Tests on CRT SS 7900 Rig on both AM & SSB to find out which mics can modulate and punch through the noise levels

I tried a few mics with mine. I didn't tell people what I was using. I switched out and the stock mic got the best comments.

did you change the mic setting from EL to DY or no??

Hi Mike - very good video - I like the audio quality of your voice and the intro and outro music- very pro! It's great that you are championing the CRT SS 7900 as there is very little out there in terms of reviews etc. I am a big CRT fan and would love to add the 7900 to my collection. I would love to hear a test with the mic gain on full on the radio with a very slight echo on the radio - internal adjustment I believe and the standard stock mic and secondly the KPO NM532 set low- ATB Rob
Thanks for the comparison. The stock mic was pants.. The Kpo has more clarity. AM and SSB. However the Cobra had more punch and bass on SSB. Overall the Kpo would be my choice.. Like hens teeth now but back in the day I had a original Astatic tear drop ,that sounded amazing through a President George..73s 153 AT 888
I know this doesn’t apply to your vid but you can get that Cobra mic to really jump out by changing a resistor and removing/jumping another. Try it!!! Loud and clear!!!
I have the 7900 and I use a silver eagle and the standard for mobile. Of the two, the Mike that comes with it is excellent and comes out on ssb is fine. Save your money and use the standard.
3 years later....but I would say when coms are clear, the Cobra mic is easier on the ears, and over all clarity is better due to the deeper tone. If you are talking skip with a lot of back ground noise, then the K-Po's sharper tone will then make that one easier to pick out. Just my opinion

Hi Mike good all round comments here like you I've done the same all round tests not just on the the 7900. Some standard Mike's just don't cut it for me your test was fair and honest my personal opinion just like in my own test the kpo Mike won hands down I have six radios and three of them have the kpo Mike fitted. Anyway it's all good stuff Mike keep it coming are way and thankyou.
I love the loud rock to muted speech transition lets me adjust my volume as I watch lol
Thru experience the CRT range on FM and ssb especially the mic gain in the radio needs lowering to about 12/15 with any power Mike..... Try it the clarity does so much better.... Using both gains high just don't work.... Usually but not always...!! Lowish Mike gain on radio and 25% to 40 % on the Mike is best.. all Mick's are a little different.. the kpo powered and unpowered are quite good if IF your carefull with the radio gain..

I've heard alot of good things about those mics Ian, your going to get me into trouble with the 'One Who Knows Best', I've had to order one now LOL! I pushed the button on the Astatic Road Devil, to match my Thunderpole 'Red Devil', As I'm mobile alot I'm interested to see how the 'noise cancelling' performs
Wouldn't touch the Cobra as it sounds poor. Standard mic sounds better but I'd definitely buy the K-PO mic. Good test, thanks.

power mic always sounds best on Sideband
The two power mics are what they are - power mics. Unfair test as if you had increased the inbuilt mic gain increased then it would have gave more lift to the meter. I recently gone back to oem mics and in all modes my audio seems to be cleaner and yes the mic gain is increased but this is what is done with power mics also.

Hiya some good demonstrations with the mics but I wondered what mic gain settings you have for your test please?
Yes!!! Mic gain makes a huge difference. Even a hot stock mic will sound excellent if mic gain is turned down. But..most guys/gals run mic gain at full tilt.🤦🏻♂️

I think that KPO sounded better because it also had a high pitch. In others, the voice sounded stuffy.

Have you ever considered the amount of channels you could bleed into using a over driven power microphone…my opinion is there is far too many transceivers that cannot reject close channel interference from this type of microphone …one thing worth remembering there are electronic engineers with a greater knowledge than the sum total of all users who design these transceivers for optimum performance …if you are quiet on air simply turn up the the gain in the function settings and save you money for a few beers instead ,after all you are only repeating what the transceiver is capable of doing itself…only saying 🤔73 ps….the CRT ss7900v is probably the best 10/11m tranceiver on the market today with a 5k shift and good 5 level digital noise reduction producing a decent output around 60w
2nd best compared to the McKinley of course 👍.
Hi. KPO seems to be better for DX because with more treble. Cobra is not very good, sound is bad. Test a desktop microphone and adjust moderately the level . I use a kenwood MC80 with an old President Lincoln, modulation is very clear. Astatic microphones have a very treble and metallic modulation, it doesn't match with my voice.

Turn up Mic Gain on Standard Mic to compeat better with the power Mic's, then see what happens?
M-7 mic is not good for Side Banding, I even tried drilling out the hole to 5mm but it didn't make any difference. Admittedly I do have a deep voice.
But what is the swr meter at? I just see one staple but not showing the actual number

Ive got the SS7900N and its a decent rig.
Ive got 2 niggles with mine, and im baffled how to sort it out.
1st, mine has 10 blocks of 40 Chanel's, bands A-J but i have to use the 10k shift to get 27.545 and i think its 27.595. The chanel change button seems to miss them out somehow.
And 2nd, when i tx i can hear my own voice through the radio speaker, sort of like a talkback function even though there isn't one in the menus.
Like i said, great radios for the money, but these 2 issues are bugging me.
Any ideas please?

I thought the radio mic sounded the best
With the cobra power mic it starts already clipping, the KPO is even worse, and the 50Hz humm is annoying.
KPO and cobra on sideband are TERRIBLE, anything else than "pretty good".
I suggest you're having your ears checked.
Why don't you test them on FM ???
AM and even worse SSB has no decent audio anyway.
When using the kpo mic should you switch dynamic or EL ?????

Great video again. I know others rate that K-PO mic and the video did show that it certainly does appear to be a better choice than the standard supplied model.
I have the 7900 being delivered tomorrow (very excited) and will use the original and see how I get on before an upgrade. (Got power supply ordered too lol!!)

Just editing the overview video for this rig, just a quick overview of the settings and controls and proof measurement of harmonic rejection results, which I must say are spot on! This should be up in a few hours. Glad you hit the trigger on the 7900, I'm sure you'll be over the moon with it, I'll have to seek you out on the Triple Five when I get down to the Mendips or high up on the Quantox / Exmoor Hills! @@CharlieTangoCBUK Hello, how do I get the SSB ALC to oscillate on SSB I have when I whistle 40 watts in normal speaking, the device oscillates in SSB but only at 8 to 10 watts.
