly. Just kinda felt like it deserves its own seperate (and longer, more in-depth) video rather than here😁 Also I don't think long videos are an issue. After the "rant" there were 33 minutes of relevant content that I thoroughly enjoyed. I think going into detail in these types of videos is a lot more suiting than cruising through it in 9 minutes, like some other Colosseum retrospectives I saw pop up when I typed it into the RUclips search bar. 40-minute videos are dope, since they literally cover everything rather than cruising by some relevant aspects, so I really wouldn't be too worried about the length. U kept my attention for 40:33 min easily😅

      Oh no, I agree. The tier list was the smallest graphic I found online that had everyone bunched together. I also made a tiny error in the video, technically there are 50 pokemon at your disposal, but 48 only catchable. Not 50 catchable... well technically I guess, eh? Either way, yeah Quagsire is the best water type for taking on bosses in the game. Best in the sense that it has a great movepool and is a defensive tank against tougher enemies you'll face, so totally worth having over any Johto starter in this game

    The pokemon company had good managers at that time I liked the serious touch that pokemon was receiving at that time in the games Pokemon colosseum and Ruby and sapphire were good serious games and not as colorful as the rest of the pokemon games, but colosseum gave you the full 3d experience of a pokemon adventure game and that was exciting.... I don't think any pokemon game has come out that compares.

    • @SNKJay
      @SNKJay  3 года назад +1

      Yeah, it's a shame. I kinda wish they could release one Pokemon game for kids and one for older audiences, or have a difficulty option (like in Unova, but maybe more streamlined) or just contract Pokemon spinoffs to different smaller and more passionate devs (like how Colosseum and XD came to be). Of course, it seems the main devs aren't as passionate anymore for Pokemon, why else have they been so mellow lately? I really doubt too that the sinnoh remakes or even Arceus Pokemon Legends will be an improvement. I hope, can only do that much :( Romhacks keep Pokemon alive for me

    4:26 you have a point that Nintendo may have the overall say. Just know that Nintendo is mostly directed at a easier time for games for kids and casual markets. And just look at fzero. One of the hardest games, hardest racing game. And there's only one other kart racing game on Nintendo going so strongly still. Bet you can guess. Because that game is super easy and that game is mario kart

    Colosseum and XD were the best games and they are not made by Gamefreak.
    Funny.
    Since Pokemon is on Switch the franchise is dead for me.
    I own a Switch but I would never pay money for Sw/Sh, Gen 4 remakes or legends Arceus. And not for Gen 9.
    I want mega evos back, I want national dex back, I want a HARD MODE, I want a competitive online mode via PSS (player search system from XY and Oras) and I want a better story again like Colosseum, XD or Gen 5.
    But today its only made for 10 years old kids.
    I hate what Pokemon has become.
    I played since Gen 1 casually and Gen 5, 6 and 7 competitive and now its dead.

    It is not the obsession with the Mobile Market, it is the obsession with Easy Money... Mobile is the tool to make that... and bring more idiots/normies/Casuals to their main game...
    You can NOT mix Gamer with Casual Player, that is a toxic combination because Non-Gamers dont know nor care about The Quality of a Product...
    For them, buying a game is like buying a shampoo... you use it, you trash it, you forget about it... this is the type pf customers that Nintendo always wanted/want because it is easier to resell to them the same product every time, and even worse, more broken every time...
    At least the old Pokémon Co. try "pseudo-reboots" that miss on purpose content that fans loved, to they bring back it in future games, and fans believed they were listening...
    But now, every game is getting worse in at least one or two ways...
    😑
    More than being greedy, Nintendo/PokémonCo/GameFreak... the fault belong to Fans, Fanboys, FanSoyBoys, Normies, Influencers, RUclipsrs, Casual Players (because Casual Gamer is a gramatical contradiction😤), and every that bought Pk Sword And Shit... EVEN THOUGH THEY NEW it was trash in many ways...
    They all told Nintendo: "This is ok, I am fine with current situation 🐶🔥🏠"
    By giving them money for a product that should be sue for fake publicity...
    We are in a mediocre world created by leftists who put soy in everyone's food to feminizes the masses and turn them into a bunch of use parasites, cowards, and over sensitive that will cry and try to kill if you dare to say that the thing they adore is imperfect....
    😒
    That is why Pokémon is trash now... because they people, not just they creators...
    If people would boycott Sword and Shit, Violet & Scarlet would have a National Dex, and better graphics...
    At least they seeeems to created good animations (at least for the humans)...
    But "At least" is a mediocre way of thinking that NO ONE should have when you are paying for something...
    They are destroying capitalism from inside...
    Like in ANY other media, group, fandom, industry, etc leftists infiltrated...
    We are doomed to end like Idiocracy... 😓😞

    what do you mean I have to pay half the game price for dlc, instead of paying full price for the same game with the dlc like always? Not to even mention this game adressed to kids actually balances they difficulty around kids. like, the sword and shield fucking sucks but some of your poitns are real miss.

    • @SNKJay
      @SNKJay  2 года назад

      Alright, so what I meant by that is this: Game dev philosophy has changed. They don't make the game anymore, ship it, and then leave it as is. Maybe with a few updates here and there.
      With Game Freak especially, it's starting to turn into: Let's release a game we haven't completed for 60 dollars, and then the DLC can be charged for an addition 30 dollars. Half the game price for DLC. Because, money.
      In the past, older Pokemon games featured more content, and came with the full price of a typical game for that handheld. Like, Platinum, Heartgold Soul Silver, ORAS, Sun and Moon, all of those games felt complete to me, and came for a full price, with no extra 30 dollar DLC.
      I said "pay half the game price for DLC" because that's literally what you'd have to do. From the official website:
      An Expansion Pass is available for $29.99 USD, which includes two new areas to explore - the Isle of Armor and the Crown Tundra.
      To be fair, my points don't speak to kids, since I'm not familiar with that younger demographic. I wouldn't know if they have lower expectations for games, but I definitely understand game companies are less transparent about their greed -- in either case, that was basically my point. Not only was the Sword and Shield DLC 30 dollars, it was 30 dollars for a KEY piece of the game that was missing at launch. This isn't like Smash DLC, where it's ONLY an addition at most, and not needed for the game to feel whole.
      SwSh were so lacking, the DLC was needed imo. Because, the game on its own is certainly not worth 60 dollars, which was 20 dollars more than Sun and Moon, ORAS, XY, games that are VASTLY superior. In my opinion ofc.
      The post game that Game Freak used to implement in all their past games. They purposely decided to market it for money, rather than delay the game and put it in there. Although that could also be a Pokemon Company decision. If that's the case, in all honesty, I dislike both, but the Pokemon Company especially.
